That lol piggie is like "HALP! SHE DOIN ME A VIOLATE!" You guys do such an amazing job with these animals. It seems like there is in general a lack of knowledge in there health and husbandry and you guys are helping to correct that
As gross as this is, its good to know if your planning on getting a guinea pig. Tbh I have no idea how I got here either but I’m kinda glad I did just in case I want a guinea pig in the future!
My teen pig HATES when he has to have his cleaned and I just repeat “Saskia says we have to.” & his brother, who is much younger and never has anything in there yet just looks on like “...what... the f*ck” Lol.
I'm very glad this video was randomly suggested to so many people, it shows how much actual maintenance small critters can be and hopefully some people will think twice before purchasing/adopting.
I fell down a hole of watching animal health care and now I’m here... yeah this is why I have female piggies. The same adorable animals with less complications lmao
Guinea pigs are social animals. Being with friends might help them be less anxious about cleaning, which is not super fun for boars but u need to do this
I have 6 rescue boys. I had no idea about this pocket until today. I'm going to check them all right now. Thank you for helping me to keep my boys happy and healthy. 😊
I grew up around farm animals so gross stuff is nothing new. It took less than 45 min to clean all 6. Only 1 had a lot in it. They all had something in there, though. By the 6th pig I had the holding technique down. Next time should go a lot faster. My oldest is 5 and he screamed at me for holding him immobile. He was mad. He gave me the worst stink eye through the whole process but was all cuddles once he was clean. They all seem happier and more calm. Maybe they were processing the trauma. It was a first for all of us. Should it be a part of the monthly health check routine?
I have learned so much from watching you Saskia! Our piggie Cupid is 1y 3m, a couple months ago he started losing fur in patches... And he had "mange" looking skin underneath... I gave him a hair cut around the affected area and gave him a good "cleaning". His ears, pocket, weenie and oil gland. I found a piece of wax in his ear that looked like the one Shrek pulled out of his ear at the dinner table for a candle!! Seriously it was huge, I was scared I was pulling out his brain! Lol jk. But i ended up putting anti-fungal and antibiotic ointment on him for several days and then stopped. After a couple days we noticed the akin was pink and black again. (He's white and black). And after a couple weeks the hair was growing back. Now you could never tell he had any ailments! Thank you for your awesome content!!!

Wow! So happy that I found this very hands on video. I recently adopted 2 bonded boys living in one of the small store bought cages. They now have a 4x2 CC cage with a loft and they are really happy and loving it. I'm trying to educate myself on all that I need to do to care properly for them. They are just now warming up to me with pets but still run from me if I try to hold them. I'm hoping we can get over that very soon so that I can bath them and also give them this check. Except for a little stripe of brown it could have been him! RIP Wilbur, I'll always love you, little friend.
Saskia, what is the purpose of the "pocket"? I've seen boars drag their junk on the ground, I assumed they were marking, leaving their scent as boy mammals do in most species. But now I wonder if they're doing it because their sack is irritating them. Will a warm sit bath help as well, just let them soak their bums for 10-15 minutes or so? I don't have boys but I think I might get one in the future.
There is no scientific answer of what the pocket is for, however I am pretty sure it has something to do with scent and marking. If it is dry and hard then a water soak will not take care of it. It is an almost gum like substance that does not dissolve in water so a generous application of olive or mineral oil will do the trick better.
@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue the more I hear about boys the less I want one, girls are so easy going and much easier to care for. They have their own issues but no stinky pockets to clean out or weenies to pull out 😬😨😉😆

Oh man i don’t think I could stand the smell for this long! I find boar cleans weirdly satisfying while also being the vilest thing ever to actually do. Plus my boys think I am torturing them so I feel bad.
I think they know. I still get paranoid about hurting them tho. Everytime i cut my peruvians hair, i show him the matted pieces. & The other one observes. I mean, theyll act annoyed but then just go back to their normal selfs. I kiss them in between my "torturing sessions" to try to calm them down. I lowkey was just thinking my long hair went off into thought like is this what my mom would do? Or nevermind then. Its what my hooman mom does 😍. Ok but i still remember you finished off my hair up there & drying me off _looks at couch 😑, back at me 😅_ , & off he goes. But yeah, i still have absolutely no clue what im doing cleaning their parts. Im trying here. Next up...
Ahhh I miss our little guy so much. He had punk rocker hair on his head so we named him spike. We never even knew we had to do this for him. Even when we took him to the vet did they ever tell us.
Thank you so much! I didn’t know that a guinea pig can have a problem like this. After watching this video I have checked my boys to see if there is a problem
@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue so i sadly had to take her back to the rescue she was blinde an i dont have full knowledge to take care of a blind guinea pig so I had to take her back and ended up getting midna a different friend i didnt want to get freda hurt the rescue said they had someone inline for her so now i have midna an moony
Years ago no body knew anything about cleaning that little pocket out.... poor little piggies! How often should you clean them and do females have the same issue??? Thank you for caring and teaching us!
I have two boys, I've only had guinea pigs for 2 years so I'm still learning so forgive me for asking a silly question but is there a way to prevent this from happening or it's something you just watch for every how long? Thank you
There are no silly questions. You want to check every 8 weeks or so. You can have it coincide with the nail clips which should also be done every 8 weeks. If your boy is prone to a lot of build up then check him a little more often.

@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue the more I hear about boys the less I want one, girls are so easy going and much easier to care for. They have their own issues but no stinky pockets to clean out or weenies to pull out 😬😨😉😆
@@mszoomy But they are adorable and have really cute personalities I only had girls for about a year after that I adopted a super cute boy and now I have 7 boys they are goofy the smell is worth it don't miss out on owning boy just because of the stinky butt.
Hey Saskia from Los Angeles, how are you&your crew??..thankyou for putting these videos out here, they are so educational & help full. Even if you are covering one subject, you cover so much more.
Thankyou so much. And thankyou for caring so much for caring for these little furry babies.sending loves&hugs, xxxx
I remember having to do this for my piggy :( I felt so bad cant believe they used to need cleanings like this. wish there was another way
Thank you for the instructions!!! Life saver.
/)(\ I cant watch! *peeks every few seconds to see if guinea pigs ok*
Lol me too haha....
Thank you so much! I didn’t know that a guinea pig can have a problem like this. After watching this video I have checked my boys to see if there is a problem
do females have the pocket? thanks saskia an out of my 2 females my freda doesnt run so much now
No girls do not, only boys
Does Freda have ouchies that prevent her from running?
@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue so i sadly had to take her back to the rescue she was blinde an i dont have full knowledge to take care of a blind guinea pig so I had to take her back and ended up getting midna a different friend i didnt want to get freda hurt the rescue said they had someone inline for her so now i have midna an moony
lmao it’s always so funny how utterly shocked they look after every cleaning
I wish I was near you Saskia
Years ago no body knew anything about cleaning that little pocket out.... poor little piggies! How often should you clean them and do females have the same issue??? Thank you for caring and teaching us!
Watch the guinea pig Whisperer in action!
Y'all I was crying my ass off with sad songs and I ended up here and my sad ass watched it till the end 😭😭😭
