I used to wear these as actual tennis shoes (shoes my age), and it's great to see that they've stood the test of time for their classic looks. I'd get a couple months of wear at most while playing regularly, which was their original purpose, and they did it really well. Thanks for another excellent video!
Please do the Stan Smith Recon. They’re the “premium” version of Stan Smith and claimed to have all leather build. I really doubt that they have better value though, since they’re like $120 which is 50% more than the standard ones.
I have a pair and I can assure you they are a 100% more premium! It’s absolutely 100% leather, everything you see and touch is leather. It’s no veg tan of course but super soft and good quality shoe leather! Also the Box you get with them is like a Gucci Box or so, super high quality and you really just want to put them on your shelve! I’ve had them for about 2,5 years already! They didn’t wear out at all and if you clean them once every while you will have them for years! And ive not always cared about them while wearing too much! I would buy them again immediately especially when they are on sale like I got mine for 110€ (otherwise 180€) If you like the really classic Stan smith shape and don’t want to spend like 400 bucks on some Italian shoes, go for them they are great!
I agree, my pair is a special edition and has full leather build, no rolled edges, full leather interior. Very nice pair and has held up very well over 3 years for a $120 shoe.
Would LOVE to see the Reebok Club C 85 next. Price point around 70 and I have been impressed by their durability. The “vintage version” on their site is $5 more and I’d be curious to see why
Bought a pair of Stan Smiths when I was in high school (late 90s). Those shoes lasted 20 years and broke in like a dream. Guessing the leather was much higher quality than what they use now.
They probably flipped them so they could just cut out one shape and flip it one way or the other depending on whether it goes in the left or right shoe
I really hope that left/right sole thing is a manufacturing trick, because that's a brilliant way to reduce manufacturing costs. Honestly the manufacturing engineer who had that idea did a great job.
I have a pair of Stan Smith’s from 2008 that seem sturdier, wider, and overall better quality than the new pair I picked up a couple years ago. It could be cool to find pairs from different decades and cut them in half and see how construction, quality, and manufacturing has changed. Cool videos man. Nice work.
I have one pair of brown ones from early 2000s, I am sure they are all leather, I used them for garage&garden work until nowadays. They are still in one piece. The same happened with superstars, old ones where indestructible, today they last one or two years, I had like 6 pairs of them.
I think I've had three pairs of these in my life, going back to the eighties -- always the ones with the green heel tabs. There are two solid classic adidas designs in tennis shoes. The Stan Smiths and the Rod Lavers. As much as I understand the white sneaker trend (they look great), the green accents on the Smiths and Lavers are the distinctive markers. Seeing this shoe without the green was weird. Anyhoo, I'm glad you carved these up. Always wondered what they were like inside. The way that smiths wear in and develop stretch and gray patina has always been charming for me. Love this shoe, love the channel. Keep doing what you're doing!
It's very smart what they've done with the insole: they make it only for the right shoe, then flip it upside down for the left shoe. I guess they save money.
Stans have been a vey pleasant surprise. My wife got them for me about 3 years ago and honestly, they look almost brand new even though they are my go to pair when going pretty much everywhere. Just a deep clean with a tooth brush and a dump in the washing machine once a year and they go back to new. I haven’t have any problems with uneven pressure on the heels so far. Amazing value for money
I have had these shoes for the past 4 and a half years and I‘ve worn them a lot, not every day but at least two or three times a week. I‘m suprised to hear that these shoes aren‘t supposed to last long and that the heel is supposed to wear down in a weird way. I can‘t confirm that at all. Yes, they are pretty worn out by now and yes they are not really white anymore and got a lot of scratches, but until this day they‘re my must have shoe on every city trip where I know I‘ll be walking a lot. I love those kind of videos though, always interesting to see what‘s inside!😊

If you use them for tennis on asphalt, then the soles at the toes wear down long before the upper of the shoe breaks apart. They are a reasonably priced sneaker that is comfortable & like most things doesn't last very long. Thanks for chopping it in half.
Thanks for this cut in half. I was bummed to see how crappy the sole was, but having had a couple of pairs of Stan’s the leather breaks down before the sole. A real pain to keep clean too. But for the price here in Australia they’re cheap enough to replace.

Great review, and really fun to see what is inside. But I think the Stan Smith they make today, is not the same as many years ago. I have a pair with blue highlights, and they have lasted forever. I can't speak to the more expensive shoes, because I've never worn them, but my last pair of Stans lasted three years of daily use, and I'm a 270 lb man who walks as a primary means of transportation. I also never had any problem with high and low spots in the heel, but that is where it eventually wore through into the cells inside. Over all though, for being a third to a fifth the price of the others, and the originator of the style, the Stan Smith is going to remain my go to sneaker I think.
My Adidas by Run DMC is about the Superstar, a former basket ball shoe, available in many colours. With most times white rubber caps that are black on some black examples of the Superstar.
ECCO Shoes please There are some models made from leather and waterproof, and also with GORE-TEX® SURROUND technology which can breathable all around, even the soles of the feet. I think it's very interesting to be cut in half to see the inside of it
@@iainbeaton5524 Each type of waterproof system may be different, but the same purpose is to be waterproof and breathe well. But the Gore-Tex Surround is different that the soles can breathable
@@chawin007 that sounds good, I always found that Gore-Tex should never be put in footwear as when they enevitably get a tear in the lining, the boots/shoes get wet and take FOREVER to dry out. Your feet cook in the summer too. I would take the "Surround" technology with a pinch of salt too. I love Gore-Tex and have spent thousands on their groundbreaking new tech ie Shakedry but although better than the competitors, it doesn't live up to the advertising blurb and in my opinion should never be in footwear.
Those air chambers on the heel area wear out superfast 😂 on the new Stan Smith Lux... 3 months and had holes because the fround contact layer is sooo this 😢
Considering how the sole are build these shoes are suprisingly long lasting! Every pair of Stan Smith I owned were replaced after at least 6 years of almost daily use, just because the leather was crappy looking and couldn't be recovered that much. But the comfort? Always on point, I used them also on trips where I walked several km per day without the minimum discomfort. amazing!
It wouldn't really count as a minimalist white shoe but as part of the big name sneaker brands you should definetly do Reebok Club C. Would be nice to see how you think the leather quality compares to other big brands
I absolutely love your channel! I literally watch at least one of your videos every night. Can you please do a video on the Stanniversary edition stan smiths and figure out if they are made of leather or their new mushroom fake leather? Keep the excellent content coming!
Good video man. If you could, please cut in half one Adidas advantage base, and compare with the stan smiths, since they are alike and most of people compare them, i would like to know which one is best and more confortable.
Yes finally did the Stan Smiths! Thanks Weston! Interesting to see that the soles are not sound and the leather covered in plastic😳 Might look into the Koio afterall...
If it helps at all, I just wore through the heel of my last Stan Smiths after wearing them every day for three years. And I'm a very large person who walks several miles in a day. They're built different than the others, but they do definitely last
Bill McVey thanks yeah that helps. I just got another pair actually. Always apprehensive to wear new shoes but I wont be as precious about them. My previous ones lasted maybe 2 years as my everyday shoe so Im happy with its cost per wear. I just did a haul video on them on my channel. You should check them out!
nah. There are much better quality all leather sneakers with lower price. WTF people always defending all these huge brands with millions of revenue while all they are doing is cutting cost SMH. I guess thats why these brands are so huge. Marketing is a very powerful tool to brainwash people.
@@LSHD_ Stan Smiths are cheaply made, nowadays they're not even made out real leather, they use synthetic leather for the newer models and are overpriced for what you're getting. Reebok Club C, Nike Air Force 1, Van's Old Skool, Puma Suede give you more value for what you're paying in my opinion. The old Stan Smiths were great, today you're paying for brand name recognition to basically wear plastic shoes.
@@swordsaver that may be. But consumers aren’t interested in “value for money” in the terms you are describing. Their “value for money” is about the initial price point. Also Stan Smiths aren’t necessarily “over priced”. A pair here was purchased for under £45 with Adidas discount made it less. I highly doubt the others you’ve mentioned are “affordable quality”. Even then, there is the choice of consumers choice of design. Not all 35+ can rock a Nike Air Force, Vans, reeboks. Unless you’re of a particular demographic.
@@LSHD_ You do realize that Stan Smiths aren't exactly cheap in every location? They can cost upwards to $130 dollars Canadian where I live. The ones I mentioned are actually cheaper and more affordable than the Stan Smiths by a large margin except for Air Force 1. Why pay for a plastic shoe when you get get a better quality sneaker that's more affordable and has an initial cheaper price point else where that's actually real leather?
There is a line of Stan Smith with off-white color outsole instead of this type of white outsole, they are said to be the different version (tiny bit more expensive).
I recently bought the vegan Stan Smith, fx5502. Everything looks nice and clean. However, when I checked the left shoe tag inside the tounge, it's made in Indonesia. While the right shoe is made in India. I contacted Adidas in my country (Philippines) and they said it's just tagging and inventory. They asked me about the quality, and I said the left and right shoe looks perfectly fine. Lastly, the left shoe has some minor dents and Adidas told me that it's just normal. I still have 30 days to decide if I will send back the shoe for a 100% refund.
Can you do an updated Stan Smith CUT IN HALF video? I think they changed the material for the new ones. It would be great to have a comparison between the old and new versions as well.
I’ve never had a regular pair but got a pair of the winterized ones in 2020 and I love them. Sole has held up great and l love the smooth suede upper. They have always been worn in rotation though with boots and other sneakers and since they have fleece lining, they are seasonal, so not worn every day. I imagine if they were the sole would have degraded much quicker.
Loved the video but when you say they might not last as long, I've had a couple of pairs of Stan Smith's and both pairs have lasted well over a year with me wearing them everyday near enough for 5-8 hours a day. Even then the only issue was the shows not looking great, I never really cleaned them and the sole started to come away from the uppers, which could be fixed easily. So I say the last a good while, especially for the price
Couple points I would like to add. The leather might be a top grain but it is also still likely a split, likely the grain was taken off for other uses that that require a thinner full grain leather leaving behind a bit of the grain for this leather. As well on the insoles they are likely punched out by the same punch then just flipped over for the other foot.
There are different varieties of Stan Smith. I bought a pair with a leather tongue and leather lined rear part of the shoe. Their price tag was closer to a hundred bucks though.
as of 2023, all Stan Smith not "premium" version get a downgrade to plastic leather. I got a pair with velcro strap, they make squeaky sound everytimes i walk. i miss the 90s All Smith
It's a shame they are made with 100% plastic now, even though they were already cutting corners on the shoe for a long time. I'd love a pair of Stans that could last a few years rather than a few months, guess I gotta go to Oliver Cabell for that now

Thanks for the video. Can you test the primegreen version?
I can't speak to the more expensive shoes, because I've never worn them, but my last pair of Stans lasted three years of daily use, and I'm a 270 lb man who walks as a primary means of transportation. I also never had any problem with high and low spots in the heel, but that is where it eventually wore through into the cells inside. Over all though, for being a third to a fifth the price of the others, and the originator of the style, the Stan Smith is going to remain my go to sneaker I think.
Would love to see a followup with the higher end Stan Smiths like the Lux Stan Smiths or Recon Stan Smiths
Would be great if you revisited the stan smiths and reviewed the new 'stan smith 80s' that are more like they used to be made like
My Adidas by Run DMC is about the Superstar, a former basket ball shoe, available in many colours. With most times white rubber caps that are black on some black examples of the Superstar.
ECCO Shoes please
There are some models made from leather and waterproof, and also with GORE-TEX® SURROUND technology which can breathable all around, even the soles of the feet. I think it's very interesting to be cut in half to see the inside of it
An episode on Ecco would be great!
ive got a pair of ECCO BIOM HIKE boots made of YAK leather. No gore-tex but still waterproof.
I think it'd be great if you did a video ranking the sneakers you've analysed in terms of the quality of their leather and components!
hey man. do you own a pair of Stan Smiths?
So close to having the code be "LEATHERDADDY". I'm disappointed.
Haha he should have that the code for every sponsorship he gets
Change it to SKINFATHER when Halloween rolls around
I just got my first pair of Stans yesterday. Got the leather lined recon model. I’m liking them so far.
I bought a pair of these a couple years ago for $30 bucks at a factory store
yeah it sell around 30... since the 80's
Would be nice to see how you think the leather quality compares to other big brands
would love to see the reebok classics or the club c’s on this channel
Yes!
I have the Montana cans edition club c and i love them so much ,
did he already do these sneakers? Cant find...
I absolutely love your channel! I literally watch at least one of your videos every night. Can you please do a video on the Stanniversary edition stan smiths and figure out if they are made of leather or their new mushroom fake leather? Keep the excellent content coming!
Do the adidas superstar, there's a partially synthetic version and one where it's all leather
Good video man. If you could, please cut in half one Adidas advantage base, and compare with the stan smiths, since they are alike and most of people compare them, i would like to know which one is best and more confortable.
I'm almost always amazed at how thin the outer soles of shoes are. Most things we have now are so cheaply made :(
I have worn the part of the plastic out on mine. As to the comfort, I find them very comfortable after painfully breaking them in haha
I'd love to see some more ethically/ecologically produced shoes like Veja brand.
They're built different than the others, but they do definitely last
For $80, it’s totally worth it.
Bill McVey thanks yeah that helps. I just got another pair actually. Always apprehensive to wear new shoes but I wont be as precious about them. My previous ones lasted maybe 2 years as my everyday shoe so Im
happy with its cost per wear.
I just did a haul video on them on my channel. You should check them out!
@@JRSPARTY Those Gold Stans are wicked. I recently grabbed a pair of bright red ones that I really like.
Can’t beat Stan Smiths from a price/quality perspective. It is a true classic. From kids to adults of all ages.
Thanks for doing this review.
nah. There are much better quality all leather sneakers with lower price. WTF people always defending all these huge brands with millions of revenue while all they are doing is cutting cost SMH. I guess thats why these brands are so huge. Marketing is a very powerful tool to brainwash people.
@@ggh_-ts6pn “There are much better quality all leather sneakers with lower price” Care to share a few names?
So did you ever get that refund?
@@ryanmcclosky3312 hi, I decided to keep my Stan Smith.
thank you so much, i've been waiting for a video on stan smiths for a long time. Would also like to see a vid on Camper shoes.
Leatherdad this episode and split outsole in the last. You’re a lil freak Weston.😏😂
Can you do an updated Stan Smith CUT IN HALF video? I think they changed the material for the new ones. It would be great to have a comparison between the old and new versions as well.
Do Golden Goose!!! I’m positive they are pure hype and no quality
Thanks for the plug mang!

Almost like they grew up together

Anyone else come here looking for “leatherdad” comments?
I would love to see the all white leather Converse
Think he already did the converse?
That knife cuts through everything
Seriously when I first started watching I was thinking it was going to be inadequate to cut shoes. Wrong.
Finally the one I’ve been waiting for
I’ve never had a regular pair but got a pair of the winterized ones in 2020 and I love them. Sole has held up great and l love the smooth suede upper. They have always been worn in rotation though with boots and other sneakers and since they have fleece lining, they are seasonal, so not worn every day. I imagine if they were the sole would have degraded much quicker.
I'd rather pay 50 bucks for Stan Smiths on discount than 500 for Common Projects. For the comfort, I got the boost version.
True
do you like to rock the Stans or Common Projects barefoot?
Loved the video but when you say they might not last as long, I've had a couple of pairs of Stan Smith's and both pairs have lasted well over a year with me wearing them everyday near enough for 5-8 hours a day. Even then the only issue was the shows not looking great, I never really cleaned them and the sole started to come away from the uppers, which could be fixed easily. So I say the last a good while, especially for the price
“Leather dad”?
Did Tobias Fünke come up with that name?
I genuinely appreciate that you do the whole weather man charade thing with the leather grain guide
Do Oliver Cabell Low 1 please!!!
80 for this is more OK than 350+ for "premium" shoes
I'm sure 4 of these last longer than 1 "premium" shoe
Joshua Chen I’m sure 1 of these last longer than 1 premium
Hey, can you cut open Vessi shoes soon?
Watching you try to keep a straight face when saying the sale code, "LeatherDad".😂😂😂
Could you do this to the Greats Royale sneaker?
It's a shame they are made with 100% plastic now, even though they were already cutting corners on the shoe for a long time. I'd love a pair of Stans that could last a few years rather than a few months, guess I gotta go to Oliver Cabell for that now
