    A lot of companies use this tactic, I think they call them "White-hat hackers." Meaning they offer their skill at hacking to companies in order to hack their systems and find flaws or access points, then lets the company know about these so they can fix them, this significantly reduces the chances of "Black-hat hackers" (criminal hackers) being able to access their systems. It's the essence of fighting fire with fire, who else would know better about how hackers work and think than an actual hacker?

      Yep as soon as I saw the title it made me wish again that I got a pc when I was younger and not a console. White hat hacking is a good side job and I think some people make it their main source of income too

    I mean, this is standard procedure. There is a bounty system for almost any and every security system, so people find out and inform back. They're usually pretty decent (usually in the range of a million bucks or even with extra zeros).

    • @adem4674
      @adem4674 Месяц назад +7

      I would highly doubt there is any sort of bounty for VAC lmfao. The lazy asses over at valve would need to actually update their (non-existent) anticheat if they had one. Valve ain't doing that. They too lazy to actually improve their games.

    • @marcusjohansson668
      @marcusjohansson668 Месяц назад +2

      Correction, there _might_ be a bounty system for closed source applications, open source do not need it because the users check the code with extreme pettiness finding every single weakness FOR FREE.
      Also makes the software WAY safer.
      But that would also mean profit would go down, and we all know what that means.
      Profit > user safety every time.

    • @Wildcat12
      @Wildcat12 Месяц назад +9

      @@marcusjohansson668 LMAO. There's plenty of very good reasons companies don't open source their shit. The Riot code leaks from a few months back show exactly why. The moment their anticheat code got made public they saw a 30% increase in cheating. Open source is great for applications that are smaller or allow the user a large degree of control, but not for anything that requires heavy security. And calling open source "WAY safer" is still insane. Just 2 weeks ago almost every Linux system had an intentional RCE backdoor built-in, which had been there for months/years unnoticed. Open source is not inherently any safer for the user.
      I love open source code, it's great for me as a dev. But acting like it's a universal best case is ridiculous.

      @@Wildcat12 The point you completely missed in that whole rant not only shows you have no idea what you are talking about, but that with open source, things like the riot leak would not even happen, because there would be nothing to leak.
      The XY "hack", that did not happen, was found BECAUSE IT IS OPEN SOURCE. LMAO
      Maybe you should focus on the backdoor CIA INTENTIONALLY left in windows FOR YEARS when they found it instead and be worried about that.
      But you show the precise problem in the world, most people are fanboys of capitalism, and therefore hurt themselves.
      There is a definition for it: "useful idiot"
      Google that.
      But I'm actually not saying Leagus should be open source (even though that would be GREAT), I am talking about Vanguard only here.

    "What do you think riot would do with your information?" is the dumbest question ever, no offense. Data is the biggest market of today, and this gives Tencent the absolute easiest (and cost effective) way to get as much data as they want from millions of westeners. Riot is Tencent's stooge, they are 100% owned by them and therefore obligated to do what they're told. Their passive aggressive post insulting their players and saying that they actually don't meet Tencent too often means literally nothing, since no one can fact check their claims.
    And also, the bounty is meaningless. The data is encrypted, only Riot (therefore Tencent and the ccp) knows what they're stealing.

    We had 2 decades of consensis that you should never give anyone online your data. And bit by bit that mindset got brittled down.
    Cookies became a thing, with a short massive outcry when the public realised what they were.
    Facebook became a thing, with a massive outcry after peoples data got sold behind their backs.
    TOS‘ more and more integrated permission to use personal info, which everyone warned each other about.
    Now all of that has gotten so normal that millions of people go: „Access to my entire PC and sensible data? As long as I can play my videogame thats fine. They promised not to fuck me over so I can trust them.“

Also the Linux part was so much bs. Ofc there aren't any linux players anymore if you keep announcing vanguard will come, which (for good reason) does not run on linux by design.

    • @Scorpia260
      @Scorpia260 Месяц назад +34

      You're not wrong. But the security field itself has also changed over time too. It is quite literally impossible now to fully prevent an attack or breach. Now security is all about making it difficult and layering solutions. If you are a more difficult target than someone else, then you are safer. Windows Defender is pretty good these days. But in my opinion, no one should consider their PC a truly safe space unless they have never connected it in any way to the outside world.
      We have no choice but to live in various shades of risk. Riot' is 100% right when they say that they don't need kernel level access to get everything. And that holds true to a large swath of games and software people install without a thought before now. It's honestly great that this is forcing people to actually think about the choices they are making to install something.
      And frankly, Vanguard forces people to actually update their damn machines and drivers that are riddled with decades old vulnerabilities. So that's kinda nice, lol.

      I kept telling me: "Jesus, they are good at dodging. Must be a really good player" and even a friend of mine said: "Yeah, Leona E is a pretty small hit box" but I literally felt like I was going insane, not hitting E's I would usually hit.
      After I saw that statistic, I was sure that player was using an on/off script where you turn it on if needed and play normal otherwise. Because there were moments, when that player didn't dodge the easiest skill shots and then they dodged everything.

    its rly cute what they say they are doing , but theyr anticheat just blocks everything it gets its hands on , no matter if its actually a cheat or a non harmfull VPN , doesnt even matter if you have the game open ( Vanguard opens with windows, will not allow VPNs to work correctly even with games closed). Just FYI closing Vanguard wont solve , as Vanguard swipes the already installed files of the VPNs making them unusable until we reinstall. Majority of players dont cheat. it is often the top percentile of players which is a low amount of people and the new accounts. this just sounds like a product that someone within riot wants to expand to look good in their resume or track record.

    This is a willful miss of the actuall issue. Yes Riot will have eyes on them when they release this software. But what happends in 5 years when this information is no longer openly talked about. We are not only expecting Riot to stand on principle on privacy but we are also expecting them not to fall for pressure from any third party groups that might have an interest in direct access to millions of players computers. I am sorry let the cheaters reign. Every single tech company have shown us that everything is up for grabs as long as the price is good enough.

    What would riot do with our search history and information from our computer? ... they sell it... just like old school twitter did even though they said they wouldnt... they then got fined an amount less than they made in selling the information.... thats what riot can do. Note the people that would make this decision wouldnt necessarily be riot rather it would be their owner Tencent which is a chinese government backed company... Also if the playerbase is so unaware of all the hacking as described then perhaps the hackings isnt as impactful which begs the question if this is even
    needed?

    what are they going to do that monitor that has built-in AI that basically pings your screen about potential ganks? It is like cheating without running a program.

    I still find Vanguard to be a stupendous method of anti cheat. Obv you will be able to capture a cheater if you have absolute control over your clients PC (since vanguard assumes a control level above administrator rights), including everything they own and even access to their devices like webcams etc. You can even access their private bank info. Riot will not do it but if one person breaches them it's over.
    If Vanguard decides by it's own to change a tiny line of code by accident (which let's be honest even the riot client is a broken mess of spaghetti code which barely works half of the times) where it matters on your PC, it might be unable to ever open again.

      I'm pretty sure Vanguard is not a sentient software that can change itself.

      Vanguard has been in val for 3 years and they only had small problems right with the software launch.
      Skepticism is completely reasonable, but bricking the players PC's shouldn't be of concern this deep into Vanguard's lifespan.

    Sure, they have no interest in browser history, but the thing is, the league of legends source code was leaked, so if in the future someone or some group of hackers get access of vanguard and send to everybody a secret update of firmware, then this hacker or group of hackers would technically have a spyware or malware in every PC with league installed and then use that to stole informations and sell, in the time we're living there isn't "free tech", we're the products, every info it's buyable and usable, so i still have my doubts about installing league again.

      They hack vanguard, and instead of making a new wave of cheats to make money, they create a virus to sell data.
      Data is worth almost nothing, cheats can go for $40 daily.
      If vanguard got leaked, it would be used to create more cheats.

    When you look how much cheats costs (at least from what i could find overall, not specifically lol) they are often really expensive. It's a whole market. and seeing how many people cheat (again, not specifically lol), i think $10 000 isn't "that much" compared to people who are willing to spend $20+ monthly, sometimes even way more.

    If Riot were to investigate player's computers...Do you think they will finally see how popular the furry characters are and give them more skins? Maybe I should put together a folder for that named "RIOT LOOK HERE" and hope they get the hint. Other furries should do the same.

    ye see the funky thing about this is, kernel level anti-cheats.... dont actually make their games more secure 😅 all it does it automate the process for the devs..... basically the devs are too bloody lazy to actually come up with proper solutions so they go with the "uses ChatGPT for a college essay" card and try to spin it as this end all be all thing. when truth is its a crock of shit 🤣valorant is riddled in cheaters and no one admits it simply becuase they spent hundreds on skins they can never re-sell ahahaha me included like, but atleast i can see through the fog.... 13 years of my life i spent on league. now i have to leave it behind........

    Idk how vanguard usually behaves since I don't play valorant. I simply disable it from autostarting on startup, and then manually start in services to play league without needing a reboot, the vgc service would also automatically stops once I close league client or riot client.

    • @neonoir__
      @neonoir__ Месяц назад +1

      thats just the vanguard tray icon you're disabling. If you actually disabled vanguard (vgk.sys in task manager, check, it's there) the option to launch your game is greyed out

    • @Smilling_Sadface
      @Smilling_Sadface Месяц назад

      @@neonoir__ yeah, what I disabled is the tray icon on the startup tab in the task manager, the service wasn't running, there's smth called vgc in services it's not disabled it was simply set to manual. I have to manually start it before I start the riot client to play league (if not the league launcher is greyed out), and once it's running there would be something called "vanguard-user-mode-service" and under it is the vgc. exe service, and once I close the riot client it automatically stops as well and disappears in the task manager and also stops running in the services.

    • @Smilling_Sadface
      @Smilling_Sadface Месяц назад

      @@neonoir__ no, not quite right, I just tested it again but it seems like if starts the riot
      client but don't launch LoL and simply sign out and close the riot client the vanguard user-mode service will remain running in the task manager but if I launch LoL and then sign out through League client and "x" riot client, the service will automatically stop as well.
