I never had acne before I started messing around with skin ‘care’ products. My face would just get rinsed in the shower and I had zero issues. When I began introducing a gentle cleanser I had minimal acne and now having added benzoyl peroxide and SA I’ve really messed up my skin. This video is a great reminder to bring it back to the basics. I’m currently doing two gentle cleanses a day but hope to get down to one soon! It’s been a tough way to learn not to fix what isn’t broken.

I think the whole exfoliating rage began with the god-awful St. Ive's apricot kernel scrub from the 1980's. We were programmed to think that shiny skin is polished skin...aka: extra smooth. I use an exfoliant so seldom now, maybe once per month or every other month. And it's pretty mild stuff, no physical scrubs.

My Father is a carpenter, sanding is for wood, NOT something to be done to skin! As I have gotten older (now in my 50's) the amount of exfoliating has increased from 1-2 times per week to 4-5 times. However the type of exfoliation is more gentle, went from glycolic to lactic acid. Added in Azelaic acid and many more barrier repair serums such as Stratia Liquid Gold.

I'm a diabetic, work as a mortician and I used to use exfoliating gloves on my whole body, daily. I like to feel nice and clean. You mentioned over exfoliating. You are so right. I ended up with cellulitis on both lower legs. A perfect storm my Doctor called it. Not nice at all. You can get it on your face and other areas too.

I know it's not funny at all, but something about your use of of "im a diabetic and work as a mortician" really made me smile. Maybe because those two things are so random and not related to each other. On a more serious note, i'm curious, how is being diabetic connected to to developing cellulitis after heavy exfoliating? Would you never develop cellulitis if you were not diabetic at the same time? If you feel comfortaable describing your case in more detail i would be very interested!

    • @macca777
      @macca777 2 года назад +3

@@heroinheroine6929 lol, no, I have a funny sense of humour myself. Diabetics don't heal as quickly as a normal healthy person. Wounds are a thing we have to look out for, especially on our legs and feet. Amputations are worse case scenarios, well . . death is but you know what I mean. Because I exfoliated every day, my body was covered in micro abrasions. Somehow, even though I'm careful, I've managed to pick up a bug which entered via the abrasions on my legs. I don't know if I picked it up from work, probably not with all the PPE I wear. Wearing the PPE for long hours is hot and sweaty and just made for a perfect incubator. I don't know if it would happen if I wasn't a diabetic. The only people I've known to have had cellulitis have been deceased. It was very painful. Like walking through razor grass with bare legs. It didn't help that I'm allergic to penicillin but eventually I got it sorted.

I took your advice on this from a different video a few weeks ago. I have always had dry skin, and redness on my cheeks for as long as I can remember. I was exfoliating at least a few times a week. I stopped that completely and upped my moisturizer game, and I noticed a difference pretty quickly. The redness is less, and my skin doesn't look or feel as crusty as it used to get. I thought stopping exfoliating would make my makeup look terrible on top of my skin, but actually after the first week or so it's completely fine and doesn't look bad at all. I wish I had known this years ago, I think I've just spent a long time damaging my skin...

I was doing some research today because I was wondering why I was having so much acne and skin irritation under my lower lip area even though I was scrubbing everyday. At first I thought it was because I was growing a beard and maybe had some ingrown hairs, or it was cold sores from stress. I realized after doing a ton of research that my chin is really sensitive compared to the rest of my face and I was over exfoliating it. Hopefully after a week or so of avoiding using my face scrub my skin will heal and I can try gently scrubbing once a week. Thank you for the help!

Baking soda is NOT good for acne, I dunno who told you that, but please stop. I hope this is a joke. This comment has to be a joke. I’m just gonna throw some sourdough starter on my face and see what it does, why not, it’s in my kitchen and I can eat it, right? Who cares about hat my dermatologist prescribed, she has no idea what she’s doing, she’s just a medical doctor and all, I don’t need dapsone and tretinoin when I have a kitchen! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Like this dippy hippy I know who wanted to know what oils to use for dry skin when freaking Eucerin is made for a reason! 🤯

I've tried everything with exfoliants over decades. The best, by far, is wiping a warm, wrung-out Chux Magic Eraser once (maximum twice) over my skin that I've cleaned with Ponds cold creme. Phenomenal! (Go easy and gentle). (No more than once a week!) (Castor oil patted on is the gentlest moisturizer I've ever tried, too.)

Periodt! That’s why i try my best to just simplify my skincare routine. Some people with severely impaired moisture barrier will still use the “but skincare is an EXPERIENCE” my moisturizer should have fragrance, i gotta have eye serum, i gotta have aha/bha, i gotta use scrubs cos skincare is an experience and personal excuse to justify their ten thousand step routine lmao and im just like okay gurl go destroy your skin even more.

I think it’s time to take a couple weeks off any exfoliation for me.. my skin has been dry this winter and just in the last day or two I’ve gotten little whiteheads around my chin and between my eyebrows that are probably from over using salicylic acid and adapalene in a rotating every night. And then I slather Vaseline on my lips because they’ve been so dry but I end up getting zits right in my lip line right now I have two. That’s why I keep using the exfoliants! It’s so frustrating

I'm pretty prone to PIH and AHAs help a lot, so I'm glad my skin tolerates exfoliation so well. I can slap that gool ol' The Ordinary peel on for half an hour twice a week with no irritation. I'm careful about avoiding any other potentially irritating ingredients (vitamin C, high concentrations of niacinamide, spot treatments, etc.) for 12 hours before and after, and I wear my sunscreen if I'm going to see more than ~15 minutes of daylight (which most people do every day, but I work nights and use blackout curtains to sleep, so in deep winter I often see very little sun, even through windows). I use barrier-supporting ingredients after every peel, like panthenol and niacinamide (only 3% niacinamide after a peel) and ceramides. And I'm very careful about rinsing with room-temperature water, patting dry, etc. My skin does a lot for me, so I try to be good to it!

Happy Friday Dr Dray and everyone . I know I over exfoliating years ago . WHich is probably the worst thing for acne prone sensitive skin . I remember the buf puf , apricot and walnut scrubs . Years ago cosmetic and skin care companies would say all your skin issues were from not exfoliating . Have a fabulous day . Love to mom and Tybee xoxoxoxo

  • @SpringChickensOnlyMan

My exfoliator was a daily facial scrub but the burning has increased a bit so I think I’m slowing down. If you over did it don’t worry you can still recover. Just take a break from exfoliating, washing your face, or even putting anything on it and let your face do what it wants to until it’s smooth again. I was gonna do 4 days a week but I think now I’m going back down to only 2. I know it’s not much exfoliating for a daily product. Exfoliating isn’t necessarily important. Your skin might not look great if you don’t exfoliate but you’re still perfectly fine it’s just you overdo it then that gets to be the real problem.
I saw this on the internet always put moisturizer on after exfoliating. Do not try to exfoliate without moisturizer ever

I’m so happy that I realized my oily skin wasn’t the biggest thing causing my acne; it’s dirt and irritation from dehydration that makes it the worst. My acne always flares up worse in dry, cold conditions.

Today, I purchased the Garnier SkinActive HA Hydrating Deep Cleanser. On the product, it seems to fit my need but I hope it's not too much. Otherwise, I have the Aveeno Daily Moisturising body wash.
