  • When Namco released Pac-Man in the arcades to the masses it was a crazed hit since Pac-Man was the first video game character to have a name and actually have a personality. Since Atari had the best selling console at the time it was only expected for them to throw their weight at Namco and secure rights to program a home version for their Atari 2600. You all know how history went; Atari made a bazillion copies of the game and it sold like hot cakes but it didn't take long for the public to realize that the game was a heap of trash leaving most if not all owners angry at Atari for pulling such a fast one on them.
Fast forward to the days of the Atari 5200; it was the system that Atari touted would bring the arcade experience home. They now had a chance to remedy their mass failure of an Atari 2600 game and right their wrongs with the fans and gain their respect back.

We had a 5200 back in the day and this was one of the few games we had. We had this, Kangaroo, Defender, Popeye, and Qix. I played them over and over until I mastered them. When you get deep into the levels on Pac-Man, the ghosts will permanently turn blue (until you eat them) after you eat a Power Pill. This way, you can pretty much eat all the pills on the board without fear of dying. One afternoon when I was like 12, I spent a whole Sunday morning into the afternoon doing this to get to a score of 1 million. I thought something amazing would happen when I hit that 7 digits. It was very anti-climactic because nothing really happened. I think the counter stuck at 999,999 or something, but that was it. Bummer.

I had defender, pac man, centipede, dig dug, galaxian, football, buck rogers, joust. I couldn’t have been happier with the system. Still have it in storage.

I remember when my friend David saved all summer and bought a 5200. He called me on the phone and said to come over ,he had the new Atari. It was pretty new, because he kept talking about this new Atari machine and saved all summer, working at the school painting and doing leanup jobs. He was 15 like I was so for a kid to save that kind of money was something else in those days. This was around 1982 or 1983,not sure. Anyways I remember I had to jump in the shower after the phone call because I had been mowing both our lawns all day and wanted to go over fresh and when I was in the shower I was so excited I kept dropping soap and rushing the shower to get over there and see the new system. See allot of us had never really seen this machine,we had heard something new was out there, and we were curious. But this was Atari, and for us that brand was godly as a kid in those days. So yeah, plenty of excitement as I rusjed over his house to play this new and more powerful Atari machine. So when I got there the machine was already out of the box,set up in his bedroom, pillows to sit back on on the floor, sodas ready to go,this was going to be like watching Star Wars for us,it was a big thing here. The first thing that I remember thinking when I was it..... It was gigantic. But I remember it looked great, all that size meant power. the cartridges were huge too. It was so different from the Atari 2600 look,I remember thinking this was a futureistick look. It was so new and different, this looks crazy. Then I saw him turn on the machine and I saw this short little fat joystick....um what? That thing looks weird! Then the splash screen comes up,PacMan. I knew Atari screwed things up so bad with that terrible pacman game, but then all us kids on the block were so happy when he saw what they did with Ms.PacMan,that was something else. So I was hoping this 5200 PacMan was gonna be the same, hoping for a great version. When I saw the maze show up and PacMan running around with ghosts after him my jaw dropped. I didn't say anything,I was just watching and think my God this is way beyond the stuff we have at home on the 2600. Eventually I got to play it and right away I was like whats wrong with this joystick,it feels spungy.....,did you break it? David tells me no thats the way it suppose to feel, its totally different in feel next to the 2600 stick. I did decently in playing with it for PacMan and it was just an afterthought that the stick felt weird,I thought it would just take getting use to. A few days later I get a call from David again, the 5200 was taken back. He told me they had recalled them, there was something wrong with them,he never did tell me what it was but it must have been the joysticks I guess. They really are pretty bad. I got my own 5200 around the year 2000 from Ebay and I loved finally having the machine, but again the joystick just got in the way of having the most fun i could with PacMan. So in the end when my friend told me they recalled the 5200 it must have been that they just returned it because they weren't happy with the controllers,I mean there never was a recall, right? I dont think I've ever heard about that happening for the 5200.

This should have been the pack in game for the 5200. At the time Colecovision's pack in Donkey Kong was largely responsible for selling their system. This version of Pac Man could have done the same for the 5200. Worst decision Atari ever made.

It was the pack-in game when I got mine. Bought defender and centipede along with it and couldn’t have been happier right from the start. Was very glad it didn’t come with breakout lol.

I read the 2600 Pac-Man was just a prototype, and that Atari hoped to have it out by Christmas 1981, but even so that deadline didn't come to pass and the 2600 Pac-Man first appeared on store shelves in March 1982.
