What Hagi did in football is pure math into practice, a genius player, he's shots are powerful and tactical at the same time, lethal left foot and understood the trajectories better than most players. As a kid, I enjoyed and loved the Columbia game until I found out Escobar ordered the assassination of a player that team's loss against USA, a team that was a host with basically no football history or skills. I scared and woke Me up. I wondered what the players felt and if they ever thought they were responsible for trying their best.
And to add more to his legacy for football, the man invested a big part of is personal earnings in a football club which he created from zero, with no fans or stadium. Being a club that started from zero without followers, the big corporations sponsors came only after long years so the man risked his personal wealth if the business would have flopped. That club now is among the best in Romania, won 2 leagues by now. Romanian league is not much at the European level, but this shows how big Hagi's commitment to football is. He creates football players in his academy starting from young boys. Besides being a big footballer ( a pleasure to watch ) he is also a true character.

Accurate to a tee. 1998 was the last World Cup Romania ever participated in. He retired after that World Cup and some parts of Romanian media literally guilted him into coming back. He came back to qualify Romania to Euro 2000 and made it to the QF. Then he retired from the national team for good. We never recovered. We had a decent generation after his (Mutu, Chivu & co), but they were very unlucky and sadly they did not rise up to the level of their predecessors. Current generation is the worst I've seen in my lifetime. Bear in mind that Romania is not necessarily a small country. Romanian football nowadays is a joke (both in club and international football), but Hagi started his own football academy and his own football club in his hometown. It is the only place where any remotely talented Romanian fooball players are made. He never was a great football manager, but his eye for talent is second to none. There will never be anyone like him again and the biggest shame is that the Turks arguably appreciated him more than the Romanians did while he was active. Let's divide football into two eras: the stone balls and the aero-dynamic balls - so since the 80s there has never been a better long-range shooter than Hagi, absolutely nobody! He was muchhhh better than both Silva's. As a rule of thumb: players back then as a whole were better than this era's simply cos they mostly came through rough street football as opposed to regimented academies where players are turned into robots of the system and JDP football didn't suck out all the free-expression. You will find this out as you continue to react to old school player -the superior technique. Today's teams though are better, as tactics are more nuanced, and diets are better. The problem with today's footballers is that they train and play matches on 30 meter football field until they are 15 years old. I remember when I was 10 years old, I was running on the 100-meter field and I was shooting from 30 meters. You can't compare the trainings back then with the ones now. And nowadays you don't really have children who run outside all day from a young age. What you see today are little girls with better conditions, lighter balls, better fields, better equipment.

In Romania we have also Nicolae Dobrin who played for FC Argeș Pitești...is not as known as Hagi...but many players who played against both said Hagi was good...but if Dobrin had the ball at his foot you would n even touch it...he could play even after he drank a day before and score 3 goals with no problems...Hagi and Dobrin played in different eras of football and President of Real Madrid Santiago Bernabeu himself came in Romania at the time to negociate a transfer for Dobrin at Real with president of Romania at that time Nicolae Ceaușescu after he saw Dobrin playing at Real Madrid trainings where he was invited for about a week and officially in a friendly at one of Real Madrid legendary player retirement but Romanian Communist leader and also him refused the transfer so he stayed at Pitești.
