The torp was mostly discarded in favor of the drop punt because the drop punt was more reliable for set shots. But nobody can kick drop punts straight anymore so it's time to BRING BACK THE TORP!
Yes I agree, less hand balls, kick straight out of the centre in the fifty, two kicks and its a goal,I wish afl should stop making new rules, you can't evan physically hurt opposition, Well that's my 2 cents worth
Yeah dunno why coaches don’t train on it. When I was playing in under 17’s we had a challenge to kick a goal from the boundary at the 50m line and the coach wouldn’t let me have it because I went the torp. If you can control it it can be pretty accurate... better shot at a goal than kicking to a pack
GO THE TORP.......SENSATIONAL! My top 3.... 1. Fletch running torp went 80m 2. Rocco standing torp goal post height! 3. Byron Picket from 1 step torp on the angle. ALL TORPS !

Anthony Rocca kicked a longer torp, at Etihad Stadium, as it was known then in 2016, from 15mtrs inside the centre square, during one of those E.J.Whitten Legend games. I think it was measured at around 85mtrs.
To truly honour the best long goals since mid 70’s, whether they be torp’s or drop punts, you’d need at least a 2hr video. And then another 1hr video for the best snap shots & freaky type goals.
i was there in 07 v freo when Ladey kicked that monster, in the freo supporters end up in the stands and went mental in front of their supporters, that goal turned the game and we ended up winning.
Just incredible how some of those balls leave the boot at just such an unexected angle. Goes to show how the torp is so underused in today's game, even as a last ditch effort.
I don't understand why this isn't used more today.. So many teams chip it around and then end up kicking it to the pack in front of the goal square. It so rarely ends in a goal. So go the torp sometimes to clear the pack, or at worst create a chaos ball that's harder to defend
Hmmmm. No Malcolm Blight after the siren at North Melbourne... but does include a Collingwood kick from inside the 50 that went ‘four rows back’. That would be about 60m in total.
I did think of Blight's kick. Totally legendary, but it was back in the days of the VFL, so technically not in the AFL. That kick happened 45 years ago, just to make us all feel like bloody fossils!
Worth watching tho 👉🏼 ruclips.net/video/MyppV6iYojQ/видео.html (he was outside the square when kicking but travelled into the crowd so probs not as far as Fletcher's who was inside by a long way and also travelled far into the crowd)

@@itookallthenames Thanks for the clarification from a Victorian perspective mate. I'm an old West Aussie and we never called it a barrel. Not sure what the South Aussies and Taswegians call it. Maybe we can ge a poll lol.
The few who do attempt a screw punt shot after the siren, almost always miss badly. It's a lost skill because coaches demand that players always use their most accurate kick - the drop punt. In the quest for victory, a momentary thrill isn't on the agenda.
What happened to Geelong player David Wojcinski's two running goals from inside the centre square in round 4 2011? Both kicks went 50 metres or perhaps longer.
I think the "socially active" and "ultra politically correct" AFL have instructed the current commentators to refer to the "torpedo" as a "barrel" - what total BS - it always has been the "torpedo punt" or the "torp". Warmed the cockles of my heart to hear this magnificent kick as "going the torp". It's a difficult kick to master - but the distance it gets when done correctly is fantastic.
Richard Benny yes that was the best goal kicked from behind center bounce, at waverly, back in the day i was 16 yrs old, and when i saw this i could not stop talking about this at school the following week, haha Go Saints.
At Footy park Port v Hawthorn . Stuart Dew in defence takes a mark on Hawks 50m . A bloke yells out " Kick a Goal Son " Everyone heard it and laughed . After Dew sent it to the forward lines he looked into the crowd and gave a nod
65 metres out, 10 metres inside the square, and landed 6 rows back. The Blight goal not there. Fletcher kicked many like that, and Sav Rocca had many more as well. But they had goals that bounced 15 metres short and rolled through.
Fletcher's went the furthest, he was well inside the square and it also travelled into the crowd easily 4-5 rows back. More than Blights probs the same as Jeff Fehrings's
Yeah his was my favourite. But he was on the run which does give him a bit more momentum and help with getting a bit more distance, as opposed from off a step or set shot. Though they are harder to pull off on the run and still be accurate which does makes it really impressive.
Jayden Hunt kicked one from over 60 out about 18 months before this video was made. Have you chosen not to show it because he kicked it against the Crows?
@@paulgill2042 I stand corrected. It was on the right forward flank roughly where a line from the junction of the square diagonally to the boundary would be.

Byron Pickett kicks the ball less then five metres outside the 50 metre arc. The ball clears the goal line by a couple of metres and the commentator claims the 55 metre kick travelled 65 metres. A long bomb is a goal kicked from the centre of the ground, which I have seen numerous times on Victorian grounds as well as with the longer Western Australian Grounds. Greats like Billy Barrett and Barry Cable would regularly kick the ball over 75 metres. West Aussie fullbacks Brian Sarre and Graham Ramshaw could kick over 85 metres. These days a ball kicked more than 40 meters is a long bomb.
The ones where there is no run-up are next level, like Byron Pickett. No time to move or generate power, just put your boot through it.
