Hello good morning, I have a question I’m hoping you will be able to answer.. will applying for a Jamaican passport effect your citizenship with the UK? I am uk born and would like to apply for a Jamaican passport. Somewhere along the lines I was given some information that I would have to relinquish my uk citizenship to hold a Jamaican passport. Do you know anything about this subject or will I have to go to the embassy for further guidance? Thanks C.
Hmm you know im not sure. So many people have mentioned this, and while its probably not hard to get them signed by your bank or gp etc I dont ever remember anything telling me I needed to have that done and nobody asked me when I was to the commission in London
I feel like I know the answer considering that you didn't mention it, but does this also apply to people who are the great grandchildren of a Jamaican citizen?
Not directly. If your grandparents were born elsewhere then theyd have to apply for JA citizenship and passport or great grandchilds parents would have to apply via descrnt from their grandparents.
@@RiazPhillips Well that's a bit of a fork in the road lol. My great grandfather migrated to Central America from JA, and my gma was born in Guatemala. Unfortunately, she has passed tho. I was told that when she was younger my great grandfather took her back to JA to teach her english. Maybe she ended up getting dual citizenship at one point? Idk. I'll look into it lol. I was only asking for future reference really. I'm still in college in the US and can't really afford to apply for all that yet. My Uncle, through marriage, is from JA tho and he's told me before that I should consider getting dual citizenship. My fam and I plan on going to JA (it was supposed to be this summer, but yk Coronavirus lol), and I've recently really wanted to explore Ghana so now my mind's been on the dual citizenship idea. Thank you for the info though! Very much appreciated and I love your content! Especially the Ghana x Jamaica comparison. It reminded me of a convo I had with some Ghanaian and Nigerian friends about the similarities between pidgin and patois, and it reaffirmed my pride as a descendant of Queen Nanny 🇯🇲🇬🇭
Thank you for the information! What if your parents and/or grandparent who is in fact Jamaican but they’re deceased, you have no access to their documents or your Jamaican and grew up in the system? That’s a tough one for me. Both my husband and I are Jamaican and he grew up in foster homes and my grandfather is deceased and both of our parents were born in the states but we don’t have access to any documents showing proof ON PAPER we’re Jamaican.. I’ve researched online and there’s nothing answering that part cause not everyone have parents.
Foster care in which country? The US? I think if you have documentation that you grew up in foster care the embassy would listen to you as a special case. Youd have to call your local embassy and talk to them.
Hey! Thank you so much for all the info. When you apply for your citizenship/passport did you have to get your passport photos signed by a doctor, lawyer, JoP etc.? Also did they have any requirements for how the picture had to be taken? Thank you
I didnt have my photos signed and they never checked. The photos had to be proper photobooth photos if you are in London there is a place not to far from the Kensington Embassy that has a photobooth that they accept
Correction..you only need your mother or fathers birth from jamaica 🇯🇲 no passport needed I have done this through my mothers names as she is on my UK birth certificate that’s how I got mine Jamaica citizenship that’s if someone is really struggling

You forgot to mention if you’re planning on applying for citizenship in Jamaica you’ll need a notary for your passport size photos and and another notary for your application. To get a notary you’ll need to know someone in in Jamaica to get it.
No. Embassy officers can authorize. I didnt have anyone in JA do anything for my application and neither did anyone in my family but thanks I will add it to the notes
The lineage doesn't reflect if your parent of grandparents were born in JA. Just as long as they are a citizen, that is good enough. So the generations after you must keep registering as a ja citizen so the generations after you can maintain being Jamaican.
I have no record of my parents or grandparents information. They are all deceased. I only have whatever paperwork my mother gave to customs when I came to America. I have no information about anything and would like to know how to get back home. Feeling lost and homesick!!
if the paperwork your mother gave has her Birthdate and information (or you can find that out some how) you may be able to use that to find her birth certificate with the Jamaican RGD. Thats the only thing I can think of

Hi everyone I have a question. My grandmother came here when she was a child during the Windrush Era, she was born in Jamaica and has a Jamaican birth certificate. She has a British passport now but we are unable to find the Jamaican passport as it was so long ago. Can I use her British one in application process or any ideas on how I could proceed? Many thanks!
My dad died 4 years ago, and I could not find his JA passport from when he arrived in the UK. I applied for JA citizenship and passport earlier this year via High Commission, and they were happy just to accept his birth certificate on its own. Your grandmother's UK passport should state her place of birth, so I guess this is acceptable.
If you're British, your JA parent's name can be added to your birth certificate. As an adult, this will be in the form of a note added to the original register, which will be copied to a new birth certificate. However, you (or parent if they are living) will have to supply official documentation that proves that they are your parent (contact the registry office for further advice.) The service will cost you £90 for the change plus the cost of a new birth certificate.
I’m looking to get one…my Dad was born in Kingston but my dad passed away after going back to visit so he was buried there when I was toddler it was really hard to get in touch with the government agency to get death certificate in the USA from the west coast. I’ll have to get his sister my aunt to be able to get his birth certificate. I rather just go there and pick it up. He is on my birth certificate.

So you can get married and submit the citizenship application along with marriage certificate right away, but it will be approved/denied (decided) in only 24 months😵
Mine took maybe 5 weeks but that was before Covid happened so the queues werent as long. I heard it can take months but I've never heard it taking 24 months
Thank you 🖤👑🙏🏾
Such a useful video, thankyou very much ...so can I confirm- do you have dual citizenship now, and you did not need to relinquish UK citizenship?
ha no of course you dont have to give up which ever citizenship you had first. Still have the UK passport etc
@@RiazPhillips thankyou...also- I've looked on the High Commission website and I'm still not 100% clear...do the High Commission staff act as certifiers for your photos, hence them not needing to be signed by a listed professionals before presenting them?
Hello good morning, I have a question I’m hoping you will be able to answer.. will applying for a Jamaican passport effect your citizenship with the UK? I am uk born and would like to apply for a Jamaican passport. Somewhere along the lines I was given some information that I would have to relinquish my uk citizenship to hold a Jamaican passport. Do you know anything about this subject or will I have to go to the embassy for further guidance? Thanks C.
Charlotte williams none of that information is true at all. You will hold both passports and citizenship and neither is affected in any way
Riri Travels thank you
I was born in Jamaica and my mum is Jamaican - Do I need just my birth certificate or would I need my mum's as well?
Just yours
@@RiazPhillips you’re a star mate cheers
So you can tell me who Tacky is?
Thanks for this video, just about to start my journey too. Just a quick question. Do you need the photographs countersigned by anybody?
Hmm you know im not sure. So many people have mentioned this, and while its probably not hard to get them signed by your bank or gp etc I dont ever remember anything telling me I needed to have that done and nobody asked me when I was to the commission in London
Great info man keep up the good work.
Appreciate it!
Great informative video 👍🏾 how long did it take to receive the approval of citizenship and the passport?
only took mine 1 month
@@RiazPhillips okay kool 👍🏾
Can be quicker if pay expedite service (up to 15 working days)
You will need the original copy so they can verify it. Which embassy are you going to.?
@@RiazPhillips Max Speilmann do them too.
What if my Grandmother is deceased and my dad? Do I still need my dad's passport.
Hi - Did you have to get your passport photos certified by a doctor? And did you have to get your application form certified? Thank you!
I didnt get my photos signed. They never checked. The application form I think I must have went to my local Bank to do that
Do you know if you can apply with a parents death certificate instead of a birth certificate?
Correction..you only need your mother or fathers birth from jamaica 🇯🇲 no passport needed I have done this through my mothers names as she is on my UK birth certificate that’s how I got mine Jamaica citizenship that’s if someone is really struggling
Ok cool. That wasnt the case when I made this, they must have changed some things
My dad is a British born Jamaican but doesn’t have a Jamaican passport or citizenship there. I was wondering if I’m able to apply using my Grandmas birth certificate? She passed away back in 2020, would I still be able to apply just using her birth certificate?
@@T2G24 as long as either you mother or father names is on your UK birthday certificate then get a Jamaican copy of your grandma’s certificate from Jamaica & also her death certificate then you are fine with these documents you don’t need the passports they just want to see the link via birth certificates..hope this helps 👍🏽
@@TheRochester thank you! My uncle just sent me a photo of her death certificate but he only had a copy so I’m going to use the details to apply for her birth certificate and her death certificate. I’m going to call the Jamaican embassy to double check if I need both of just the one, appreciate your help!
@@T2G24 you will need the original copy which embassy are you going to
Could you use your great grandparents Jamaican passports ?
You forgot to mention if you’re planning on applying for citizenship in Jamaica you’ll need a notary for your passport size photos and and another notary for your application. To get a notary you’ll need to know someone in in Jamaica to get it.
No. Embassy officers can authorize. I didnt have anyone in JA do anything for my application and neither did anyone in my family but thanks I will add it to the notes
you can do it with one brith Certificate
My mum has a british passport but a jamaican birth certificate, do i still need to take her passport?
No
The lineage doesn't reflect if your parent of grandparents were born in JA.
I had my green card and am now an American citizen. Do you think immigration would have my parents birth information on my paperwork? I’m trying to get back to JA and reclaim my citizenship. I have no information about anything and would like to know how to get back home. Feeling lost and homesick!!
if the paperwork your mother gave has her Birthdate and information (or you can find that out some how) you may be able to use that to find her birth certificate with the Jamaican RGD. Thats the only thing I can think of
Riri Travels I went online to us citizenship website and filled out paperwork to get a copy of my entry paperwork. That should have details on it.
@@dawn1176 I think all you need to do is just apply for your Jamacia Birth certificate from the website above. That is all you would need. to get a Passport.
How did you get on with this?
Great content
Thank you
When you went to Ghana with your JA passport. Did you fly from the Uk?
Yes
Big up for the video ...Do you know if you can just turn up at HC with all required bits or do i have to book an appoinment
and who did you get to sign your photo's if you dont mind me asking :)
I dont think you can book. You go to the HC, get a ticket and wait in the queue. Also. I didn’t have my pictures signed and dont recall it being asked and nobody mentioned it
@@RiazPhillips oh wow, thanks for finding the time to reply .... gonna give it a shot #respect
@@RiazPhillips you have to book an appoinment now usually takes a couple weeks..probraly since covid #just an update
I have no ties but want to get a Jamaican Passport. Anyone willing to claim me?
You're funny.
Marry a Jamaican is your only way in...
Not sure if I missed this in the vid, but do you need all passports and birth certificates physically? or are authenticated copy's ok?
Original documents needed no copies allowed
Hi, do you need your passport photo’s signed when applying?
yes you do need it sign they can do it in the consul
I didnt and neither did my friend but I guess it depends on which officer you get
Jamaicans now have visa-free access to Russia which even most wealthy western nations don't have.
Russia wasnt on my list ha! but maybe I have to check it now!
First I want to thank you for this informative video. My mother was born in Jamaica, but she doesn't have a Jamaican passport. Is there a workaround to that?
Does she have a birth certificate? If not and you know the year and hospital she was born at you an apply for her birth certificate and then apply for her passport that way.
Alternatively you might be able to apply for yourself with just her Birth certificate.
Thank you
@@RiazPhillips Yes she has one. I'm going to apply for it.
You will need her Jamaican passport and Birth certificate, but contact your closest embassy and check their website if you have questions
@@JamesSmith-ql3ji she only needs one document passport or birth certificate is enough u don't need 2
Thank you!

I have my mom’s passport, but not birth certificate. How can I obtain that?
Do you have any advice if your Jamaican parent isn’t on your birth certificate? Thanks
Hi. Please can you link the website to apply. Thanks
Hi there! all links are now provided in the description!
Will they accept a copy of your parent's birth certificate? Or does it have to be the original?
I think either might be fine but you’ll have to double check with your embassy
I’m looking to get one…my Dad was born in Kingston but my dad passed away after going back to visit so he was buried there when I was toddler it was really hard to get in touch with the government agency to get death certificate in the USA from the west coast. I’ll have to get his sister my aunt to be able to get his birth certificate. I rather just go there and pick it up. He is on my birth certificate.
Hi there, I had to get my Grandads JA Birth certificates (Born in the 1930s) and I was all the way in London, UK when I applied (online) and it was the easiest thing ever. They responded in two days. The only thing is yes, It was very expensive to post to UK so I waited til I was going to JA and picked up the certificate myself
Do they countersign your passport photos at the consulate office ??
Yes they did for me at the London uk office, if you apply to PICA offices in Jamaica you would need an official to sign beforehand
Apparently so, I think they liked me because my photos werent signed and they never mentioned it lol
