I can totally relate to this. I learned to live on the floor in other parts of the world when I was younger. It's always a bit weird when Europeans come to my house - they always expect tables and chairs, but people from other cultures are usually completely ok with getting comfortable on the ground.

I've always preferred sitting on the floor, since a child. I just find it so much more comfortable and there's more scope for movement. I have a desk job, and I find it so difficult and rigid and stagnant having to sit in one position for 8 hours...

As a writer myself, I agree with you to q great amount. it’s always important as people who work In the creative field that we ensure our surroundings are not contradictory to our personality , that our mind isn’t constantly distracted by the things around us and is instead - inspired.
And so, I’ve always appreciated your working space for how you’ve reflected your simplistic personality onto it, it’s so amazing to have one particular way to write and one particular space. I am gonna go try sitting on the floor now bieeee😃

    • @liamburkeofficial

Just seen this comment and that's soooo true about making sure your surroundings aren't contradictory to your personality. Think as artists it's easy to lose sight of creativity outside of the actual process of writing/performing/doing the actual art, and forget that having that same creativity in our surroundings and the rest of our lives is important to helping stimulate and maintain our creative process!! 📝

I love sitting on the floor next to the couch to write or on the rocks and the sand next to the river. I only do that sometimes though. I’m going to try sitting on the floor much more often and see how I feel. I love how you implemented stretching and different practices while you were writing.. taking a break to stretch, and then getting back at it. I image this makes you much more present and slows the time down. This was a great video! 😁!

I’m absolutely going to try this! My hips and back feel so locked up from spending most of the day sitting to write.I used to make a lot more time for dancing and other activities. Considering I love floor work as a dance style, this would be a perfect way to fit in some five or 10 minute movement breaks right near where I’m writing. -
I absolutely love your channel! Great content. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.

  • @wakeoftheflood2

Iv'e been sitting on the floor since about 2014. It only recently occurred to me that its probably more healthy to do so...and when I thought about it, I realized that my lower back hasn't given me the trouble that it used to before 2014. To be frank, I don't stretch or exercise much, though I am active throughout the day at work. I'm 40yo man, and my body is slender and looks and feels the same as it was when I was 20.
Side note: I have that exact same cushion that you use in the video :)

I'm definitely going to give this a try! I've been sitting at a conventional desk for so long that I've gotten bored, and upon watching this video, I think it's because my set-up places constraints on my natural tendency and desire to squirm around and move. Watching this video has also got me thinking about trying to incorporate some minimalism into my life-though I don't think I have the willpower to try diving into such a lifestyle head-first, I figure I can at least try out some baby steps and see if that way of living suits me and makes me happier. (Especially considering that as it is, my bedroom, which is also my workspace, is filled with clutter, which doesn't exactly please me.) All in all, great video, Kate! This is the first I've watched from you since subscribing a couple days ago, and I can tell your channel is swiftly going to become one of my favorites.

I‘ve just spent my first work day on the floor of my room sitting on a yoga mat with my low nightstand as a „desk“ and it‘s really given me the opportunity to get so much more movement in so I‘m less gittery. Also I can stretch all the time and don‘t get uncomfortable and restricted in a chair. And lastly I had a way better posture because my back was working with me much more than when I sat in a chair. I‘m certain that if I keep this up my back will be hella strong. So excited about this.

I like to sit on one or two folded Mexican yoga blankets. I can sit on it so that the front of my pelvic bowl is off the blanket, making the alignment of my spine, neck & shoulders so much more relaxed. I also like to sit in Seiza or with my legs stretched out in front of me. It hurts my knees to sit the way you're supposed to in a chair. When I'm sitting in a chair, I usually change the positions of my legs and hips, sitting "incorrectly" for the sake of relieving stiffness / pain. Having a quiet mind and allowing for physical flexibility and movement are so important! ❤️

Nice video! I've been floor sitting for a couple of months now and came on to find others doing it and how they set up their space. Currently using a coffee table and a diy 3" step stool with a rug and cushion. I'll look into that wedge since I feel like I need a kneeling stool with the tilted seat. Ironically, when I lived in an rv, I converted the dinette into a desk space and didn't start doing the floor desk until I moved into a house. I subscribed and will look into your other vids. :)

I have been sitting on the floor for a week now and oh boy, is it painful lol. My back is super stiff, my knees hurt as well. I'm hoping that I eventually get the hang of this. I will say, I move A LOT more now, so that's a plus! I was super sedentary before, but I'm moving every 5 minutes at the very least to a different position and stretching out, so I know my body has to be getting some sort of plus from this!

I did sit on the floor for a long time until I broke my foot and my 5th metatarsal in my foot never healed or joined back together and i have been able to regain function and use it without surgery but, i can no longer sit on my foot. I cross my legs and even under my knee is too much on my foot. I had to change alot if things after from shoes, how i sit and for a long time i had to change how i dressed just for my foot. Im starting a research project and its time to set up a work space and consideration for whats getting me active and engaged but grounded into my work and comfortable for long enough. I get impatient and fidget and i cnt stay at a computer desk chair i cant sit for long enough and find myself walking away and wondering around if i dont have a good chair or sit on the floor. I have to pull my feet up or on a stool or into my chair. I spend most my time reading and taking notes so my feet and being anchored into my seat.. a heavy swivel club chair or on the floor. Feet and my anchor determines how long i stay in that study mode. I have to be as close as I can to outside too. I prefer outside or sunroom and i cant work or be in a room without a door outside for very long. I am always drawn to the rooms with doors and patios, so i tend to claim any room with outside doors as my personal space lolol.
