  • Lots of people make this mistake when they play Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. With classical music, it's pretty important to play pieces the way that the composers wrote them. In this video, I show you what the common mistake is and how to fix it. All links below:

When I started learning this piece I was told that the "trouble" note should played as if you forgot about it and then, in the last moment and "hurriedly" remembered adding it. These words still pops into my mind when I play it.

When I learn the new piece, I always play it VERY slow in the start. Sometimes maybe even 10 times slower than it's supposed to be. I use slow metronome settings. Little by little I set metronome faster till I get it done. That's why in the end I know it by heart.

Thank you for this, Marina 🙂 It is a subtle mistake, that I honestly didn't know if I made on top of my head. The only way to find out was to go to to the piano and start playing. I didn't make the mistake in the section discussed/demonstrated in the video, but I certainly did in measure 23 right after the arpeggio. It felt right, but I promise you and Beethoven that I will never do it again 😇

Lately I relearned the first 3 and have made progress on the 4th. I’m a little stuck on your (and my) favorite part, but am determined to get to the end. Thanks for bringing this to our attention, even though it might seem an obvious thing.
Maintaining rhytm is crucial for playing this piece.
Interestingly, personally for me it's rather easy to play this "second voice" melody correctly while it stays in right hand, but once it moves to LH starting with measure 60, it becomes quite a challenge, especially when finger 5 has to play and hold an additional B#, C# and G# below. Your advice here makes me remember to put extra effort in practising this particular element.

pay attention to the last two triplets in measure 37 for proper accents in RH. not all sheet music editions show it correctly. I was playing it wrong until I listened (after some time) to how Arrau played it and only then understood it.

I am wondering why she doesn't explain that in measure 5, the G# 's are a 4 against three rhythm with the triplet? When she says 1, 2, 3 and 1, she risks that that student will play a sextuplet against the triplet, which is actually the common mistake that students make. She needs to explain how to play the dotted eighth sixteenth rhythm against the triplet.

I have heard someone (and I am not giving any name 😛) interpreted the "Quasi una fantsia" in the title as a permission to be a bit lax about the rythm. But in this video it is very clear, that you and Ludwig are adamant, that there are restrictions on how lax one can be.
Perhaps an idea to talk about the meaning and non-meaning of "Quasi una fantasia" in a video some day?

    • @ThePianoKeys

Everyone has to have a point of entry. A beginner won't play Moonlight Sonata as well as someone with more experience, but maybe that will lead to them wanting to get more into the study of piano. For others, it's enough just to be able to play it at their own level and they're done. 😁
