- Exploring the world of foddian rage games and the effects of stretching the limits of game difficulty.
The games I play in this video:
Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy
Jump King
Pogostuck: Rage With Your Friends
/ ghostiimit
The only rage game I've played so far is Getting Over It. What made it worthwhile to me is the insight it gives into one's inner workings. It's like the core mechanic is not the movement of the character but the conscious anticipation, detection and management of emotions like stress, anxiety or anger. To me, those appeared to affect my performance much more than the mechanical skill. I love games that manage to pull of feats like that, which are not possible in any other medium.
I was going to suggest that perhaps the internet game QWOP could have been an early example of deliberately awkward controls with the intent to frustrate and annoy the players, and possibly an inspiration to this genre of games... before I discovered that QWOP was actually made by Bennett Foddy himself!
Getting over it is one of my favorite games and has been a calming experience for me for years now.
My first run was definitely difficult (and frustrating at times) but it didn't take that much time in the end and now i revisit it from time to time for a leisurely stroll to the top. Once you have a handle on the control, the music and narration is very nice.
You're also rewarded tons for going fast as you can outright skip many difficult sections... Though it definitely doesn't make it easier, only faster
I love how consistent Your content is, it's either exceptional or extraordinarily great. Keep up the good work (:
Before this video, while still having an appreciation for these type of games, i generally just viewed them as games that were made for the sake of difficulty and how much tou can stretch it while staying fair,
But hearing you talking about this made me rethink a bit about their true purpose and the vision the devs had while making these.
Im definitely going to give jump king a chance in the future(hopefully i dont regret this 😅)
I personally play foddian game so find the gaming experience i had as a kid, not knowing how to play game and have to learn the control to play it. Most game use the same control formula and it get boring after a while so picking a game up, and sucking at it is refreshing and nostalgic in a way
Thank you for such a thorough exploration of these types if games :)
underrated content
I am a madman that beat getting over it 50 times and personally I really enjoyed the experience. Other than that I haven't really played any other rage games, but they can be super fun once you get the controls down.
i swear this is the first time i have seen your latest upload and your sub count has not doubled
Do y'all think that if you purchase a game, there is an expectation that you'll reasonably be able to beat it?
I think most people would say that while celeste is a hard game, it's not unreasonable by any means. If you just do the main story it's not too bad. 38.3 percent of people beat it.
But if the credits were moved to after chapter 9, the post game chapter after all of the B sides and secrets, only 8% of people have beaten that.
Which is actually similar to the percentage of people who beat Getting Over It
Many many people call getting over it unreasonable and even unethically hard! They say it's an accessibility issue. But people don't complain about celeste, even though it contains the same difficulty. The only real difference is where it's considered "done"
Idk! I think we put too much stock in finishing games
The best content I've ever seen!
Really good content
I love your videos!!!
I love your videos bro
good stuff
I played Cat Mario I think it was released way earlier that getting over it
Came to write this
Foddian games are skill based. Cat Mario is bullshit.
cat mario is a troll game, with thing actually trying to kill you, with different checkpoints (level) it is not comparable
jump king sucks for technical rasons but I legitimately find getting over it fun to play c:
