I've played guitar since I was thirteen and have taught it in college for 22 years - and my view is that this man reveals more in one lesson in an accessible way than almost anyone I've ever heard.
This is actually how a guitar teacher would teach you. Not just parroting, but showing examples and explanations. First video I’ve seen by him, it’s really really good.
Fantastic lesson. You really differentiate yourself as a teacher by answering the questions WHY things are played. Love that you make mistakes and your sense of humor and style are sooooo engaging. Many thanks.
Yeah, I just discovered this, and I don't know if it's because I've been playing just long enough for most of this to make "sense," but WOW! Best music lesson EVER! I can't wait to try this out!!!
You are the best teacher on RUclips. The way you broke the solo down into easy to digest concepts and kept it in one familiar spot was fantastic. You have a gift for teaching. Thank you for this.
Dude, god bless your patience. This video is basically a full Master Class on how to improvise over a chord progression. I followed along step by step because this is one of my favorite EC tunes. I can honestly say that my guitar playing has improved, and I think I understand chords and scales a bit better.
12 idiots thumbed down learning from a great teacher?!! unreal! you, steve stein, and shut up and play your guitar are the best teachers on youtube. keep up the great work and thank you.
If you are a new guitar player, listen to this guy before you listen to anyone else. I have been playing for close to 30 years and still learned alot. A great lesson taking a seaming impossible topic and making it possible.
A few years ago I tried to learn some of the solos from the song. I sort of had them but didn’t really think about where the notes were coming from. This was just the lesson I needed to put it all together. 👍🏼. Thanks 🙏
I have said it before, and i shall say it again, you are by far the BEST guitar teacher on RUclips. No one else even comes close. You have given me so many breakthroughs in such a short amount of time. Thank you Stitch.
Another great lesson Stitch! Your ability to break down concepts and ideas into understandable lessons is amazing. Please...please keep forgetting to turn up your volume and hitting your hand on the body of the guitar and saying things like...Really? when you make a mistake. It's so genuine... and so Stichey..I love it. And it makes you...YOU!
First time commenter here, Been lurking around for a while now watching your videos and just wanted to stop by and thank you because you have really helped me improve my guitar playing a tonne. I was stuck in a rut and not going anywhere, and your videos are the only ones, and i must have watched hundreds on the net so far, your videos are the only ones that actually make any sense to me. I have just bought a few of your downloads from some videos to help support you and give a little something back. These "Stealing and Simplifying" Videos are AMAZING! And would love it if you could continue on with these as i learnt so much from these alone.
Hey Ian. I want to thank you for being such a great guy and a great teacher. A few months after we spoke I was nearly homeless. I had to sell everything but my bed and my clothes, so my guitars and all of my gear was one of the first things to go. I look forward to every video because you inspire me to keep trying in guitar and life. Thankfully I am in a spot now where I can begin to rebuild. I'm going to get a cheap guitar and a little amp so I can play along with you again. Debating on a beginner pack or a cheap used guitar and get the rest over time. Anyway, thank you for everything you do.
I was taught the pentatonic scale 50 years ago but never figured out how to utilize it. I just used the major scale and played the simple melody. This lesson was really helpful in understanding how to use it. I still got alot to figure out though to plug it in. But thank you
I just found you!. I have been playing for over 40 years. And a big Clapton fan. Love the unplugged stuff. Always a crowd pleaser. I really enjoyed your presentation and approach. More than one place to play it on a guitar neck. Some of us are not Clapton or pro/s . Nothing wrong in putting it within reach of someones skin level. Keep up the great work.
I want to thank you along with all the notes of appreciation here. This timeless piece of music can now be played by most pickers at all levels. That's the mark of a great lesson!!!!
Wow. One of the most incredible videos I’ve seen on RUclips. Layla is my favourite song and I’m currently working on my improvisation, this video blew my mind 🤯 thank you for sharing. Can’t wait to watch more of your videos.
I haven’t watched this in a while. Your lessons have started to sink in. I wax really able to apply knowledge and skill (from the stitch method) to really make this work! Also. There is a 1/2 hour backing track loop of this song on RUclips. Not sure about the etiquette of posting another RUclipsrs link in your feed, so I didn’t. But it’s out there. As always, thanks Ian.
This lesson was brilliant. It really put into understandable terms the concept of soloing over chords which should go beyond just this classic cut...Thank you
Exactly what I need to hear. The pentatonic scale is evident but the beauty is the motif and additional notes from the chords. It is one of my favorite songs by Clapton. Thanks for showing me how to go a bit beyond the scales to form a wonderful melody. This is a sticking point for me right now. You just gave me hope to conquer my dry performance.
I love the videos man! I might have to buy the charts bc it’s so much to digest, but for someone who has played and learned online to play for years you’re really bringing a lot home for me and piecing together the fragments of knowledge I have. For anyone else watching, give it time and keep watching and playing-it’ll start making sense eventually lol
Man I say it every video but your videos have completely turned the corner for me. So glad to become a patreon member just to help support your awesomeness!
Great Lesson!! appreciate the insight mixed with the underlying theory to help see it, understand it, then watch you provide the practical application quickly to what you just taught. Very Valuable. thx
Great video my man. You manage to explain the how and why Eric hits certain notes without totally overwhelming us with music theory. This lesson was just what I was needing with exactly the right context. Thank you brother.
Excellent lesson that can be applied to pretty much any rock/blues song and beyond... One thing I learned specifically is how to add chord tones to a solo, at least as a starting point for this technique. I've heard about it and can definitely hear it being used in songs to make a solo sound unique and custom fit to the song, but it seemed overwhelming to apply. Again i'm sure there are a million ways to use them, but simply hitting a single chord tone (outside of the key pentatonic) right at the chord change is very easy to understand and apply, and for the listener it does the job of making the solo sound awesome and not just like going up and down the pentatonic. Thanks for that!!
Stealing and simplifying - "Absorb what is useful, discard what is not, add what is uniquely your own." - Bruce Lee. You have transformed the abstract to the tangible. Bruce Lee would have been proud of you.
Hey Ian i am blown away with this amazing class. I have been playing guitar for years and really classify myself as a hit and miss player using a looper and backing tracks and have never found a guitar tutor to explain this as simply as you have. I am in i want all the teaching i can get, super excited. I have played this Layla song over and over and tried to copy his style but i gave up eventually. You have made it come to light. Thank you. Now i need the same for his song before you cause me.
I've watched a lot of youtube.. guitar videos, im so glad I stumbled on your channel, clear, simple, easy to follow.. thank u so much.. This is just what I need.
You put so much into every lesson you do; and I always leave with so many more creative ideas other than just learning a song being covered note for note. That my friend is my idea of a great guitar lesson / instructor. I want to say: THANK YOU! and MUCH continued success!!!
Perfectly timed! I'm thinking on my way home from work this morning that I should learn this song. Get up from a rather long nap and look what Stitch has done :-) You're a good man
some say teachers are worth there weight in GOLD, knowledge of this caliber is invaluable, and you share it exceptionally well and with such enthusiasm... well done sir, your contribution to the world and universe at large is very much appreciated, I like your style keep doing what you're doing, your killin' it, and keeping it alive
Thanks Stich. That was a great lesson. I will definitely learn my penatonic scales and putting them to good use with Clapton's song. Mixing minor and blue notes really adds to the song. Thanks So Much. New Subscriber.
I love your enthusiasm for the music and your effort to pass it on to others. This is a very good lesson, explained so well even I can understand it! Thanks very much.........
I love your videos!! You have taught me so much and I've been playing for about 10 years now! You also have a very kind, welcoming spirit which is so inviting for a teacher. Thank you!!🙏
Just love your style. So much enthusiasm! It makes me laugh to see adverts before your video saying"you can't learn to play the guitar from RUclips videos!" [** skips advert, learns guitar from a RUclips video **] Thank you!!
Eric's the man, thanks so much. I always wonder if these legends know this stuff or if they just play what sounds good to their ears. Eric is my all time favorite.
I've played guitar since I was thirteen and have taught it in college for 22 years - and my view is that this man reveals more in one lesson in an accessible way than almost anyone I've ever heard.
Wow man, that’s intense! Thank you so much for the kind words. So glad you enjoy the channel.
I was getting pretty good at this. So good, in fact, when I walked out of my office my wife said, "Eric?" Great lesson.
This is actually how a guitar teacher would teach you. Not just parroting, but showing examples and explanations. First video I’ve seen by him, it’s really really good.
Have played for 18 yrs now and was intimidated it in ‘18, now it makes complete sense, glad I came back to it. Thanks.
Fantastic lesson. You really differentiate yourself as a teacher by answering the questions WHY things are played. Love that you make mistakes and your sense of humor and style are sooooo engaging. Many thanks.
This video is so good it ought to be outlawed. Nobody else explains the how AND the why like this. More practical value than anything else on RUclips.
Kevin Ilsen so true 😀
beyond true.
StichMethod continues to help this "late Starter" get a handle around how to make music. Really Really Really...helpful. Thank you sir!.
Yeah, I just discovered this, and I don't know if it's because I've been playing just long enough for most of this to make "sense," but WOW! Best music lesson EVER! I can't wait to try this out!!!
exactly. what is teaching if you dont go through those steps.... well done Sean

You look like and sound like a genuinely good person. World needs more like you. Thank you
What you do through this video is priceless! These are the kind of lessons which every guitarist wish they had access to.
Your genius is not in knowing this stuff, it’s knowing how to share it with us. Thanks man.
In addition to your excellent teaching, I appreciate how you show your love for the music/artist/concepts. It’s pure and endearing.
"Everything is D licious....im so sorry"
🤣🤣🤣 you are an amazing instructor absolutely loved this video
brilliant moment
You are a truly gifted communicator and teacher. Your face reflects your love of the subject. Kudos.
It seems like there is full of joy in his face when he breaks everything down into parts and explain it. Thanks for the video
I have said it before, and i shall say it again, you are by far the BEST guitar teacher on RUclips. No one else even comes close. You have given me so many breakthroughs in such a short amount of time. Thank you Stitch.

Great tutorial. Breaking it down and staying in the first position really helps to work on the concepts

Great video my man. You manage to explain the how and why Eric hits certain notes without totally overwhelming us with music theory. This lesson was just what I was needing with exactly the right context. Thank you brother.
Rare. A teacher who doesn't show off. I have learned so much from this. Thanks.

Stich this video is awsome.Easy to understand. Not to much talking.Very informative.Thank you .God bless
I have been searching for lessons that center on form 1 pentatonic. There are almost none!!! I can’t thank you enough for this one.
I wrote out the notes; looped me up some Dm Bb C Dm; clucked the button and for 5 minutes I was Eric Clapton beard and all.
this man is probably the best guitar teacher in the world
Hey Ian i am blown away with this amazing class. Great lesson. The explanations of why using the notes is really helpful instead of rote memorization
Come home to the root, 4 words, that opened up a whole new vista for me. Thanks Stitch 1st time watching, definately subscribing.
You put so much into every lesson you do; and I always leave with so many more creative ideas other than just learning a song being covered note for note.
That my friend is my idea of a great guitar lesson / instructor.
I want to say: THANK YOU! and MUCH continued success!!!
I wholeheartedly concur with your sentiment.
I agree w/U ..Kevin...he has what it takes ..... giving a good xplanation.

The more I learn the more it's clear that CAGED is everything. Great video!
Ryan Ferguson the CAGED System is the fretboard, the fretboard is the CAGED System.
Thanks Stich. That was a great lesson. I will definitely learn my penatonic scales and putting them to good use with Clapton's song. Mixing minor and blue notes really adds to the song. Thanks So Much. New Subscriber.
