Finding a 200 year old house buried in the garden - timelapse - PART 2

  • Part 2 of probably a 10+ part video series of me digging up the ruins of an old house in part of the garden in Wales, UK. The house dates back to at least 1839 based on local maps, but is probably 200-300+ years old. It became uninhabited and buried over time.
See the playlist on my Channel for the other videos. Part 3 coming soon.

Back from my holidays and have done a few more days digging and these are the results. I will try and make these videos longer so there's more to sink your teeth in to, but wanted to get another video out to show I'm alive😀.
I also said in the comments to Part 1 that I will be doing a walkthrough explaining it in more detail/showing what I've found, and answering your questions. I haven't forgotten and that will be done in the next week, promise. It will be a combined walkthrough of the dig so far.
In case anyone asks about the stairs (though it should be clear from the video) , they aren't part of the house, they are external garden steps going up from the road. They were never hidden/buried, just overgrown. They are common around here as it is hilly and the country lanes are sunk into the hillside so steps go up the garden. Never knew it led straight to a building. I think in fact they go straight to a doorway, which if I'm right will be revealed in part 3!

Parts of the wall that have collapsed either side sometimes land completely level in the soil so I find big pieces of stone and think I've found a new wall going off in another direction. I usually leave them and dig around them for a while, then sheepishly realise a few hours later that it's just a stone and I've wasted my time. Part of the job I guess!😅

I am amazed at how a house even gets 'buried'. What would have happened to the upper part of the house? • @afontirs
      @afontirs  Год назад +14

This was over 4 full days. I'm not sure about the roof, I think it must have been removed as you say and used for something else. Even if it stopped being lived in 150 years ago and collapsed, there would be evidence of timber beams in the soil as that's not very old and they would easily last, but I've found no wood at all. And I think someone commented in Part 1 that there's no sign of fire damage either otherwise the stonework would be charred. There are also no tiles, houses around here from that time did often have stone tile as opposed to slate, but even so they are very distinctive and I've found none.

    Just found your videos...
    Watched pt2 then pt1...
    Absolutely fascinating...
Maybe looks like it was buried?
And fascinating finds in the rubble?
    Looking forward to next video...
    It's a great adventure...
    Bless...

With a bit of patching up you have the makings of an excellent sunken garden with a ready-made firepit (if that's what you want to do...)

I think that's the plan. Might patch up parts of the walls and grow a climber or even an espalier fruit tree.

Well done Afon, I’m sure that with a lick of paint and a little bit of carpentry work you’ll be moving in real soon. 😂

Can't wait for the rest of the series! Very interesting to see how the soil isn't compacted yet. Any idea of when the demolition happened? Shame about the range. It could either have been left intact or removed - just not smashed up and left.
