  • Xanax or Alprazolam is rarely prescribed at our office in Philadelphia. It can work incredibly well short-term, but can actually increase someone's anxiety between doses, or increase their risk of panic attacks. Patients will sometimes refer to it as a "ball and chain," feeling that they always need to carry it with them, or know where it is. It works very quickly (but wears off quickly), which can lead to a roller coster of decreased anxiety (with a dose), increased anxiety (As it wears off), decreased anxiety (with the next dose) etc, with patients often taking it 2 or 3 times a day. As mentioned, it can be helpful for some, but it's incredibly important to discuss risks and benefits with a provider, before starting, stopping or changing dose of this medication. There may be better options.
