You got me pumped thinking about this era of Conan, so I went back and looked. Around this time, all the "hot artists" were doing covers for Conan. There's Ron Lim, Mignola, McFarlane, Art Adams, Portacio, and Texiera covers, among others. Really awesome covers.
I was too young to catch Roy Thomas' first stint on the book. When I first started reading Conan it was in the late 80's, and I think it was Jim Owlsey and Val Semekis, and man, it was awesome; right around the late 100's and early 200's. The Heku Trilogy is still one of my favorite Conan stories ever.
I was also really into King Conan around the same time. There was something about a middle-aged Conan - who was still young enough to physically throw down, but old enough to also have some wisdom - that I thought was fascinating. Seeing him as king of Aquilonia and having to defend his kingdom from enemies both foreign and domestic was interesting. It was also cool seeing him in the role of father to Prince Conn. I felt like it added dimensions and depth to the character that we didn't always get in the regular Conan title.

this is what comics need to realize, is our heroes need growth rather than the "sliding timeline" like what Claremont was trying to do with X-Men before Marvel pivoted.
Give a new generation fresh INTERESTING IN DEPTH characters that learn the wisdom of the original characters.
I can't wait to dive into the other Conan books I found at that Garage Sale. Stay tuned homeslice!

@@ChrisMacPresents Spider-Man was a similar situation. He generally had consistent character growth from the beginning until One More Day. It feels like in the 2000's, Marvel started to give up on continuity, character growth, and acknowledging the past.

@@SamGuthrie1977 it's like the big 2 were both trying to, and still are, recreate Crisis on Infinite Earth's and failing spectacularly lol

@@ChrisMacPresents Yeah, they're constantly trying to appeal to a new audience. I get that, and I don't blame them for seeking new customers. But they'd also be well-served to cater to us old-school existing fans a bit more.

@@SamGuthrie1977 I agree. That's why I appreciated the main Comics were separate from the main titles growing up. Drives me batty that a lot of the main titles now read like bad Tumblr web comics or really bad depressing fan fiction drama. Even a lot of the younger audience books are semi cringe
