The food specialty " drob de miel" is not a national dish but is one of the main staples at Easter time. A national dish would include "sarmale cu mamaliga" sau "ciorba de perisoare". Just two things from a Romanian citizen: 1. While those superstitions, traditions and mystical beliefs do exist indeed they are far less important today, far less people practice them or even know about them than - say - a century ago. Mostly in remote rural areas. It's a bit annoying to me that many of the youtube videos that present this country focus so much on these magical elements of the local folklore, people who watch them might get the completely wrong idea that a typical Romanian is permanently preoccupied with these, or that if they ever visit this country they will witness those things. In fact there's little chance of any tourist ever seeing one of these ancient traditions, and even if they do get to see them, chances are, the village people are putting up a staged show for them and if the tourists weren't there, they would not bother with all that to be honest. 2. The pronunciation of every Romanian word in the video is badly butchered, don't try to imitate that :) If the words weren't also written on the screen I wouldn't even know what he was trying to say, it's so bad.

Romania is very rich in resources, of all kinds. It is very similar to an African country that owns diamond mines and yet its citizens are kept in poverty.
To me the best Romanian food, which I can't get anymore, was smoked pork muscle that's been preserved in pork lard. My grandma used to make it. She'd take a couple of pieces out, fry them and serve them to me with mamaliga and a nice simple veggie sauce we call tocanita de ceapa si ardei (just a bit of freshly picked onion, bellpeppers, tomatoes and parsley). I've never had better tasting pork
@@MrGiantWhat he calls “mamaliga” here is in fact polenta which is boiled maize made thicker and harder than porridge and served as replacement for fries or bread as a side to the “stew” called “tocanitza”.

Greetings from Romania, Mr. Giant. I'm living in Cluj, only one mile from that strange forest 'Baciu'. My wife saw 30 years ago, standing at the window, a UFO upon Baciu Forest. It stood few minutes moving slow around and it flied away, fast, in the sky.
Here's some equally and even more interesting facts about Romania: * Transylvania comes from the latin words, "Trans-silva" meaning, "trans-forest" or "cross-forest". * To answer one of your questions, during medieval times Romania (particularly Wallachia, Transylvania and part of Moldavia) was far more important as a barrier between the ottoman controlled eastern lands and Europe. For that reason no fewer than 2 Romanians are credited with saving Europe and one of them the whole world. One of them, many of you already know. Vladislava Basarab. Aka Vlad the Impaler. The other one is a much more interesting figure imo name Janos Hunyadi or Iancu de Hunedoara in Romanian. He was also the father of king Matthias Corvin. * Although the D-Day of the middle ages was fought in present day Serbia, not Romania, the defense was led by a Romanian. That again was Janos Hunyadi. It was the 1456 battle of Nandorfehervar. You may have never heard of it but you've probably heard of things relating to it. San Juan Capistrano was one of the leaders of the defense and the Victory was counted as a miracle in his canonization. The ringing of church bells at noon is a consequence of this battle. And despite being largely forgotten, it is believed that this battle decided the fate of the world. Also, it bears striking resemblance to the battle of Middle Earth in the lord of the rings and may have played an inspirational role. * There's a castle in Romania called Turnu Rosu which means "red tower". It has that name because; duting medieval times, it's defenders mixed the blood of fallen Ottoman troops into the mortar when they did repairs to the walls as a warning to leave them alone. The blood coloring in the mortar is visible to this day. Web search the name and you'll probably find pictures of it. * Sighisoara is considered the most well preserved medieval town in Europe. * Bran castle is located in Brasov (medieval Chronstadt or Cronstad) which was Transylvanian territory. Vlad the impaler never ruled Transylvania. He ruled Wallachia. So; despite all the Dracula's castle nonsense, there's very little to suggest Vlad the Impaler ever set foot in the castle and he almost certainly never controlled it. Other than MAYBE a brief detainment siege during his attack on Timpa hill. * Speaking of Dracula. Dracula is made up of "dracul" meaning dragon (draco in latin) symbolically while an "a" or "ya" at the end of the name means, "Jr". So Dracula means, "Dragon Jr." or "son of the dragon". So technically, Jason Scott Lee can be called Dracula. 😁
Actually 'dracul' means 'the devil' in romanian. 'Drac' translates to 'devil'. The 'ul' at the end of the word is what makes it from 'devil' to 'the devil' himself😂
@@gunengineering1338 they probably told you "Drac" comes from the latin word "draco" that in latin means dragon, and yes romanian is a latin language but we gave another meaning to the latin word, in fact we have no dragons in our culture...

You pinpointed the struggles of romania perfectly, as the border of europe there was never but now a time without war. Romania has 2 friends, the serbs and the black sea, all the other tried to invade.
1th of March! is the "Mărțișor" (not May as you mentioned)! ”Călușarii” are not at all ”a secret society”, they are a group of friesds that respect a tradition for New Year. And, actually, in Romania is a blasfemy if you do not recieved ”Călușari” if they are arround, but actually people beleave that if you receive their dance on New Year Eve , you are blessed! And sorry, the guy who made that video, did not care at all about the ”fonetics”! Sounds absolutly horible in Romanian language
There's some mistakes, like confusing 1 of May (Labour Day) with 1 of March, which is Mărțișor. There's also some bad prononciation on places and usual phrases. Sarmale is also a traditional food , in vine leaves or in fermented cabbage. Almost every family has it's own recipe. And the ear tingling it's not the most accurate word, it's whizzing or ringing in the ear. Tingling or itching of the nose is also a thing, and it means you're either get scolded or beaten.

you know that Count Dracula is actually a Romanian king who was called Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Dracul because during the confrontations with the Ottoman Empire he impaled around 20,000 Ottoman soldiers and traitors. I mean, a giant spear was inserted up his ass and out through his mouth. When the sultan saw a field full of so many men who were pierced with spears, he gave up the fight and returned to Turkey. This is where the legend of Dracula comes from
Sadly, lots of companies taking natural resources from Romania nowadays aren't even from Romania, but working through political leverage to take gold, wood and others outside of the country.

romanians and irish are united by some historical events when some proto-romanians, namely aromanian (greek and albanian from vlach origin - vallahia) when they went into a war campaign in ireland, some of them are still there. macedonians or aromanians are a greek tribe akin to sparta with vlachian influences. aromanians are found today in greece, albania, serbia, montenegro, romania, bulgaria, sicily, ireland and wherever they campaigned. the actual music that aromanians have is very similar with irish music in terms of tempo and how it sounds overall. from there the actual drob that resembles an irish food made in a similar manner, namely haggis.

Thank you for reacting to our country facts. About the battles you are right. Across the history manny armies tried to claim out country making thier own. For the strategic position and the reaches. Our ancestors fought bravely every time driving the invaders out. Even when they were outnumbered. This hasn't change today and manny try to claim parts of our country even today. Unlike then there is no one to fight now. But it still is a beautiful country and open to all tourists. We also have one of the oldes records of our ancestors being here like thousands of years back.
As a Romanian, I find it extremely fun that the narrator's pronunciation got some English words wrong and how every other Romanian names were so far off from how they should sound that even I wouldn't recognize them if heard! Buna pronounced "boonheaj" mean nothing lol... it sounds more like "boonah" and it's a short for Buna Ziua which means good day. just funny facts :)
First of all, the pronunciation of Romanian words and names is terrible. We have some other traditional dances like "the bear" and a mysterious one named "Călușarii". The latest is quite ancient and it's like a sacred dance for men. Nobody knows how old it is. The name of Romania doses not come from Rome. Actually we do not really know where the name came from. There are some theories. There are many misterios places in Romania. There is the Sarmizegetusa regia, the ex capital of Dacia, our ancestors. It's quite a large site. Other misterios places are in Buzău country. People disappeared there mysteriously. Very old divination places. Lots of "trovanți", the so called living rocks having strange shapes. They have some organic shapes, they grow and some move slowly. There are some beautiful monasteries.
something that we do not like as people, namely the fact that a certain ethnic group that does not belong to Romania go all over the globe and beg and shame us as Romanians, then we are pointed with the finger as if we are all the same as this ethnicity.
Also, a very good place to visit is the Salt mine from Turda..the largest salt mine in Europe of this kind..also, Deveselu rochet shield... is a very beautiful country, with lots of traditions and good food.. ❤
10:00 it is said that after Trajan conquered Dacia (current Romania) the entire empire celebrated 123 days and no one had to pay any taxes on those days. It is said that they had to build new carts and bridges to carry the gold and silver from the region to Rome because the Roman Empire did not expect that many treasures to be in the area. Even a king of this region moved a river and hid his treasures under the river bed and then reflowed the river course above it so no one would find it but the water made its way to it and it was discovered recently. Also, the oldest gold jewels made by man are in today's Bulgaria which is a Thracian race too as Dacians so who knows what they found :D . And by the way none of the pronunciations the guy teaches in this video are correct, only Da and Nu is correct :))
We certainly have a history MUCH OLDER THAN 2000 years... Our antiquity, that of the Getae and the Dacians, only ends with the Roman conquests, but stretches far behind them.
Our root ancestors goes back more than 2000 years, only thinking to getae and dacian period, BC, and all the ancient much older cultures like Cucuteni. What to say about the 35000 years old woman skull discovered in the Muierii's cave?
you can also find that kind of crooked forest in Poland, the forests were planted many years ago by carpenters building stylish furniture to construct curved pieces from a single piece of wood
In Romania we can own land, but we can not own the riches of the land. If you discover Coal or Oil on your land, the government will buy your land and sell the exploitations rights to private companies. Often, the land is bought at a fraction of what is worth, sadly.
10:13 if they find minerals on the property, they will just expropriate the owner, but before that the mafiosos buy that land for almost nothing (refusal is like a death sentence) then they sell it to the builders for huge amounts.
Romanians eat a lot of meat. Different pork dishes are associated with Christmas. Lamb dishes are associated with Easter. Drob is a meatloaf-y thing with a specific texture given by the organs used in making it. It can be nice, it can also get dry (given the fact that baked liver or kidneys can get dry). Lamb hasn't yet the strong flavour of mutton (but has a specific flavour) so that is a plus. I am surprised that, of all the dishes, this is the one that made the list.
There's this stigma associated with being an eastern european country and some countries like Hungary, Czech Republic, Austria take offense to being called that and claim they are are in central europe, but this is the first time i've heard the expression south eastern central europe. Drob - the easter dish with minced meat - probably closest international equivalent dish would be lamb meatloaf but more herby and garlicky Painting intricate designs on eggs can be traced to the persian empire, so you can find it more around those parts, Iran etc, seeped through in time towards the east with trade and migrations and kinda makes sense that in christianity you mostly find it in eastern orthodox branches. Thanks for the video, hope you have a great day!
Well, Austria, Hungary, Czechs, Slovaks are Central Europe indeed. Romania is wrongly called Central European. It belongs to the Balkan region. Austria and Hungary belongs to the west geopolitically because we are Roman Catholic. Romania belongs to the Eastern Orthodox Church.
@@pfefferjozsef yeah i mean now it depends on your point of reference, if you mean strictly geographically, i see some of the proposed geographical centers of europe are western ukraine, belarus, lithuania and slovakia, so if you use any except slovakia, austria and czech could be western even, if you take it by religion as you said it's where the split of catholic and orthodox begins, or you can use the more recent one eastern europe starts at former eastern bloc nations, if you take it by economical power then everything east of austria , but still i lol'd at the 'south eastern central europe' expression
ok so while everyone is recommending pretty much the same food (aka sarmale with mamaliga, mici etc.), i would like to do the same thing the guy who recommended pork kept in lard did. my absolute favorite food is onion stew made with only chicken gizzards and hearts (so no liver or other innards). the onion should have a slightly salted and roasted aroma. the gizzards and hearts should be just a tiny bit hard from a pre-boil. I know it might seem like an unconventional food and not many would even touch these innards. but as the son of a chef, i will just say this is the only food i would eat a whole pot of at once, with the risk feeling ill after, no remorse. not many can achieve greatness in this relatively simple dish (that i briefly explained), so if you do end up visiting Romania and end up in a rural area for a while, this is one dish you MUSTN'T miss out on if you have the opportunity to ask someone to cook it. also, do try all the alcohol products, but be reserved, as it's quite potent if you dont hold your liquor well enough
@@MrGiant pleased to be of use 🙏 and thank you for promoting our beautiful country, stereotypes or not (as a lot of people said). While not many things online are still culturally accurate, they still remain in the history. Also a cool tidbit of history: search for Petrache Poenaru
I think i could provide a simple answer for Mr.Giant's question, @ 10:05 . Most of Romania's known mineral deposits have been mapped out and their exploitation started during or reached it's peak in the comunist era (1945-1989). In those times ppl were not allowed to own land. So nobody was forcefully relocated away. In fact, ppl were forced to move to certain areas or towns, if local labor was in short supply. There was also the practice of forced labor imposed on inmates ( especialy political disidents), in areas were certain toxic or harmfull mineral deposits were exploited ( being sent to the lead mines was considered a death sentence for most inmates ).
nice to see your video,I m from Romania but I moved to Sri Lanka because I prefer hot weather. But in has some special energetic places that really changed me after visiting them❤
Other than pronouncing literally every single Romanian word incorrectly (probably because it's being read by a Text-to-Speech bot set up for English pronunciation), the list gets mostly everything else right. Now, almost everything on this list is technically true, but most of them apply to only a single town or county in Romania, but they're technically true, since those are actual traditions that happen *somewhere* in the country. The only thing that is blatantly wrong is that they say we celebrate Martisor on May 1st. The correct date is MARCH 1st. Unlike most of the facts on this list,, this one happens to be a nation wide tradition, but they just got the date wrong.

Just two things from a Romanian citizen:
Such bad pronunciation at least the comentator could have done his homework on how to say thigs corectly even google translator says it better 😅😅

Romania is very rich in resources, of all kinds. It is very similar to an African country that owns diamond mines and yet its citizens are kept in poverty.
Good comparison! And never recognized for what it is, just like Africa. I hope our time will come. ♥️💛💙
Finally someone exposes some truth about Romania! Thanks!
Most of westerners don't want to speak about the poverty and corruption, racism etc.
Sounds great!
@@MrGiantWhat he calls “mamaliga” here is in fact polenta which is boiled maize made thicker and harder than porridge and served as replacement for fries or bread as a side to the “stew” called “tocanitza”.
I am Romanian, born and lived there for 19 yrs before I left the country. Some of the facts mentioned in this video, I didn't know myself, either. I hope every tourist visitor has a good experience visiting there. God bless Romania.

ROMANIE ,ESTE TARA
MEA SI A STRABUNILOR MEI 🌿
Greetings from Romania, Mr. Giant. I'm living in Cluj, only one mile from that strange forest 'Baciu'. My wife saw 30 years ago, standing at the window, a UFO upon Baciu Forest.
It stood few minutes moving slow around and it flied away, fast, in the sky.
That is crazy. Makes me want to visit that place.
Here's some equally and even more interesting facts about Romania:
* Transylvania comes from the latin words, "Trans-silva" meaning, "trans-forest" or "cross-forest".
Very interesting, thank you for sharing. I will have to look up Janos Hunyadi for sure. You have a great day. Take care.
@@MrGiant same to you.
Actually 'dracul' means 'the devil' in romanian.
'Drac' translates to 'devil'. The 'ul' at the end of the word is what makes it from 'devil' to 'the devil' himself😂
@@RobBln92 not according to the several Romanian friends. At least the first part.

I taught us Irish were superstitious, no Romania is by far.
All of those superstitions and rituals are almost gone, the younger romanians are very westernized" and those traditional rituals and stuff lilk these are not anymore like it was before 2010s I would say
romanians and irish are united by some historical events when some proto-romanians, namely aromanian (greek and albanian from vlach origin - vallahia) when they went into a war campaign in ireland, some of them are still there. macedonians or aromanians are a greek tribe akin to sparta with vlachian influences. aromanians are found today in greece, albania, serbia, montenegro, romania, bulgaria, sicily, ireland and wherever they campaigned. the actual music that aromanians have is very similar with irish music in terms of tempo and how it sounds overall. from there the actual drob that resembles an irish food made in a similar manner, namely haggis.

Wow, this sounds cool for sure. Making my list longer lol.

We have a history of 2.000 years so thats why so many traditions.

In Romania we can own land, but we can not own the riches of the land. If you discover Coal or Oil on your land, the government will buy your land and sell the exploitations rights to private companies. Often, the land is bought at a fraction of what is worth, sadly.

03:10 That " Drob de miel " it's a must.

Thank you forthe tips, I will keep that in mind.
But in has some special energetic places that really changed me after visiting them❤
Thanks for sharing!
This video gets a lot of facts right about Romania, but how to pronounce things is NOT one of them
Other than pronouncing literally every single Romanian word incorrectly (probably because it's being read by a Text-to-Speech bot set up for English pronunciation), the list gets mostly everything else right.
Thank you for the correstion.
