  • In this episode, I will bring you along down to the Walthamstow Village Orford Road Mini-Holland installation ten years after the scheme was launched in March 2014. As I note in this video, once you see a Main Street or High Street, if you will, like Orford, oriented with a people-first approach, you just can't unsee it. How could we ever think that prioritizing motor vehicles on such streets is a good idea?

    Background:
Hi Everyone! My name is John Simmerman, and I’m a health promotion and public health professional with over 30 years of experience. Over the years, my area of concentration has evolved into a specialization in how the built environment influences human behavior related to active living and especially active mobility.
Since 2010, I've been exploring, documenting, and profiling established, emerging, and aspiring Active Towns wherever they might be while striving to produce high-quality multimedia content to help inspire the creation of more safe and inviting, environments that promote a "Culture of Activity" for "All Ages & Abilities."
The Active Towns Channel features my original video content and reflections, including a selection of podcast episodes and short films profiling the positive and inspiring efforts happening around the world as I am able to experience and document them.
Thanks once again for tuning in! I hope you find this content helpful and insightful.

It's so quiet! I've always found it very soothing to hear nothing but muffled voices. I remember camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains as a kid and listening to all the people talking around fires underneath the Cricket sounds.

I know! That's probably my favorite part of streets like this. 😀

@@ActiveTowns If I ever get rich, I will build a car-free town. Next time you are in Arizona, visit Anthem, which is just north of Phoenix if you have time. It's not a car-free town, but it has a network of paths throughout, some concrete but a lot of decomposed granite.

@@kitchencarvings4621 Cool! I will definitely check it out. Maybe when I return to Culdesac for a follow up profile once they complete their buildout. Thanks for the tip!

I liked that girl toward the end, spinning loops around a planted foot on her scooter.
It's a good route if kids can play like that.

@@ActiveTowns Hello John, I was really referring to the people we saw in your video. The locals who were using that new-found freedom.

It looks very relaxed their that Spar Lorry looked a bit out of space but it was only delivering I imagine.

Yeah, and that was in the early morning, when I suspect those deliveries are encouraged.
