Benefits of Sitting on Floor: Why you should care

- In this video I am explaining the benefits of sitting on the floor and why you should care.
1) Floor sitting improves joint/muscle flexibility and mobility over time as positions of sitting on floor will require you to move all your muscles and joints than sitting on chair.
2) Floor sitting creates more movement options. There are more ways to get up from floor than chair and there are more ways of sitting on floor than on chair.

HELPFUL HINTS
If you are not used to sitting on floor, use a couple of cushions to raise your body. As you feel more comfortable and you notice that you are not having to lean back on your hands to support, reduce to one cushion, and if needed, use progressively thinner cushions until you can sit comfortably.
To help your body adjust to floor sitting, start 5 minutes and increase in small increments, to 7 minutes, then 10, and 15 and 20.

Awesome, that makes a lot of sense ! Just found your channel and subscribed ! Thank you. ;)
Wow! That was super useful. I am a 51 year old who has been doing Crossfit for just over a year. It's tough but I'm looking for things in my everyday life to increase my mobility and athleticism. Your advice was spot on. I am curious to see your other content.
I noticed that my body is getting picky as I age. I need multiple pillows when sleeping or sitting on a couch. There’s no good reason for this in my case other than this body is just getting weaker by being surrounded in “softness”. No more!
I’m going to sit on the floor at home most of the time. I think I’ll sleep on the floor too for a while. This will help with endurance in sitting mediation too. Thank you for your advice!
🤔🤔🤔how are u now
I completely agree with everything you said. As humans used to travel and our positions always depended on our body and how we felt. We naturally fed our muscles and joints whatever they needed. But if you need to be on a computer all day and forget about your body your health will go down. Even if we have to sit down all day we should still listen to our bodies and be as healthy as we can be. Sometimes we need someone else to point that out. That’s why now I sit at a desk or on a couch when I am tired and want to relax while I use my computer and I sit on the floor with a pad most of the time. Have fun with your explorations!!
*Sitting on the floor may not be for everyone, especially if you have not done that for many years. However, if you gradually allow your body to adapt to sit on the floor, your body will have more movement options over time. These body adaptations won't happen over night, but they will happen if you create demands consistently.

I would appreciate a video on how to sit on the floor with a floor desk and not get pain while writing/hunching over
Thanks for leaving the comment. I can certainly make a video on that topic. I will add your request to my list! Stay tuned!
Here it is!

Yes!
Sometimes I also think it has to do with the height of the desk.
@@TaroIwamoto thanks for this.
I will check it out. I have been bothered by posture with sitting on the floor while working. My posture in a chair is bad enough already. 😅😂. I hope the video is related to that too

65 and sitting on floor. I’m arthritic here and there but in spine as well. Floor period. For T.v., eating, guests sit in fold out chairs with cushion options when visiting. Especially after western sitting practices, I.e.”the comfy chair”, caused a ruptured disc in lumbar spine. I now have completely eradicated that problem, without surgery. I also practice the “third world squat” while in leisure mode. Started 2 years ago and I can’t believe the changes in how the mechanics of my body operate now.
Thanks for sharing your story! I believe that floor sitting as well as squats can have significant benefits for our health.
Good for you! You've inspired me to try harder!
@@joulesisgypsy You can always modify something so its not too uncomfortable, and gradually make changes as your body adapts.
@@TaroIwamoto Thank you! Flexibility in mind and body right? I'm working on it.
@@joulesisgypsy you know it!
This makes a lot of sense, I much prefer chairs that are deep enough I can readjust much like I would sitting on the floor. The body is not designed to stay in one position for extended periods of time
Yes! Our body is designed to move!
I actually also sit/ lay on the floor, often just on my stomach when I am home on the pc. Got my laptop set up on a workout mat that I use. I think this really helps me keep my back and neck healthy. Generally speaking, I never have back pain or neck pain and this makes sense why.
Very good info. I suspect that the act of getting up off the floor (or ground) -- the rising up from a squatting positions, provides a bit of an excellent leg strengthening exercise. Thanks for posting.
Absolutely!
Yes i also experience so much energy and health when sitting on the floor 💪💪💪👏👏👏👏💙💙
Thank you for pointing floor sitting benefits, and looking good while doing it yourself. Considering getting rid of couch. Looked at other content on your channel and subscribed - you provide good content.
Elena, Thank you very much for subscribing to my channel and leaving the comment! Yes !
Thank you for shedding light on this most simple human activity.
Even if only for an hour it makes total sense to spend part of your day on the floor.
Any contact with this grounding opens the awareness of that felt presence with direct experience.
Whether in stretching , meditation or just plain day dreaming.
It can only be a good thing.
Thank you! There is something about connect with the ground where we all learned how we relate to the outside world during first year of our life. Connecting with the ground to rediscover our earlier experience is very healthy for our body and mind, I think.
This is something I must definitely practice. Trying to keep my pelvic forward as I sit in these different positions. It doesn’t seem like the back will hold up straight without support. A little at a time
yes a little at a time and that will add up over time, and you'll make improvements!
@@TaroIwamoto this might not be a good question, but I’ll ask it. Is it alright to sit in my movement bias when I’m not doing the movements? It’s hard to stay in the best posture all day
@@warnerbeckett3rd931 In my opinion, there is no bad movement. What's bad or not desirable is that you don't have many movement options and are not aware of your habitual movement patterns, in which case you're limited to your own bias. We all have movement bias, and that is just normal and natural. I don't think it is bad to be in your movement bias as long as you are aware and able to move into other places at your own will. I slouch, but I don't consider slouching as a bad movement because I am aware of doing that and know i can move out anytime, and i do move in/out of my habitual patterns often. If you make an effort to stay in the "best posture", perhaps that will become a bad posture as you strain yourself.
@@TaroIwamoto ok, I see your point. Thanks brother💪🏽
im only 15 but have a lot of back, lower shoulder, and hip pain from sitting, ill try this and hopefully it works
This is the main benefit of working from home alternating from standing at the desk to sitting on the floor at the desk.
Its nice to have more movement options!
Hi Taro, love this video but the volume and sound of this video makes it very hard for me to understand as English is my second language. Would it be possible to make another version of this video with an overdub explanation of what you were saying with clearer sound? Thank you in advance and keep up the great content!

I am working from home today and I don’t have a desk office chair set up yet bc my place is new… so I’m gonna sit on the floor. knowing it’s actually better for makes me feel good and I’ll probably ditch a home office setup anyway lol
if you're open to the idea of floor living lifestyle, then, you can use a low coffee table and cushion and set up your computer appropriately:)
Hi Taro, thx for sharing the benefits. My entire back started hurting alot after changing to a new sofa a few years ago. I started sitting on the floor because it was more comfortable, it makes a lotta sense now after hearing your explanations! But I hurt my right knee recently from skipping rope and cannot squat / sit on the floor without feeling a lot of pain and discomfort. Will try elevating with something on the floor as what you have recommended, tq. Have subscribed to ur channel as well :)
Thanks!!
Lmao I’m here because I live in an apartment and there’s very loud kids outside my window so I plan on hanging out in my closet space for the meantime. I’ll sit on the floor and do my homework as well with these tips. Thanks
But a noisecancelling headset my brother!

I have been floor sitting all my life. It actually hurts to sit in a chair for over ten minutes. My legs go flat when I sit cross legged, because of the flexibility I have from making it a constant habit. I am right now sitting on my bed, which is a thick memory foam mattress on the floor, because I also sleep on the floor. Instant exercise, constant exercise
I am 69 years old.
Starting today I am going to sit on the floor. I write my updates here
Nice! Please give yourself a lot of time and allow your bodies to adapt gradually.
And what happened?
It's been 10 months. What happened?
Hope you're good.
FLOOR GANG OUH
Hi Taro would you suggest exercises to relieve nerve pain I am 2 weeks post op knee replacement and haven’t been able to sit or sleep because of the pain. Meds don’t help …I miss sitting on floor.
my morning routine video might help with that. that can be done on bed.
@@TaroIwamoto thank you just did this felt great❤️will keep doing this
my body seems to like laying lower on the floor too. when I do my stretches in the am I feel better being on the floor.
Getting connected with the ground provides us so many benefits!
Something "real" and interesting happens when one is literally close to the Earth. When I was in the military I once went on a 20 plus day mission where I had to sleep on the ground either in a sleeping bag or between two blankets. I'd sometimes scoop out a comfortable place in the ground to level it out a bit, and to remove rocks, sticks and insects. It actually did not take long for it to become very comfortable, and I noticed that my dreams were much more pleasant. I'm not a "hippie type" of guy, but I think it was something about the Earth being against your body and it turning you with it. When I returned to the barracks, I could not immediately sleep in my bunk. I had to sleep on the floor next to my bunk for about a week while I gradually got used to sleeping in the bunk again. I thought that was interesting.
very cool! Thanks for sharing your experience.
This might sound crazy but the reason I'm here is I want to find a way to work on my laptop while camping where I have to bring the smallest amount of extra things as possible (i.e. no camp chairs) Thanks for the insights!
just a little creativity can open up new possibilities! enjoy camping!
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your support!!
After sitting on the floor, usually my hip joints hurt. What to do?
The pain of my hip joints starts when I spent a day or two on a tatami mat room in a Japanese style hotel (ryokan).
the problem is not sitting on the floor, but the problem is lack of movement for long period of time while sitting on the floor, i think. i would try to incorporate many sitting positions and change frequently.
@@TaroIwamoto Thank you! I'll try.
@@vestaosto you are welcome
Aren't all that sitting positions on the floor bad for circulation, especially in the legs and knees?
not necessarily. The biggest benefit of sitting on the floor is more movement and mobilization getting in and out from sitting position. not so much in specific sitting positions. Lack of movement is really detrimental to our health as we know. So floor sitting promotes more movement than chair sitting, and that is what i am really after.
Goodby couch!
What about squatting ?
I talked about the benefits of squatting in another video. Squatting is a very functional movement and activity
thank for you video but barely can hear you voice
I apologize for the low voice on that video. The more recent videos were recorded with a better microphone so the sound quality should be better.
The position he sit at first called as what?
are you referring to the position I'm in at the beginning of this video? I am not sure what that position is called. I'm sorry..
I heard another youtuber call it a fishers sitting or something like that.
His channel is called "Movemore MP". His content is also about floor culture, rom etc..
I need a tip now
A tip for sitting on the floor comfortably?
If so, its on my list. I will make a short video to address that topic soon. If you need a tip for other topics, can you specify your question?
Does sitting on the floor reduces the butt fat??
never thought about that! very interesting question! I guess it'll depend on how much you'll move while sitting the floor.
