My first ranger was a hunter ranger, a pest exterminator who got cursed into being a wererat (officially a swiftstride shifter) after stumbling into a rat throne room while on the job.
My second, and currently final, was a warforged horizon walker who acted as a sentry for a military base that is now abandoned and overgrown.

Sadly haven't gotten to play this one yet, but I have a Drow Swarmkeeper Ranger, whose spirits manifest as spiders and is, or at least believes she is, a favored child of Lolth. Fun fact, Favored Enemy applies to all Int checks pertaining to that creature type, including Investigation. So, by focusing on Humanoid types, she could be very good at digging up rumors and dirt on various people. With DM approval, of course.

Thanks. Thought gossamer webs would be great for all the movement options of the subclass. Plus, this social engineer/sabateur approach gives me an urban option that contrasts the typical stoic survivalist stereotype and fits in with Drow lore overall.

  • @callmeb.o.b.824
    @callmeb.o.b.824 2 года назад +12

I agree that Rangers have a lot of reflavor options. My favorite subclass for that would be the Swarmkeeper. You can easily flavor the "swarm" as many other things, my favorite would be the elements themselves. Have an Earth Genasi who's "swarm" are floating rocks around them and they follow arrows to add the extra piercing damage. Or have the ranger have a seed attached to the arrow (with the Gatgered Swarm ability), if the enemy fails their strength save, a vine erupts from the seed and connects to the ground and pulls them up to 15 ft. Also tree roots could sprout from your ranger and move them 5 ft. with the other option of Gathered Swarm to move them out of harms way. Can also invision this with water and wind and then put this flavor into your spells. If you use water, your "swarm" can spread out and seep into the earth and cause the spell Plant Growth when you channel your "swarm".
Truly enjoy your series and can't wait to see where you go next. Hope you and everyone in the community have a blessed day!

Absolutely! Love the flavors! Had a npC who was actually just a collection of lobsters all lumped together in humanoid form. Great subclass!

@@TheClericCorner that's awesome! I want to play a living marionette puppet who's a Swarmkeeper. They'd just have a floating wooden X above them (a control bar) with strings attached (creating some mystery if they are in fact acting on their own or being controlled). Also flavor all the Gatgered Swarm abilities with strings and wires as well as the special mage hand they get. Same with the Writhing Tide ability could be the floating control bar could cause them to float/fly about. Casting Pass Without Trace on the party makes more strings appear and attach to them and then everyone feels like they are being slightly controlled but are using the buff to get out of the situation. Lots of different but fun things to do with this one.

I have a Ranger idea that I've been kicking around. So far I've just multi-classed him to stay within 5e guidelines so basically he's a Fey Wanderer/Valor Bard. I call him Belissimo, "The Song Ranger" and he walks through the forest like a Disney musical. When he sings, every creature and plant within earshot must make a saving through or join in with either song, dance or improvised musical instrument. The enchantment ends when the song/dance routine is over or Belissimo moves beyond hearing and everyone who participated is happy and rejuvenated.

(Also if you're ever interested in different damage types for the conjure barrage spells I recommend getting your hands on simple poisons, holy water, vials of acid, and Alchemist fire for options of Poison Radiant Acid and Fire rather than the simple bludgeoning piercing and slashing that you'd typically have)

The last time I played a ranger it was a half-drow gloomstalker that operated on a supersoldier style of flavoring ala final fantasy 7. He was created by mindflayers as a sort of high-end militia to high-class buyers. He was one of many. His spells and tracking abilities was psychically minded, his ability to sense his enemies coming his ability to sense their minds, his insane accuracy and reflexes attributed to the modifications made to his body by these mindflayers. He spent the majority of his life believing that he was a half-drow whose mother dropped him off at a military base, until he took a leave of absence trying to find his mother and eventually found out the full truth. Spent most of the campaign asking certain drow if they knew the house symbol of the necklace his mother left him. Was pretty quiet for the most part out of shyness, but went into immediate kill-mode the second he detected an enemy, out of a sort of programming.

I actually do have a game coming up for Waterdeep. I wanted my character to work in the City of the dead, and watching this video has helped to cement my feelings and my concept. Jacob, the crystal dragonborn and former soldier who gave up his life in the army after he saw what it was turning him into. He took up work in the city of the dead to honour the fallen, and try to ease his conscious. He has a family now and has mellowed out a lot, but when he finds someone who has raised the undead, he enters that rage that made him into a killing machine when he fought, and tears them apart. Thank you for helping me to look beyond just what the class is, and ways to apply flavour.

I've made a character for a fallout game they're a ghoul cowboy (using reborn lineage as the base race because it fits ghouls extremely well) and they're a hunter ranger and I'm going to pick up the horde breaker and volley Features (because they actually work together surprisingly well) so I can fan the hammer on my revolver or quickfire my lever action rifle (also if you want to empower this phb subclass I recommend allowing them to take all the feature options from the subclass rather than having to choose one while also having these additional spells always prepared

I've also done the export/explorer build with the drakewarden who was a mix of milo from atlantis and hiccup.
Dwayne Johnson's character in jungle cruise could be a good basis for a ranger.

    Ranger Ideas:
The Freelancer: A true Jack of All Trades. They learn skills from the party members and non-player characters. Everything from weapon use to spell casting to skill usage. For this build, I am throwing in two levels of Bard just for the Jack of All Trades feature (nothing else). Then Ranger for the rest of the way. They learn stuff from everybody. For subclass, I am going for Hunter. Honestly, any subclass is fine.
The Inverse Beast Master: You are a beast who raised a humanoid. This humanoid is your pet who you have trained to fight like you. Perhaps you are an ape who trained a Tarzan-esque individual to fight like you. This requires custom lineage.
The Siren: Yep a Fey Wonderer Ranger whose enticing voice can mess with the heads of their foes. Custom lineage required.
The Swarm: So Swarmkeeper Ranger however you do not summon a swarm. You are the swarm. Pick any kind of swarm. This could be spiders, insects, rats, etc. Another custom lineage.
The Telekinetic: Like Swarmkeeper but instead of having a swarm, you are just a telekinetic person moving objects with your mind. As you use your "swarm" like abilities a corona of magical energy surrounds you. This could be psionics. All of your Ranger spells are also just psionics or some other magical effect. Replace all the nature flavoring with psionics and voila. Also, grab Telekinetic feat.

This is a fantastic and creative video for rangers I love it, a little while ago I was trying to homebrew rangers and someone challenged me on pretty much the topic of this video and how ranger players are all the same so I wrote this out to help show the variation in rangers you could easily achieve …
Also man I can think of tonnes of dnd rangers in media from Aragorn to faramir, geralt of rivia, van helsing , the mandalorian, Trevor Belmont, hector from the tangled cartoon with the two honey badger and a rhino, or every ranger in the rangers apprentice series, or what about the og Robin Hood, people say he’s just a longbow fighter but the dude lives out in the wilderness for years, that and most else about him screams ranger, hagrid with his many magical pets, knowledge of the forbidden forest and crossbow skills Is a prime ranger, kraven the hunter who has hunted every known beast and turned to heroes, he uses all manner of traps clothing based on the beasts he killed and many more weapons taken from those he’s hunted
Rangers can be many things to ...
Professional monster hunters (Geralt/ Belmont/ Hellsing)
Bounty hunters (mando)- hunting specific targets in the world
Outlaws (Robin Hood) - looking out for your own survival
Knights (faramir, tangled guy, halt) -serving your kingdom behind enemy lines or a specific area of said kingdom
Druids chosen warrior - going out on a mission of spiritual importance
The village hunter - collecting food and protecting your settlement
Cowboys/sheriffs- protection of livestock and keeping the law in small obscure villages

I guess I mentioned this one already... A horizon walker who originated from who knows where (her world is under the dying sun, it's infested with random unstable portals to various bad places for most cases, and it's more technogenic; but is it another planet, another plane, future - who knows) and appeared in a game world through the portal, gaining most her magic powers in that act. I assumed she was a researcher in her world, but it ended up working better with her being in the military. And she also randomly was a drow (from a more dwarf-style society); also way too young for an adult elf in the game world, but I haven't really done anything with this one.

I know they aren't primary spellcasters but having a few Cantrips up their sleeves can help them thematically. Druid Cantrips such as Druidcraft, Guidance, and Resistance make sense for the warriors of the wilderness.

I love all of these are really great too bad they're already handled by other classes. These are my opinions and they could be wrong. But this is how I feel after watching your video.
The Clairvoyant is an Arcane trickster that focuses on divination
Crossroads is a grave domain Cleric with a twist.
The Sentinel is as you say a horizon Walker Ranger.
Eldritch Tamer it's a very unique Drake Warden, and requires a lot more DM approval then almost any other subclass.
The expert Ranger is basically a Lore bard. Based on how you describe the class. It seems like Bard would be a better fit for that.
The Explorer Ranger is quite literally just the archaeologist Rogue that no one uses.
The Watchman current sounds pretty fun even if it's basically just a Town guard in theme.
The seat Ranger while stonespine requires a very very Niche campaign. I would love to play one but that sounds more like an artificer or a fighter. It's possible that used but it get used just as much as phb Ranger.
Zen Ranger sounds interesting may need a decent amount of work to put together but probably will be liked by a few. We finally get access to psychic damage, nice.
