I recall a time while attending university when it was welcoming to attend lectures by orators with differing points of view. It helped strengthen one’s belief system and rarely changed it.
So it had the opposite effect that it should've. Not sure you quite get the point of arguing different pov. It's to open your mind to more possibilities, not to make you doggedly cling to 'beliefs' instead of facts. Dialect vs debate. One is for better, the other is worse. If the latter is what you focused on, trying to win an argument on some silly merit instead of finding the truth in a situation through a meaningful discussion, then you did it wrong and it's no wonder the world is in the state it's in.
Best part about it was "People bring their twitter persona to real life" and yeah... remember people "Congress shall make no law..." a school telling you not to scream and chant when a speaker is talking isn't violating your right to free speech.
I would always want to know what people think and want and the only way to really know that is via free speech. I want to know who is hateful or wants Marxist agendas in government. I want to know what people really think about other people. Silent people never reveal their true intentions. It’s better to know who the threat is. Or know who believes in our Constitution and Bill of Rights. Good and bad can only be known when everyone can freely express themselves. Social media has become the primary source of information for our society. They have taken advantage of this and are currently silencing people who express different opinions. If a company wants to operate in our nation’s borders then they need to respect our Constitution. Social media took advantage of us and pushed it to an illegal level when they worked with federal agencies to suppress free speech. Both the government and the media are in violation of our 1st Amendment. They need to be sanctioned.
The media is not required to uphold your free speech. The government is. These corporations are private entities who can disassociate themselves from people they believe will hurt their profits.
Another wonderful quote: "If you accept restrictions on free speech for any reason it means that you did not have an education. You had an indoctrination."
My Mee-maw used to wax profoundly from time to time. (We haven't heard from her since she died.) One of my favorites applies to the arrogance of the populace today. She'd wag her finger at obvious puffery and say, "Don't get so full of yerself that there's no room for the Holy Ghost."
Oh my god the number of times I push back on certainty. People are certain of the most bizarre and unknowable things and will defend it to the end for no reason and with no basis. It's amazing.
Left or right, if someone says they're offended, I always replace that in my head with "I can't defeat your logic and I'm angry that you won't believe me without evidence".
The whole dang country has things all twisted up. Oh I could go into a rant about so many things that people have doubts standards about what someone one else did, buy they see nothing wrong with anything they do themselves. The list is too long to even get started on, because then if you stand up for your rights, which happens to be what the country was based upon, then your pounded into the ground and called prejudice and worse. Yet those who are the guilty of prejudice is the ones pounding everyone else saying they are the ones. It's maddening beyond words that things have gotten to the point that it has, and it's only going to get far worse long before it ever gets close to being better for everyone
So, this situation sounds like they need to revise their rules for meetings and order at Stanford. If you want it to be a socratic discussion so that you can learn from a speaker, then use rules of order that govern that intent. If you want an open meeting then inform the guest that it is an open meeting. Sounds to me like Stanford's event organizers really dropped the ball here.
Ketanji Brown Jackson SCOTUS, the woman who couldn't define woman because she wasn't a biologist; just said that she's worried about citizens hamstringing government with the 1st Amendment. Wow... just wow. I need my safespace!
I remember when the debating teams prepared for war, duked it out in the prescribed manner, took no prisoners and arguments were judged. Then victors and vanquished retired to the bar and celebrated the competition of debate. And basically obliterated themselves for the evening.
The preamble to the Bill of Rights states clearly that the intention of the BoR was to keep the government from "Misconstruction or abuse of authority." Any compromise to the BoR is allowing them to do just that.
Masterpiece Theater - World On Fire....history always repeats itself as German Cancellor Otto von Bismark famously said, "what we learn from history, is that no one learns from history."
Freedom of speech means we have already preaccepted *_ANY_* reaction to our own action, and that alone is needed in order for us to pick our battles. It's so important to own our actions and the more we do that, the more we will make sure we are doing something right because we have to care if we are to stand up for something. We need less safespaces because or else the younger one's will never know how to take a kick to the teeth and get back up again. This safespace mindset only creates weak people, and weak is a choice. This is why the only choice available should be to fight and do something for oneself, because that's the only thing that will make your life better. Safespaces are made so that people should give up, which to me is tragic.
Not everyone is equipped to fight. And they shouldn’t have to. I’d say what kind of people are we raising that someone would need to fight to live? I grew up getting bullied and made fun of. Maybe it made me tougher. I don’t know. But it definitely hurt my self confidence. I was always told to stand up and defend myself. But it would have been a lot nicer if I never had to in the first place. So I treat people with respect. When I see we disagree on something I just accept that. I feel these days the people who are most often offended are the ones who claim everyone is too easily offended and they cry about wokism. It has to be tiring. Society changes. It always has. The young people now will be out of touch when they get old.
@@NandR Standing up for ourself is a choice, and if we got a pulse we have choices. You need to understand that you are right here and now telling yourself that you should not stand up for yourself and that you should not have to. That is the choice you are making. Before you say anything I can tell you that I've been bullied shitloads myself in my childhood, and even my nanny tried to kill me when I was 5 years old. My past wasn't all fun and games, and none of that can tell me what I should or should not do in my future - I will. I am the owner of me which means I decide whether I turn left or right in the next intersection. Never underestimate the power of thought and the power of choice.
What the heck ever happened to we agree to disagree on some subjects? To letting a person present their opinion then being able to give a rebuttal to their statement.
"Shouting down" someone is a huge indicator you might be wrong. If you don't like what someone says let them say it and if they are wrong they will destroy themselves. All things considered.
I am an old guy and I just can’t even believe how bad this has gotten. When I was working I lived in a predominantly conservative work force. We had a good friend who lovingly named our “token liberal”. We had many many conversations debating ideas. It was good for me at a relatively young age to learn our basic foundations were the same even if our ideas on getting things done were different. I don’t think young people now would even associate with non similar thinking people. They consider them enemies. What a terrible place we have made for ourselves.
The internet has become the ambulance in the saying; "A Lawyer chasing an ambulance." In some states it looks like that is illegal. I think the term is barratry.
Free speech & other rights, once widely enjoyed in most 1st world countries has been steadily & subtly taken from us for decades. It was carefully orchestrated by people with a much larger agenda. Defectors from the USSR warned that communist ideology & division is being sown in schools & universities throughout the world. That was in the 80s! Society is in trouble. On a side note, if law students dont learn to debate & listen to things they find unpleasant in the classroom how do they expect to do their job in the courtroom. The ability to calmly debate is paramount to success in the courtroom. Without a radical shift in power our society as we know it is done. Read the gulag Archipelago. That is our future on this current trajectory.
Even though the contents of the opinion imposed used to different in other eras, America was never known for its great ideological tolerance, compared to older culture countries. In general, having a too divergent or conspicuous opinion or debating too much was seen as the sign you had no real job or no real business of your own.
Basic communications: Speaking and listening. Old and retired, it just seems who talks the fastest and /or the loudest, wins. So, where is the dialog to understanding. My nightmare is having been the boss, and asking a group of supervisors for feedback about what worked or what did not work in a project, and getting dead silence!
Great guest. It would be great if Mike hosted Chris Rufo and or James Lindsay on to discuss these issues. Seeing that one was a former liberal and the other grew up in a devout communist family and ended up leaving to inform others. Both have made the same claim that within the Communist circles it's been a bragged about claim that they've taken over a vast amount of colleges since 1992. After being involved in politics and culture since 2000. I believe what we are witnessing is pretty much the same thing that happened in Mao's China in 1949 with the cultural revolution. In the US there's been a misconception that the Right has all the power but actually most that are informed are aware that the Left has control of the majority of institutions. Colleges, Media, Non Profits, BIg Business. In light of that it was around 2012, 2014 when the Arab Spring went down along with Occupy Wall Street and of course the cherry on top with Trump's election. The establishment elites started to panic that they were losing control over the minds and lives of the public. There was a rapidly growing number of people waking up to the collusion and corruption. So the current radical left along with the establishment right have been creating their own red guard youth by reaching out and empowering the fringe groups to go after the dominant group that they've been demonizing constantly. It's not a coincidence that every divisive hot button topic have all been unleashed at once. Then at the same time tens of millions of immigrants are let in, punishment for crimes is lessened, Police forces are gutted, defending oneself becomes a crime. All that we are witnessing is not a natural phenomenon. It's orchestrated by the global elites and those that have no loyalty to their sovereign nations. There are also scholars who have said that this is been implemented by the global elites because of Lucidities trap. Where one world power the US is challenged by a rising power China and to stop a world war, One power is forced to what they call sunset. Allowing the other to rise to a new Global leader. That being the case which do you think the elites would choose to go with in a time of uprising ? The one that promotes freedom or the one that is has techno totalitarian rule and some of the lowest human rights scores? As of today Pittsburgh PA. Just massively scaled back their Police presence to now they won't be responding to burglaries, theft, and many other crimes and with only have 8 officers covering the entire city during certain hours. Seems to me the people are being punished for daring to fight for their rights.

The only thing that can possibly temper cancel culture, I think, is the fact that it eats its own. NO ONE can say ANYTHING without risking offending SOMEONE, so eventually all of these ppl will piss someone off. The only real question is how much we lose between now and then. It’s disgusting.
THANKS MIKE
Social media is not included in the free speech amendment! That’s just stupid to think so
The media is not required to uphold your free speech. The government is. These corporations are private entities who can disassociate themselves from people they believe will hurt their profits.
Another wonderful quote:
"If you accept restrictions on free speech for any reason it means that you did not have an education. You had an indoctrination."
Wow! Thanks for clearing the air once again Mike!
My Mee-maw used to wax profoundly from time to time. (We haven't heard from her since she died.) One of my favorites applies to the arrogance of the populace today. She'd wag her finger at obvious puffery and say,
"Don't get so full of yerself that there's no room for the Holy Ghost."
Every time you think of the lesson she taught you you’re hearing from her😊
Tyranny does not go away thru debate.
@7:45 "causing this community" Ahhhhh these are law students. Who are going to practice law. Which scares the hell out of me.
Thank you Mike👍🏼
Oh my god the number of times I push back on certainty. People are certain of the most bizarre and unknowable things and will defend it to the end for no reason and with no basis. It's amazing.
Left or right, if someone says they're offended, I always replace that in my head with "I can't defeat your logic and I'm angry that you won't believe me without evidence".
Love this comment,
Well done again Mike! Thank you for your amazing work!
If there is a group of people who want to keep you from speaking, should they even be allowed to discuss the merits of censoring you?
Our speech , our vocabulary has been hijacked.
Once again, 'free speech' is about speech that you do not like. It's just not that hard.
Thank you Mike and Greg!
I'm going to speak no matter what they think the truth is the truth.
Slander is not protected speech. The truth must be preserved.
People need to learn the old adage "Opinions are like a$$holes, everybody has one." Doesn't mean you turn into one because of a difference of opinion.
God bless you Mike
By throwing the phrase "hate or racist " are supposed to give them the power to shut you up.
Amen! ❤🎉
I remember when the debating teams prepared for war, duked it out in the prescribed manner, took no prisoners and arguments were judged. Then victors and vanquished retired to the bar and celebrated the competition of debate. And basically obliterated themselves for the evening.
Been there , lived that , 1981-84 , those were the best of times ,,,,
Amen, Amen and AMEN!
Well said, great interview 👍
Mike, you are who i want as president.
Stay Awesome Mike !!!!!!
Excellent! Go FIRE
Mike Rowe is simply the best..period
The preamble to the Bill of Rights states clearly that the intention of the BoR was to keep the government from "Misconstruction or abuse of authority." Any compromise to the BoR is allowing them to do just that.
more people need to share this
How much easier is it to take away Rights from someone who doesn't know they have them?
You nailed it Mike!
I know it is a Dirty Job, but we need leadership.
You would have my vote.
Mr. Michael Rowe,
You are my hero. Please run for president of the dsa (formerly known as USA). 😮✌❤🙏
Hey Mikey! I like this podcast very much. Great content and subject matter. Mikey for California Governor! Cheers, Mate.
I noticed a lot of communication discord during the days of "hanging chads" and "disenfranchisement." People sure did take sides.
Masterpiece Theater - World On Fire....history always repeats itself as German Cancellor Otto von Bismark famously said, "what we learn from history, is that no one learns from history."
Mike Rowe is a nation treasure for the common hard working man.
Well said, Mike! Thanks. :)
Agree 100%
Thx Mike!
Well said...
Free speech doesn't give you a right to make up whatever you want
I am an old guy and I just can’t even believe how bad this has gotten. When I was working I lived in a predominantly conservative work force. We had a good friend who lovingly named our “token liberal”. We had many many conversations debating ideas. It was good for me at a relatively young age to learn our basic foundations were the same even if our ideas on getting things done were different. I don’t think young people now would even associate with non similar thinking people. They consider them enemies. What a terrible place we have made for ourselves.
Wiah I could thumbs up this 1000x
Ditto. (Well...except I _wish_ I could thumbs-up this a thousand times. 😉)
Too true...
The internet has become the ambulance in the saying; "A Lawyer chasing an ambulance." In some states it looks like that is illegal. I think the term is barratry.
Thank you
Free speech & other rights, once widely enjoyed in most 1st world countries has been steadily & subtly taken from us for decades.
What an eloquent, concise speaker this guest is.
I found that the music playing while they were speaking a bit distracting. To me it added an overtone that didnt quite match what was being said.
Mike please run for president!
Mike tour pod casts r always good
Mike Rowe is starting to look like a presidential candidate..... 😂
MIKE ROWE FOR PRESIDENT¡! 😄👍
Please use paragraphs.
Thank you for your work Mr Rowe.
Your scholarship put a friend’s kid into trade school.
Excellent!!! What happened to agreeing to disagree agreeably?
Mike Rowe is a legend!
