  • Knock, knock. Who’s there? Possibly a scam. Portsmouth police are warning homeowners to be on guard when opening their doors to people who claim to be from their bank or mortgage company. It happened in one Portsmouth neighborhood off of Beaton Drive.

    They used to do this on Craigslist all the time about 10-15 years ago. They’d say they own this million dollar home and they want to hire someone as a house sitter while they studied abroad. Wanted a fee for an insurance deposit or some such nonsense.

    The internet and the use of automation is making it that much easier, but when they talk about being tough on crime these areas are suspiciously left out. Street crimes are what they concentrate on, even though internet crimes bring in the most money and causes the most damage.
