TL431 is a great component to have in your kit. Also,. important to note there are A, B, and C suffixes for different precision grades, the part is made by a lot of companies who use different prefixes instead of TL, though commonly still "431". Also - very crucial - there is a TLV431, which has a reference voltage of just 1.25V. Where you describe the part you're using as allowing 37V from Cathode to Anode, you point to the top of your circuit, where you have a resistor and an LED. Actual Cathode voltage point is at the TL431 Cathode across to it's Anode - in your circuit, the very top would have an additional LED Vf, and whatever the Vdrop over the resistor would be subtracted from the top rail. Later in the video, you measure that (under the conditions at the time) as 3.4V Worth noting that the reference voltage source does not need to be the same one as the cathode supply (as long as both share grounds) - the reference could be a higher (or lower) voltage from say, charging a battery, while the cathode might be biased from a regulated 5V supply (as an example). Cheers.
Thank you for taking the time to explain this. I have a question though, when testing, the led still glows dimly before 2.5v is reached. I don't see a solid turn on at 2.5v. The led just gradually gets brighter as the voltage is increased. Is this correct?
Thanks a lot, very informative tutorial! 🙌 I’m planning to design a 48V converter using a microcontroller and want to implement overvoltage protection that cuts off the PWM when the voltage reaches 56V, without generating any interrupts. Could you please make a video on how to achieve this? That would be super helpful! 👍
I love your eloquence in electronics. I need to know what is he make of your de-soldering gun to buy one for my workshop. It removes the parts very well and leaves the work clean and decent

Hello. I'm testing TL431. My supply voltage is 12V and current limiting resistor is 1k. Both resistors in voltage divider is 10k so I suspect 5V on the output but instead I can see ~3,5V. Is it mean my TL431 is damaged? When I connect ref pin to cathode I have 2,5V.
Mr Haseeb,as always a very informative content.Keep doing.I would like to ask if in smps power supply with 5v output which use Tl431 is possibile to reduce voltage to 1.5 v working with resistors in the divider. If yes ,would help to teach us how and the interaction between tl431 and driver circuit.Tkx in advance Carlo
Thr tl431 will not operate below 2.5v so without some sort of trickery the answer is no. You could maybe find an alternative part that works with 1v or less that works the same way and then you could do this. But normally this is used to control the feedback to set the voltage and this part needs 2.5v before it operate. So 1.5 is too low to make it work like this.
I need low battery indicator when voltage come to 2.5v ledu want's to be on and when it was above 2.5v led should be off can you share one video for that
but when I increase the voltage higher then 2.5v led turns off again. I want led off only lower then 2.5v but led stay on higher voltage. is there any way to do so? Thanks
The problem is the ones i tested triggers at 1.7~volts (+- 0.1v) 😅😢 and i was vondering why the circuit doesnt work... also there 0.5k resistance when not activatedand allmost 0ohm when activated .. so printed designs wont work exactly same for any device... chjnesse ones mostlikely big part of them trigger at 1.7v instead 2.5b 😊
you ONLY ONE from all youtubers what i've seen, who right described how is TL431 works !!!!!! thank you!!!!
it is my pleasure
and special thanks for your valuable words for my efforts
True! This explanation is the best so far from what I've watched too. Haseeb is a gem?!
Excellent thanks for sharing this informative video keep sharing

Thank you Hasseeb. As usual always explaining dificult situations easily.

Nice video,Please make a video tl431 proper calculation.12&24v supply.
love you sir
What about where they use tl431 and another zener diode in parallel chirwa. S , Zambia.
Please explain about overdrive voltage of tl431. How much excess than 2.5 voltage can be safely applied to it
👌👌👌👍

The other problem is this normally drives an opto coupler and that has a minimum on voltage as well. It's minimum is probably too high to work at 1.5v
@@newmonengineering tkx a lot for the hint.I'm really interested to undersrand the limit in such feedback and drive circuits
