This helped me TONS!! Our washing machine broke 2 days ago & has just now been fixed by a maintenance guy. He told me about using baking soda & vinegar to get rid of the smell but I didn't have a clue on HOW to do it properly. Thanks for posting this, you were a great help!😊
Thank you so much! I never get the time to comment on RUclips videos, but I wanted to stop here and say this was SUPER helpful. I think it's so great that you taking time out of your days to make videos like these to help people out there in the world like me. People like me appreciate you. God Bless!
This video was amazing!! I followed every step, and mine is on a 90’ cycle as I write this, the load is halfway, and my drum is half full of what looks like dirty water, and other half has lots of soap! So it’s definitely working! I can’t wait to do a load now! Thanks from Stace in Scotland 🏴 😁
This only cleans the drum. To fully eliminate odors, you have to disassemble the machine to remove the drum from the tub and clean the interior of the drum. What often happens is the residue will cling to the tub which you can't see by looking into the drum. Routinely doing the vinegar/baking soda reduces the buildup inside the tub. Sadly many never do a cleaning of their washing machine and the buildup gets so bad that nothing gets rid of the odor.
I just bought new lg washer and dryer’s. It’s about a 10 minute operation to unscrew the agitator, lift the top, remove the white ring and lift the tub out. The plastic outer tub and outside of the removed inner need scrubbed and cleaned with bleach and a hose or pressure washer. Leave the top up after each wash and use a cleaning agent monthly!!!
Found this checking out your channel after watching the Krause & Becker Paint Sprayer video. Will try this, maybe it will help with the occasionally bad smelling sump pump too. Now if only I can figure out how to prevent mold in the front loading washer gasket. (We have two washers, two dryers - house designed for large multi-generations family. Life-saver when one unit goes down needing repair or replacement.)
Thanks for this! I liked the pro tip of pouring water by the lid/washer interface to get that gunk out of there. I tilted the lid up and ran it down the lid to get the gunk there to flush out. Only thing I'd add is I tried dumping the solution into the bleach reservoir with impunity like in the video, but didn't read the "Max 1 cup" note on the washer and got overflow out the bottom of my Whirlpool. Noted for next time, I even put the wife's toothbrush back, just as recommended! I'm hoping this done a couple of times a year, plus a recommendation in another video of using a funnel to pour one cup of bleach down the pipe where one sticks the washer's water outlet tube (which should have a trap down there gathering gunk) to let sit overnight, will get rid of the odor issues.
Thank you for this! My clothes have been coming out smelling funky, and I use good detergent and laundry beads. My clothes usually smell amazing until recently & the smell is driving me crazy. Trying this out now 🤗
Thank you, great video & exactly what I was looking for! The Mr. Clean Eraser sponge tip is priceless (our last tenant left a disgusting soap scum ring inside the washer when she left & this should take care of that)! Bless you!
Thats Awesome! Glad it helped ya. Hey have you looked at jerky subscriptions? I just subscribed to one that sends different jerky from all over the USA to try. Click this link to check it out. bit.ly/3p8XCZk Thank You for your comment and for watching
Man, I used this and some other stuff like a 1/3rd cup of bleach in another load, as well as tide oxi (which you can get at Wally World, too) and it all worked. Now it smells clean as a newborn baby. Thanks!
So I always thought the washing machine was the cause of the smell until we bought a brand new washing machine still had the smell turns out the wife had been leaving the clothes sit in the washing machine after they got done washing for like 3 hours before putting them in the dryer after we corrected that smell went away
Because hair and nasty stuff gets stuck in the pipes themselves not inside the washing machine but the pipes that run to outside for drainage they get clogged with residue and grimey muck
I believe it's actually soap scum from the laundry detergent packs I use in mine. Also, the additives, to make laundry smell good, leave an ungodly amount of residue in the holes in the drum. Over time, that greasy residue collects filth from dirty clothes and starts smelling. This video is the perfect thing to use to get rid of it, though. I stopped using the additives altogether after seeing what a mess it made of my machine.
thanks for sharing bro. our washing maching stinks since its in the garage. It's summertime so if we forget to leave it open after putting clothes in dryer its stinks the nice time we use it. Trying using the "clean" function. Still stinks.
This should help out a lot. Years and Years ago we had the same issue as your having. That's when I learned how to clean the washing machine. My sister was having the same problem so I told her I would make a video showing how to do it. Thanks for the awesome comment. I hope you have a great week
Honestly ,I don't think my washer would let me do this even if I wanted to 😂. It locks the lid once cycle starts. It does have a self clean cycle though.
@@VansWorld Ok thanks for that advice. I'll have to look for the cleaning vinegar next chance I have. My additional question now is this- will the vinegar, either distilled white or cleaning, definitely remove black dirt flakes (which I can see through the tub holes, using flashlight) that are still stuck on the inner drum? wall at the uppermost level...? I've already done a hot water full capacity wash with Clorox bleach, and the next step I will be doing is the same thing but using the distilled white vinegar I have on hand. And I'm crossing my fingers that the vinegar will be stronger to remove the numerous black dirt flakes that I can see are still stuck on the inner drum wall...
Hi Van, I was still eager to know your thoughts about the effectiveness of the vinegar to completely dissolve off and remove the black dirt specks that I can see through the tub holes are still stuck to the uppermost area of the inner drum wall. Thanks.
@@VansWorld Hi. I did use a rag cloth (before letting the hot water bleach cycle continue, after it had sat for an hour) to scrub/rub all around the top of the tub wall, it certainly is clean on the inside of the tub, but the inner drum wall looking through the tub holes is where the stuck on black dirt specks still can be seen.
Vinegar and baking soda only cancel each other out if you use them together. They don't cancel each other if you use them in separate wash cycles, like he did in this demo.
Hi Van, Mine is brand new but this will keep it that way, I'm hoping. Great tip. I have never paid any attention to vinegar very much so I didn't know they had Cleaning vinegar. I will now look for it. Thanks for the great tips and video. Have a great week. ; D
Yep. Cleaning vinegar is stronger than regular vinegar. I have been doing ours every 6 months or so for a long time. I hope you have a great weekend too shirl 👍😁
I was wondering if anybody has the same problem where there are “flakes,” that lingers are your clothes. I sanitized my drum, but there are still mold flakes that still show up. Should I be worried?
I’ve found that sometimes dryers have to be disassembled and remove the lint buildup. It maybe that you will have to call a repair shop and have them do it.
Please someone tell me how to clean off the mould/mildew of the rubber seal part of the washing machine! I have baking soda but no vinegar. I’ve tried lemon juice with baking soda but it doesn’t work
I would try Oxy Clean (make a paste with water).... Always let your product sit a while, to give it time to do its thing. Mold killing and stain removal is work for the product, and it needs time to do it. 😊
Mixing baking soda and vinegar neutralizes both.... meaning the properties of each, that give their their efficacy, become inert. This is because vinegar is acidic, and baking soda is alkaline.
I have found that the sudsing caused by adding the two can be very useful, though. I've had it push clogs/grime out of sink drains. I am not sure, but perhaps it does the same in the washer pump and hoses.

i was going to LIKE it anyway, then when you put your toofbrush back in the bathroom next to the paste. I got a laugh outta that. funny!
That machine is like it never was cleaned for 50yrs.
What’s about the lid on the right side? It looks like mold or rust or something needs cleaning and do you HAVE to use cleaning vinegar?
I can't figure out how my washing machine smells since it always having soap and some
bleach running through it all the time. I need to try this.

Super helpful! I do have a question about the middle piece inside the washer you cleaned with the toothbrush. Do all agitators open up like that?
I believe most do just pull off. 😀👍

Oh man I'm going to try this!
Never seen cleaning vinegar before I just use regular vinegar
It’s a bit stronger than regular vinegar
Im 41. Ive legit never seen cleaning vinegar. Is it the same as white vinegar?
No it’s stronger. It actually says cleaning vinegar on the bottle. Walmart has it in stock most of the time.

What if this doesn't work? I have used bleach twice, then baking soda and white vinegar, then a washer cleaning tablet
Try Odoban

How would I clean a front load washer?
It looked like you put the baking soda in, but no water. Is that actually how you did it?
I ran it through a hot cycle.
2 cups or 4 of vinegar???
Which ever you prefer. You can use a whole gallon if your washer is really bad smelling. It won’t hurt a thing.
Trying this now! Thanks for the tips
No problem 👍😁
Thanks much!

I've been doing this wrong my whole life I see it now!!!
Can you please explain to me why you use bicarb soda and vinegar??
One is acidic… the other is alkaline. So they cancel each other out!!
Can’t explain the science behind it. I just know it works. 😁👍
@@VansWorld right… and have you compared it to using just soda and just vinegar??

What is the root cause of a smelly washer! Very uncomfortable to even contemplate.
You have a frigidaire
You also have a GE dryer
Towards the end of the video, its just half cup of baking soda with what? 😅
This does nothing vinegar and baking soda neutralize each other leaving nothing but salt water
I have found that the sudsing caused by adding the two can be very useful, though. I've had it push clogs/grime out of sink drains. I am not sure, but perhaps it does the same in the washer pump and hoses.
