I'm a cassette deck nut, so I watched your breakdown and re-build of the mechanism carefully, as I have several problematic thrift store cassette decks. Ironically, my JVCs work great... It's a Pioneer, a Kenwood, an Optimus, and an Onkyo that have problems. Mostly likely belt issues on all these, but I won't be sure until I dig in. Thanks for tip on how to find the dead spot on a motor. I will order a speed test tape soon, but I also need a track alignment / azimuth tape for my Nakamichi MR-1 that has a head height adjustment for both the playback head and the record head (that a previous owner mal-adjusted). I have it ball-parked but would like to fine tune it.
Check Alex under A.N.T from head... forum - side for tape geeks. He might have something to calibrate equal to Nakamichi tapes. Height adjustment on Naks - usually best not to touch it because you will need a very special Nakamichi tape for it. Also I have never seen a worn head on 3 head Nak. A few other machines have also separate pl and rec heads eg JVC TD-V 3 headers.
This cassette mechanism is not simple but a luxury complicated one.Incoporates three motors and has a rotary position encoder similar to VCR's.In the simplest designs the capstan motor can also drive the winding machine,or the winding machine has its own motor for normal-reverse,but this one has a separate motor for every winding direction.Excellent machine in its era.
Super job! Patience is the name of this game and you have got tons of it. I like your JVC acronym. You could clean the heads when you have the mechanism taken out. Saves effort later on.
your "favourite" JVC stuff :D Actually i like this mechanism, it looks simple and reliable. To me JVC's are simple but good quality sounding components feuturing good functionality with few parts
That's the first JVC deck I've see where the transport was on the left. I hated how they had their decks reversed. Also, I find that the safest bet for copyright free music for RUclips is RUclips's own library. It's free and won't snag you.
Yes I have been downloading some of the youtube library. I generally use Musicbakery only because I have over 2,000 invested in it. When my company was churning out commercials and corporate videos we bought a bunch of their CDs so I am just making use of stuff I already bought.
Dude, you're a legend ! I love your videos. I've been collecting tape decks for around ten years now and have a nice little collection of Yamaha's, 70s Pioneer CT-F high end models and a host of desirable Nakamichi's. I'd love to watch you tackle Nak Dragon at some.point. I have one that needs some.work to figure out a muffled sound issue. The Nak system may be the culprit because it doesn't want to calibrate when asked to.. Anyways, keep up the great work 👍
Hello, Thanks for another great video. Could you please let me know if the playback / recording head on a 2 head cassette deck Sony TC KE 400S be replaced? I feel that there is a mild gap in the center of the head and the sound quality is not good even after cleaning and demagnetising the head.
I hope cassettes never die. Digital sounds great, but isn't as fun. Like to switch around to different formats. It's amazing how much empty space is inside those cassette decks.
Nice repair you know i had yo go look at my casset deck that im not using anymore couldn't remember what it was. I found it is a sony tc-k61 with sendust & ferrit head have no idea whatbthat means hopefuly that uts a good tape deck anyway as ive said previously i havent used it in years but it is still hooked up and does still turn on and motor rotats if i hit play so it appears if i stuck a tape in it it might still play it worked fine last time i remimber using it. That was probably 6 years ago im tonlazy to go and unhook it I also kinda feel as soon as i get ride of it ill want it again usalky how it happens so i keep holding on to it even though i dont use it.
Damn theres enough room in there to fit a class d 100w amplifier making it a hybrid unit, you could replace the tape detection switch with a photoresistor, thats a pretty good quality mechanism for a cheap machine actually, same one they used in their aluminium micro systems and they sounded absolutely fantastic, i make my own music so dont have these issues.
My Philips FC670 cassette deck when switched on, the head mechanism starts to click up and down constantly, I guess this is also because of a dirty mode switch?
sir can you please make an video on how to align auto reverse head and get it working right with its azimuth alignment? please sir I request you to make an video on it as I really find your videos helpful .
Thank you so much for making this video , you learn me a lot of maintenance tricks , want to ask you about the cleaning solvent you used to clean the mode switch , what the commercial name for it ? any equivalent for it ? also you once used another solvent to clean a cooling fan with loud noise & make it silent again , what is the commercial brand for that solvent as well ? thank you & wish you good luck.
Are there any good component, digital music players that play MP3 and flac that have folder skip and are inexpensive? I have this older component MP3 player that just has RCA L and R out that plays music off of SD cards and USB drives. It also has an FM radio. One of the features that I love about it is that if you long press on forward or rewind, it would skip one folder ahead or back. All of the MP3 player modules I've seen can only search on song at a time. It doesn't make it very convenient if you have many albums on a card. I don't even see these MP3 players for sale any more. It doesn't do flac so I have been interested in getting something that does play flac. It's important that I can skip folders. I like the simplicity that this player has. Just a simple LED number display is all I need.
Hi I've been meaning to ask what is making that 4khz-ish noise on your videos? It's at almost the same frequency as my mild tinnitus and kinda fatiguing. Great work as usual 👍
It could be just about anything. My overhead camera monitor is an old LCD screen and it has a fan that makes some noise. There is also a few CFL lamps in the shop, and some LED lights.
@@12voltvids You have a great video, I have a cassette changer that must have gotten dropped in shipping, nothing appears to be broken but it did derail the tray.
Normally I use my own recordings from my camcorder where I made my own sound effects including thunder and the sound of the rain and thunderstorm, I never get smack down by YT copyright match because, I use my own way by play around with my thunderstorm audio and never use any other music audio that it claimed it's royalty free including NCS (No Copyright Sound), Music Bakery, YT Music Library, you name it, I get leery about the music that might have a copyright patten in it from the devil of detail where I don't want to lose my YT page if I keep using the variety of music, so I figured I can use my own sound effects from my audio where I captured the sounds of the thunder, thunderstorm and rain.
Got news for you bud. Thieves will try to copyright that too. When I was young I studied guitar. I actually was quite good, and made some recordings of my solo playing of my own original music. This music had never need published anywhere, as I have the sole master recording on 1/4" reel to reel tape. I transferred that tape to CD many years ago, and have used it on 2 or 3 of my videos. I got a claim from someone in Italy claiming that the music was theirs, and I had to fight this claim. The burden fell on my shoulders to prove that the original recording was mine. They wanted a signed affidavit from the recording studio. I explained that it was not done in a recording studio, it had been recorded in a home studio of a local musician whom passed away in 1986 (I made the recording when in 1979) Eventually the fraudulent claim went away. I have had visual copyright claims make on visual images that I have shot as well. One of my scenery videos had a take down claim placed against it by somone claiming they owned the rights. I fired a response back that I had the original camera files with the metadata (it's great to have GPS data embedded on the original camera files as that is a time stamp that can not be altered) to prove that I shot the original footage. That claim was released too, but these crooks will try every tactic they can if they think they can make a buck.
Good job dave :-D It seems not bad for a basic tape deck, but using a video recorder style mode switch was a bit silly. I liked the very short head ribbon, less chance of picking up noise from other circuits and very little capacitance in the ribbon to alter the high frequency impedence. And easy disconnect cables.
Mark Anderson I'm used to seperate switches on tape decks. (old git ) I have a pioneer ct200 deck that has buttons to operate it, an old design but it seems to work ok. It has one odd special chip, if it dies ill have to make one in logic, i'm sure its unobtainium. The mechanism jumps about like a rabbit with a promise of sex :-D
Well first of all: the picture on your channel is much, much better. The deck - this thing is empty inside. That mechanism popped out like new born from the chassis - this one is an easy to work on. If you don't use them for a while they some how stop working - the Sankyo on Naks has been bagged by commutator dead stop on the mechanism control motor, oxidation on switches, ... , so other machines most likely have similar problems. I like the idea of having the rec/playback amp close to the head, but this one has motor regulator instead. I use Rubber Renue for cleaning capstan roller - seems to work better than alcohol. Now thanks for the royalty free information - really. My video with my DIY speakers got removed by RUclips because of the damn copyrights, royalties and ECM. For gods sake - it's just a pair loudspeakers playing well recorded music. If it sounded like crap, I wouldn't make the video in the first place, you copyright idiots.
Its called bit rate. I opened up the throttle on the encoder from 10 Mbits to 40mbits. The down side is the files are 4x as big, and take 4x as long to upload. I recently upgraded my internet package to unlimited data so there is no data cap now and I can afford to waste bandwidth. Still on copper service here though so it is still pretty slow compared to pure fiber.
You encouraged me to fix one of my radios that stopped working! Here is my first fix video, what do you think? ruclips.net/video/09wVawQXULc/видео.html
