I could only imagine what he was thinking when he first met Applebloom. He probably recognized her from pictures Buttercup sent him in the mail, explaining why he didn't charge Applebloom for the jar of pear jam. Of course, AB had to have been only a baby at the time those pictures were taken, but her distinctive features, like her hair and bow, might have been enough for Grand Pear to put two and two together.
I’m pretty sure Applebloom says her name when she first meets him too, that plus her features, specifically her identical colour scheme to her dad, Bright Mac, and it wouldn’t have been hard for GrandPear to put two and two together

Rachel the pony | It's unknown if this kind of thing ever happened. All that we know is that, Pear Butter has been missing for a long time, and it seems that her father had already known this for quite a while when he moved back to Ponyville.
The way he disowned his daughter; he may as well have slapped her across the face, and yet she still loved him.

his comic made me realize how much Grand Pear is like my Grandfather since when my dad was growing up he was hardly ever there for him putting work before family but is now making up for it by being there for me, my siblings and my cousins
Same with my grandfather before he passed away in April, he loved my dad, uncle, and aunts but didn't really express it to them to the point that now my dad doesn't know how to express his love to me and my sister, but he made it up for it by being the best grandfather in the world, RIP grandpa I miss you...
the opposite happened a friend of mine, his grandfather regretted being a bad dad but his dad carried that grudge with him and continued that fight until his grandfather died without ever getting to know about him.
we only found out that he died years after his death and only because his grandma had a fight with his dad about it when she found out she was a grandma, apparently the dad lied to her that he was single and not married with children, it was quite the ruckus since his dad actually beat her down on the garden, called the police, pressed charges and put a restraining order on her ass.
by the way we watched that whole mess unfold while we were playing on the PSX in the early 2000's.
it was a mess but luckily me and his friends were teenagers when it happened so it wasn't as bad, we supported him the best way we could at the time.
then the dad explained to my friend his side of then story after kicking us out of the house and calling our parents about what went down.
and it won't be until after his 19th birthday that he will get to meet his grandmother for the first time and jesus christ was that old hag the definition of a life filled with regret from what he told me.
apparently the parents played favorites with dad's sister being the golden child, you can guess things went wrong when the sister pulled a stunt with dad at school and he beat her up so bad she was on a wheelchair for months, then got on a fight with grandfather afterwards and grandfather was beaten up by dad which caused dad to be disowned on spot and kicked out of the house, at the time grandmother supported her husband decision but they sadly lived up to regret it since the sister didn't regret anything and was a little monster that put them in too much trouble until she went to prison and got herself killed there, it wasn't until a few weeks after the sister passed away that they realized they fucked up but too little too late, when they tried to make amends the dad moved to the other side of the country where he met his wife and married.
I can't blame the dad in his situation and the grandparents reaped what they had sown.
He may have been a Terrible Father, but hopefully he can still become a Decent Grandfather.
skurvay No matter how someone's past was we and that person can learn of what they did. Everyone is different and we might do something speaking out of anger and do something wrong with your loved ones. Its just like the realationship with my dad.(on my comment) No one can take your love for someone that did something wrong. My dad did so many wrong things and my mom dint gave him another chance. But I did in my heart and when I see him again I'm going to say I love you.Everyone can get mad and hate but never take away your live for something or someone. Learn from the past and be amassed with your accomplished.
skurvay | Terrible Father? I beg your pardon. Pear Butter is a wonderful Lady, Wife, and Mother. He must have done something right to raise a female like that. Unlike many fathers, he also stayed away from his son-in-law's affairs. Not many fathers are willing to do that. Instead, they are like, 'oh, but we want to see the grandchildren'.
BriBri Sparkle | The thing he did wrong is… his separation with her was awful. That is it. But he did the right thing by making her choose between Pear and Apple. And he raised her right, she choosed her husband's family.

It must be so painful knowing that you spent your life away from those you truly loved, and know you'll never get that time back. All those years you could have been with your daughter and her family you lost because of stubbornness. Now your daughter is gone and you weren't there by her side. RIP Buttercup and Bright Mac.

it's probably going to be even more sadder because when he learns that his daughter pass away along with bright mac, he'll never get a chance to reconcile with her.
It’s honestly sad that he never visit his daughter for a long time now even if it’s too late for him to become the best father for her but at least he can be the best grandfather for his grandchildren
This reminds me about my realationship with my dad. At the end I started crying like a baby. This is so good that it remind me about my past with my dad.😭

We might still have regret with other's in our past. We can't hold it anymore, fight for who you love even if you can not see or hear them or see them under surveillance. Enjoy the moment before its to late because they might never see you again. For example my dad used to send pictures and cards but not anymore but I treasure those cards with all my love for him. It might be different for your story but its the same to love everything in your past and present.(I did another comment check it out below)

I’m pretty sure he regrets it deep down after shortly abandoning his daughter, but it was behind all that stubbornness and he didn’t want to be part of Pear Butter’s life because it was probably due to shame and fear of facing her again.
I cried enough tears to water the new crops he planted after watching this.

It's funny that the saddest stories are the most emotional. All that time, Pear Blossom cared so much about her father, yet the only reason why she stopped writing letters is because...well, I'd rather not say but I think you all know.
I think the echoing flashback audio really killed it. Made it so much more sad.

Grand Pear's story hurts the most for me. Pride is a killer. Pride is a mask. Pride is a blindfold. It can tear apart families, friends, it can tear apart any relationship if all parties are incapable of fighting its control.
I recall when my grandfather passed, he slowly died in his body like a tomb. He refused all medical help from an age old bias he held. So his body slowly shut down, organ by organ, until he was reduced down to nothing but a functional mind in a non-functional body. This age old bias he held meant he kept falling, but rushed to ER, refusing help, being discharged, falling, being rushed to ER...
He eventually died, but I became so enraged at him for his stubborn behavior that I refused to visit him at all during his final months. My pride blinded me. I even outright refused to attend his funeral service in favor of going to work because of my anger and pride. I never got closure on his death.
Don't let pride by your downfall.

P.s. at this point in time I haven’t made it past season 7 yet, just haven’t had the time, so I have no idea if 8 or 9 have a better episode, and please, no spoilers

GrandPear did love his daughter, he did want her to be happy. But he was just stubborn to let his grudge with Smith go. As much as I would like to fault him and be mad at him for basically disowning his daughter. I just can't, the man was already full of enough regret after hearing his daughter passed away last thing he needs is to be kicked while he's down. Besides, a lot of people including myself can relate with him. We've all lost some one we love one way or another, and like with what the Apples did for him. It's best to offer a shoulder to lean on. Or to put in Applejacks words. "If anythings gonna make it through. It's Apples, and Pears."

I feel like this is what actually happened, like it would be canon, and its why grandpear went back in the first place

He is a wonderful father, for raising Pear Butter to be a Lady who stands by with her husband, even if it meant going against her own family. Not much fathers are willing to lose their daughters like that, instead they became involved in raising their daughters' families, aka mucking their noses where their noses shouldn't have belong. A wonderful father, who paid a heavy price for his non involvement.

Twilight Sparkle's real parents are also in the same condition. But in My Little Pony: Equestria Girls, we find comfort on the fact Twilight and her real mother became friends ala Applejack and Pinkie Pie(aka Pear Butter), eventhought the series hasn't mentioned it yet.
What about Twilight's real dad? Well, see King Sombra? Well, he isn't her dad. But some did mentioned on how Sombra resembled Mephiles the Dark from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) / Sonic '06. And where did Mephiles copied his form from?

Yeah, Twilight Sparkle is the daughter of the pony version of Shadow the Hedgehog. Makes sense, right? I mean, she is basically a mini girl version of Shadow. She is also basically 'the daughter of Iblis'. Sonic '06 edited out a lot of the concepts involving 'Sunset the Hedgehog', known in MLP as Sunset Shimmer.

Bright Macintosh & Pear Butter → Shining Armor & Pinkie Pie. Surely there're hidden memories of Bright Macintosh & Pear Butter inside Shining Armor & Pinkie Pie. The right spell can unlock those memories, enabling Pear Butter or at least memories of Pear Butter to communicate with her father, and also Applejack, who is in best friend status with her mother, without knowing it.
