Let me start by declaring an interest as the bike with the Dixis is mine.
Good video but l'd like to extract a few points from the conversations Steve and I had about the test. The Dixis are not a 10k lumens spot, they are two separate lights in one pod - a 7k spot in the outer ring and a 3k driving light in the inner ring. The full beam comparison is comparing 14k lumens from a pair of Dixi spots with 15k from the D7s so it's not really surprising the D7s appear brighter.
Steve mentioned the D7s can't be used at 20% as a driving light because they are too bright. The Dixis can, it's the entire point of the inner ring.
The Dixis are more expensive at £916 but they aren't twice the cost of the equivalent D7 kit at £595. A fairer comparison would be Dixi vs (D7 + the cost of the Denali equivalent of the Dixi inner ring).
Having said all that, the most important thing is how they appear to the rider rather than what the various manufacturer's claims are about lumens. I haven't ridden with the Denalis so I don't have a reference point.
Cards on the table, if I'd know about Steve and A Bike Thing before I bought the Dixis I would almost certainly have just taken the bike to him and asked for a couple of pairs of Denalis to be fitted - spots and driving lights - because the Denalis are good lights and that would have been a lot less hassle than bringing lights in from the US and fitting them myself. I'd also factor in that he did a great job fitting kit to my bike but let's not tell him that as he'll get a big head!

I just wanted to let you know that because of your insight I went with the Dixis. I love the dual function of the light. I put on 12K miles after I installed them 8 months ago and no problems (I bravely installed them myself). I love the easy "plug & play" and adjustability using the wonder wheel. Compared to the Denalis, the Clearwater felt and appeared more durable to me. I can say the lights probably saved my life when i used my horn/light to an unsuspecting driver trying to make a left turn in front of me. Thank you again!

I fitted the D7's to my Harley,dual powered at 50% and 100% option on a separate switch
50% on dark country roads without other road lighting more than adequate,100% perhaps too bright!
Worth the cost and superior to other options
Only criticism is the brackets recommended to fit the front forks as on your website could be better, as a single Allan Screw to adjust and fix lights at required angle,whilst adequate could be improved for robustness
Overall satisfaction is 9.5 / 10. Brackets let the score down slightly,D7's great extra for any bike!
Was out earlier on Wednesday, with a friend , he was in front riding his blackbird I flashed on my D7s for a few seconds 100% full beam , my mate in front was waving to me to switch it off as it’s so powerful, I am very impressed with these lights and the service and back up I’ve had from Steve

I’ve owned the Dixis for nearly 2 years. Recently, I notice moisture in one of the lights, they gladly reconditioned both light using a newer/better waterproofing. I’m happy with Clearwater Lights.

In the US, two Dxies will cost around $1,450. You can pick up 2 D7's, Canbus, sound bomb, Billie brake lights and all the brackets you need for around $1,300. No brainer.

Im so glad someone is finally doing this comparison and I wished you will compare all the like for like in the Clearwater and Denali ranges. I just got Ericas for my 1250 and DR1 Denalis for my Fatboy, haven't mounted them yet but will love to see like-for-like comparisons. ps- watching you made me try the DR1 Denalis. That’s why I have the amber lenses on my D4’s the non-white light is way more visible to other road users during the daylight
I agree. I like the yellow lens for daytime visibility. I also modulate them using the Cansmart 2.

You need to set your camera in manual mode, set the ISO and aperture all in manual to fix the parameters. Otherwise the camera always adapt to the enviroment light
This. Only comparison at night is how well your camera adapts to difficult lighting

I just put a pair of Super Sevinas on my 1250GSA and I couldn’t be happier with
them and your modified bracket... I rode with my buddy that has D7 and he thinks the Super Sevinas are more powerful then his D7’s I personally couldn’t see much of a difference... The thing you have to remember is the Clearwater lights come with everything you need while the Denalis you’ll need to get the cansmart separately if I’m not mistaken which makes them more comparable in price... I do agree with you about Clearwaters being a pain to setup/adjust you would think there would be a app to do it... Anyway both are the cream of the crop and you cant go wrong with either one...

I'm sure its been said. The night time camera issue is the Camera adjusting to light level mostly because you are so close to the source hitting the ground. If you do a test like this in the future, place the camera far off to the side. like near the door you walked out of.
I think you’ll be getting a lot of customers who bought D4s saying they want to swap them out for D7s! Very impressive comparison and a no brainer for the Denalis.

Lumens are only a measure of the amount of light being produced at the emitter. What you do with the light is what is important. The optics in the Denali are focusing the produced light more effectively, so look like they are producing more light.
Lux is actually a more effective measure.
Lux: The amount of light that is cast on a surface is called illuminance, which is measured in lux. This can be thought of as light intensity within a specific area.
Lumens: The total output of visible light from a light source is measured in lumens. Typically, the more lumens a light fixture provides, the brighter it is.
One lux is equal to one lumen per square meter (lux = lumens/m2). Essentially, as light travels from the emitter, it will disperse throughout an area. The further the light has to travel the more it will be dispersed. Therefore, the amount of lux in an area or on a surface can vary depending upon the distance the light travels and the angle at which it is dispersed.
Where the lumens provided by a given emitter are the same, light that travels less distance and/or is more narrowly focused will appear brighter because lux are concentrated in a smaller area than light that has traveled a greater distance and has been dispersed over a wider area.

That was a really excellent comparison of the 3 light systems, thanks. I am not sure if they are available in the UK but it would be a spectacular comparison if you could get your hands on some Baja Designs lights. I have been using BD llights for some years on my cars and they are like driving in daylight. Good comparison units from BD are the XL80s which I have a pair of on my car (along with a custom built BD light bar) and a pair of the Squadron Pro lights which I have on my 2020 R1250GS Rallye, controlled via Cansmart.
The other comment I would make (from a photographer's point of view) is that you need to use a camera with manual settings, that way you wouldn't see the light dimming as the automatic light settings take effect. You would get a more even comparison that could be adjusted to match what your eyes are seeing.
Those BD lights are huge! I think I have a customer bringing some to me soon.
I've always been a fan or manual settings and it's the auto setting I used on this video which has helped me fix the flickering frame rate issue. Please advise what manua settings I need to dial in. I've tried everything.
@@ABIKETHING Steve, as far as I know you need a slow shutter speed on your camera whilst shooting LEDs or screens on video so the shutter can catch more than one on/off cycle. It may be worth looking at NTSC settings too as well as PAL as they sometimes offer different shutter speed combinations. as far as I know the LEDs are at between 50 and 120 Hertz (on/off cycles), maybe higher and you can find by trial and error which setting avoids the flicker (you've probably already tried that!). My guess would be to try a shutter speed of 1/25th or lower (1/23 etc). The shutter being open for longer may then allow too much light through the lens so you may need ND (neutral density) filters to compensate. Apologies if this is all wrong but it's my understanding (as a photographer too) but my area is stills and not specifically video.
@@ABIKETHING the XL80s are 4.4" square, the Squadron Pro 4.1" square so they are comparable to the D7 at 4.4" round.

The behind the bike footage isn’t very convincing when the camera automatically adjusts the aperture to prevent saturation. The daytime & nighttime experiments from the “badger mound” are an easy call. I’m sold!
As someone living very close to where the Clearwaters are manufactured, I really appreciate this video. It was very interesting to note that the Clearwater can be connected to the Denali Canbus system - Steve can you please confirm that that can be done without any issues based on your experience so far?
Yes, any accessory can be connected to an ezcan
If you slow down the speed of the video then when the lights are turned on you can see the effect before the camera adjusts so just pause it then you can view a more realistic representation
I edited Denali thanks to Steve's videos and I'm very happy with the result. I use them to shoot in the Italian Dolomites. Wonderful roads that become priceless in the night.

So do you have the camera set with AUTO anything??? ISO or Aperture or Shutter? Why does it dim a little to adjust just after you turn the lights on? If that is the case this is not a fair comparison at all. Cheers Tim

Great video, but don't you think that the D7's are aimed a lot higher than the other lights in the test, the light is concentrated to the middle of the driveway whilst the D7's are to the far side of the driveway?

I haven’t but yes they can be controlled by the ezcan.

I have both gens of D4's on two bikes with Amber lenses and DR1's with one of the D4 set on my Tourer. Love them but am definitely impressed by the D7's after wtaching this.
Have just bought D2's for my small cross country bike.
Denali's cansmart is an absolute great thing to own.
4 years of regular riding on my k1600 and for some reason on a 11hour trip in 38c heat, the cansmart kicked the bucket. Emailed Denali and got a free replacement.
That is what I'm more interested in on top of lighting up the road of course.😊

Great informative video. Appreciate the effort you go to. I bought the DMs for my Africa Twin to use just as some daylight running lights. But am thinking about some D4s or 7s for night touring later. I was hoping you were going to cover the AMPLINK install and programming since I can't use CanSmart. Am looking at that with the future light purchase as I already have the B6s fitted also.

I'm holding out for the pixelated wrap-around all-bike illuminated programmable GS synthetic skin. It's the octopus not the Christmas tree that inspires me. People will look in their mirror, and if it's my mood, they will see a Sherman tank, or maybe a surfer on a 50 foot wave.

I was wondering if I could add Clearwater to the same controller and mix and match lights? Are they compatible with one another w.r.t CANbus protocol and physical connectors?

Yes you can put any light on the cansmart. You’ll need to create your own connections though.
Does the mudguard clonk the lights if you hit a bump on a tight turn?

Just a suggestion from my side, have a look at Diode dynamics SS3 Max pod lights.
The amount of light that these pods produce from such a small package is truly impressive in my opinion.
Keep aside clear waters for second, the SS3 Max pods will surely give the D7’s a hard time if you compare them side by side.

The Clearwater canbus declared +100wats output for the Dixies, how many watts output gives de Denali cansmart? I think it may fair enough to use the original Clearwater canbus system for an accurate comparison.

Hi, I have the Denali’s D4s and S4s on my 2019 1250GS attached to a CANsmart. Suddenly one of the S4s is brighter than the other S4. Any thoughts what would cause this?

TLDR; not allLumens are equal.
Measured in different ways to suit the selling of the product IMHO the bigger number is one thing but was the test done on LU per Watt, peak efficiency / per sq meters / what’s the colour light output etc etc. there’s lots of good info on buying LED home cinema projectors that explains this and the optics’s/ lenses play a huge part in how clear and far the light goes.
This is a fair point hence it's not a fair review, however from a users point of view who just wants the brightest lights and doesnt need to know the deep technical details, they just go by what they see.

Hi. I installed the d7 a few months ago. now i have the problem that the left side flickers at 30% power. but not at full power and under 30%. and the left one also flickers when I connect it to the right. What could be the reason for this?

Great comparison there, the S4 and D4 setup you did for me are mentally bright, they have now been transferred to my new 2021 GS1250 and to be honest the adaptive headlight is not really needed though is much better than before even with the S4 and D4s at 10%. My problem with the D7s is the 2mpg less fuel economy! Haha joke. Cheers.
I have the d4’s and the dr1’s great lights but one of each set have condensation or moisture build up in the lens

These lights are great but you have to be mindful of local driving regulations regarding lights. No point having eye melting lights if they are illegal to use like you'd want.

Great video. I had ClearwaterLIGHTSC on my first GSA. GOOD LIGHTS, BUT SOFTWARE WAS COMPLICATED TO USE. MUCH PREFER THE DENALIS ON MY CURRENT 1250;GSA.
The D4’s I have are good enough and not that much different to Clearwater (which look ridiculous to me). Interesting video though - well done.

The downside to the D7 is they're too powerful for low intensity day time running light. I mention in older videos that's it's a shame to point the D7 all the way into the road to avoid glare when using dipped. I think there's call for a D7+ (a bike thing edition) with a centre cluster of LEDs for dipped.

In the PH adventure bike riders casually have their Dixi's and D7's at 100% on a busy/public road hahaha.
D7's definitely the brightest lights.

Gonna get flak for this but Clearwater is the Rolex of lighting and I don't mean that in a good way. Yes it's nice but really not vastly superior to justify the cost. Like how omega or seiko produce far superior products with better function but Rolex costs exponentially more

Good job, fair enough test. The D7's are hands down brighter. What you see is what you get. Cut the scientific bs out. All just numbers. When you can read a tabloid on the fence they are the brightest. That's what you want in the Arctic in fog/rain, at the Alps in rain/snow, tunnels not for the faint hearted. Blinding bright. Quality for both seems up to par. I know the Clearwaters are top notch construction, not certain of the Denalis. I'll discuss this with a close one as she is factory rep for Clearwater.

The Dixi gives unfocused flare (like cheap traditional bulbs do). Denali have superior reflectors and lenses, and probably superior LEDs IMHO.
