14:08 - the panning difference here is quite striking. The Z6 sample looks much more eye-natural; whereas the A7iii feels more like that pan-blur that I've always hated about the longtime 24fps standard of the movie industry (though the origin of the A7iii's jittery pan here is probably more complicated than just shutter time or fps).
I seriously do not understand why people care about iso higher than 3200 or ok 6400. Do u ever shoot with this high ISO? I do not. 45% higher bitrate and external 10bit and raw recording is way more stronger advantage on the Nikon side. So Sony a7iii is an outsider in this comparison. Focus works almost the same after latest firmware updates+ a bit better ibis. I seriously don't understand people who are considering Sony a7iii now. The only valuable argument towards Sony for me if a person is already addicted to Sony system, has plenty of lenses, accessories and works more with photography. Otherwise Nikon z6 is an absolute winner.
Why? On DXOMark sensor ratings, both cameras receive the same score with the A7iii only getting around 1/3 of a stop better high ISO performance. If I were buying today, I’d definitely choose the Z6 for the handling, simpler menus and better price, since you can buy a new Z6 with 24-70 f4 for the price of a new A7iii body only. That’s a no brainer.
Different lens filters might help, to slightly blur the video, and then try to use different lighting. I'm seeing that fast lenses do not look good for cinematic look, because it's not natural to have the background heavily blurred. The whole point of 24p is to have the background blur when there is motion, and then to come back into focus when there is no movement, which is how our eye naturally sees things. Fast lenses with large apertures ruin people's footage, because the objects in the foreground that are in focus jump out too strong, and are too sharp, and it doesn't look cinematic. Try a small higher aperture setting than you would, so the background is in focus, and try a little less focus on the subject.
WOW. This further confirms my decision to purchase a Nikon Z6ii. The Z6ii might have the best firmware settings of anything in its class. This has not been talked about enough on reviews! Thank you so much for showing the firmware settings! The ability to slow the focus speed down, is critical for natural looking footage.
Thank you Mathieu! Finally, a balanced comparison with real world examples. I particularly appreciate your willingness to go through all of the mode settings and do the color grading examples. Really nice work!

Nice thorough review. But I feel the coverage on log formats was inconsistent with my, and widely reported, experience. Log codecs effectively only use around half the numerical range for coding luminosity, meaning that they record less information. Granted, they compress the range of real world brightness by taking a log value thereof, but while this gives reach at the extremes, it does not mean more information. It actually means less. Hence that dogged "banding" issue in so much graded log footage. In practice, as implemented, the brightness simply never spans more than ~50% of the available range. I've done plenty of controlled tests, and shot numerous projects using log footage, and found that grading it to a pleasing end result is extremely hit-or-miss. Yours here is some of the least messed-up graded log footage I've seen, but I note it was of scrub vegetation in bright sunlight. Actors on a dark stage would be another thing. Sony's hybrid log option (e.g., PP10 on the A7iii), which you skipped over with only a name-only mention, goes a fair distance to fixing that. But even so, I've even given up on even hybrid log, and moved to straight up linear formats for recording.
Great review. I have possiblity to buy new Nikon Z6 body for 1230 eur. But still thinking about the A7 iii because better Eye AF, which i can get for 1500 €. Would you rather choose Z6 or A7 iii ? Is there big difference between Z6 Eye AF and A73's? I have now Nikon D90. Thank you.
I find the Sony Eye AF better overall, but Nikon has made various improvements via firmware so it's not too far behind. Also consider the lenses. Right now there is more choice of native lenses with Sony, for every budget needs, unless you'd consider adapting Nikkor F lenses on the Z6.
I was expecting to see a test where Z6 4:2:2 would matter. Did not see any graduated colour changes. Also highlight recovery of 10bit vs 8bit would have been nice (shoot flat & to the right). I have seen a more detailed video on eye-AF, which looks to me to be more useful for portraits then general video. What I like about the Z6 was touchscreen AF, that's generally useful. Sony had very fast AF, and looks better at motion tracking. I kept noticing Sony colour science was on the orange side, and Nikon on the red. I like red more than orange. However human eye is more discerning with luminance than chrominance, which suggests the high ISO low noise performance of the Sony is more important. For video these cameras are very close. I still want to see some 10bit vs 8bit tests like I mentioned first.
Cool video and I've leaned a lot watching this video, specially as a beginner. I'm planning on getting a nice camera. If possible could you do a review of the Nikon Z6 vs the Fuji XT4? Between the Nikon Z6 or Fuji XT4 I might go with. I was thinking of the Sony A7iii to. Peace and love
Young Freddy Mercury really knows what he's doing here. Great stuff. I'm a Nikon fan myself and as soon as mine dies (around 2040) I will make the leap to the Z.
Both are strong cameras for sure. It seems if you want you camera to more closely mimic the fully auto settings of your cell phone camera, the Sony has the edge, especially in the color and HDR department. But I think very few people would buy either camera for their ability to be mostly automatic in operation, or to actually "print" those 'in camera' color choices. This would totally defeat the purpose of editing in post where you have vastly more perspective and control over the image. It would be extremely difficult to make those kind of color decisions under the pressure of real world filming, without a high Rez onsite monitor, The Nikon seems to be clearly aimed at the cinematographer/filmmaker with higher quality output via HDMI and flatter profiles intended for editing after the fact. This is especially true if your shooting in HD where the image/detail of the Nikon is clearly better overall. The Nikon's 10bit output in 4k is the clear winner here for any serious film work. Once that changes to RAW output here in the near future, there will be no further comparison. Both cameras use very similar sensors so it really is the total package/details/ handling that tips the scales.
It’s important to mention the lenses used. Going with Nikon has a huge advantage is the ability to use a ton of different lenses, most of whom have really excellent color. Using the sigma art lenses might make for a more neutral comparison, but it hobbles a lot of the Nikon’s advantages.
You can use a lot of different lenses with the Sony too. Plus let's be honest, if I had used Nikon lenses, I'm sure somebody else would have found something to say about that. Take this tests as they are: they show you the main differences you need to know. From there, you choose the one you like best and the rest of the work is up to you ;-)

What you are really buying into is the ecosystem, aka mount. The comparison is not even close when this is taken into account. Sony has a plethora of lenses whereas Nikon is getting lost in their own pointless apsc camera rather than making sure the Z cameras are getting a sensible lense selection.
8:02 what's with the color shift in couch and curtains in this side-by-side (also seen in log comparison later)? Based on your log profile color correction a minute later it seems the Nikon is less faithfully reproducing shadow colors?
At 8:02 I'm using the Flat profile on the Z6 and PP10 on the A7 III, without any correction in post. So the difference in the shadow areas is just the difference between the two cameras in terms of colour reproduction, with the Sony having more red/magenta and the Nikon more green.
I was going to post a troll comment saying that this is a 4K comparison uploaded in 1080p. Then I realised this was I was a fucking idiot because it was upped in 4k. FML
True my friend, but nowadays you need 40 MP, take a shot, and zoom in to the sub atomic level cause otherwise you don't count anymore. Sony a7 iii lowlight beast 12:28
11:52 That's Turin in the background!
ok
Ciampornio! Agnulott! Cicles!
Thank you very much..☺️☺️
very very nice ..video ... sir... wow.........sony photo video .. best ... nikon photo best
skin colour on Z6 is superior than sony, but ... cannot beat fuji XH1
@6:53 Am i the only one who noticed his beard isnt centered?
Great job! Thank you!
I think , Nikon performs better . This is my personel opinion only
z6 NR high looks just as soft as the a73 raw at high iso
Great stuff
So why do Sony filmers cry for a new A7s? I mean look at both of them in the High ISO test, these are both low light beasts!
My choice is z6
The Sony looks better
In terms of design
Great job!
Thank you
What you are really buying into is the ecosystem, aka mount. The comparison is not even close when this is taken into account. Sony has a plethora of lenses whereas Nikon is getting lost in their own pointless apsc camera rather than making sure the Z cameras are getting a sensible lense selection.
Sony doesn't have native lenses when they started they were the "king of adapted lenses". Nikon now have 8-9 glasses in a span of 1 year.
Thank You!!
they are basically the same camera, at least thats what i tell myself as a z6 owner
I was going to post a troll comment saying that this is a 4K comparison uploaded in 1080p. Then I realised this was I was a fucking idiot because it was upped in 4k. FML
I don't think I would notice much unless I zoomed in much more
True my friend, but nowadays you need 40 MP, take a shot, and zoom in to the sub atomic level cause otherwise you don't count anymore.
You need IBIS, LOG, 4K Video , Double Card Slots, 10 Bit, Backlight Sensor, Eye Auto Focus, etc. and it doesn't care if you make lousy shots, you got the gear, and that is important !
Welcome in 2019.
Sony A7III skin tone test clearly show a green spike on skin tones.
Sony shows less noise, but loose in details significantly.
