Probably my favorite FPL podcast… ever? 🦖 Thank you Ross & Simon!! I’d love to hear more conversations like this one from you both. I think one of the biggest lessons that’s helped me in FPL the past few seasons is ignoring the social media bandwagons. I try to make my own decisions and if they align with the community’s chosen player of the week then okay, but otherwise I avoid (easier said than done but that’s the goal anyways).
Had to pause halfway through and leave a comment about how amazing this episode is! Honestly, I wouldn't mind another 2 episodes in a row just for both of you to go on about all these theories that goes beyond FPL
Hey Raptor, Firstly, setup is insanely good! I have tuned in for the episodes so far but never really listened to them for more than 15 - 20 mins. But this episode was really good. Maybe personally felt that way because of my psych and investing background mingled with being an FPL and football enthusiast. Great work and would love to have him on the show again! Keep it up my guy!
Love the pod. Genuinely one of my favourite listens because it combines two of my favourite topics. Scored 39 points this week on the back of a 90 pointer the week before. Have to take the rough with the smooth and not panic when things don’t go your way.
Absolutely AMAZING episode. One of the best pieces of FPL content... ever? Incredible. The two of you have great chemistry, you should really become a regular duo.
I was 9th in the world, played by going my own way, backing teams rather than players and looking for the value. I felt great, but learnt I was way too gun ho, too many hits. I am getting more hooked every year. I have learnt not to take it too seriously, and to enjoy it. I play with my son, and I am hoping it teaches him, patience and informed choices. Its a game for life, about life.
Probably my favorite podcast of the season. Love love love the method to the madness type FPL talks where you get people on that talk about their process when it comes to how they play.
This pod is top notch. I also have a psychology qualification (also in statistics) and these biases definitely exist however, for some of the player examples given I think randomness is a better explanation of what happens. There is always a low, but not zero probability that someone can score 20 goals from 21 shots. It happens. No need to search for the reason about the double pivot later to fit the story. This feels like over fitting to me. Footballers outputs do tend to follow certain statistical distributions and this is massively overlooked.
Super interesting and a very rewarding listen, this! Given xG is acknowledged as a fairly accurate estimate for the goals a player should get, many expect xG to even out over the season (as in there will be variance but in the end it will likely be fairly accurate). If that’s the case then it would be correct to think that a player who’s so far massively underperformed their xG would henceforth over-perform their xG, i.e. believing they are due goals. Because otherwise it wouldn’t even out over the season and thus by extension wouldn’t be a good statistic for estimating returns either. And we know that xG typically is just that! I feel like it’s difficult to wrap your head around such seemingly contradicting statements regarding points predictions and biases. Doesn’t make sense initially hearing that “This player has great underlaying data, so he’s a great transfer in even though he hasn’t been returning. But no, he’s not due any returns.” haha ^^ But yes it’s about _WHY_ we can expect them to do well. It’s not because they haven’t returned yet, but because they have continuously good numbers. Just exemplify it with two players, one with say 5.0 xG and no goals and one with 0.02 xG and no goals. You probably wouldn’t be considering both of those players to be “due a goal” right ; ) But also it’s important to emphasise that just like with points, we shouldn’t chase xGi. By which I mean that the accumulated xGi in previous games is no longer there to claim even if the player hasn’t had a single return so far. You shouldn’t expect them to get huge hauls because they’ve had loads of xGi but no returns, you should however expect them to return similarly to their average xGi!
100% the best FPL content being produced. The best way I could describe it is where most content feels as though it limits your choices to a set of players of their choosing, the podcast equips managers with the skills required to be more confident in playing their own game. You bring on an assortment of managers from every corner to show the wide variety of styles that all have been capable of finding success. Whilst there are still players obviously being discussed, it feels more like case studies as examples of how to examine players. The numbers on the content are all earned but I guarantee you the positive influence each upload makes is the highest on this site.
This video covered some foundational concepts really well and was very enjoyable to watch. Hoping you guys can explore some more complex ideas like the order of information and the framing effect to add an extra layer of insight for those looking to expand their understanding a bit more. So good it's worth watching twice! I won Sun Dream Team 2006, so know what Simon was going through to a larger extent in it being life changing (due to the 6 figure prize sum) but to a lesser extent transfer wise (only 2 transfer windows). It is still incredibly nerve wracking, even when you can't do anything about it. But more importantly, life itself is still more important than fantasy football, so take those mental health breaks if needed.
Thanks FPL Raptor and Simon for this brilliant piece of FPL psyco science! Just subscribed. I reckon this year's WC6 would be a great example of FPL content providers advocate sale of Salah to fund purchase of Diaz, ARS/LIV defenders (into upcoming difficult fixtures) based on the "law of small numbers" from GW1-5 LOL (after Raya/Gabriel's "revert to the mean" in GW6 & 7, now the cognitive bias is to sell (previous long-term hold) Trent to get Palmer into Chelsea's GW8-11 fixtures). Going against the herd mentality makes this year's FPL particularly fun; will see whether the gravitational Central Limit Theorem will again revert Palmer to the mean LOL
Brilliant podcast, my favourite of the channel so far! FPL has a really interesting link with psychology and its a great topic that isn't talked about much.
49:44 This is something a lot of people will know from A level statistics, hypothesis testing, if over a set sample size of independent events with a supposed probability of something happening, if the unlikely thing happens a certain number of times it’s considered to be enough evidence to suggest that the initial estimate of probability is incorrect, and thus why people suddenly feel like they have to change and ‘give up’ on a player. If we expect Isak to average a goal every 2 games, so a 0.5 chance of scoring every week, if he goes 5 weeks without scoring the probability of that happening if the original estimation was correct is only 3.125%, which is low enough to suggest that he simply isn’t expected to score 1 in every 2 games anymore. In reality the stats were telling us he was expected smthng like 0.9 returns per game and we very quickly saw that the chances of that still being the case this season were very low and made a lot of us jump off him very early
My rudimentary take is that each season starts fresh, stats from past seasons do not always carry over directly. Therefore the eye test works better at the start. But as the season progresses, the stats become more reliable and that is why long term I believe stats will trump, particularly when law of averages comes into play. Either way you should take into account all variables but the stats has heavier weighting towards the end

Great episode mate. Really enjoyed the analysis of decision making in relation to fpl! I'm used to starting slowly and end up flying towards the middle and end of the season. Badly timed my moves so far and probably let some fomo dictate those decisions (moving off players I wasn't going to), so I'm going to use this international break as a refresh and make sure I stand back and really evaluate and believe in my decisions before going with them going forward!
This was truly enjoyable & gave me great food for thought... I play with a ' Jack Canfield ' mindset ..Everything you want & need is on the other side of fear ..So, no Haaland & not jumping on the Palmer train is easier for me..If I have acceptence on what could happen & I am prepared for it fear doesn't raise it's head . It is just a choice. However, when the pack have to accept him blanking, the ( herd or pack ) mentality react with a false negative that it won't happen again. I'd like to suggest another cheeky bias, which is learning about biases can lead you to completely distrust your gut feeling, but there's a lot of power sometimes in just "I had a feeling" when you can't rationalise, justify or quantify that feeling, but you still do. Grab a beer and stick a captain on your gut feeling, it might be your best weekend.
Ha, action bias. You should see me when I have to go to the gym, definitely no action bias. Jokes (not really) aside, this is fantastic, I have never seen so many biases explained so understandable.

Yeah but I actually don’t have any biases so…
Really enjoy this content as a recent Psychology graduate and FPL fan, more would be great
beautiful subject to talk about mr raptor, nicely done :D
This was such an interesting listen. Thank you!
Would love more of these types of pods - reviewing your own decision making through these lenses
Easily the best fpl content I’ve ever consumed!! Fantastic vid!
Thank you so much!
Great podcast I need to listen to this over and over again because FPL is driving me INSANE. YOUR ADVICE NEED TO BE INGRAINED IN MY SOUL.
Hahahaha thanks mate, you’ve got this!
Hi Ross, Brilliant episode (my favourite & the previous episodes have been excellent). Kudos to Simon & you - great to hear thoughts from 2 very good experts - I ❤ Behavioural Science for FPL - there's a sentence I never imagined imagined writing 😂)
Thanks so much Dave! Appreciate you!
What a pod Ross, I really don’t understand the hate you get. This is world class content for all FPL managers WOW. 🐐
Thank you very much mate 🙏🏼
Thanks guys, excellent content!
Can't express how much I needed this therapy this week. Dropped 1.4m in rank down to 4.5m and wasn't feeling great about it. Love the psychology aspects
You will bounce back mate, you've got this!
@@FPLTherapy thanks Ross, keep up the good work 👍
Great episode, cheers!
I learnt so many types of biases and fallacies. FPL should fear my return fr. Going for number 1
Man a weekly show with you two talking about yur results, plans and trends would be incredible! Best episode of Therapy so far for me!
Thanks so much mate, FPL Therapy living up to it's name hopefully!
Let’s talk Fpl 👀
😂Andy is special.
This was brilliant and insighful👍
Keep them coming, Ross.
Great stuff guys! Really makes me think the way I play FPL :/
Super interesting, would love a part 2 follow up in the second half of the season! 👏🏼
Great episode mate!
Best fpl video and the one everyone needs
really good and interesting pod
Fantastic and has certainly helped me better understand myself & why I’ve made some at times rash decisions in recent weeks after a tough game week. Superb 👌
Glad it helped!
Two of my favorite topics. FPL and psychology. Excellent 👌🏻
Thanks mate, hope you enjoy(ed)!
Haven't seen much FPL Therapy so far, but this is really great content and fascinating stuff!

Love this podcast ! The different content was surprising and refreshing. :)
That’s brilliant to hear!
WOWWWWW!!!! Raptor isn’t usually my cup of tea, but this episode was probably the greatest piece of FPL content I’ve personally viewed.
I’ll give Raptor another chance. Thank you for this video. I’m saving it to watch more than once
I’m glad you enjoyed the podcast, and thanks for giving me another chance! The content on this podcast is slightly different to my main channel so maybe this will be more your taste!
What an insane podcast. Above and beyond like always
Thanks so much mate!
Cheers for the different type of podcast Ross! Really good insight into the psychology of the game, enjoyed with a cuppa as usual 😃
You’re very welcome! 🙌🏼
2 minutes in and I knew this was going to be amazing - over an hour later and absolutely was right. Great content guys. Loved that 🙂
Love to hear it, thanks Peter!
This is class.
I'm watching this at 3:00am my time and I've got to stop at 25 mins so I can listen to the rest as I drive to work in about 4 hours.
Already a great piece though.
Thank you, Ross.
Hahaha I hope you got enough sleep! Thanks mate
Amazing! Please do another one at the START of the season though! It is great advice.
Great idea!
The best pod as usual 🎉🎉🎉
Ha, action bias. You should see me when I have to go to the gym, definitely no action bias. Jokes (not really) aside, this is fantastic, I have never seen so many biases explained so understandable.
Risk becomes less stressful when people have two teams. I know some players have an A team and B team. To each their own, though.
One of the best videos I watched ever!
Thank you so much!
You guys smashed it Ross, loved this
Thanks mate, really appreciate that!
Loved this episode! 😃
Thanks!
That was top notch
Amazing episode, great insight 🙌

Thanksgorithm mate! Loves when you blend FPL with behaviour and psychology
My pleasure! Thanks for being here as always!
actually bookmarking this episode to remind me of FOMO situations like Diaz, on my WC, while I didn't want to bring him in the first place! Thanks for the content
Had you done this video at the start of the season I would’ve been at least 30 points better off by now lol great work Raptor and Simon!
Hahaha thanks mate, hopefully helps you for the next 31 gameweeks!
