Hey Amanda. My friend is an officer in the Grenadier guards. One of the troops that do a stint as a Royal Guard. He said social media over the last 10 years has made the disrespect worse. Do much so they put the chain link fences up around guard positions although people still climb over them!
There's a RUclips channel I watch with a guy filming at Royal Horse Guards parade and police removed people daily for antics around guards! Sad as these are serving soldiers.
Btw the bearskin hats are blooming heavy having tried my friends hat on!

Hi Amanda, the Footguards adopted the bearskin from the French Imperial Guard after the battle of Waterloo. The chinstrap is worn like that to protect the face from sabre slashes, also if something strikes the bearskin it will fly off without breaking the jaw or neck. There're five regiments of Footguards, two regiments of Horseguards (the guys with metal breastplates and helmets) and a detachment of the Royal Horse Artillery, known as the Kings Troop RHA. It's their guns that fire salutes in Hyde Park or Green Park, they also use one of the gun carriages to carry the coffin at royal funerals. The guy at 4:10 is a RHA trooper. The guys at 8:08 from the Life Guards, Household Cavalry, are performing the daily 4 O'Clock punishment parade. Queen Victoria caught some Guardsmen drunk on duty, and ordered them to do this daily for the next 100 years. The sentence was completed years ago, but they obviously enjoy it so much they just can't bring themselves too stop. If you want to see them interacting with tourists when they're not on duty......."Kings Guard, High Five" will take you there.

"The Kings Guard" is a public duties posting, that can be done by any British military - or even Commonwealth Regiment - but normally by a the members of the Guards Division. Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Welch and Irish Footguard Battalions, the 2 cavalry regiments - the Blues and Royals (5:16)and the Lifeguards (3:44). They also have a ceremonial Artillery unit called the Kings Troops Royal Horse Artillery (4:20). The Bearskin is a battle honour from the Battle of Waterloo, where the British Footguards beat back the final assault of Napoleon's Imperial Guard - who wore Bearskins. The are all, full time professional soldiers, and away from the ceremonial duties have normal military roles - Falklands, Gulf Wars, Afghanistan etc.

The chin straps are across the cheek and mouth to deflect sabre/sword strikes to the face. They don't have to wear them all day. At Horse Guards the Troopers on foot stand for a maximum of two hours at a time, and the mounted Troopers for one hour at a time.

Bearskins were worn by the Grenadier companies of all infantry regiments and by the Scots Greys (Royal North British Dragoons) from the late 1700s. After Waterloo they were adopted for all companies of Guards Regiments as well as the Fusilier Regiments. Approximately 20,000 bears are culled in Canada each year, of which the Ministry of Defence buys one hundred skins. Other countries (e.g. Denmark) also use bearskin caps for their elite regiments.

We should be respectful of these ordinary people who do such an extraordinary job.

  • @Nobby76

When guards occasionally fall over, it is nearly always right in front of their guard hut. The reason being, 1 they have small metal parts on the bottoms of the boots, 2 there is a metal plate right outside most guard boxes. When the metal bits on the boot make contact with that metal plate (usually when they do the stomp), if its not flat down, the boot can slide, which causes the guard to slip and fall.
Regarding the bearskin hats. They did switch to synthetic fur for a while, but it was a failure. Real fur repells water, synthetic holds it. The original reason for them was during the battle of waterloo the hats were used to make the soldiers appear taller and more intimidating.
The reason they are worn in the position they are (covering the eyes slightly) means the guard has to stand with his head straight, or tilting his head up very slightly, which makes him look like he is standing with proper posture.
The reason the chin strap is on the chin not under it is murky, some say it is because originally it was to save you from saber attacts to the face, others claim it is, so if you get shot in the hat, it wont break your neck as it flies backwards, which it could if the strap was under the chin, where as now, it can just flip off backwards.
Also they dont have to wear it like that all day, most guard posts only last 2 hours at a time. And Amanada i have to say, when you asked that question, your "Bri'ish" accent really came out lol. When you said " There has to be a reason, im just curious what that is" the words "what that is" was said in a VERY strong british accent "Wot tha is", well done, we are finally rubbing off on you (not in a pervy way lol)

These hats are designed that way to make the soldiers look more fearsome on the traditional battlefield they were so big to instill fear into the Enemy through making them think that anyone attacking the British Army thought they were taking on Giants.
The other thing that anyone thinking about crossing the Royal Guards need to kbow is that they are as many people have said actual Elite Soldiers whove been in theatres of war around the world and those guns aling with Bayonets are not toys they are loaded and the bayonet is sharp because if these Guards are required to their job is to defend the Monarchy and will do so to the death. What sort of person does that? Ignorant ones. Also, people who do not realise that many of these are decorated, combat experienced, actual soldiers. Note the one with the paratrooper wings for example.

Dear Madam Amanda ,many thanks for next great, perfect video and next interesting topic and reaction! Well,to be a member of the Royal Guard could be a very hard job.I think (only my humble opinion), that these cups are kind of heritage from 19th century. Have a beautiful, wonderful May and take care, please. Greetings from the Central Europe.

what a lot of people dont realize is those guards arent ceremonial.. they have been authorized for lethal use of force if they feel the palace and/or monarch is under threat.. you could feasibly lose your life by screwing with them. some people dont get that they are only still alive because the guards are patient with them.

Probably one of the last true best things about our once Great British country. So much of our society has been lost over time it's about time the British people stood up for what's left of our heritage

A good few years ago I was walking past Horseguards and the guard was mounted, a woman was stroking a horses neck, it must have been annoyed as it raised a leg and stamped on her foot. As she hobbled off I could have sworn the charger (horse) was actually laughing. The Cavalry Guard was smiling and patted his mount as if to say "Well done".

Which is pretty disgusting. Time for a change to synthetic. All this b/s that the culled number of bears happens to coincide with the number of hats needed. Stop it. Barbaric. I’m former BA infantry. Plenty of operational experience. Did Windsor once. A waste of my time and training. I respect the Guards but don’t think the buzzbees should entail animal cruelty. Hunters just make these numbers up. ,🤢

Could you imagine trying to do that to American military guardsmen? I bet you'd find yourself in the guardhouse at least.😮

    •  4 месяца назад

No need to imagine, tourists are tourists (even Americans in their own country behave like that as tourists). There are some monuments in Washington (the one with the highest density of those, I *think)* with actual military guards that get tourists misbehaving all the time.
The difference, though, is that those monuments have largely ceremonial guards. While the guards around Buckingham Palace are *not* for show (only).

I watch the Kings Guard quite regularly at Horse Guards. You have two regiments, the Blues and Royals (Blue tunics and red plumes) and the Lifeguards (Red tunics and white plumes) and of course the amazing horses, even they have their own characteristics. During the summer, the regiments take their horses on holiday to the beach for a well deserved rest and gallop in the sea, the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery stand in for them, you saw them in the video in black.
It is quite amazing watching just how stupid tourists can be, you start to wonder if some don't realise they are actual real soldiers (Troopers in the case of the Household Cavalry).

Hi Amanda. I was part of the Queens Guard for seven years and I had everything. Been spat at. Coins thrown at me and general abuse. All were from tourists. I’ve see it all. As far as the comments here they’re very accurate. Apart from ceremonial duties I did two operational combat tours spanning three years and again I’ve seen it all.
    Great video btw👍👍👍👍👍

Like 12 years ago was visiting London and we where on our way back from the seeing the palace and walked past the side entrance to Charles and camelias place which was just down the road. A delivery van pulled up to the gate and the guy approached the small chain fence before the big gate and the guard came out and only said five words “you can not deliver here”
The driver tried to explain and guard just repeated and he did that about two more times then the driver hoped back in a left. Then the guard returned to his little shack

It is so strange to me that the Royal Guard attracts little respect try that activity in respect of the other European Royal Households and their guards!!. Yes this is not Disneyland. Show the respect you would wish to be shown to yourself and respect the traditions of any country you visit. A guest is always welcome but a trespasser is unwanted
