Greg impresses even himself on this haha. You can see the smiles from time to time when plays a really crazy line like "hell yeah, can't believe I pulled that one off"
Reading below, it's always shocking to me how people don't know Greg Howe. He's been around since the original late 80's Shrapnel era guitar virtuoso's. Truly one of the all-time greatest IMO, Introspection album is a masterpiece
The more you watch this, the more you realise you are watchng something very special indeed. I think this is already a standard for many years to come !
I think Ive watched this about 20 times now ! I think its one of the best guitar vids on youtube. So tasteful and melodic, yet technically frightening! It also takes a true genius to jam for 4 minutes and not repeat a lick. Incredible.
my guitar teacher when I was a kid would always talk about how great greg howe was and that he was underrated. I get it. There's more flavor in his playing than alot of the big name guitar soloists you think of
I cant stop to listen this...somebody help me! .....Greg thanks I cant explain how much you have been important all these years, inspiring music and give me the strength to continue to play even if I was always busy with my job and everyday life...every time, no matter how much I was tired i put on one of your song and my finger start to be itchy! Jah bless this man!
Years ago I grew out of this whole, "so and so is THE BEST GUITARIST" thing. There are so many crazy guitarists out there. Having said that Greg is one of my top 3 favorite of all times. The guy is just flat out sick.
the first time i heard Greg improvise, it felt so refreshing but somehow familiar like if i already heard 'the song' when i was a kid. now i realize that he just plays what i wanted to hear the most all my life... 5 years later i still come back to this video as a huge source of inspiration and feeling.
Greg is simply incredible... it's unbelivable how so few chords can make such a great melody that makes me happy every time I listen to it... AMAZING !!!
I forgot that Greg was doing that quick, first finger vibrato/slide thang he does since god knows when. Now I know where all of the more recent modern rock/fusion players stole that from
Without doubt THE most joyful, life-affirming bit of lead playing on youtube. What I wouldn't give to be able to approach this degree of playing.....for sale, one soul, one mother, etc.
I listen this sound every single day, and every time that I listen, I always stay impressed of how could this affect me so much, I'm very grateful for you share this with us, thanks.
just splendid playing..! there's no better title than 'sunny' for this song.... hearing this and the way he put his notes on it makes me wanna go on a holiday..
Gotta love this guy's tone and style. One of my favorite guitarists of all time! I say top 5 for sure with Paul Gilbert, Jeff Loomis, Guthrie Govan, and Marty Friedman, oh and of course Jason Becker!
Greg is really exceptional..... and this track is so melodic and groovy that it makes the whole thing very accessible. I'm so glad I could see him play in Paris after 20 years and more of listening to him. I just wish a live video or a live album would have been released....
Greg: I actually knew and worked with Bobby Hebb and I will tell you that you play Sunny to perfection. I know that Bobby would have been pleased with what you did as I am. You see Bobby and I worked for The Massachusetts Highway Department In Boston and he was always cool and I mean it. When Bobby Hebb died in 2010 The Massachusetts Highway Department lost more than a man we lost a legend as well. Steven M. Fanale
I don't understand how this video got any thumbs down at all! there are obviously over 100 viewers out of almost 2 million that are complete downer, know-it-all, douschebags that think they have a "real" sense of music and understanding of master improvisational work. I would like to see just one song in the world played by a solo guitarist that easily pleases everybody... This one is pretty darn close!
Yer sir! With John Scofeid (guitar), Joey Defranceso (Hammond and Bass - yes, at the same time, like Ray Manzerek on steroids:)) and Byron Landham (drums). Awesome version. But I also love Greg's approach. You know, there is an awesome guitar virtuoso by the name of Guthrie Govan who, I believe, and please correct me if I'm wrong, was inspired by Greg's technique. Check him out. Nonetheless, I love this version and thanks to the person that posted this.... a belated thanks at that:)
+Darrin Connor dislikes are people that are jealous and also disappointed in themselves that they cant practice or play guitar at this level. All I can say to them all is suck it ha.
is it possible to describe what scales is he using? I can identify Cmaj (I think), but there is so many crazy notes (that souns spetacularly cool). WTF is happening there?
Yes, you can always kind of point what scale he is using per chord. But I suggest to try thinking and playing in smaller chunks of information (ie: intervals, triads, quatriads), instead of scales. For example during a G7, you might play something based on G major triad plus a b9: if you go the scale route you will see this might come from many scales: altered, diminished, phrygian dominant, etc. Interesting, but confusing and not practical for playing in real time! There are no really shortcuts for fussion and jazz, but thinking in smaller units instead of 7-8 note scales (usually spanned for two and a half octaves) is much more easy to grasp, especially if you just started learning fussion/jazz.
someone plz correct me if I'm wrong : I think he uses also notes from the chromatic scale in his soloing (like guthrie govan or more precisely guthrie who does it the greg howe way)
He's actually one of guthrie's influences, not sure if he's better than guthrie though...you definitely hear a lot of howe's style of shred in guthrie's lines...but guthrie is a machine, he was manufactured in a HYDRA lab
greg is more interesting and creative in his playing, his phrasing is a milestone. govan has some serious chops though, but is clearly influecend from howe in his lead playing. greg had his style 25 years before guthries first release. hutchings can fuck off, no contest.
dislikes = people who either play shit themselves and can't stand Greg's genius or simply don't understand anything about music which would explain why they play like shit in the first place. Greg's playing is absolutely brilliant!
I've been watching this for almost 10 years..
Seriously guys, don't you feel like crying out of joy when watching this??
This is pure gold, he's a magician that uses notes instead of cards.
The phrasing really is first class, this guy is so underrated!
Greg impresses even himself on this haha. You can see the smiles from time to time when plays a really crazy line like "hell yeah, can't believe I pulled that one off"
Exactly. I can't believe that somebody can jam continuously for 4 minutes and not repeat a single lick - AND still make it sound so awesome !
Stopping by to have my monthly dose of this
Rodrigo Alves lol no doubt this shit is magical
Rodrigo Alves lol you aren't alone
mine is weekly lol

It’s 2018...still amazing!
The more you watch this, the more you realise you are watchng something very special indeed. I think this is already a standard for many years to come !
I've been coming back to this video for years now. So good
This song has inspired me endlessly
It's 2017 and this is still amazing!
but,
naaaaah taint, mate.
I think Ive watched this about 20 times now ! I think its one of the best guitar vids on youtube. So tasteful and melodic, yet technically frightening! It also takes a true genius to jam for 4 minutes and not repeat a lick. Incredible.

i could listen to this all day. the funk-shred combo gets me every time
followed this guy since his debut album. great great player!
His slide vibrato is so cool!!!!
Play it Greg!
the best modern fusion player ever him and Goven
Great playing Greg! See you at NAMM.
Fantastic! Perfect blends of speed, style and taste. Excellent.
I love Greg's phrasing. He's truly one of my favorite players of all time.
Jawdropping! Love the beautiful melodic lines and the doublestops within!
Still saying WHAT!!! after 1500 times watching him, ok maybe 1497 times. BADASS!!!
Years ago I grew out of this whole, "so and so is THE BEST GUITARIST" thing. There are so many crazy guitarists out there. Having said that Greg is one of my top 3 favorite of all times. The guy is just flat out sick.

Greg sounds so refreshing and natural! It's always a pleasure to hear and watch him playing!
You know when Greg pulls his pinky on to the fretboard, it means business
Its 2018 and still amazingg
Greg is simply incredible... it's unbelivable how so few chords can make such a great melody that makes me happy every time I listen to it... AMAZING !!!
This is great! I love all his sweep picking and mix of pentatonic and non-pentatonic modes on this song.
Amazing! Such great tone and phrasing!
I always come back to this vid!
Riffstation Me too
+Riffstation You and me both...that dude can PLAY
Sup sam!
+Riffstation +1 here!! Hehe
Amazing, allways
Just simply amazing. My fave guitar work on youtube.
Amazing jazz fusion licks with the horizontal approach on fretboard, yet very verticle in notation. Awesome GREG!
amazing Greg...serious. Sunny has been mastered now for sure. You and Pat Martino have the ultimate versions.
awsome summerish groove! 10/10 mate !!
At last this has a million hits and well deserved: The playing is just fabulous.
One of my favourite guitar masters! Greg Howe!
Awesome tone
I forgot that Greg was doing that quick, first finger vibrato/slide thang he does since god knows when. Now I know where all of the more recent modern rock/fusion players stole that from
yea
That technique has been used by blues and jazz players for decades.
That's fine, but I was talking about rock/fusion players.
Stefan Bulatovic ggg
Dave Fuze Fiuczynski uses it but I dont know who did it first...
Dude was scrubbing that fretboard up nicely!
So much inspiration in this! Great job Howe!
Awesome!!!!
I love his signature slide/fake bend thing he does. I always know when it's him playing because of that:-)
+detroitrockcity22
It's funny, that's the one thing I dislike about his playing.
You'll grow into it. It's sick.
yes, but how does he do it? i always burn my tips and than just ignore that part :)
Do you mean the glissando?
*Fake vibrato
Without doubt THE most joyful, life-affirming bit of lead playing on youtube. What I wouldn't give to be able to approach this degree of playing.....for sale, one soul, one mother, etc.
your my hero man, every time i hear you play i'm instantly happy. your the best!!
1:02 He actually ripped out "The Lick". Nice.
Noticed that too! What a classic!
Haha that slipped past me! Awesome!
fantastic Player !!
Thanks for sharing Mr. Howe!
I listen this sound every single day, and every time that I listen, I always stay impressed of how could this affect me so much, I'm very grateful for you share this with us, thanks.
he practically never plays the same lick twice. good luck. there are lots. his bag of tricks is deeper than everyone else's
wow. never really listened to this guy. but wow.
One of the best, soulful & skilled pieces of guitarmusic ever!!!!
just splendid playing..!
there's no better title than 'sunny' for this song....
hearing this and the way he put his notes on it makes me wanna go on a holiday..
0:34 - 0:38 (on 12 fret) is musical perfection!!!
I'm dying to know who are those 115 people who dislike this particular video, and ask them why???
amazing playing Greg.. really liked it!!!
+ohad levy Me too!!!
+ohad levy Yep, most likely a bunch of Sid Vicious die hards
Fantastic Guitarist!!!Musicly and technicly perfect. A great class to all of us simple mortals...
Still a blast every time i see and hear it
Now i want to see Guthrie Govan improvising on that!!!
absoulutley
Gotta love this guy's tone and style. One of my favorite guitarists of all time! I say top 5 for sure with Paul Gilbert, Jeff Loomis, Guthrie Govan, and Marty Friedman, oh and of course Jason Becker!
Happy Birthday Greg!

cool
I've been jamming to Greg's Sunny backing track for a while, and I love his solo here. Tasty! This guy's got the goods.
Gusto e raffinatezza esecutiva...
Magnifico Greg!
PS -
If you haven't heard it, go back & listen to Pat Martino play this on one of his early 70's albums. Definitely in the same vein.
Yes indeed Pat is another virtuoso.
p.s. fucking sick.
Greg Howe is one of my favorite guitarist . . keep going up Greg. .
This is a great rendition and is good for the soul!
He looks like Ramon from Bang Bros.
Jimmy Landa lol
im SO mad I know what you're talking about hahahahahahahahaha
How would I be able to get this tone?
Effortless and fluidly creative. Simply inspiring!
I listen to it again and again
I don't understand how this video got any thumbs down at all! there are obviously over 100 viewers out of almost 2 million that are complete downer, know-it-all, douschebags that think they have a "real" sense of music and understanding of master improvisational work. Dammit. I thought it was cheating to put a damper behind your fret hand! Just for that.... I'm gonna do it.
Always inspiring !
Still lovin' it!
Pat Martino ripped this song a new one back in the 70s. Check out him playing this too!
Yer sir! With John Scofeid (guitar), Joey Defranceso (Hammond and Bass - yes, at the same time, like Ray Manzerek on steroids:)) and Byron Landham (drums). Awesome version. Saki Kaskas oh yeah this is serious too. That video is amazing. Guthrie is amazing also. His technique is insane
greg OMG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in my mind i play like u but i have a prblem with my fingers :))
Stefan Elowson I've been thinking that way since 1988.....I think I have a problem with my brain AND fingers!!
It 's a powerful playing!!! very good energy and feeling
I could watch this all day ! ! !
"Howe to play like how" oh wait ...
123 dislikes? How is that possible?? Who are these people???
+Darrin Connor lol so strange that makes you laugh
+Darrin Connor dislikes are people that are jealous and also disappointed in themselves that they cant practice or play guitar at this level. All I can say to them all is suck it ha.
Then how would they come across a Greg Howe video? Its jealousy because they are probably mediocre and shit themselves
+Darrin Connor
tone deaf people
Probably disliked by people who don't understand Jazz. Jazz is not for everyone...
Wow! Super! Greg Howe is the best!
Oooh, I love Greg's playing, so melodic and he can shred also, great video!
I play guitar, but this just killed me totally... OK..., i'm just “collecting“ axes ;-)
is it possible to describe what scales is he using? I can identify Cmaj (I think), but there is so many crazy notes (that souns spetacularly cool).
WTF is happening there?
+Renan Beltrão hey ren, there's a guitar transcription which also includes the tab form as well from hal publishing. try ya luck there!
He is using modal scales (different modes of Ionian scale).
Renan Beltrão it's all A minor pentatonic
someone plz correct me if I'm wrong :
I think he uses also notes from the chromatic scale in his soloing (like guthrie govan or more precisely guthrie who does it the greg howe way)
The timeless Greg Howe.
Not one wasted note. I'm in awe of this magnificent performance.
when i see this guy , i think : enough of satriani , vai and even timmons , greg howe and tony macalpine are for me beast guitar players.
one of very few guitarists who might actually be better than Guthrie.
Wow!! Why do you say that? I actually try hard not to compare them
lmfao he's not even close. Alex Hutchings over this guy too.
I found his playing less boring compared to those two.
He's actually one of guthrie's influences, not sure if he's better than guthrie though...you definitely hear a lot of howe's style of shred in guthrie's lines...but guthrie is a machine, he was manufactured in a HYDRA lab

Again this must be the fourth time I have replied to this. The best guitar solo on you tube. Simply breathtaking.
This is RIDICULOUSLY CLEAN.
Greg ix in another PlANET
dislikes = people who either play shit themselves and can't stand Greg's genius or simply don't understand anything about music which would explain why they play like shit in the first place.
Greg's playing is absolutely brilliant!
Loved every note......AWESOMENESS
Ughhhh. He just makes it look so easy. Greg is the man
