Thanks for the video. Finished replacement on my 2007.5 LMM. Bottom bolt is 21mm, top nut is 15mm; Bilstein's replacement is 17mm. 6mm holds the center if you dont use locking pilers. Plastic wheel well covers changed to be longer which makes access more difficut but found raising the front end til wheels came off ground gave enough room to hug tire and work blindly without removing wheels. Yours was the only instruction that didnt remove wheels. stock shocks had failed by 50k :(
24-186940 would be the shock to get to remove your shock extender. Currently you have about 15"+/- at full extension with your extender kit. Reinstalling the oem bracket, ordering the longer 5100 will give you18.48" at full extension giving you back those 3" in ride quality and 12.95" in collapse. 4 wheel parts is awesome at customer service, and would help you out to exchange them, IMO. Great video.
On my F350 I have replaced the motor once and the transmission twice and I have yet to wear out my Bilstein 5100's. Over 327,000 miles. By far the best there is.
I have some Bilstein HD shocks on my Dodge Ram and I was so impressed that I bought and installed a set on my fathers Silverado. They are by far the best shocks that money can buy and they have made a big difference in ride comfort and off-road capability/control. These shocks have allowed me to comfortably take obstacles off road at higher speeds. They also work great to improve control when carrying or towing a load. I have previously tried the top level Ranchos and I can confirm that in comparison, there is no comparison. Bilstein shocks are amazing and are by far worth the money.
I have a 2004 Chevy 2500 hd Duramax with only 64000 miles and replaced my factory shocks to the Bilstein 5100. That truck drove like a bull dozer on a broken up concrete field and I really only drove it when I had to. Well the old shocks were flat so I was riding on the springs only. After putting on the shocks from Bilstein I couldn't believe it the truck drove great and no more throwing my boat up and down when going over a bump. I also pull a 21 iclass skeeter with a Yamaha 300 hpdi and seeing that big motor on my boat bouncing was horrible. Anyway just wanted thank you for the help and of course I had just worked 12 hour shift at Cooper Tire building tires so I was wore out. By the way if you ever buy a Cooper Tire my name is in the tire as TDCLAY and a date sticker...
The shocks that come off (with thru bolts) are nice to reuse on a trailer......especially a boat trailer. Because of the length ,it allows you easily mount at an angle to the axle ,which also adds lateral "dampening" . I first discovered this with rear shocks off an 88 bronco 2 on a 3000 pound trailer..
These are great shocks. I just put mine on the other day. Bilstein had some bushing problems a few years back. I think it was the fronts only. If you have/had (last 2 digits) "H0" then those are the 1s with the bad bushings. "H1" are the 1s with the updated bushings. If you have/had front "H0" Bilstein would send you out updated bushing.
Go to the forums on diesel place or duramax forum and search cab isolators. They cost around 130 bucks and take about an hour to install. They help stop the kick in the kidney feeling when going over expansion joints on highways. They are a must to install on your truck if you have a Crew Cab.
Just installed 5100's on my 06 Duramax with a 6 inch lift and all I can say is WOW! It feels like a whole new truck now, much better ride than before. Well worth the $80ea.
The 5100 is designed to be used in lifted trucks. The different sub-numbers are for the shock length so that you get the right shock for 2, 4, or 6" lifts.
I think this is what I need for my new Jeep JK. Has a dealer installed 3" lift with the white Mopar shocks and sometimes I feel like I'm bull riding. The streets in Plano are so bad it's murder.
Just got done doing this on my 2007. My air compressor is down and after a full day work it was easy but still a work out. I used the monrow reflex however.
Great video: detailed, informative....also some bonus content which helps explain why you need to support local businesses and a green strap-on :) I'm definitely getting me some of these for my Cummins now. Thank you for a great install and review video.
hey frisco. Just wanted to let you know i appreciate your videos man. i have an 08 duramax and your videos help a lot. i also noticed you like boats and skis. i have a 1968 donzi and an 2008 seed rap too. Appreciate the videos man!!!
I recently purchased another duramax a ccsb 03 zf6 truck 6" lift with Rancho shocks on it it bounces horribly.. I've always ran the bilstein 5100 on all my other trucks cant wait to get a set hopefully that fixes all the bouncing.
I have a lift like you, and i have the shock extensions on. there about 4 inches. so i went and got the bilstein shocks that are extended, hopefully itll work a bit better.
@dfoote22 All of the 3/4 ton trucks ride very stiff. Especially anything with a solid axle. I drove them all and chose the Duramax for a number of reasons. For my price range I could only get a 6.0 Ford which we all know are very bad, and you could not hear yourself thing in the Dodge. The Duramax gave me the look of my old 1500 with all the pulling power of a diesel. I think all the the brands are good trucks, but I just like the Duramax better. Please do not turn this into brand bashing
Thank you for the great video. Sorry other people have to complain all the time about videos for their own self insuecrities. I love all your videos. Your boat fiberglass video also helped my wife and I out a lot. Keep the videos coming brother. I have a 2007 LBZ 2WD and this video made me want to go with the Bilsteins as well. I was on the fence about the racho 5000's or theses. Everyone seems to like the "cadillac ride quality" of these better. Hope yall enjoyed the trip to the Texas coast. What city do you live in?
that is true about buying things over the internet and not having sales tax on things. But, you can claim things that you buy over the internet so that you are taxed on them at the end of the year, you do this in your state return. Or at least that is where I do it. That way I get a good deal if the local places won't match the price online and I pay my taxes on them too.
I just got some for my Bronco, they better not be the KYBs.. I have a pair of Monomaxes in the rear, don't hate them but they're too stiff, causes my tires to bounce at speed. Gotta have less upward damping and more downward. I think they'll be less stiff though, was impossible to compress the Monomaxes by hand and he did it with the Bilsteins pretty easily.
I know this is an 8 year old post, but I have to 100% disagree! Respectfully so, but disagree indeed. Nothing rides as smooth as the Silverado's. That independent front is the reason. I have an 06 2500HD duramax, and two F350 powerstrokes, one being a dually(dually in my profile pic with single axle fronts) Had several f250 powerstrokes, Rams, and an 05 LLY duramax over the years) If I were daily driving only, I wouldn't have the fords. I won't own another ram. Period. I love the smooth and plush ride of the silverado when not working them.... It's what my lady drives now. She decided she liked how it rides and drives, even better than she likes her car. Now, in my experience, for work...... I'm a Ford fan through and through. They are just a workhorse of a truck. And I prefer the cab room, the bulletproof dana 60 fronts, etc. But they ride like a truck, for sure. Up to 2017 is still noisier in cab than the 06 duramax. Never bothers me. But the ol' lady notices every bit of noise and comfort. With comfort, I'm still more comfortable in my fords. Just like the "horrible 6.0" in the ford. The 6.0 was one of my better trucks. But I deleted it, decked heads, studded it, and a laundry list of things to keep it from being problematic. Now that may be different now, but we are talking about a 5 year old truck.
A few stats after doing mine w same shocks. On an LBZ. Lower bolt torque spec is 59 lb ft (80 N•m). Upper Nut is 15lb ft (20N•m). Upper nut OEM was better fit with 15mm instead of 5/8. Bilstein top nut is 17mm.
I've got an 03 silverado 1500 z71, I definitely need to upgrade my shocks, I'm used to it, but it's bumpy enough to make my passengers sick. I think these shocks still might be to stiff for my truck since it's much lighter than yours, I'll have to look around for some softer shocks.
@dfoote22...Jays a smart man..... thats why he owns a GMC not a ford. You too one day just might see the light and own a GMC. till than..... well ya just gunna have to be happy with that thing you got.
I believe the rear shocks are universal but I'm not sure about the fronts. The rear shocks should only take you ten minutes to change so id just test it out if I were you
Nice video! I noticed that your bolt on the bottom of the front shock was put through the extender backwards. Are there any clearance issues between the nut and the CV axle? I know why you did though because there isnt enough clearance from the back side to put the bolt through the extender without hitting the CV axle. At least that was a problem for me anyway.
I just ordered mine for my f150. I just got the front though. My rear shocks are pretty good still, but non the less I'm going to order the rear shocks in about a month when I have the money. Where in Texas do you live? I live in San Antonio, but I didn't recognize any of the terrain in the video.
Next time you install the rear shock use a small hydraulic jack and lift the bottom of the shock in place. That way even his kids could install the shocks.
I have one of their steering shocks. Its the one on the steering rods. I would change my front shocks but i cant get the bottom bolts out. They have those flag nuts on there. I hate em! Lol!
`Excellent video; Older post/any updates, Have a 2007 GM Sierra 3500 Classic 2wd Duramax/ stock shocks, 118000 miles, ..looking for "Best Smooth Ride," are these Bilstein 5100 shocks still preferred 2020? You have sold me, So Far!
If you're llifted, I'd go 5100. If you're stock, go with the bilstein 4600(blue and yellow shocks) Bilstein still remains the top affordable shock. By far!
Hi Frisco.... I want to install the 6" lift like you did on your truck ( I'd sow you doing that in other video) but I use my truck mostly for work and towing goose neck trailers so I decided not to.... so now I want to do 3" front 2" rear leveling kit with bilstein shocks.. do you think I will have good quality ride with this tipe of lift ??
hola amigo espero todo bien tengo una ram 2500 cummins 08 y me gustaria saber si estas bilstein son buenas levantan algo? en la cabina es mucho mas comod el andar? gracias..
If you can, tell me alittle more about these cab isolators that chevy recalled? I have a 07 Classic and haven't heard anything about it. Wondering if i need to have this done to my pickup. I've been tossing up the idea of getting the 5100 or spending half the price and going with the rancho 5000s. Leaning alittle more towards the Bilsteins, everyone on the forums rave about them. Like I said, please send me a message about the recall you had replaced. Thanks
@hatefordshit ..I'll agree Jay is a smart guy, however, hearing how he starts the video with "I own a duramax diesel...and I've complained about the ride for a LONG TIME"..etc..etc and then he goes on to say that he's had to spend a lot of money on after market parts to get it right - that kinda says it all right there. And my 2000 model diesel thing I got with 210k miles on it will still be running strong when they're dragging your GMC to the dump. So ya I'm happy!
I have a 97 k1500, Ive been considering bilstien shocks for awhile now, but I've been debating between either HD shocks or these 5100 shocks? I plan on doing offloading but I very rarely tow anything, what would you recommend?
Good job on the video. I have an 04 Chevy Duramax 2500 HD. I am in the market for new shocks. I tow a 29’ travel trailer. Do you think The shocks you put on in this video will work on my truck? What are your thoughts.
hey man...just curious.. were your tortion keys cranked up at all? not all the way cranked..but as in adding some good stress on the tortion bars? just curious on the perspective for these shocks...
Thanks for the video. Finished replacement on my 2007.5 LMM.
Bottom bolt is 21mm, top nut is 15mm; Bilstein's replacement is 17mm. 6mm holds the center if you dont use locking pilers.

How the hell do you have an 04 duramax with only 64,000 on it? That truck hasn't even been broken in yet. That's nearly showroom quality.
These and a steering stabilizer changed my truck x10.
These are great shocks. I just put mine on the other day.

@FriscoBoater's Garage Do you have a video on the installation of the isolators?
Just installed 5100's on my 06 Duramax with a 6 inch lift and all I can say is WOW! It feels like a whole new truck now, much better ride than before. Well worth the $80ea.
what shocks did you have with lift before doing the 5100s
When you say better, what do you mean?
Hey what shocks yiu got in the rear I don’t got the option to get a 6inch in my rear only 4 inch
Im from new Hampshire and its amazing to see caliper without rust. My dads 2013 suburban calipers are already rusty
Awesome video have my Bilsteins need to get them on the 2002 Sierra 1500HD !!!
Awesome video, thanks for making it! I need th get new shocks for my 1994 F250 with a slide in camper. I probably need heavy duty shocks.
The bottom bolts and nuts are 21mm. And, you can get to the top nut with a long 2 or 3 foot extension. The black organ boot always goes up.
I installed my shocks the same way you did. I love having a truck.
Thanks so much for taking the time to film and edit this!
I also picked up the same 5100's from 4wheel parts local store for my old 1995 dodge cummins, by far the best thing to ever happen to my ageing dodge!
The 5100 is designed to be used in lifted trucks. The different sub-numbers are for the shock length so that you get the right shock for 2, 4, or 6" lifts.
@zepfan2032 If I remember right there was a bushing and washer on both sides in the from.
I think this is what I need for my new Jeep JK. Has a dealer installed 3" lift with the white Mopar shocks and sometimes I feel like I'm bull riding. The streets in Plano are so bad it's murder.
Bilstein 5100s are probably the best shock for the money for nearly any truck or SUV.
Just got done doing this on my 2007. My air compressor is down and after a full day work it was easy but still a work out. I used the monrow reflex however.
Thanks for the info man. The video really help me out. I got a set of Monroe but I return them back. I just order same ones you install in your HD.
Great video: detailed, informative....also some bonus content which helps explain why you need to support local businesses and a green strap-on :)
I'm definitely getting me some of these for my Cummins now. Thank you for a great install and review video.

I did fox and was blown away!!!
as i started to watch this video i realized it looks like the fronts are the same. give it a shot!
hells ya support your local businesses..dope shocks man

@70short
Not sure. I only sell the mitsubishi projector and optoma line. They are more custom oriented.
Hey friscojarretts I put the bilstein 5100 and don't bounce anymore I love these shocks
kinda late but I just installed mine! drives ten times better
Thank you for the great video. Sorry other people have to complain all the time about videos for their own self insuecrities. I love all your videos. Jay.....Please wear glasses working under the truck.A trip to the ER is a bad start for a road trip.Great videos.
Yes, you buy them on whether you have a stock truck or lifted truck.
Just installed mine!
So funny to watch this review and install...then see a road right by my house. I am in Panther Creek! That road is ROUGH!
that is true about buying things over the internet and not having sales tax on things. @FriscoJarretts
you bet...was just pokin' a bit of fun - really didn't expect haters to pounce. At any rate - no more argueing here.
Great vid. Very str8 forward and like fact you are avg joe like me. Hard worker likes DIY stuff. Nice
To get an even better ride - get an F250 Superduty! =D Thanks for the video though...keep em coming!
Between the cab space, and seats not being as overly cushioned, along with the overall control and visibility, it's just what I dig.
Everyone is different on what they like.
Just like the "horrible 6.0" in the ford. The 6.0 was one of my better trucks. But I deleted it, decked heads, studded it, and a laundry list of things to keep it from being problematic. I've had all of the "BIG 3" Blow a piston or lift heads, and or both. No truck is immune. The egr system and head bolts on the 6.0 was a bad design though I'll admit.
Anyway...... That's all. Just came here to say, nope the Silverado's certainly ride better than Ford and dodge/ram.
But Ford is still my top spot in truck brands
Take care
Sheesh 80 bucks a pop 9 years ago, theyre still about 94 bucks a pop!!
@mistermamaluigi Please do not get into brand bashing here. That is not what my channel is all about. Every brand has its pros and cons, and for the 2006 model year the duramax was out performing the ford (the problems with the 6.0 in the for was a major issue for me) and the doge IMHO. good vid. wish I watched this before having replacement shocks put on.
Good Point Jay. Thanks for the Street sign. LOL.

I prefer buying local for the added reason of being able to see where its made. If the product comes from a certain country, usually I just walk away.
Awesome vid I will be making the purchase
@dfoote22...Jays a smart man..... thats why he owns a GMC not a ford. You too one day just might see the light and own a GMC. till than..... well ya just gunna have to be happy with that thing you got.
So far so good.
stock shocks usually last ten thousand miles unless you get upgrades with it new
Just north of Dallas
very good review, thanks
LMAO!!! So true. The Fox shocks are awesome too, but expensive.
I believe the rear shocks are universal but I'm not sure about the fronts. The rear shocks should only take you ten minutes to change so id just test it out if I were you
Thanks
No light grey Monroe reflexs .. I love chevy trucks but the ride is rough I have a 4in drop in the rear to even it out with the shackels
I just put Monroe reflexs on my 2006 silverado crew cab 1500 ls nd still rides rough
The KYB monomax are the same shock same internals just made by the japanese where the bilstein is germany but the KYB are 25 % cheaper
I heard the Monroe shocks are pretty rough... Are they the yellow ones?
Thanks for the informative video! It looks like you live in AZ.
@mistermamaluigi No worries.
Thats a good question. I am not sure.
Make one for a 2010 Tacoma. This was a great video!!
I just ordered mine for my f150. I just got the front though. My rear shocks are pretty good still, but non the less I'm going to order the rear shocks in about a month when I have the money. Where in Texas do you live? I live in San Antonio, but I didn't recognize any of the terrain in the video.
@3579XX Just clicked 42 thousand today. I bought this 2006 Last Feb with a little over 16k on the clock.
That is exactly where that road is. It looks to be closed now.
Yay new vid!
Next time you install the rear shock use a small hydraulic jack and lift the bottom of the shock in place. That way even his kids could install the shocks.
Great point. Would make it easier
Did you have to jack up the truck to relieve the suspension for the shock replacement?
Wouldn’t have had to fight compressing it if you jacked the tuck up a little.
So what all do you have installed on your Duramax back then? Those shocks and then what are the cab insulted?
I have one of their steering shocks. Its the one on the steering rods. I would change my front shocks but i cant get the bottom bolts out. They have those flag nuts on there. I hate em! Lol!
`Excellent video; Older post/any updates, Have a 2007 GM Sierra 3500 Classic 2wd Duramax/ stock shocks, 118000 miles, ..looking for "Best Smooth Ride," are these Bilstein 5100 shocks still preferred 2020? You have sold me, So Far!
If you're llifted, I'd go 5100. If you're stock, go with the bilstein 4600(blue and yellow shocks)
Bilstein still remains the top affordable shock. By far!
No. Shocks to not raise your truck, that is what the springs do.

Do you think the 5100 is worth getting over the 4600 shocks and struts? I'm trying to debate on which to go with for my vehicle
Quick question: can i only replace the rear shocks? Keep the factory front shocks.
I plan on doing offloading but I very rarely tow anything, what would you recommend?
when you put in the shock extenders, did you get any lift?
he said he has a leveling kit.
I have a single cab dodge......its not 4x4 but I was just wanting to smooth out my ride......are the good for the job?
Is this pretty similar to a 2006 Silverado 4x4 1500? Was thinking about getting these shocks and everything is stock on the truck.
If your HD was at stock height, why didnt you use the 4600 series instead of the 5100 series?
Good job on the video. I have an 04 Chevy Duramax 2500 HD. I am in the market for new shocks. I tow a 29’ travel trailer. Do you think
The shocks you put on in this video will work on my truck? What are your thoughts.
They should. As long as your truck is stock ride height
A-Plus for BF Goodrich All terrain T/As!!!!!!!!!!!
I am almost certain those bolts are not SAE
Man I wish it was that easy for a tacoma
Hey on a different note what projector is better panasonic ea7000 or a epson 8700 ub?
Did you have to Jack up the vehicle at all to do any removal of the old shocks, or installation of the new ones?
Skot Ward I did not. I had good access with my truck.
$80ea isn't expensive for quality shocks. Look at the cost of performance shocks for cars - it's far more expensive.
hey man...just curious.. were your tortion keys cranked up at all? not all the way cranked..but as in adding some good stress on the tortion bars? just curious on the perspective for these shocks...
At this time they were turned a lot.
oh ok, thanks. did you turn them down at all? if so, how much? how did you like the difference?
