Niv Mizzet Parun Commander Deck Tech

  • Niv-Mizzet Parun isn't new to Ravnica or to commander tables. We have seen the combos and the value spells. Where does this commander fit in? I have seen so much good stuff for the spellslinger archetype in the past year; this opens up so many possibilities for customization. I think that this Niv Mizzet will look nothing like its previous iterations. This deck is flexible (except in mana cost) powerful (except for the power of all the creatures in the deck) and fun (except for your opponents).

    Awesome vid as always, DJ. Niv was my first commander, and I built him like this; with the copy spells and artifacts like mirari, and cantripy spells and a lot of bouncey sweepers. One of my favorites in the deck was dissmis into dream which i could consistantly wipe the board with.

  • @egormatveev1050
    @egormatveev1050 6 лет назад +7

    I know the storm build will probably be better, but I feel like punish is a theme worth exploring. Niv draws when any player cast a spell, so you could play a counterspell base, rhystic studies consecrated sphinx and punish people for playing the game by drawing a million cards and pinging the board and the face infinitely.

It was mid to late game and I had Niv out, laboratory maniac and thousand year storm and clever impersonator that copied the thousand year storm with a bunch of mana up. And so I casted like 3 or 4 small spells thanks to goblin electromancer and jaces sanctum to get thousand year storm up there to cast my final spell which was finale of revelation payed 12 mana and drew the rest of my deck which was about 30 to 40 cards and my opponent flipped his shit and left the card shop and didn’t return the rest of the day🤣🤣🤣

    I think you are correct in that the Parun doesn't quite lend himself to a dedicated storm strategy. There are better commanders for that. In my personal list I am leaning heavily on control/removal and focusing on fattening my hand to the point of overwhelming the table with card advantage. I view the Parun as more of means of fattening my hand, rather than pinging everyone to death, although he can certainly do that. Spiraling Embers and Fateful Showdown are some good win cons, as is Mindmoil/Omniscience. I'm looking at As Foretold too as a way of circumventing mana costs. It gets nuts with Vedalken Orrey or Leyline of Anticipation. Reality Scramble can help dig for things like Omniscience or Consecrated Sphinx provided we keep those permanent types to a minimum in our library.

  • @GoldStorm07
    @GoldStorm07 6 лет назад

    With my various Niv-Mizzet builds, Archmage Ascension has been a dark horse win condition. It can activate in just 2 turn cycles if you set up right, and as soon as it's active you can drop Niv and just win. I usually made use of Dream Halls and Enter the Infinite for the most dramatic victories and Dream Halls is more useful in Parun's deck because of our general's more restrictive mana cost.
    I adore Parun's design. He marries the two most popular Izzet EDH strategies of spellslinging/storm and wheel effects for card draw and synergizes them under a single umbrella. You could build this deck to be very interactive with your opponents in a truly chaotic manner, or just achieve victory with endless turns (Izzet's supposed to be fun tho).

    I have a Niv Mizzet Parun deck, and i have a really cheesy Wincon, Omniscience > Manabarbs. Your spells cost nothing, their spells cost them 1 life per cmc. It's a fun Control/Storm Build that uses many of these cards, but also teeters into the Artifacts archtype a bit too.

    I think just having thousand year storm as the only storm card is fine even if you have just a card draw deck/ spell slinging. just for even more card draw. also if metallurgic summonings is played or the deck tips toward artifact mana I recommend using storm the vault for large amounts of mana. isochron scepter and dramatic reversal could also be a viable way to get infinite mana depending on your local meta.

    I’m surprised you didn’t mention Spiraling Embers! It does damage equal to the number of cards in your hand (like fateful showdown but without the discard thing)
    I built a deck with mizzix based on “draw the shit out of your library then Spiraling Embers” and copy it for each opponent on the table. It usually hits for 50-60 everybody. Fun! But now I think I’ll do that with Niv Mizzet :)

    I honestly feel like most of those value enchantments and artifacts aren't even really needed. Niv-Mizzet is such an insane engine on his own. You just need to get him out then start cantripping as much as you can until you run into a wincon. It's a bit of a dull gameplan and not the way I like to play usually, but it does seem like the most effective way to build him.

    You've approached the deck from the wrong side. Let's go with the Paradox Engine + mana rocks, still have a bunch of cantrips, leave in the Thousand Year Storm and alike, but add Past in Flames, Jayas Immolating Inferno, Inner Fire, Jaya Ballard, Fall of the Titans, Blue Sun's Zenith, Read the Runes, Banefire, Reverberate, Refuse to Cooperate and Insult to Injury, and there comes out maybe not strictly a storm deck, but certainly something that can win in a single turn.

    What is this decks (tapped out version in the description) win condition? pinging people with niv-mizzet? What if Niv-mizzet always gets removed right after being played? Is there any other win cons beside niv-mizzet?

    So if we have 1000-year storm out and lets say we cast 3 instants, what happens if we cast grapeshot? does it copy grapeshot 4 times and each grapeshot has storm?

    It seems like you're implying thousand year storm, swarm intelligence, mirari conjecture spells draw you cards to Niv but I'm pretty sure the copies are created on the stack and don't count as "cast"? Please tell me if I'm wrong bc I'm making a Jori-En deck

    This Niv-Mizzet seems the best for general play but I think Dracogenius is the best overall. All you have to do is get infinite mana online and you win.

    I'm new to magic. I'm looking at Niv Mizzet because it's everything I want in a commander, but I'm curious. The Izzet guild seems to have a lot of "copy target card" effects, and to me, the best thing about Niv Mizzet is Niv Mizzet. With cards like Quasiduplicate and the ability to copy cards, wouldn't that make more sense? The best way to trigger Niv Mizzet's effect more often isn't to cast more spells, it's to have more Niv MIzzet's. Has anyone made a deck like this?

      GodOfReality Having multiple Niv-Mizzets would certainly be powerful but as he is a Legendary creature two Niv-Mizzet, Paruns cannot exist on your side of the battlefield at the same time. One would have to be sacrificed immediately once the copy came into play barring a few special cards that let you bend the legendary rule such as Helm of the Host or Mirror Gallery. Alternatively, you can definitely run the original Niv-Mizzet card Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind in the other 99 cards since he has that same “1 damage for each card you draw” effect and since it doesn’t share the exact name both Nivs can be out on your field at the same time.

    So is this one of the 99 in a Locust God deck or is Locust God one of the 99 in THIS commander’s deck?

    My storm has a lot of replicate so it can replicate mana boost and it has several cards that reduce the cost so it’s a lot of free mana then you can also replicate a firebal or something after that or just thousand year storm the game
