A lot of people says they don't ever hear the bass in metal songs, but in this case, it is the bass that makes the song more metal.
I bought a guitar with my farm work money in 1978. By the time maiden came along I was good enough to learn the rhythm guitar. I talk my little brother into getting a bass, he was 9 and I was 12. Not to brag but I learned fast, but he was like something took him over. Everyone was like look at that little kid killing the bass. He's an amazing bass player till this day. I've tried talking him into doing some RUclips vids with me but he says, I'm nothing compared to those RUclips guys. That's humility
You tell him that I had to quit. And now it’s up to him 😊

So did I, and we differ in alot of fills, but whatever we don't differ in, I learned from you. It's interesting that the fact my muscle memory plays this song in a specific way without me having an influence on it is all rooted in the fact you played the song and uploaded the video.

Bro that was nailed to perfection, I'm a guitarrist myself but always wondered how to play this tune, because in my humble opinion this song is one of harry's most acomplished compositions in basslines, congrats and keep it up, i love to play maiden's songs aswell and it tells you do also. Tone is spot on but the Style was even more so says something more for the player then the Bass. Great Job man!

Actually it's easier than it looks, music is all there. You can read a tab someone else has written, and learn someone else's mistakes (we all do, I think I've been 95% accurate, but not 100% accurate); or you can listen to the song and figure it out. I hate tabs, I think I never learned a song by tab, I've always played what I hear ^_^

@nudeadnation that's easy once you got your rhythm down! you only need to find your position on the strings, and remember to keep the volume loud, no volume means more finger fatigue on the strings!

it's like the difference between pick, slap and fingerstyle, you need no dedicated equipment, it's your hands that take out the sound of the instrument

I have the Steve Harris signature bass and I love it. I also own an American Standard P Bass which is my main bass. I put in a set of SPB-4 Steve Harris signature pickups and wow what a difference. Get them if you haven't. They are great. Happy New Year.

You are inspiring dude.....going to go put that new set of strings on the 77 Stingray and practice tonight. Heaviest bass I have ever played (solid Ashe body and rosewood neck) . Thanks for the lift....life is too short to not raise my game on that bad boy!
yeah, I like a lot to play like that myself, but the comfort you have while playing and the sound you want are two different things - to get the sound of harris you just need to spank the strings very hard, no matter what is your settings; when I play like this I can get this sound out of nearly any bass-amp combination with any moderate setting (of course not if you cut out all the highs for exmple), I mean: it's all in the hands to get this sound! :)

first part you got it, the second part is a little bit trickier, I don't remember the exact notes right now, but try listening with your eyes closed, listen 5 or 10 times to that passage alone, then turn it off and try to find the notes on your bass, they are all near 12 and 10 frets anyway :)

@GITARRDOKTORN well, nothing wrong with it, but flats are strings designed for jazz and fusion on fretless basses, steve made a great tone out of them but I don't think it fits everybody's needs, that's all - won't fit mine, anyway ^^

@revan210 yeah! we record a song for a compilation - unfortunately we had to cut it, it was a 5 minutes song but we've been told that songs longer than 3 minutes won't be put on the radio :(

@jericho667 Personally I liked it the first time, although it isn't as immediately catchy as some of their songs. And I've always loved A Matter Of Life And Death because it was the first Maiden album I bought :)
@Drokai13 sure! take it by steps. step one: listen to the song and the bass part WITHOUT PLAYING until you know it perfectly. only THEN pick up your instrument and try playing it slowly, find the notes on the neck. if necessary learn it by sections: learn the intro, then learn the verse, chorus and so on, then unite all the parts.
it's easier done than said, try all these steps and find the right ones for you. it will be easier going on!
