Elephant Mountain was one of the greatest albums of the '60's and highly underrated. There is jazz, roots, Celtic, psychedelic, everything on this. Jesse Colin Young was one of the greatest singers of all time.
This is an excellent live version indeed. In my opinion, having loved the song from the first time I heard it in '69, the studio recording is one of the finest rock tunes from that era.
One of the best vocalist from the 60's thru The Youngbloods to his solo efforts in the 70's (Song for Julie , Songbird ie: ) to now he never shortchanged his music .. A complete musician I have respected his work.. Rock on as long as you can...
WHOA, Jesse, you gave me chills. I was thinking, "oh this will be another superannuated star who still thinks they can sing 40 years on :(. " But I checked it out anyway, and truly, you still have the magic. And in fact, I can feel the depth and passion even more after all the years. GO JESSE and thanks for posting. AWESOME.
Wonderful. One of my biggest influences. Still love it today and have never stopped playing the Youngbloods. I was fortunate to see JCY at U C Davis when I was over in Sacramento in 1979 I think it was.
This song will always be with me. I was 13 when I heard it and it is hauntingly beautiful and horror evoking at the same time, knowing it is a meant to be a Vietnam War soldiers prayer...
This song makes me think of smokey mountains, sexy woman, and good whiskey, sitting around a camp fire somewhere with good friends, listening to good music. Listen to this and leave the troubles of the world behind.
this song has gotten me thru some bad times. Somehow it's reassuring to know at least one other person knows how dark one's life can get. Thank you Mr. JCY...
it was 1978 a small club in makawao maui me n a friend were flying on an once of pure colombian flake..we were making so much noise n going to the head jesse was laughing at us while he was playing...was served a complete gourmet dinner all we ate was couple of strawberrys n a couple bottles of wine...one of my greatest memories those were da dayzzzzz man
Still got the power to grab the soul and stick in the mind. Perfect with Celtic-flavored music/tempo, with the violin. The version that always stuck with me, from the '70's, was a very lyrically rendered version...cannot remember who sang that, but to this day, it runs through my mind, with cascades of emotions weaving, dancing through it. However it did it, it was/has been a form of something to hang onto, to get by and survive.
Love this song...have not heard it for years....brings back great memories..growing up in Australia. The song is not well known here which makes it all the more special that it can be accessed on RUclips. Thanks for posting. Hauntingly beautiful!
one of the most original/unique voices ever. And, boggie chillens, we're talking bout the 60s...the rebirth of freedom of expression. I sure as hell hope this man, his group, are in the RNRHOF.
I've always wondered what happened to JCY and where he was...and to find out he is right in my back yard is awesome! I still have my vinyl of his from the 70s...all payed forward to my 20-something son, who is also a music lover.
+Holly Jaye - He was a neighbor of mine as well. I've been in music since I was 13 (Singer/Bass payer/Song writer for Screamin' Bloody Murder). I'm in my 60's now, but still playing and writing. Jesse had me up to his Mt Tam home (Ridgetop) several times. Super nice guy and still is. He was/is one of my favorite singers. Love your thoughtful comments. You are a true music lover and I sincerely hope your son gets to love the music from that era. Hugs, Katie.
@@katieadams7803 His manager used to live across the street from me and I got to meet Jesse back in 1970 with the Youngbloods. Serious yet cool guy in my book and I agree his vocals are on top of my shortlist of favorites. I was in several bands but being with Beethoven's Nightmare has been the longest so it's cool hearing from another musician.
Saw Jesse and the Youngbloods at the Satsop River Rock Festival summer of '71. One of the best sets I've ever heard. Sweet, sweet tones from the whole band.
Whoever hasn't heard Eric Burton's version of this Live In Athens..... Do yourself a favour...it's AWESOME & Burdon takes it to a whole new level. 50yrs of psychedelics use here!!
Just watched a movie entitled "Jack The Bear" and the opening song is Darkness Darkness. The sound track featured other golden oldies. The movie was excellent.
Great Posting "Jack Twist" > Couldn't have expressed it better - well said I was fortunate to be able to hang-out with these guy's, and so many other Great Legends of Music in that era. 1969 was a Hotbed of Great Musicians with Great Lyrical Music that is still being used in so many of our Films, TV Series, Documentaries, Etc. I remember purchasing my brand-new 1968 Ford Mustang 390 GT 2+2 Fastback after watching the Movie "Bullitt" w/actor Steve McQueen, released Oct/1968. That car gave several different known musicians, a ride for their life, at times. Still own it today !
He certainly still has it in this video. I did hear one that I think was part of a 10 part series, where his vocals sounded pretty rough. But, maybe he was feeling a little rough that day. Can't be 100% on 100% of the time!
I so agree ! Nirvana (who commented sarcastically on "Get Together" on the "Nevermind" album) are not worthy to be even mentioned in the same paragraph as the Youngbloods. We so need this passion and optimism today !
Aiken, SOUTH Carolina.. but still pretty cool. Understand that Jesse lives there now (did he really move from the Ridgetop in Northern California and then Hawaii to Aiken, of all places?). Saw him years and years ago in Atlanta, but would love to see him live in an intimate setting such as this. Thanks for posting a video of one of my long-time and all-time favorite singer / guitarist / songwriters.
Yes, truly, he actually IS better. I also knew his music in the 60's. So many of the stars who keep performing are just shadows of thier former selves, but to get better? Totally cool.
40 years later in 2008, I purchased the New "Bullitt" Hyland-Green Ford Mustang GT 4.6L /Numbered Series Collector Version, built in rememberence of Steve McQueen and his Movie Bullitt. Awesome car-chase scene in movie - streets of San Francisco.
If the 60's were like now, I'd have been committed - my 3 favorite songs were this one, CJ&Fish's "Death Sound Blues", and Kaleidoscope's "Oh Death". Had my mom a bit worried. Oddly, I just listened to them a lot - no thought of doing anything - just liked songs in a minor chord...
Yep. Graduated high school in '75 so, while I just a kid, I clearly remember the nightly news of the war and the related riots in nearby Madison WI. Lots of great artists/music came out of the period, but not much of the whole, peace, love and understanding message of the day survived. I am not disagreeing with your comment, rather just making the point that these kids are the products of their environment, and nobody's really more to blame than mom and dad.
You really should look up what the song is about... The jungle in Vietnam. Fearing an unseen enemy. Praying for darkness to come for "safety". The song has always sent chills down my spine and tears to my eyes.
The Youngbloods are deep in my brain and their music will stay with me always. Thank you.
Elephant Mountain was one of the greatest albums of the '60's and highly underrated. There is jazz, roots, Celtic, psychedelic, everything on this. Jesse Colin Young was one of the greatest singers of all time.
He IS one of the greatest singers! Alone or with a band. Love his mixtures of styles!
Yeah, my friends and I loved this album. Unfortunately it got very little recognition. Don't know why.
This is an excellent live version indeed. In my opinion, having loved the song from the first time I heard it in '69, the studio recording is one of the finest rock tunes from that era.
What a great lyricist is Jesse Colin Young.
i´m 19 years old and i love this song :)
Sarah Krühler It appears you’re 25 now 🤓
The violin intro is so beautifully haunting. I've always loved this song, it describes depression very well.
Probably the most under rated musical master of my prime. I liked him then, I love him now.
@Elizabeth Brower might want to have your hearing examined...
@Elizabeth Brower Surely you jest.
This album was a favorite of mine and my friends during our last year of high school. We loved it!
One of the best vocalist from the 60's thru The Youngbloods to his solo efforts in the 70's (Song for Julie , Songbird ie: ) to now he never shortchanged his music .. A complete musician I have respected his work.. Rock on as long as you can...
Incredible era for Jesse. So creative.

Just like back in the day, the fiddle really makes the song. Gives it soul. Great song.
A voice like no other.
This song will always be with me. I was 13 when I heard it and it is hauntingly beautiful and horror evoking at the same time, knowing it is a meant to be a Vietnam War soldiers prayer...
from one who served back then, Thank you!
This song makes me think of smokey mountains, sexy woman, and good whiskey, sitting around a camp fire somewhere with good friends, listening to good music. Listen to this and leave the troubles of the world behind.
What an AWESOME Place I found here honoring Jesse Colin Young! Wow! LOVE IT! In Memory of John Swenson Marine Sgt. Viet Nam Veteran. Our Music!
Beautiful ~ I feel like I’m back there (60 ~ 70’s)!😱💙😱
Such a legend....such a lovely, lovely man. So sweet, so genuine.
Excellent song and beautiful voice
WE Played with the Youngbloods at Carnegie Hall June 30th 1970, when this was a hit on the radio!!!
Think I was there. Awesome!
AWESOME AS ALWAYS !!!
Soulful. Awesome performance. Great to hear this, different than the original, just as good.
this song has gotten me thru some bad times. Somehow it's reassuring to know at least one other person knows how dark one's life can get. Thank you Mr. JCY...
Hey Judy sometimes darkness is comfort ...shelter ...
Not always is it synonymous with evil
Awesome Music of my youth.
A "mountain" of talent and substance. Just as good as it gets. One of the great "communicators"....
So GOOD. One I have never seen. I pray that Covid leaves us so I may continue to see the musicians I have LUVED, and still do...
Amazing!!!
AIken is in SOUTH Carolina, thank you very much.
I love this song
One of the best voices in his or any era. Was great in 1969 and didn't sound to bad 40 years later.

One helluva singer and I too would gladly pay to see him in concert.
love
Jesse - God Bless You- talent like this never dies - should be the Anthem of the world!!!
No longer a youngblood but still magical, the singer and the writer and the song. brilliant.
Just a fantastic musician. Can't wait to see him on Live from Daryl's House tonight, 2/17/17
One of my all time favorite songs. My funeral song!! Awesome!
Still got the power to grab the soul and stick in the mind. Perfect with Celtic-flavored music/tempo, with the violin.

Just awesome !!!
Magnificent!

Beautiful song, beautiful performance xx

Don't count on it, so many greats have been left out and so many lame asses inducted.
Rock on Jessie
Just dynamite! Just takes me straight back to Vietnam era! Disturbing dark days.
I've always wondered what happened to JCY and where he was...and to find out he is right in my back yard is awesome! I still have my vinyl of his from the 70s...all payed forward to my 20-something son, who is also a music lover.

The violinist is fantastic
How life will toss and turn your consciousness inside out and make you reach for darkness darkness and rest.

Fantastic, brings back so many memories!
In 1972 I thought that was the perfect song. That was it.
One of Jesse's best.
Still has some power in that distinctive voice. He's a good one!
Yes, he's still got it. Awesome.
He just gets better ....saw him Gainesville Fla. 1970's.
Awesome !! What a song and such wicked good instrumentals.
Absolutely Beautiful!
That was kick ass!
I am glad to finally hear the author of this song sing it!
Originally written for the Youngbloods.
Come on! He is Jesse Colin YOUNG! The Youngbloods! He is the everything of this band!!!
Great Posting "Jack Twist" > Couldn't have expressed it better - well said

Wow, an amzing performance
My favorite Halloween song
Am I the only one who likes this version a lot better than the original one from when he was younger?
Awesome tune....

Awsome Band love it 🙌
I & I was there for the FUN.....and was NOT diss-appointed...!!! very FARM OUT!
Excellent!!!
Awesome......
I think his voice is still often. He can sing me to sleep anytime.
love it, love it, especially the woman on the violin
That's his wife, Connie.
RaxOldies love her playing. I play similar style on my old fiddle.
Trying to figure it out on my fiddle. Do you know of any tabs around. Thanks.

l love your music and fell in love with you when I seen you.
I would do him young or old. A master of my heart.
Nice cool version.

Thanks for this fine upload.
I think you mean Aiken SOUTH Carolina though.
Aiken is the hometown of his wife Connie Young.
Jesse's Ridgetop home burned to the ground in a disastrous California fire, sadly... love ya Jesse..
Hey, Jesse Colin Young
...I just wanna say that I hear what you’re saying.
And thanks to Robert Plant for introducing me to this song!
Would love to see him doing this at a much earlier date!
And in the LAST DAYS many will become lovers of themselves...
2 Tim 3:1-5
Whoah that's heavy
