Grothama All Devouring Commander Deck Tech

- Grothama, All-Devouring is all about the fight. Whenever you fight, make sure it's on your terms. Pack your deck full of power-full creatures to draw more cards and deploy more creatures. This deck is surprisingly resilient just make sure not to let your enemies take down your draw-engine-general and restock their own hands in the process. This deck is a load of fun to play. I built it and took it out for a spin and people quickly realized just how dangerous a "vanilla" 10/8 can be. Happy brewing!

Its a raid boss that drops hella loot. I like it.
Ertas Ten oh yeah man, look at the art!
WHAT?? A 5 mana drop that has MORE attack than our lord&saviour Yargle??
HERESY!!
Just wait until M19 comes out. We got one with bigger toughness than Grothama and same power
Gigantosauraus should be ridden by Yargle:P
Lord of Tresserhorn says hello.
The Yargle that we see on earth is clearly just the manifested spirit that is only part of the trinity of Yargle. There is an omniscient and omnipotent Yargle in the aether that we cannot comprehend ...which would smite Grothama, and us all, if it so pleased.
I fucking love you XD
Grothama reads “when this creature leaves the battlefield”, not when this creature dies. This means you could put some cool flicker effects in the deck as well.
like erratic portal xD
Not a whole lot of flicker in green and there's about 1 artifact that does it
Inwas thinking about that too
Temur Sabertooth says "Hi."
I was also thinking about erratic portal
You definitely need the green Myojin from Kamigawa in this deck. It's 8/8 indestructible that u can kill grothama, draw 8 and then remove its indestructibility and put in game ALL the creatures in your hand. With the insane card draw that u can generate with this deck this is a must.
Asceticism is also good to protect your creatures from removal and sweepers. Bane of progress is a must since this is a creature heavy deck which can get huge and help u kill Grothama.
Maybe add a Storm seeker (3G inst. deals dmg equal to cards in hand) somewhere in there for payback to the opponent who kills your commander. Sword of war and Peace will punish anyone abusing Grothama's draw ability.
Also be careful not to mill yourself out. It CAN happen during these exciting moments.
Very interesting deck and looks super fun.
I was just about to comment about Myojin of Life's Web too, sounds so crazy here!
I've been trying to use Myojin on XMage but it never seems to get the divinity counter so I haven't gotten to have fun with it yet. Need it in paper.
That's strange, the blue Myojin always worked for me on xmage.
STILL different from my own Grothama build, STILL different from every other Grothama build I've seen on RUclips thus far. I'm very happy to see this! People are seeing different parts of this card and building it in different ways. It's cute
Hopefully the video jumpstarts ideas, then people make the deck their own. For example, druid's call gave me an opportunity I couldn't pass up. So I added squirrel synergies!!! Including Earl of Squirrel so I can squirrel fight Grothama :)
I want to play commander with you.
Awesome deck.
I have ordered the commander a while ago.
Now I need to make it a reality hahaha
At first I didn't like this deck, but now Im placing an order for all of these cards on TCG Player. Thank you Jumbo Commander!
Inspiring and interesting deck tech! As expected from you!
Gotta start building my own Grothama deck asap!!!
Love your content!
Good job Jumbo! For making it onto the Command zone! Sorry for the belated congrats. Used to watch your videos religiously but been kinda been really busy lately. Keep up the awesome content as well! Really loved this deck tech a bunch.
Thank you! I'm excited to do some brewing and arguing with Josh.
Jumbo Commander Yo, I didn’t realized you replied back. 😂 I hope we will be able to see you in a game nights haha!
DJ, every time I watch one of your videos, you make me excited to build new decks.
I've never seen a green deck that could potentially draw so many cards, I love it. This looks like a super fun deck to play. Now I gotta build Grothama.
Mossbridge troll! I'm a green player and had never seen this troll! It's definitely going into my big green creature edh deck! Great video, lots of,good ideas and thanks for showing me the troll!
I love this guy. Recently built a Grothama deck and you really add some fun ideas. Psychosis crawler for the win!!
THATS AN ALASKAN BULL WORM!
Had to look it up .... the resemblance is striking but I'm no Oligochaeteologist
spencersonnier1 ITS BIG SCARY AND PINK!
Great video! I love the flavor of this commander!
Just subscribed because of the into. "Now before you attack!"
Awesome deck tech!!! It was great meeting you and playing against you in Vegas, I hope I have the opportunity again!
Played about 10 games with this decklist and it definitely isn't my favorite. I felt like things just had to come together correctly for it to even stand a chance. Had some really high highs but it was pretty low the rest of the time and it wasn't too fun to play.
Wow, crazy draw in green, can't believe my eyes.
hey Jumbo, love your deck techs!
I'm new to the EDH scene ( about 4 month in now). I recently watched your Jodah deck tech and build a deck with the mentioned decklist and the suggestions in the video.
Really helped me alot :). Thank you for your videos and keep the great work up
So glad you have gotten into EDH! It's a format that's really full of fun gameplay and awesome people. Keep brewing!
I was having a stupid hard time figuring out how best to play Grothama. Turns out I have a mono green Vorinclex deck thats about to get new moves. Thanks Jumbo Commander! Love your deck techs
You have a VORINCLEX deck?!?!?! Don't people just save kill spells for your general over and over again?
Sometimes but I defend him with canopy cover, alpha authority, ascetism etc. Lots of broken commanders in my play group so removal is usually stretched thin
I like how the background for the "Indestructibility" section is Destructor Dragon :)
Great deck tech! Very original and fun deck it seems.
And oh my god, I just checked the Core Set Spoilers and swa Arcades, I DEFINITELY want you to do sooooo bad a deck tech of the defender dragon! :D
LOL The first Mythic I pulled in my battlebond draft was Grothama. I spent some time just looking at the card to understand why it is mythic, instantly was drawn to the ''leaves the battlefield text'' was like ''oh I can bounce this creature'' but now you've mentioned that it can fight my own creatures, LMAO totallty missed that! So far I was using Grothama in my Derevi bounce and then tried Grothama in my Meren deck. I love bouncing Grothama, when it came to opponents combat I bounced Grothama, they get no card advantage, also using Bant gives access to all the bounce, indestructible, and pump spells; it is almost like a mini game now with my Derevi deck that it spends time fighting Grothama and not bothering with my opponents who in turn kind of leave me alone, meanwhile drawing cards to get my lock down combo. Meren merely sacrifices Grothama after a few tokens attack it each turn, merely to bring it back again:P
* draws 25 cards and prays for something that gives no maximum hand size*
remember, Murphy is an optomist
Just draw 75 and there's a solid chance you've got it.
And then I make you discard your hand
I've been playing a similar deck to this lately in paper and recently I dropped Vigor with Grothama out and I just turned my Inkmoth into a creature to swing for game. Seems like a really good land with Ibex and many of the other pump spells/effects we have.
Good call! I had thought to include treetop village but I dismissed inkmoth because the infect would permanently reduce Grothama but your angle is WAY worth the inclusion. Thank you!
It really is, especially since Vigor seems to be such a focus to bring out with a lot of the tutor cards and it's just a land slot. The opportunity to threaten game with this at any point that we have 6 mana is very real. (assuming Grothama and Inkmoth is already out)
When are you going to show us your Akiri/Bruse Tarl deck? The Boros need you to regain their honor! 😉
Btw. great episode! I haven’t watched it yet, but i know it’s going to be!
Because I changed it to a Akiri/Tymna deck ... and it's just so much better. I was also trying out cards like Danitha and Valduk ... and they were pretty MEH as well, It's in a good place now and I will present it when I stop getting mobbed by awesome spoilers :)
Jumbo Commander
Interesting, i look forward to see your take on it. So far i like using Akiri as an aggressive voltron Commander with a lot of power, evasion, and then giving her double strike/Lifelink with the use of Bruse tarl, often ending opponents in one hit.
Btw, had never heard of Moldgraf Monstrosity and Mossbridge Troll, they’ll be Nice additions to my Selvala, Heart of the Wilds deck!👍😉
Awesome deck! Big creatures ftw!
I picked up Grothama as a fun jank card for my Ghalta commander deck, love the wurm.
Yes! I love Grothama as a commander! Although It's terrible, It's such a unique and seems like a fun commander! It's like boss commander, and everyone tries to take out this boss and gain loot based on how much damage you dealt! I love it! Personally I prefer to take the rout of trying to make your opponent fight Grothama, and then you protect it by using big instant speed pump spells, as well as using them as a surprise when attacking by pumping them and giving them trample to kill with commander damage, although there might not be enough good ones to make it work.
I guess we won't be seeing more Dominaria deck tecs for a while because of Battlebond.
Grothama is quickly becoming my favourate card from battlebond!
Watching this was a treat, thanks for it
I made a deck and it was a wurm deck and i could not find a legendary wurm but i guess there is one so thank you for showing me that legendary wurms do exist
FYI, with the fighting, you get the triggers, and resolve them one at a time. That means: A.) you can't overkill it with more than one creature, and B.) you can't trick an opponent to kill their own board, as the trigger is a may ability, so they'll just opt out after you give him indestructible.
This is a sad oversight on my part. I was hoping that players "may" add the fight trigger to the stack, but from what you are saying is that the trigger happens no matter what upon attack and they "may" chose to fight. Still a fun commander but I would have liked to ambush a players team instead of just a couple creatures here and there.
Great Content. Love your channel !
Could you try to create a turbo fog deck? I have no idea what the commander would be, and I’d like to see how you would approach that
Do you know the first rule of Wurm Club?
dont talk about it?
Yes, I do
I do xD
No dragons?
Don’t talk about worm club
I just finished building my Grothama deck. Let me tell you how excited I am to play it. In particular one card is my favorite. That card... is Predatory Urge. The wurm eats itself and I draw 20 cards!
Grothama goes well with Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist in 1v1 commander. Swing with Mirri, your opponent has to either block the giant 10/8 or try and kill Mirri. Then on your opponent's turn they can only attack with one creature, nowhere near enough to kill Grothama unless it's an eldrazi or something else that big.
I believe Seedborn Muse from the Kamigawa block would be extremely helpful as well.
+Jumbo Commander Nice idea.
That said, there is a slight problem with your Heroic Intervention plan: Grothama is a may trigger. The decision to fight or not is made when the ability resolves. You can't ask your opponent if they're going to have their whole team fight your general and slam Heroic Intervention for the blowout. At best, you'll get a bunch of weenies or 1-2 mid-sized guys (more if you have pump) before you have to play Heroic Intervention AND you have to hope they don't have removal to ruin your day.
However, you forgot to mention an obscure green card called Storm Seeker. How funny would it be pretend you can't stop them from drawing an obscene number of cards and then go "Oh by the way. Take 25 damage, and you're dead."
Helm of the host is a great to consider for every edh deck but it only good if you have a commander that really benefits having multiple copies.
I made this deck and tried it today. VERY VERY fun. 7 games. My opponents drew 0 cards and I drew +50 from Grothama!
I'm surprised you didn't mention Conjurer's Closet with Grothama and Indestructible, his ability does state he only has to LEAVE the battlefield, for the card draw.
Grothama is the Green God we all deserve. 🙌👏🙏🙇
you didn't mention things like Temur Sabertooth or Conjurer's Closet! Blinking or picking up Grothama (especially at instant speed) is super powerful
I was going to do a Sylvala Heart of the Wild List but this deck has me giddy to play
Grothama his triggered abillity would also work if it is bounced or flickerd right? Since it only says that it needs to leave the battlefield.
Hi Jumbo! Wow, there are so many interesting ideas in this video.
But wouldn't it be nice to add some regeneration, like Yavimaya Hollow or Asceticism to prevent your enemies from drawing while keeping your own creatures that fought Grothama?
Oh and lifelink can be crazy too. Imagine getting 10 life for EVERY creature fighting it!
Well, obviously, infect is also really strong with this one.
Why not also flicker this thing with Voyager Staff :D
All great suggestions!
I have Yavimaya Hollow and Basilisk Collar in the decklist. I should have mentioned how those would be a HUGE deterrent from other attempting to attack Grothama. I didn't consider Voyager's Staff, very cool!
I started my own after it got spoiled I would like to suggest cards like combo attack this enables grothama to fight its self kinda along with another high powered creature but it is fun nonetheless and super budget would recommend a build
Great suggestion. Super fun too!
Bear vs Wurm vs Hydra vs Elf.
Who will win you decide who the best mono green commander.
All the fight triggers on that are concurrent right? So each creature would fight, state-based actions would be checked, and if Grothama dies after the first one or two, the rest won't fight him?
I mean the video occasionally talks about massively overswinging for more card draw, does it work like that, or like I described in the first sentence?
Each trigger is separate, so in the case of 1,000 1/1s you'd only draw 8 cards
That's what I thought. Thank you.
Heroic Intervention doesnt really help you that your opponent "sacrificed" his whole board. The fight trigger goes in the stack and you decide on resolution of the trigger if they fight or not. You have to cast Heroic Intervention before that, so they most likely won't fight your GROTHAMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I like this decktech, i would add some form of recursion for our commander so it doesnt get too expensive, as well as to bring back some key creatures
Agreed. I have command tower as a pretty poor version of this. It could use some others. Someone this weekend mentioned Nim Deathmantle which sounded spicy.
The Heroic Intervention doesn't quite work the way you described it. You opponents decide if they want to fight Grothama once the ability resolves. If you respond to the ability given to your opponents creatures by Grothama by casting Heroic Intervention, you opponents can just say: ok then, I wont fight your wurm.
Why is that? I thought it worked like they activated their ability, and in response to them activating their ability you cast heroic intervention. They can't just un-activate it, surely?
The trigger goes on the stack to fight grothama, they are all excited saying "oh boy time to draw some cards", then before the fight resolves you grant grothama indestructible. Now the fight trigger resolves. But the fight trigger is a may trigger, so when it resolves they can simply say "not trading in my board for nothing, I dont fight the worm". Now what you can do is wait for is some of the fight triggers to resolve, then before the final blow is struck tear open a portal in time and fling them into the future where your evil is law, then the fool shall seek to return to the past. So it sort of works.
Myojin of Life's Web and Sasaya, Orochi Ascendant are really good after you draw a ton of cards.
Grothama doesn’t need to die. It needs to leave the battlefield. You can as well bounce it to your hand. Or may be exile it somehow after doing DMG to it.
If you have trample against your own creatures won't that still deal the difference to yourself?
Probably has already been addressed beforehand, but I'm posting this for ease of searching. Death isn't the required path. Flicker that big guy, or bounce him and cast him.
Hey Jumbo, what about Elemental Resonance, for mana? It's a 2GG aura that gives you mana equal to the enchanted creature's mana cost, at your pre combat mainphase.
And Sporeback Troll. 3G for a Graft 2 creature, that has "1G: Regenerate target creature with a +1/+1 counter on it".
HA, I have never seen that card before. It opens you up to a 2-for-1 but THE STYLE POINTS! I love it
Jumbo Commander... Only now I've realised that it says enchant PERMANENT, not just creature!
As a semi joke, you forgot Mono Green's only single target, 2 card combo boardwipe. Tempting Licid + Engulfing Slagworm. :3
HAah, love it
I can see more of a tron strategy where you grow the worm and then when it inevitably dies hopefully you get a lot of damage and draw more cards it also gives us more time to draw combo pieces example phycosis crawler
That's an Alaskan Bull Worm. Even has Druid's Call making a bunch of little Sandy's n' shit.
He doesn't need to "die" which is important as it allows you to send it back to the command zone
Dragon Throne of Tarkir doesn't let your entire board state turn into a 50 card draw.
Once the first creature who recieved +10/+10 fights Grothama, this will cause Grothama to die before the rest of the fights resolve. You'll draw 10 cards, plus the power of the first fighter.
I built a tribal Wurm deck with him as the commander. Yeah there are better options for that route but it was on theme.
Didn't play the deck for long because my play group actually found a way to whine about the deck being "too powerful". *Sigh*
But I remember in one game i had Grothoma out as well as Impervious Greatwurm. Greatwurm was equipped with Inquisitor's Flail. Guess what happened? I drew 32 cards and my Greatwurm remained. But I also wanted to yolo a bit so I cast Momentous Fall as well to draw another 16 cards and gain 16 life.
Ah, silly green stuff.
All the creature power but no interaction? How do we remove threats? I need more!
Why not use Temur Sabertooth? Grothama's ability doesn't say "dies" is says "leaves the battlefield"
My version of this deck is so gross, my playgroup hates playing against it and only two players have drawn cards from killing Grothoma in the year that I’ve had the deck.
I feel like some first strike equipment might be interesting to deter your opponents from using his ability or make it more challenging
Fighting is not affected by first strike
On mana: I tested Sasaya, Mana Reflection, Karametra's Acolyte, & Omnath(helps with Power too later on). Not all of these are needed, but they help at playing those cards you are going to be drawing. Or in Omnath's case just make it really fucking big.
In regards to Vigor, the attacking creatures fight one at a time in the order the player chooses, and since Grothama gets bigger after each fight, each subsequent creature that fights it(that you control) gets bigger as well. Also, choosing to fight doesn't stop the attack of whatever fights Grothama(unless the creature attacking dies from fighting Grothama), with Vigor making all your creatures that fight insanely huge, if you can give them trample or another form of evasion, you pretty much win that turn.
If enemy attacks it,can i block with any other creature?
Also wasn't there an artifact that let you sacrifice something to draw cards equal to its power?
You can force damage to it then flicker it since it’s leave the battlefield not dies
What are some cuts you can make to get this down to $100-150 and still fuck with your opponent?
Keep the instant speed indestructible spells. Add mana dorks and cut things like Oracle of MulDaya. I would also say try and REALLY trim the deck down to like $75 then play it and that way you can FEEL what's missing and invest the last $50 to make the deck play better.
Keep in mind it's not a death trigger, but a leaves a battlefield trigger. Too bad there are no blinking effects in green...
I feel like instead of ‘destined to die’ you missed an opportunity to use a ‘born to die’ reference however great video!
I know if I built this I would focus more on the first ability. It grows infinitely large with a Vigor in play
Hey! I know you haven't finished Dominaria, barely started Battlebond... but I NEEEED you to make an Arcades, the Strategist list pretty please
PS: play a couple of weenies, don't kill Grothama, use Conjurers Closet to flicker Grothama to LTB then draw!... also greater good? hello draw for days
Why do they keep giving us so many commanders?!?!? I can't keep up. I'll simply have to make more videos.
Oh noooo more videos.... what ever will we do!?!?
.
.
.
.
.
The answer is watch them, we will watch them all!!
Well I men, he doesn't need to die, you could just blink him, then you get to keep him around and draw the cards.
temur sabre tooth would be funny when they choose to fight the wurm send it back to ur hand & they all swing & miss ;)
Do Goreclaw next. We need bear tribal!
Now you have it.
Grothama doesnt need to die, it needs to leave the bettlefield. See conjurers closet.
helm should just be in all commander decks
I have helm of the host in my atraxa deck. It gets out of control really fast
Ok so i have 10 decks and Promised Not to Build ans new decks and you bring my favorite battlebond Card :/
I have made that promise too ... it doesn't last long
I had a single deck that kept evolving, broke It down into two different decks, sold both of them, built three new decks, combined the three into a single one, then Said to myself "ok! That's It! No more Commanders for me!" Then Commander 2018 was announced. Welp...here we Go again...
I need to put this guy in my enrage deck so my enragers can fight him. That would be awesome.
Although I may just replace my enrage deck with something like this...
I’d be interested to see an attempt of mono-green mill forcing people to kill this and losing cards in their library
Sakura Tribe Elder doesn't really work well as you have to sacrifice it for it's ability to work, meaning it won't have dealt the damage to Grothama.
Just going to say Gruun is pretty bae.
Isn't protean hulk banned in edh?
Pattern of rebirth would be great in here.
Multani, Maro Sorcerer I think has a place in this deck
Put genesis in the deck so you can always pay 3 to put it back into you're hand then no command tax
My two recommendations are: Death's Presence and Repopulate
I seriously thought Yavimaya Elder was just a head with other heads as hands...
States when it leave the battlefield
So flicker fun?
Guys, why not fecundity for overkill?
Could you make a commander deck tech for vaevictis asmadi, the dire pleeeass!!!
It looks so sweet. I can't see how I'll avoid making a deck around it.
how will we get the commander back from the graveyard, after it dies? i dont get it
Rapaijas Fraben You can just recast it from the command zone (goes up by 2 mana each time)
Is Pariah Shield banned in Commander?
