I mean it as a compliment of course! The breadth of covers are overwhelming and your dedication to figuring out oddball tunings is second to none. I also love that absolutely nothing has changed apart from video and sound quality going back, it's always been the same dude that never shows his face or talks playing the same two guitars, wearing the same 3 or 4 shirts, against the same floral wallpaper background, presumably somewhere in Eastern Europe. Are you Jason Bourne enjoying retirement by any chance? Hahaha. I kid. But I do dig that bit of "mystique" surrounding you and your channel, "don't go-a chagin'". Say, the guys at Mastery should hook you up for your Jazzmaster, you'd be an awesome representative.
This guy absolutely rips on the guitar from people thinking he's TVL from QOTSA regardless he's a great musician and could fill some big shoes let alone create his own.
@@ianlund Exactly the opposite, you should always get lighter gauge strings like 8's or something when tuning up. Using heavier strings like 11's would cause way more tension.
I'm glad people like you are posting guitar covers I actually care about. absolutely incredible work, this shit gave me chills to see up close how they got that sound. thanks so much for posting. -m
Thank you thank you THANK YOU for doing a cover of this beautifully hypnotic song. Your covers in general are amazing, and I've discovered several of my favorite bands (Deerhunter, Speedy Ortiz - Women!) through your efforts. You are part of what makes the RUclips community so great. Anyways, I'm wondering if you're a fan of, and might consider covering, some songs by these bands. - Built to Spill - Modest Mouse - Cymbals Eat Guitars - Frightened Rabbit Again, just a request - simply keeping doing exactly what you're doing would be enough: : )
I looked for this in google, your video was the first that appeared to me. Click on it and I was already suscribed, my bad man. Bell now activated. Awesome cover.
The official tab says this song is in GABDEG which you can only tune down to w regular strings. That is a really unstable tuning though and wrecks the intonation. Very likely they mix and matched string sets to work better in that tuning, as they are know to do, the guitar with 6 high E strings for example
now that I've thought about it here is a possible stringing: 5 (A -> G) 5 (A) 4 or 5 (A -> B or D -> B would both be reasonable tension) 4 (D) 3 or 4 (G -> E or D -> E bur something about having the 4th string here would feel weird) 2 (B -> G) So you probably wouldnt want to do that since I don't know what other songs that configuration would be usable for
The alternate tuning has always kept me from playing this classic. Do you find the low E strained when tuned up to G? I'm assuming the D is tuned down to B, as well as the G to D, while the B goes up to E..again...that's a lot of tension. Great playing, thanks!
Ah, that makes sense, otherwise it would be a mess going back and forth. Guess I'll have to designate one of my lesser-played electrics for some SY jams;) Thanks for the reply!
Fantastic. Do you tune the standard string to that tuning or do you re string the guitar with the nearest ? Seems so extreme to stretch the strings that far
So from standard tuning to GABDEG is that higher in pitch on all the strings or dropped tuning? I`m guessing tuned higher from the sound of the guitar. Great video btw :)))))
i really enjoy your sonic youth covers, learning a lot from watching you play, can you please tell me that when you are going to an alternate tuning from standard tuning, do you still follow the natural string order? if not doesn't it hurt the alignment if you're going up, for example, to a G from an E? and what string gauges do you use?
may I know what gauge are you using for your Jazzmaster to get all of these different tunings for sonic youth? I'm interested and your help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Different gauges for different tunings. Just get to know how tension affects on the pitch. If you need 6th up to G, get thinner string. Down to C - thicker one. Need 3rd down to D, like in this case, get .24 or .26
Honestly they used Jazzmasters for a reason. Different trem system from a strat which will pull out of tune with any string tension its not set up for. Jazzmasters tank any tuning switches like beasts.
Teenage Riot - The finest song ever written - and nicely demonstrated by this gentleman who could easily swap his shirt for his wallpaper

I’m so nervous to tune my high e to a g, it’s probably gonna break
Update: I’m okay, no strings were broken
You could've used a lighter gauge strings
Chris R I find 008’s work a treat with a very light/thin plec.
you go low, not high! get some 11's or 12's
Mine broke 😍😍
@@ianlund Exactly the opposite, you should always get lighter gauge strings like 8's or something when tuning up. Using heavier strings like 11's would cause way more tension.
Are you Thurston Moore? That was absolutely AMAZING. I thought I could play but now I know that after the intro it’s impossible. Amazing, no words
Best guitar covers on RUclips (in my humble opinion), keep 'em coming man!
Picking hand is on point. I'm more of a metal player so I've been trying to branch out and play different genres and this helped a lot. Thanks man.

There are no ups and downs, as well as no tension thing, it's always restringing with appropriate gauges, when it comes to SY.
Ah, that makes sense, otherwise it would be a mess going back and forth. Guess I'll have to designate one of my lesser-played electrics for some SY jams;) Thanks for the reply!
what gauge did you use for that tunning?
Honestly it’s really easy to play and make sound like the record in standard. If 15 yr old me could do it, you def can
cool
omg its billy corgan
fucking insane, dude. that was awesome

Wonderful!what pedal do you use for this kind of tone?
Amazing covers man, where are you from? 🤟🏻

Great work. Would love tab and your rig.
how you can tune your guitar on GABDEG ? XD
great!!
Fantastic. Do you tune the standard string to that tuning or do you re string the guitar with the nearest ? Seems so extreme to stretch the strings that far
It’s always random strings when it comes to SY.
bravo !
So from standard tuning to GABDEG is that higher in pitch on all the strings or dropped tuning? I`m guessing tuned higher from the sound of the guitar. Great video btw :)))))
lol
sparkygroover it's down tuned
sparkygroover lower pitches on the higher strings, keep the A string at A (standard) and raise the low E to G
Morning Roof so you’re saying you drop the high e all the way down to G (which would be super floppy and loose) and take the low e up to G
amazing as always. Are you in a band by any chance?
bbeaup for real? that’s actually really surprising considering the stuff he plays on his channel is vastly different from his band’s music
Anyone know where I can get tab or anything for this?
nevermind i found them

which pickups did you put into the guitar?
What type of jazzmaster are you using
John Cummings has left Mogwai. Please send them your audition tape, sure you would be a top notch replacement!
what strings should i use for sonic youth songs ?
Depends on the tunings.
Hey hey Hey, you should do a video where you responded to some comments. Just saying, you know what I'm saying. And thanks for the "play along"
What pedal do you used?
Wow!
wow!
Are the high strings tuned lower or higher??
Another weird tuning, ok. Such a hypnotic tune. Are you a Garden State fan?

what kind of guitars can handle this tuning. I tried tuning on my fender strat. had to get all my strings replaced
Honestly they used Jazzmasters for a reason. Different trem system from a strat which will pull out of tune with any string tension its not set up for. Jazzmasters tank any tuning switches like beasts.
Any guitar, the tuning is GABDEG, the only string that is getting tuned up is your low E, the rest of the strings are getting tuned down
What's the gauge of strings you're using?
cool shirt dude
Hey man been learning this from you im a visual learner just wondering what kind of distortion effect this is cant seem to nail the tone
An overdrive.
Thank you :)
A Proco Rat or Big muff could do wonders.
are you playing this in standard tuning?
