So you're gonna ticket people for parking in a spot that isn't a red zone but not arrest fools for breaking into my car?
Bingo, unless they change the law, you gotta prove your car was locked.
Arresting criminals cost money, giving out citations make $$$$$$$.🤑
Did you have plastic straws in the car?
The DMV and the SFMTA do not have the authority to arrest people.
@@RaymondHng no but the can quite easily use people who do have said authority to take all your money, vehicles, and freedom if you don't comply, and those same people are the ones who should be arresting the scumbags. Don't be daft.
They will need to mark those areas in red.
I believe in Europe the actual street is stripped with diagonal lines so its like a 10x20 feet area marked off so people know not to park within that space.
it's not an mta rule so it doesn't get painted. it's like how they don't paint for fire hydrants
Another reason to avoid going to San Francisco to eat. Yes, San Francisco is anti car. They are removing parking spaces, car lanes, closing off streets and adding more obstacles in the intersections. Look at all of the congestion now. They are going to kill off small businesses. Once this happens only large corporations like Walmart will be able to come in and establish themselves. This is exactly the opposite of what the people want. Thank you Mayor Greed.
While I support making streets more safe for pedestrians, the state needs to paint the no parking space red. It is also pointless to have laws that are not enforced. Where I live, the intersection of Octavia/Haight, the crosswalk and intersection are constantly blocked by drivers. MTA does nothing about issuing tickets to deter this behavior.
To be fair this is a law in other cities and people seem to somehow do it without red paint. I agree though they should paint it
It's a DMV law like not parking in front of a fire hydrant. It does need to be painted. Though I'm sure some smaller cities will paint the curbs. Though, on the other hand, they would get more illegal parking revenue if they don't paint it
FO DA MONEY
@mrxman581 I think the paint shows exactly what 20 feet is. Without it, there might be more arguments about who was right and wrong.
@@mrxman581 I think even with a fire hydrant, it isn't just not parking in front of it. It is within a certain distance.
They don’t want to paint the curbs so they can sneak up on you and collect your money.
total cash grab....total!
@davidwright873 I agreed , It's all about MONEY, not SAFETY. 😆
Why don’t they ticket the homeless people camping out on the streets? They cause people to walk around them and now present fire dangers as well. The real reason is they can only ticket the working class as they are the only ones who can afford to pay the fines.
This has nothing to do with a cash grab and that was explained.
When someone parks too close to a crosswalk, it makes a blind spot. Which makes it very difficult for cars to see pedestrians attempting to use that crosswalk.
They're not giving tickets for a whole year. They're just issuing warnings.
People will have until 2025 to learn the new state law.
iTS A CASH GRAB!! LISTEN!! when you cross the street, look left, look right, look left again, make sure cars see you and then proceed...w/ caution and put the damn phone down....Why in 2024 is this all of a sudden a huge problem? Answer that? what's changed? INattention to your surroundings. Pedestrian vs car....YOU WILL LOSE everytime! @@rws91942
DMV could text all registered drivers the link to new laws every year by December to educate people ahead of the new year. Why aren't lawmakers think about this?
You must be new to California, here we don't do things the smart way.
not all registered drivers have cell phones ..
@@StephenDavis-vh4oc Texting all registered drivers in California would require opt-in and consent from 27 million licensed drivers.
@@RaymondHng there are multiple ways they can opt-in drivers during yearly renewal or registration like text, email or even mail. DMV definitely can inform them via one of these based on whichever way works for the driver.
@@raghunathkrishnan5124 Still, it's 27 million notification to 27 million licensed drivers.
As a driver, I love this new law. I do a lot of big city driving and parking and have been increasingly stressed by the inability to get a clear view of pedestrian cross walks.
How about for every intersection we built a bridge to let them cross the street safely by going above the vehicles, no need to wait for traffic lights to change. Just walk up the steps and cross the bridge, like what they have for freeway crossings. Have them in every intersection. So drivers now don't have to deal with pedestrians anymore and will save millions of lives.
As a delivery driver, they actually train us to use the truck as an obstacle for safety against oncoming traffic when crossing the street. On my own outside of work, I generally try to make some kind of contact with the driver before I start to cross, i.e. eye contact, waving hands, making sure they are actually slowing down... a little bit on the pedestrian end can go a long way towards overall safety.
You are a trained professional. I am also commercial driver. The expectations of us on the road are going to be higher.
That does not apply to pedestrians.
I am not implying that pedestrian should not pay attention. But they are not the ones operating a heavy machine with the capability of killing folks.
You guys have a tough job. I have nothing but respect for you. Stay safe!
I always feel safer when it's commercial driver because they are so nice to let you walk! if it's some random car you have no idea
@@rws91942 But pedestrians have a duty to take reasonable care for their own safety.
I think awareness from all parties involved would be appreciated
I get it, going to and from work every day is a chore and you love to pass the time on your phone, but have some common courtesy when in dense areas of traffic ped or car, we're all in this mess together least you can do is keep your head up when there's a lot going on, I don't condone it but really look at your phone on a back road at 3am, don't be completely oblivious at 9:30am on a Tuesday in the busiest spot in town!
I'm in the UK so I'm not sure why I got recommended this, however this is something we've had for decades and it works, it also helps drivers because they can see if someone is about to cross and don't have to creep up to the crossing just in case someone is there.
The UK also has the zigzaggy lines when approaching a crosswalk. SF doesn't even want to paint the curb to signify this change. They just want a new revenue source from motorists 🤣🤣
Same in Germany...Minimum 5m distance in Front of crosswalks and intersections
i wonder if tourists will be aware...
trust me when I say tourist know how to cross the street.
Nope easy money 💴
I learned in Kindergarten to look both ways before crossing the street, and not to step out into traffic. We had really good teachers back then - we were very privileged!
Drivers don't care. Saving 2 seconds to get to the next red light is more important than your life
The big difference are cell phones, and much larger cars that block views especially near corners. Looking both ways might not be enough today.
The bulletin board clearly said "Stop, Look, And Listen". Holmdale Kindergarten, 1965.
Not all responsibility should be placed on pedestrians. Pedestrians are rarely truly at fault in collisions with them. The most responsible should be placed on city planners to make cities pedestrian friendly and a good little bit should be placed on drivers.
Cucked for cars 😂
Can I still park my shopping cart outside my tent at a crosswalk though?
absolutely
This comment should be pinned lol
Depends on how you identify your cart

This law is almost as good as the $900 retail thefts law.
They need to just warn businesses owners not to open a store downtown. It’s a ghost town already. Nobody can drive on Market, and now when you try to park nearby you’ll get a ticket in an unmarked spot. Then your car window will be smashed. Enjoy your day in downtown SF! If you take BART it’s super expensive and no where to park on the other side, as well as being filled with junkies muttering and threatening everyone. This is why the city is losing every business downtown, as well as crazy rent prices for retail. Then the supervisors will be shocked that there are no more retail establishments in the downtown area.
Legalized crime 😂
😂
The parking patrol used to make generate good revenue outside a Jack In The Box that I used to go to. They'd nail cars that would park where all the red paint was completely worn off and cars that parked anywhere close to the fire hydrant.
Visiting California a few months ago it’s was absolutely insane that it was legal to park on top of crosswalks. It was very dangerous trying to cross the street in San Francisco.
I’m used to 25 feet in New Jersey. Most states require 20 some odd feet.
This is nothing new, this is California being way behind the rest of the country.
Agreeee
It was never legal. The city just does an intentionally terrible job of marking red zones as part of their corruption. People with cars in SF are the only ones with money, and the city uses them as income centers to make up for the massive budget shortfalls resulting from moronic policy driven by radical leftists and powerful local lobbies. For a good time research San Francisco Auto Return, it's rather enlightening.
It’s NOT legal to park on top of crosswalks. What are you talking about….
@@moogs He meant parking right up to the white line. What he said can be interpreted either way.
I live in Nevada. Most definitely a 20 feet clearance is practiced. For the large foot traffic on the strip. I think it revolves about 25 feet. Yeah... I would say California is behind the times. I frequent Arizona and Utah. Their ADA laws do have a 20 foot crosswalk clearance too.
I got a thousand texts to vote but I can’t get a recap of the new laws I’m supposed to magically know about?
Texting all registered drivers in California would require opt-in and consent from 27 million licensed drivers.
My neighbor down the street always parks his two large trucks on the corner and blocks the handicap ramps. It also forces cars to turn extra wide on the corner. You also cannot see oncoming cars.
If the curb isn’t marked, there is no way this law survives its first lawsuit.
Not parking in unmarked crosswalks has been law for decades, and has survived. So will this one. And the fact that you don't want it to is just ugly.
@@climateanxiety2825 it’s not an unmarked crosswalk. It’s an un painted curb with no markings to indicate it’s illegal to park there. Lack of permanent markings makes the law subjective to interpretation on what exactly “20 feet” is.
It has not been the law for decades, hence the need for the state to create a new law for it
When the state creates a law with no cure for enforcement it has in fact created an ambiguous law that is ripe for abuse.
This law will be unenforceable until the curbs are painted.
And last but not least: you assume you know what I want or do not want, and assert that your self declared “want” is just ugly. In fact, you assuming anything about me at all and self declaring you know what my wants are is just ugly.

paint them red, duh!
Duh is their middle name 😂
i don't mind the rule, but the expectation that people just guess 20 feet from the crosswalk is stupid at best, the law should require every city to mark those areas so people won't park, and if you park well then give them a ticket. i guess they just want to make money.
This is great! Too many cars just ram through crosswalks and really don't care if they hit someone. I do think that they should paint the area red to help.
And stupid pedestrians with their faces buried in their phones not paying attention expecting others to care about them more than they care and take responsibility for themselves 😂 aka fools
@@karelglasner2673 Why are you afraid of pedestrians when car drivers killed over 4,000 people in California last year? Irresponsible car drivers pose a much bigger threat than someone walking while looking at their phone.
Even though they are losing money on meters near the crosswalks in major cities they are going to gain more money in tickets throughout the state. They know this and that's why they aren't going to mark those areas in red. But of course they are "justified" because they are saying they "hope" it saves lives because the state is all about saving lives right...
This law has existed for many years in other states and other parts of the world for decades. It has proven to work.
they're not painting it because it's a state road rule and not an mta parking rule
It's all about the state earning money. 🤑 If they paint the curb red, then that would mean paying workers to paint the curb, in addition to purchasing the paint brushes, paint, tape etc.
They paint lanes, put road markers, display the speed limits on freeways and in neighborhoods, post signs about yielding and sharp turns. These are all rules of the road most if not all should know by having a drivers license. What makes this new rule any different? Also consider the fact that we've had parking near cross walks for how long now? Since the invention of crosswalks and parking spaces. Come on. If it was just about saving lives there are many more pressing issues that could be tackled without profiting on.@@JasonBoyce
This is San Francisco, painting 20 feet red will cost about $6000+ each. Somebody has to set up the No Parking a-frames 3 days in advance. On the day a crew of 4 will come out; 2 will actually handle the paint, one will man the leaf blower and the 4th will sit in the truck drinking something. Repeat for the other 3 corners
In my area of SF it will be impossible to park now because of this.
I don’t know if this law is the right solution but I certainly see the danger. I’m a cautious and observant driver but I admit I have missed pedestrians crossing on the right, especially when there is a large pickup truck or something parked there.
I’ve since adjusted my habits; I now look left for pedestrians as I approach, then cautiously look right for pedestrians (the blind spot at the focus of this story), then back left for autos, then right for autos.
We all like plentiful parking but at the end of the day preserving human life must be the priority.
It's mostly drugged out bums that don't even look before they cross.
And stupid pedestrians with their faces buried in their phones not paying attention expecting others to care about them more than they care and take responsibility for themselves 😂 aka fools
SF should start giving tickets out to people who look at there phones while crossing the street... i mean that is a huge market that they could make huge potential gains for the city!
Start requiring registrations for bikes and auto ticketing every one that runs a red light or stop sign. City budget balanced in one year.
People walking while looking at their phone aren't hurting anybody though. It's people that drive a car irresponsibly that killed over 4,000 people in California last year. So of course, that's where the enforcement should be focused.
@@mariusfacktor3597 I find it funny you condone the recklessness of the Walker, but you put all the liability on the driver. Well they better paint those areas near cross walks RED ... 🚓 🚨!!!
By law they have to otherwise park wherever you deem fit. VEH § 21458
Of course people *should* pay attention when crossing the street, but the law has *always* made it clear that drivers must always be prepared to suddenly stop to prevent accident. Before this devolves into an "us vs. them" / "anti-car vs. pro-car" yelling match, let's keep in mind that the person looking down at their phone while crossing the street may well be on their way to/from their parked car. Most of us use more than one form of transportation, be it driving, walking, cycling, public transit, ride sharing... The law makes sense to me, but I agree that the city ought to paint the curbs red - and until they do so, they should be issuing warnings but not actual citations.
Is it only for marked crosswalks? Because technically, unless clearly marked, all intersections are crosswalks. Otherwise the pedestrian is “J-walking,” if they are not crossing at a corner.
There’s no such thing as “J-walking” in California anymore
Now we will have more cars circling the block, frustrated, late for appointments, and probably rushing because they cannot find parking. What will that do for safety?
They will use their adult brains to make the mental calculation that engaging in vehicular manslaughter is not worth the time to be late for their appointment. It's baffling society treats motorists like entitled, spoiled children. Incentivizing those who can make the trip with safer alternatives (public transit, biking, walking, etc.) frees up the roads for the drivers that actually have the need to drive, such as the elderly or disabled, until cities can get their act together and improve transit systems and city designs to minimize the need to drive. And hey, a more transit oriented city structure is a win for drivers who now have to deal with less traffic, road wear, and other would-be drivers who probably hate driving and would be the irresponsible who would carry out your imagined scenario ;)
Should we call the wambulance? Move to the suburbs if you want to drive everywhere expecting parking

Lower the meter fees you scoundrels!!!
When meter prices are too low the spots fill up and you can't find a space. I'd rather find a space and pay an extra buck than circle the block for 20 minutes.
I am 49 years old & always remember that this was in the driver's hand book to at least park 2 car lengths from any corner or crosswalk
We need to carry a ruler now 😂
Smart phones have a built-in app to measure distances.
Maybe at the same time do something about pedestrians who step into the street and cross it without so much as a glance at oncoming traffic.
People claiming San Francisco is "anti-car" are absolutely ignorant Americans. San Francisco like all of America was built/re-modeled around cars and is still car-centric.
San Francisco was largely built before cars. Most of the car infrastructure was filled in as cars because popular. That don't mean SF have become anti-car lately. All the street redesigns and restructuring of laws all to discourage driving. Not that all these are bad changes, but calling a spade a spade.
In Minnesota this is already illegal, you can't even park near corners over here and there's a sign that will tell you that.
This won't matter if the drivers do not pay attention while they are driving or are speeding. Better to lower speed limit down or have some sort of speed management system like speed bumps.

How would out of state drivers know about this, until they get a ticket? There may even be a parking meter there? WTF
Parking near a crosswalk illegal .
Shitting on the crosswalk perfectly ok .
I always thought you weren't supposed to park within 15-20 feet of a crosswalk. That's what I learned in Driver's Ed about 20 years ago. However, I was in Driver's Ed in Illinois and this law has been the rule there since I could remember.
In California "Look both ways before you cross no longer applies" 😅🤣😂
Honestly, if you want to drop pedestrian deaths, the city has to put more effort into enforcing pedestrian laws... I mean, how many times do you see people just head out right into the middle of traffic when they have a no-walk sign? Especially drug users, I have seen quite a few people just stumble out in front of cars, completely unaware they are even in the street and get hit, and the drivers are the ones getting the blame.
I thought I was crazy when I thought this kind of law was needed to save lives. I drive a lot so I definitely agree that pedestrians are very difficult to see when cars are parked right next to crosswalks, especially SUV and vans.

Chicago is similar however there are 'No Parking Tow Away" sign indicating this at every corner.
Since we have snow in Canada, we just have signs that say "No parking" and an arrow. You can park on the inside of signs where there are no arrows. If there are arrows pointing both ways, you simply can't park there.
You were never allowed to park this close to a crosswalk anyway. So less people get hit. Wait! Nope people still get hit. They play with their smart phones, the light changes in their favor, they stand there not moving, the drivers are trying to make eye contact and then eventually the driver executes the turn. Ther person on the phone finally looks, sees the light and steps off the curb into moving traffic.
It's easier to blame the car because it's harder to die in one (and the government doesn't like you having one) but a rule of driving is that if you didn't see the light change in your favor, the light is considered "stale" which means you have no idea when it turned green and how long it will stay that way. The same should apply to people crossing the street but since they don't drive, they don't have to pass a test to walk.
Government should text all cell phone owners the link to existing laws and common sense every year by December to educate people ahead of the new year. Why aren't lawmakers think about this?
There's a common parking technique used in the City, especially if you drive a large work vehicle like a van or box truck.
You have another car that you can use to placehold. A car that exists for the sole purpose of parking another.
The easiest place to make that "musical chairs" maneuver is at the corners.
The result is that very large vehicles are at every corner making visibility a very real concern.
The best plan was to go through and paint a third crosswalk line. It was a great plan in theory... But they quickly learned that most drivers don't understand what the third line is.
The next best option is to go through the entire city and red zone the curbs.
Even if you put spike strips on the corners; You're going to have couriers, corner store customers, delivery drivers, "just ran up to grab something" people parking in the spot.
Lack of parking isn't fixed by less parking to "encourage" less cars. That's just not going to happen.
This is why kids are taught to cross at a light.
And adults are taught to pay attention.
Buses: “we will look at those. “ They will look but not do.
20 ft is crazy. why not treat it like fire hydrant
Typical California. Make new laws and don't tell the citizens
I don't even live in California and I've been hearing about this non-stop for months! Ignorance is not an excuse
4 less parking spaces per block now. It does seem like it would make crossing safer though.
2 parking spots gone and the meters are still there.
my parents encourage me to get a car and this is like one of the dozens of reasons to not own one. I only have a few pros for owning one
Americans can't figure out how long 20 feet is without red paint. This has been the law in Canada for the longest time and no one seems to have a problem figuring out how far that is.
I lived in the Bay Area for 30 years and SF is a nightmare for parking. But I think this is a good law. Pedestrians shouldn't be at the mercy of inattentive drivers. And if you're a driver who hits and injures a pedestrian your life is going to be upended too. No amount of extra parking is worth the extra tragedy.
I like this law. I will have a harder time finding parking but it makes sense that it will safer for pedestrians.
your telling me you couldn't afford a tape measure that goes 30 feet im pretty sure they are like $35 and $40 for the 35 foot ones tsk tsk tsk...
Now? California is only prohibiting parking within twenty feet of a crosswalk now? Washington state has prohibited parking within twenty feet of a crosswalk since at least 1965.
I like blinking green light before it turns yellow. It reduces drivers from running red lights
Paint it. People are not too smart, but in a hurry. So what about scooters, electric skateboars and bikes. A lot of them run through crosswalks regardless of stoplights. No hand signals when turning onto sidewalks running into each other and pedestrians.
This would be overkill in any other state, but having lived in California, this is a positive step forward. California’s traffic is insane. Residential areas right next to highways, insane turns, cars going 30-40 mph right next to your apartment, 70+ on highways. You take your life in your hands every time you go outside. I saw a lambo upside down on the curb when I arrived in the state.
Well, thank goodness! This will balance California’s budget and reduce violent crime at the same time!
Legalized crime up to $900 per incident 😂 organized crime at its best 😂 I haven't crossed either bridge into San Francisco since 2020 and won't be until the Ratchets queens and Grifters running things into the ground are booted 😂
The day they start enforcing the laws against organized crime is when a single dollar of mine gets spent in San Francisco
I hope we revisit this and get some Public Health doctors to remark upon what the impacts to health might be. Because as an old man and a pedestrian, I can tell you that my head has to be on a swivel the second I step out my front door. We never know if a car or a MUNI is going to attack. And that's not good for our health.
The reduction in pedestrian blood pressure and the downstream health effects of that, not to mention fewer injuries/deaths, are going to save our City, and our state, a ton of money. It'd be nice to have a wild guess estimate of how much that might amount to. There's really no risk in throwing a number out there, as long as we represent it correctly - and it is a social+political win.
Reducing Risk wherever we can is a huge task that will inch us closer to being able to justify Universal Single-Payer healthcare. And anything that makes this a more pleasant place to live is good for almost every aspect of state economy. [It is also important to frame this as Reducing Risk & Damage because selfishness from the automobile-based minds want nothing but Autobahns from their driveways to their destinations.]
It's not going to stop the ones who walk when it says don't walk or the jay walkers. I've seen foos just step out and expect cars to stop.
If the corners are painted red, that would cost money and maintenance and people would not want to pay for that either
Here is a simple solution, cross when the lights are green and not red. There you go.
The new laws do not seem to have any effect. I observe that there are around 10 to 15 cars without license plates. I even saw a car with an expired tag from 1989 parked near a fire hydrant in a red zone. Although patrol cars might notice these violations, no action is taken. I have never witnessed a police officer issuing a ticket for illegal parking. Once, while I was driving in Oakland, I pointed out to a cop that a car was parked on a red zone bus stop, but his response was that it was not his job to take action. Instead, it was the parking meter officer's responsibility. I was surprised and confused by his statement.
How about people from out of state (although some states have it this way already - some), how are they supposed to know? Paint it red, it's common sense and straight forward.
this is a certified hood classic
It’s so bad here in Concord Ca. People blowing thru crosswalks while kids are on their way to school mixed with these people Parkin on corners and in crosswalks is infuriating because enforcement is not happening here! Code enforcement needs to increase for this problem!
And yet breaking into cars is still effectively legal
That's a loss of 8 parking spaces per intersection. :(
No stopping either. Especially Ride Shares. Those Uber drivers just stop in the middle of the street or double parked anywhere, and that needs to stop too.
If you thought finding a parking space was hard before, HAS CALIFORNIA GOT A KICK TO THE CHEST FOR YOU 😂😂😂😂
Paint the curb red then wtf? Do they expect everyone read the news?
This is a great solution.
Where we live there is a 20 meter zero parking zone before cross walks.
maybe if the people in the city actually followed the rules maybe they wouldn't get hit. So many people not using the cross walk or even if they do use the cross walk they don't follow the signs they just go as they please. To be honest the whole city is fucked up and dirty beyond belief... they should really clean up the streets so fucking dirty....
Since the early '70s zig zag lines either side of crossings in the UK mark areas where parking is forbidden, but I think even before this there were metal studs to mark the no-parking zone. I was born in 1964 and basically can't remember any other situation. I'm really shocked that San Francisco only just thought about this. But yay for safety.

In Vallejo no cars would stop for you in a cross walk it’s still up to pedestrians to watch for oncoming cars
It's all about the state earning money. 🤑 If they paint the curb red, then that would mean paying workers to paint the curb, in addition to purchasing the paint brushes, paint, tape etc.
.. this is going to make parking difficult?.. jeez.. theres one idiot lives in our neighbor hood who hast at minimum of 10 vehicles that does not drive and stores them on the street.. moving them once in a while.. its ridiculous!.. how does Parking Enforcement not see that and come around without having to report "Abandoned" vehicles?!..
I love how he defended distracted pedestrians. It’s everyone’s responsibility, not just those behind the wheel.
Irresponsible pedestrians with their faces buried in their phones not paying attention expecting others to care about them more than they care and take responsibility for themselves 😂 aka fools
in the tenderloin, they aren't distracted. it seems like even the people not on drugs are running/walking through when traffic is supposed to go
It makes perfect sense. Someone walking without paying attention isn't going to harm anybody. But somebody driving without paying attention is poised to kill someone. The driver has a responsibility to everyone around to not kill them with their car. Someone walking has no such responsibility.
There should be a ballot measure to repeal this law. I’d choose more parking over safety. Plus how many millions of dollars are going to be wasted for compliance not worth it.
Castro Valley residents will receive highest tkts, totally in support of this.
Imagine abiding by the rules of the five parking signs on a block only to get a ticket for parking too close to a crosswalk...smh
