Trying Out "Short Sword" On Malenia (NG+3)

- Unless for some odd reason you like the dagger-esque thrusts of the R2, have weight restrictions, want a powerstanced Straight Sword with the lowest stamina cost, or want a Dexterity-leaning SS that doesn't look like piss, you can honestly pass on this weapon. But as is tradition with Souls games, every weapon is viable and can be used to finish the game if you really want to. The only real fault of the Short Sword is the short length but it's not too much of an issue because if you're using a SS, you're in the face of an enemy to begin with. But the chances of missing a rolling attack, an R2 Square Off or even Piercing Fang are higher so spacing is crucial.
I used Storm Blade since I don't want to have to chase Malenia down in the first phase and it just alleviates the whole "short range" issue and keeps the flow of the fight moving. The thing I like most about the SS is that the first R2 thrust is faster than the regular thrusts of the larger SSs in its class; the follow-up R2 is simply awful. At several moments where I punish a whiff - like 00:19 - if I were using the Longsword, Malenia would have won the trade. So like Fists and Claws, you're trading range for speed but unlike the former two, you're only getting a slight speed increase with a certain attack.
Your damage is still decent with Keen but I chose Cold to see how well the SS can perform with split scaling. It's not too bad here, but its lower base AR makes it a poor candidate for split damage when you consider the variety of enemies and resistances. Honestly, I find the Short Sword is a great choice for powerstanced Blood-infusions.

More than twice, honestly. From what I've been told, Malenia's AI freaks out when you fight her near the edges of the arena. Her AI doesn't know how to navigate to a lower surface geometry while performing a fast move like a jump-poke or dash-grab.
