- 📢 Making decisions can be really hard, especially when it comes to picking out a furry companion! For better or worse, there are a ton of options when it comes to the coat color of a Goldendoodle, some of which many people don’t even know to exist!
👉 A Quick Overview
🐶 Brown
The brown color mostly comes from the poodle part of the hybrid but is a recessive gene, and so it is somewhat hard to consistently breed these guys, as well as it is almost guaranteed that you won’t get the shade of brown.
🐶 Apricot
The apricot doodle is one of the most sought-after colors for the already popular breed, mainly because it makes your doodle look like a big teddy bear! The AKC has accepted this as an official breed and a fun fact…
🐶 Red
The Red Goldendoodle became popular because of how much its black nose and dark red coat resembled a children’s teddy bear, making it a no-brainer as the doodle is famously a family dog. The reddish mahogany really pops out and is the “brightest” color for a Goldendoodle.
🐶 Cream
Which is a very light-colored doodle that is sometimes even mistaken for a labradoodle since it's so light. What makes the cream doodle so interesting is how much their physical appearances can vary. The Goldendoodle can have a light brown nose, a lighter shade of eye color, and even lighter toenails!
🐶 Black
The black Goldendoodle is one of the rarest colors for a doodle, making them kind of a unicorn to find. To create a black Goldendoodle you will have to find a poodle and a golden retriever that both have the recessive black gene.
🐶 Parti
A Parti Goldendoodle is 50% white, as well as a second color, a first so far on the list. The second color can be anything but is usually a tan or an apricot. Creating a Parti Doodle is also particularly difficult and complicated, resulting in needing to breed recessive genes with recessive genes.
🐶 Black & White
The Black and White Goldendoodle is a fan favorite for many, and it's easy to see why! The contrast between the two colors is striking, and this doodle has very specific features to match; including a white chest, white nose, and a streak of white on top of their head.
🐶 Sable
Sable Goldendoodles are actually born completely black if you can believe that! Then over time, the solid color fades, and over time the sable will turn into a lighter color, kind of like a cream or tan with black tips. This gives a very striking look to the doodle, as well as framing them in a very unique way.
🐶 Merle
Merle Goldendoodles are so rare because any kind of dominant gene will overshadow the recessive merle trait. Because of this, merle doodles should never mate with each other, since their offspring can be born blind, deaf, or have other deformities occur, so be careful!
🐶Grey
Grey Goldendoodles are also born with very dark fur that turns grey around the age of 2, like the silver poodle. If you are a breeder or puppy owner wondering if you may have a doodle, you probably will know by 6 weeks, which is usually when the Goldendoodle hair clears up.
🐶 Phantom
The phantom doodle is a rare breed, and unlike the Parti Goldendoodle, there are very clear rules for the dog to be considered a phantom. The rule is that the dog must have a primary color that covers most of the body, and then a secondary color that appears only on the eyes, the muzzle of the nose, and the lower part of the legs.
🐶 Tan
The tan Goldendoodle, which is a mix between the apricot and cream doodles. You will shades of white and apricot in their fur as well, which it gets from the golden retriever in its genes.

We bred our cream goldendoodle with an our black and white Parti Poodle. Mom had 3 tan, 2 solid black and one Phantom, and 3 cream pups. I had no idea what a phantom doodle was until then. We kept him and he has the most beautiful coloring🥰

This was informative! I'll pass this along. I have a tuxedo mini-goldendoodle and people ask what he is all the time because they thought Goldendoodles come in tan or apricot. I've been telling people he's a black Goldendoodle who looks like he's wearing a tuxedo, but good to know tuxedo Goldendoodle is actually the name 😂. He's black with a white chest and white nose, a white stripe on the head. He's fixed but a lot of people say I should have bred him because his size and his tuxedo look is so stinken cute!!

I have a cream doodle and she has the most beautiful blue eyes
I've got a rescue pooch that was found to be 60% standard poodle, 31% golden retriever, and 9% Labrador retriever. She had none of the 220 health markers they test for. Hooray for hybrid vigor! She's got a course and wiry blue merle coat that's low maintenance, although she does shed quite a bit. Such an unusual looking dog.

Aww my neighbor has a red parti! It's so cute! I have a tan golden, but its 75% poodle and 25% Retriever, not the normal 50% 50%.
Tan is still really cute! We prefer a high % poodle too.

Phantom doodles have very distinct characteristics. It’s a pretty rare color in Goldendoodles! I see it a lot in Bernedoodles but not so much Goldendoodles.

I seen a light brown and white golden doodle I think the Parti goldenDoodle at the pet store literally 40 minutes ago. Took him out to play and I was impressed. I work 10 hours at Amazon and not sure if that’s good for a dog to be alone. I didn’t get him. He was 3700 and I would’ve bought him but my 10 hours only scare me he would be alone 6am till 6pm. Long day. I have a cat he loves being alone but idk a dog is different.
Yeah that would be tough to have a doodle at home for 10 hours. They are smart and would destroy your home due to lack of stimulation.

🐶 It's not known unless you did genetic testing prior to breeding. Chances are you will get some sort of mix between cream and parti, but the litter colors can vary widely.
We had two brandies in a litter.

I own a 4 moth old black goldendoodle... a girl, all of her sisters and 1 brother came out almost 100% black... her mom is a secod breed apricot golden doodle and her dad is also but brownish... She SHEDS like crazy, and has almost straight hair... only 2 came out curly....

Brindles are rare! It’s passed down from the Poodle side and they have a be a carrier for that gene. I would brindles, phantom, and tuxedos are the most rare! 😄

Doodles tend to lighten as they age! Silver is actually a pretty unique color. Black is a recessive genetic trait so it’s not that common.
for a black goldendoodle u only need a BBee or Bbee goldenretriever or f1, or f1b Goldendoodle and a brown poodle with bbEE OR a black poodle with BBEE. then u always will get a black Goldendoodle

Any multi-colored coat is usually more expensive and sold at a premium by breeders. I would say that tri color is the more expensive. A mix of browns, blacks, and whites is pretty rare.

What happened if we mix dad Merle and mom black and white what color they get ?
You typically don't want to mix two merle together (just letting you know if theres any chance the black and white is a merle. Mixing merle genes can lead to blindness, albino dogs, etc.
Merle is typically a recessive gene, so mixing black and white would result in the more dominant color which would be black and white. Some pups would probably be merle though.
I always ask my parents, “If it’s called a *Golden* doodle, how come some of them are black and white and other colors? “

Its mind blowing how people breed dogs back to back because of popularity the females are being bred over and over it’s hard on their bodies , but owners don’t care they only see dollar signs not the female dogs health - people paying thousands bucks basically for mutts
I’m waiting for the day the doodle crave fizzles out and the shelters are over run . People don’t read up on dog breeds they are high active dogs one should get a dog for their lifestyle not because of it’s popularity,and why pay money for greedy breeders when there are so many rescues and dogs in animal shelters needing homes ,after all the

All my pets I’ve had have been rescued my two poodles and my 2 cats wich I’ve had all of them for over 17 yrs till there last day on earth not till I bore of them or decide they don’t match my lifestyle as so many people unfortunately do .Adopt don’t shop is my philosophy .
Let's clear some things up . The AKC doesn't accept Doodles of ANY breed as a breed. They consider them Mongrels and will NOT allow registration other than to track lineage and keep records with them and participate in their events.
There are many many more breed colors of Doodle as there are Many color coats of the poodle.
We have an Apricot and white with ticking, a black, and a white.
AKC is NOT the be all end all and it's actually shameful how their snobbish standards have kept this breed along with Labradoodles and other doodle mixes from being recognized.
AKC and their policy of not outbreeding to say lines with CKC registration and DNA tests have been the downfall of many of their recognized breeds due to inbreeding and lack of genetic variation.

We are CKC registered and are going to dual register with a Doodle only organization. We also DNA test. Do yourself a favor if you want a doodle.
1. Make sure they provide a DNA test.
2. Ask about the generation and understand that which generation you pick can have direct impact on upkeep of coat, and coat type.
3. Understand poodles are a sporting breed and were bred by hunters to retrieve ducks. They are headstrong and rambunctious! Your doodle has it going and coming but the Golden side really calms them down a ton.
4. Most reputable breeders can literally tell you what colors the female should throw and what color you should breed them with to get X result. DNA testing has allowed us to get it to a science of sorts.
Lasty, enjoy your dog! I will never own another breed but Doodles after owning the 3 we have now. They are fantastic animals with so much to give.
I love doodles. The AKC will come around at some point. Honestly doodles are way more popular than 80% of the purebred AKC dogs.
