I wish SOFAD had gotten a Strange Devotion video, definitely the peak for DM image wise. However, what I do remember of 30yrs ago was how niche it was to be a British fan of Mode and watching these videos at home in isolation like a form of modern art that nobody got.
Me too!! Get a nice warm feeling when it starts up...Alan Wilder Fan Boy Alert!!! Sounds kinda Star Trek Original Series...ish...any comments Vaughan??
Brilliant! You just described what I was feeling when I first saw it! And yes you are perfectly right in saying there could not be anything better then what Anton produced for them with Strange series!
Anton Corbijn's approach to videos and his concept is the visual equivalent of Martin Gore's "Gorism" making music that you mention in other reviews, that's why conventional videos don't work with songs, because the strange and unconventional approach fits perfectly with the music ...
Anton is genius. Have read a lot about him and his colaboration not only with DM, just love his colours, atmosphere, feeling he managed to provoke in his videos, perfect marriage
To be precise Split mix you can call easily as the extended version. When you listen to the ending of NLMDA on the album but loud, you can hear that this is fade out, not cut. This is fade out of the same bridge as it goes on the split mix version. So same song but longer, same video but longer. Regarding American clip of Strangelove. The song is not the same as you can hear on a single from 87 or on the album. In 88 Sire asked to remix Strangelove once again, shoot a video and released as single in 88 once again (possibly to earn some $$ due to the second visit of depeche MODE in North America in 88). That's why we call it Strangelove 88 and not count to the single from 87. Maybe I'm wrong but I think 88 version was remixed by Tim Simenon and Mark Saunders.
Superb comment 👍🏻 Here’s more info on the various tracks you mention. The ‘Split Mix’ is not an extended version, the ‘Split Mix’ was used (and faded, as you correctly point out) due to the album being way behind schedule. This is also the reason the album version of ‘Strangelove’ is different. It is basically an edited version of the ‘Blind Mix’ from the limited edition 12 inch single. The Strangelove ‘88 video is the album version, the 7 inch single is an edit of the album version. The 12 inch has the Highjack Mix by Tim Simenon and Mark Saunders and the 3 inch CD contains the Remix Edit, which is an edited version of the Highjack Mix.
@@mickwilson1969 thank you. I knew that there is something in it but I didn't know the correct order. Now it's clear for both songs NLMDA and SL 88. So I have to collect not only 12” 88 but also 7” 88 and CD version 88 :)
in the case of Anton‘s videos for the MFTM area, i like these grainy coarsley granulated thing especially for „never let me down again & behind the wheel“.
Yay, thanks! Was waiting for this! I always saw 'Strange' as perfection, got hooked on its grittiness from the first view. All this 'arty-farty' stuff just fits right in with the mood and atmosphere of the songs. Definitely among my favourite videos. I wish they re-released 'Strange' and 'Strange Too'.
Totally agree with your comment about Never let me down again video. Didn't get the idea of Dave in the 3 wheel car. I thought if made the band look silly. But looking back at this now. It's definitely Anton's humour. They are taking the Michael out of themselves without the audience actually realising this.
I love photos & videos Anton Corbijn made for Echo & The Bunnymen before he started to work with DM. You could say B&W arty, low budget films are very '80's', I guess it all started when Jim Jarmusch's 'Stranger than Paradise' became a cult classic (funnily enough, the film was based on Yasujiro Ozu's 'Tokyo Story', B&W film from 1953).
It´s hilarious how you describe the members of the band on Behind the wheel.. I love your impressions on how Marty laughs or how Fletch speaks. You´re good.
I will never forget the review of Strange in the NME ( I believe it was) and the reviewer was saying he never really got Depeche Mode but he said after watching that he realised Depeche Mode were "bastard ace".
The American version of StrangeLove music video was directed by Martyn Atkins who also did the music video for Little 15. Also the mix used in the American music video wasn't the single version of StrangeLove (like in Anton's video) but a shorter edit of the extended mix of StrangeLove called "Blind Mix" that was used in the american single released in 1988 in the U.S. Shep Pettibone remixed Behind The Wheel for the extended and the single version. Shep Pettibone was a very high profile remixer back then having remixed songs for Madonna, Paula Abdul or The Pet Shop Boys. Alan Wilder said he hated his mix but I quite like it actually.
Thanks for another fun video! The “See You” with chickens is from a German show called Bananas, which had some super-crazy videos for a number of songs. The real “See You” video is actually pretty sweet (if a bit corny)-it takes place in a Woolworths and was directed by Julien Temple . :) ETA, Martyn Atkins worked on “Strangelove 88”-it’s not the artistic vision of Anton but I’ve always loved it because the guys look great in it, to me.
Vaughn, you are so hilarious! And here I thought I was a knowledgeable DM fan but I wasn't even aware of these videos. Thank you for helping me get through the work day. Cheers!
Love both Strange and Strange Too. Bought them on the dinosaur VHS format back in the day. Still have them. Only if they had out a Strange Three with the videos from Songs of Faith and Devotion.
I was very young when I saw the Strange film on a VCR (god I'm old!🤣) Back then I didn't care about the visuals, now I think it's stunning and really Interesting. Great review once again.Thank you🌹
I bought Strange (and later Strange Too) and I watched it over and over and over. At this point in time, I was a 'super fan' (a term I actually hate) but, I wanted to watch, read, listen really anything and everything Mode and this VHS was so brilliant. For all my personal feelings about Anton Corbijn, I really loved this VHS (and loved Strange too as well). I love the split mix of Never Let Me Down Again! I agree, I don't really care for that version of Behind the wheel as much as the album version. I looked at the scene with Fletch as creepy for the record when I watched it originally hahaha! Oh, Sunday's video sounds awesome as well as Wednesday's! Cheers Vaughn and thank you for covering this Strange VHS :D
This was hilarious Vaughn. With Pimpf I always thought Martin was saying "Cold Beer", "Cold Beer". :). Also I never liked the Shep Pettibone remix of BTW. The album mix always suited Antons video.
Great video again Vaughn 👌. Keep them coming. These guys are worth their weight in gold. Anton really made a huge improvement to them and their music. He really contributed to the style and sound. The videos were different, but we're unique and we'll married to DM. Fletch couldn't offer anything. Wouldn't get much more other than a wave and clap👏👐. He is the master though. I'll never lose or forget how they ripped me to shreds in the 80s. Just need Alan🚨🚨🚨🤗
I'm pretty sure that the "hi-hat remix" of Behind the Wheel is only on the stand alone music video. The complete Strange series (the one I've found on vimeo, at least) has the proper album mix.
Thanks for your review. I bought that video in the 80s. As I try to think about it there was a second girl appearing inbetween of two videos. I can‘t remember. She said something about this old man. And that „he hasn’t got a clue“. Correct me If I am wrong. Unfortunately I don‘T have access to that VHS tape. But this tape was seen very often by me and my depeche friends. Cool memories.
The "continental" version of Strangelove used to get lots of airplay back in late '87 on MTV's 120 Minutes in the US. Never saw the more commercial version... then again, I moved to the UK in November of that year, so not sure what followed.
I got Strange Too on VHS in like 1992 or so, and I absolutely loved the aesthetics from the first time I watched it. Always annoyed me that I was unable to find Strange anywhere - it (and 101) seemed to be completely unavailable to purchase in my country at that time. This was not ideal for a super fan trying to get all official DM releases. My favourite part on both releases is the Enjoy The Silence/Clean/Halo sequence on Strange Too. Brilliant stuff.
I heard / read somewhere that Alan stayed behind in that first Anton video to do some more shots for him. The rest of the band buggered off to a club or dinner or something. Yet again, Alan put in more effort than the others....
i know the girl at the beginning is Anton's lady and that they are still together. Flash slightly forward to the iconic Enjoy the Silence video and it shows kind of what Anton does that I love...he finds a simple iconic image (including fonts) and makes it work in a simple way that expands in your head as opposed to crazy complex visuals. Cheers Vaughn! Great video again!
No, the woman in the Strangelove video is Nassim Khalifa, his previous wife. They were together up until 2005 or something like that. Now he's with Nimi Ponnudurai, for 10 years.
Hey Vaughn... Nice video as usual. Anton has been (is) very important in DM's life. He gave them the image they needed. As you say, it truly matched their music. Therefore it gave them a real credibility. Video clips were really important at that time. Did you know that Anton's girlfriend (at that time) appears in the Strangelove's clip ? I grew up with those vids so I didn't have you first opinion of them, but I get it... Those vids were so arty and ahead of their time. Anton has his own vision and feelings about DM's music and he wasn't trying to really match the words, but more the atmosphere of the song. Pimpf's clip is really great... keep in mind that "pimpf" is as german word that meant "youngest of the Hitler Youth".
The Pimpf video is brilliant, but then with such a strange (non single) track Anton could do what he liked anyway! I think the second Strangelove video was done to accompany the remixed Strangelove 88 single, maybe the original video didn't fit. I quite like the second video, I suspect it was pretty cheap as well, seeing that it was all filmed at the University of London's Senate House building, although visually it matches the Black Celebration cover better than the MOTM style!
Hi Vaughn - loving these videos, the behind the wheel remix on the 12 inch was done by Shep Pettibone and I believe that the 7 inch was also done by Shep Pettibone. Anton is very good at what he does but I think that in the Devotional Tour he fell short and did not capture the power of that tour .....
It's always interesting to hear your opinion. I have to admit, I never liked not even one video of Anton. I do respect he is an excellent artist. That he doesn't touch my soul, is unfortunately my personal taste. I felt better, when I was 14, watching videos like Everything Counts 🙈😂 For me, Anton made ONE masterpiece, that was the Devotional Tour.
@@VaughnGeorge Hi. I hope you're having a great weekend? Ooh do I really have to tell you 😂 Its not the main Strangelove video, it's the other one, and to give you a clue, 🤫 I feel sorry for Alan, I honestly believe it was edited and left in on purpose, I'm sure you Must have seen that part before, even though it's only there for a couple of seconds. Let me know if you can see it too 😆
Totally agree with your opinion of Anton's positive influence on the visual perception of DM at that time. I really love these videos and the whole athmosphere in it. But what I also have to say is, that Anton's sleeve design since Exciter is absolute BS and looks like he's tired of it. BTW..Can you please make an investigative video that explores the theory of conspiracy that there is a direct connection between Martin's move from dreary England to sunny California and his dental correction to his songwriting. :D
@@VaughnGeorge The first time I saw the video Behind the wheel in the remix version was in the mid-90s, and then, for some reason, I liked it more than the album version. But after a while, I realized that the album version is much better. There is something alien about the remix version.
Nice vid Vaughn. I never get the "don't use hi-hats" comment because they do use them, so when exactly did they not? Was it a specific album? I definitely hear it on at least 3 songs on this one. That said, I just about pi$$ed myself at the sound FX used for Fletch's headbut! Hilarious. So he doesn't just clap!
Vaughn George Cool 👍🏻 The reason I ask is that I’m wondering what the highest resolution it could be re-released in. Would kill for a 4K (or even 8K) release some day.

My understanding, the other StrangeLove video, where Dave’s dressed in white, was a version they did for MTV. It was less sexualized. But agree, it was a bad version.
I prefer the original Strangelove video and version because it has more energy, I wish we would've gotten to see more of Dave's leather pants in the original video

@@trickievt no , I give up... please spill the beans 🎹👍😎
@@VaughnGeorge Oh come on! Have you actually watched it again, and again? Lol 😂
Interview Cosey Fan Tutti and Chris Carter, please
I may be wrong, but in "Strange" - Behind The Wheel song is not a remix.
Yes you may be right, it was just a different version but was it done by the band or some other producer ? VG :-)
@@VaughnGeorge I think, it's the same version like in album.
@@VaughnGeorge The first time I saw the video Behind the wheel in the remix version was in the mid-90s, and then, for some reason, I liked it more than the album version. But after a while, I realized that the album version is much better. There is something alien about the remix version.
Shep Pettibone did the remix for the single. There is a video for that version too but the one included on Strange is indeed the album version.
Alexander Dymov is right. I got the VHS and it is the album version used in the music video.
Why have you put the Centronics connector on the emax there ?
Andrew hi!! It has been modified to it can connect to a Zip drive.
You still need to work a bit more on the AQOT riff, Vaughn! 😉
This is a discussion video , NOT a performance !! VG :-)
Hi Ian , Never let me down again has no hi-hats in it from what I can tell. VG :-)
@@VaughnGeorge oh, I thought it was a case of the entire album. 👍
What version is the song intro?
I did that myself, you can hear the full version here : ruclips.net/video/t-x1g46kQ1U/видео.html
Vaughn George thank you sounds fantastic
*BMW Isetta (3 wheel car)
Vaughn George Do you know what format and camera Devotional was shot on?
I am not sure but its worth me finding out for my reviews!! Cheers!! VG :-)
Vaughn George Cool 👍🏻 The reason I ask is that I’m wondering what the highest resolution it could be re-released in. Would kill for a 4K (or even 8K) release some day.
I remember buying Strange and Strange too. Think I've still got them? Weren't out for long in the shops.
The three wheeler is called an Isetta.
Cheers for that Ian!! VG :-)
The car is a BMW Isetta
Thank you !! A very non-luxurious looking BMW!! VG :-)
@@VaughnGeorge it is post-war BMW like VW Beatle or VW Bullik
@@VaughnGeorge It was BMW's 2nd car. BMW started building cars in 1952 with the BMW 501 and then continue in 1955 with this roller skate for elefants! :)
