  • So I'll be jumping into heat treating some 1095 Steel here soon, and this video is going to cover my new forge- the Cast Master Elite CMF 3000 Triple Burner Forge, and the insulation process I used to hopefully get it to the heat treating temperatures for 1095 Steel!
This is quite a long video- covering step by step while I make the Rigidizer and Rigidize the Kaowool Ceramic Fiber Blanket, then coat with a few pounds of Refractory Satanite Mortar, and top that off with ITC-100 HT High Temperature Ceramic Coating.
This was pretty fun to do, again I'm new at this- by all means there are many ways to do these steps and I am just going off the information I've gathered from may sources of people that have built/modified their own forges :)

Know this was posted awhile ago, but man this seriously helped me out! Having used pre-setup forge prior, this was new experience for me!

The satanite changes size a LOT when it gets hot; don't worry about the small cracks during setup, you'll get a lot more during normal operation. Also, the thicker you put on the satanite, the faster and greater the cracking happens (i.e. more layers will make the cracking worse). Both the ceramic blanket and refractory are consumables, expect to replace them every couple years no matter how careful you are with your forge!

Thanks so much for the input! Finally got it dialed in and heat treated the chopper challenge cleaver a few nights ago... and you're right a few more slight cracks happened after the heat treat. But I'm so excited to keep using it, roars like a champ!

is this forge capable of forge welding mild steel? I'm trying to make some folded axes but the beginner forge i currently have wont get hot enough
