Man, why is this guy so far under the radar??? I am completely blown away.
He's always been a bad mf. Beckish. His tapping is very musical, really melodic player.
You should check out his track Jump Start. Stumbled upon that way back when...absolutely blew my mind. watch?v=-fZ_TcDspwc
@@spinaltap22 I'll definitely check this out, thanks!
He's a god in the world of guitar, Greg was never mainstream and his prime was early 90s.
I am 51 but just seeing this man's name takes me back to when I was in my teens trying to listen to Everybody on shrapnel records.
He is one who's style trancends
48. Same.
Greg Howe is from another universe...that was totally PHENOMENAL!!!
Most technically gifted, pyrotechnical, a billion notes a second players usually end up doing a lot and saying not very much musically but.... Greg is one of those few exceptions to the rule. Greg really does have something to say and he says it very, very, well indeed. Keep rockin'.
just freaking amazing!!
Greg Howe, Tony Macalpine and Vinnie Moore are my three favorite guitarrist ever!!
Greg n Vinnie are two of mine.
Same!! I love Greg and Vinnie
3 great choices. 🎸🎸🎸🪄🪄🪄🎛️🎛️
Good three
You will like andy Timmons then, also check out carl verheyen
About 27 years ago ....I try to learn this song and ...
Find my self as " I'm not a good guitarist at all ...just kid wanabe good"
Now ...2020 still trying T .T
I didn't know who Greg Howe was until recently. Now I can't stop listening to him. Amazing!
I was into him way back when he 1st broke out in the mid 1980s.......yep a true ax man with style and smoothness.
I grew up listening to these guys. It was amazing. The 80s rocked!
Same! How am I just finding out about this guy?!
Sheer fluidity, taste and expressiveness. One of the only 80s guitar pioneers I've never had the privilege of seeing live.
I love this guy. He has the skills of a shredder and the swing and feeling of a funky player
I used to jam with this guy back in the late 80's. He is definitely a perfectionist. I enjoyed playing with him.
I knew him when he was with his brother knocking out Van Halen etc... He was always such a modest great dude. He was still playing his Sears body Frankenstein guitar.
One of the most underrated gunslingers!
Greg how and richie kotzen are my heros. Love their hollsworthesque smooth melodic lines. Killer!
This takes me to wide open, bright green fields where the clouds are all smiling and rainbows are dancing and ducks are jumping rope... all while I lay in the grass filling my ears with this sweet sweet jam🎸
Greg is an unfortunate case, in a sense. He pioneered a sound 20+ years ago which most (guitar enthusiast) listeners only seem ready for in recent years. Even today, he doesn't seem to be riding the same wave of success as Guthrie, for example. Not at all claiming Guthrie doesn't deserve that respect, but check out Greg's albums from the 90s; such a lot like Guthrie's sound!
my father was friend of piazzolla, he died alone almost without money ... That happened to a lot of musicians ... i know EXACTLY what you´re saying ... i also look a lot for that Shawn Lane where most shitty guitarrist will NEVER go: music with no frontiers. Vai is Vai, but not a flexible musician. As is Malmsteen, and even old school, they stop at jazz and cant go beyond. Great composers go to a level beyond their instrument, it´s about their music, and not about ´a good guiatarrist and composer´. Greg is good, but he´s limited to his style.
YummyBananaFish you do know Guthrie is influenced by Greg Howe?
YummyBananaFish I don't exactly understand your claim of Greg Howe not matching Guthrie's current success? This is the same Greg Howe that did touring duties with Michael Jackson, Enrique Iglesias, N Sync, and Justin Timberlake right? The same guy that recorded Extraction with Dennis Chambers and Victor Wooten? I would call that monumentally successful by any stretch of the "solo guitar player" imagination.
I would almost say both careers are rather similar considering Guthrie's own session work, and being in a fusion trio of other highly capable artists. I saw The Aristocrats recently in SF in a small venue full of musicians and music nerds like myself, they definitely aren't selling out stadiums.
Alex D Well put, although surely Guthrie has gained a mythological status somewhere around 'best guitarist in the world' which Greg has never been graced with. It seems to me that, about 10 years ago, technical guitar saw a resurgence in popularity among my generation of guitar players, with guys like Guthrie and Paul Gilbert (or rather, PG version 2, now that he insists on playing old man licks) at the forefront. Internet videos seem to be essential in this having happened.
Greg was making records during a dead era for technical guitar music (the 90s) and he hasn't been pulled up to quite the same level of notoriety as Guthrie/PG, in these recent years. He's not the only one, either. Just seems unfortunate... although I'm sure there must be plenty more to it than bad timing.
YummyBananaFish Well a big part of PG's notoriety is the fact that he was really at the forefront of "modern shred" and in many ways was the "American Yngwie". Certainly one of the most influential figures for all shredders. Combine that with him being a mega star in Japan as part of Mr. Big (and having a hit American single) and it's understandable why he's such a force among modern shredders.
Guthrie is a special case, whether or not he's deserving of the "best guitarist" moniker (or whether anyone ever is, I'm sure he would certainly argue against such a title) is debatable. But he is a special sort of multi talented chameleon guitar playing freak that only seems to come around once in a blue moon. Even among his peers Guthrie's talent and versatility stands out.
Another thing to consider is that while Greg was emerging he was surrounded by a huge pool of talented instrumentalists over at Shrapnel (and in the 80s). During his debut his contemporaries were guys like Kotzen, Friedman, and Becker. So it's possible that because of his era (which produced a good amount of shredding legends) that he got lost in the mix. Guthrie bloomed a little later and doesn't have many contemporaries that I care to listen to, or who have achieved even half of his success.
This man is a High Level Super Grand Master!!!
for all who liked this, Please do listen to the collaboration album "Kotzen/Howe"
tilt :)
3:18 Greg be like 'transcribe that, bitch'
Haha!
I'm not claiming I can, but the 0,5x speed function in the youtube-player sure helps :)
Mmm, that makes it sound like a robot on acid. I'm giving up and just enjoying Greg's playing!!
Mateo Bakija lol
lol right !
What an amazing player, he's got style, flash a virtiouso of a player and on top if it all, he's got so much soul.
That's what sets him apart from all the other fusion shredders: his shredding always swings.
@@YaoEspirito big facts if you don’t have soul you lose me every time Steve Vai is a perfect example he can shred but the man has zero soul this man just oozes it
@@parkerthompson3447
I think Richie Kotzen sometimes does; that's prolly why they recorded a record together.
@@YaoEspirito I spent $100 for a vai show recently and walked away feeling so empty Guthrie Govan and Greg Howe to me are 2 of the best guitarists there is that actually have soul while their playing and can fuse so much together with the notes they play I’ve seen Guthrie twice and im seeing Greg twice front row this year I’m so excited

I had the honor to jam with Greg back in the 80's. It was awesome!
Sublime playing, from the ever humble and AMAZING Greg Howe.
Greg is truly a blessed and gifted musician. He is no doubt one of my favorite guitarist.
I started listening to Greg back in high school.....crazy to think that has been damn near 30 years of kick ass guitar...
Absolutely fenomenal bit of composing and guitar playing. Love it!!
so underrated....
Not true. I rate his work very high.
In more serious sense, maybe he don't want that crazy kind of fame which will most likely disturb and push him in some kind of boundaries. He is how he likes it to be, having fun with what he loves to do in his own manner.
not underrated but not so well known as Vai, Marty Friedman etc.
not to real guitarists
we all know who are the masters are
guthrie, greg, marco
three giants
Greg é sem dúvida um dos maiores de todos os tempos !!!
one of the best tones ive ever heard
Wow, a very competent guitarist who I can listen to for more that two minutes - very rare.
For those who may not know....Greg was one of the first "rock" guys to tap leading with the left hand- in other words, when he taps, he is hammering the notes with his left hand first. It opens a lot of doors because you can play arpeggios, string skip, slide in and out of notes with left hand or just a run a 3 or 4 note per string phrase. No doubt it spawned the next level of shred.
Before you tube, it's hard to say if Guthrie came up with that on his own. Who knows- but Gregs been doing this since 89
I agree with you, but he's been doing it since 87, actually. :)
And that's just since he's been recording music!
Yes. He calls it "hammer-ons from nowhere." It's an incredibly powerful and flexible technique once mastered.
I suspect Guthrie got it from Greg.
Esse é o cara...um mostro, musicalidade bom gosto e técnica perfeita...nao é aquela coisa chata que a gente sabe e tá cansado.
How come I've never heard about you b4? I feel ashamed! You are legendary, man. One of top 5 in all times. Thank god for musicians like you.
Greg Howe in my opinion is absolutely one of the finest players ever!! He plays on a level that is just simply superior anyone who has ever played a guitar. When you add his creativity to the equation it puts him easily over the top. Just listen to his entire discography and you will get the picture, if you are a guitarist, you will see what I mean.
This song is so good... this man is a total master of creativity and guitar playing!
This first album was the perfect mix of shred, musicality and happiness, still my best album of Greg so far !
Браво!!великолепнейшая композиция!!👍👍👍
I’ve been listening to Greg since he first released this song on shrapnel records. He’s Always been one of my favorites next to Richie Kotzen.
The two collaborations they did together were amazing.
Greg is amazing
Greg puts all non musical shredders to shame.
GREG HOWE is one of my favorite guitarist I often refer to him as THE SON OF HENDRIX. Keep Rockin Greg
One of mi favs for sure. This guy is pure genius
This guy has to be the best guitarist ever.
Felipe Gualberto try guthrie govan
You are talking about the second best, lol.
Hhahahaha! I don't doubt that.
Felipe Gualberto try Shaun lane then tell me
Santiago Bonetti try Shaun lane then tell me
I know it's just flash, but I love that hammer-on lick he does at 3:18
Yes! Looks like a wide interval lick with tapping
Great play with a big groove ! This guy got a unique style!
what a great tune .....
Unmatched fusion guitar virtuoso!
Это просто праздник какой-то!!! Грейг Хоув-запильный гитарист! Столько радости мне дал этот ролик!!!
This is the first time I hear Greg Howe...very beautiful style..amazing technique ..His style, for me, is something between Steve Morse and Allan Holdsworth..this song reminds me the Dixie Dregs..great memories.. amazing Greg!
Greg always had the most feel out of all the shredders to me!
What can you say after this....WOW!!
Greg is not the average shredder,he is amusician with many things to say,not just a lick-after-lick player.Somebody to learn a lot from with an original approach.A great player
His work with Ritchie Kotzen on Tilt is still my favorite of the Shrapnel years…
I was not too much into fusion, but that album is phenomenal. Two guitar giants going at it in their prime.
One of my favorite tracks! Thank you for sharing Greg! \m/
Not only is this the best version of this song on youtube, it might just be the best video on youtube! Greg is unbelievable!
runrunrun6777 Good but far from the best.
