  • This guide is based on the 2007 RUclips video titled "VJ Kung Fu: Build a Projector Mount That Will Go Anywhere": • VJ Kung Fu: Build a Pr... . Shout out to @psensibil for helping me with this DIY mount the first time I built it.
I have been using this mount for all my live visual shows. Without it, it would not be possible for me to set up my projector on ceilings at music venues on the day of, and then easily take it down at the end of the show. This couple hundred dollar project makes your projector useable in so many situations.
    PARTS LIST (B&H website)
    - 6" End Jaw bhphotovideo.com/c/product/86...
    - 3" Baby Wall Plate www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...
    - Baby to Junior Swivel Pin www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...
    - 2.5" Grip Head www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...
    - 20" Grip Head Extension Arm (recommended) www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...
You will also need a wooden board (cut to your projector's length x width), a drill, an electric screwdriver, wood screws, bolts (with threads that match your projector's mounting holes), and washers & nuts.

Just to pre-empt this: the projector I use is an Optoma WU515. Please don't ask me about specific models and stuff, I am not an expert and there are plenty of guides out there to help you. All I can say is I recommend projectors with 4k lumens or more in brightness. Resolution, aspect ratio, and throw ratio are all things that depend on you and your environment. Use projectorcentral.com to help you. It has the specs of over 11,000 projector models and a handy throw distance calculator for each one.

I never knew I needed this video. At my last venue I had to project from a balcony and prop it up at a downward angle

You ever get asked about liability or insurance, anything like that when doing this? It's a great idea. Those are grip materials so I know they are sturdy. However, I imagine some venues not wanting you to do it because it could fall. Do you clear out the area below if you can? Thinking about doing this but maybe adding a hook on it so I can wrap a chain or something around it as well.

yes it's standard practice in any venue to use a safety cable when mounting something like this. also in the USA I am an LLC so I can't be personally sued if something bad happens.

I've been planning a live set up but was considering buying a short throw projector so I don't have to worry about mounting. Are there any benefits to using a long throw in a live setting? I figure you have done enough live shows to have encountered issues that I am unaware as of now.
Freaking love your videos btw and it has helped me immensely through my personal analog glitch rabbit hole. It always feels good when you mention some hiccups you have had and I have experienced it too. Keep it up! We need more people like you!

The big advantage of this with a short throw is you can mount it in the ceiling so it won't shine in the performers

this is true, i've always wanted one, but it does make it harder in some situations (setting up right on top of the stage) and they seem to be harder to find

@@YOVOZOL check out epson 585w (or similar) on eBay, around $300. I have 3 and they're super useful. Lower lumens(~3k) but so close to the screen it's ok. They don't work in every scenario but are great for some.
