The man behind the project Mason is Dutch DJ and producer Iason Chronis. Since his childhood he has been playing and listening to music already. When he was just 6 years old, he began to learn playing violin. That resulted in him using his violin skills during his DJ sets between 1999 and 2005. In 2004 he joined Tiësto during his world tour. Not only he was the warm up DJ during this tour, he did also perform “Lethal Industry” on stage during several of the big shows.
In the year 2006 Mason’s track “Exceeder” came out, which was one of his very first ever releases. It became a big succes in the clubs and on festivals and “Exceeder” got supported by lots of house, techno and electro DJs.
In 2007 the track got re-released, but this time with vocals from American rapper Princess Superstar. The vocals of her track “Perfect” were mixed with the instrumental version of Mason’s “Exceeder”, which resulted in the track “Perfect (Exceeder)”. And that version became a big hit in the club scene, but it was also a chart succes in several countries around the world.
For this week’s vlog I sat down with Mason, in his studio in Amsterdam, to ask him about the story behind “Exceeder”, his new album "Frisky Biscuits" on Toolroom Records and more!
Enjoy and thanks for watching!

What is your favorite version / remix of "Exceeder"?
The vocal version. Maybe it's because of memories. But many people will say vocal's not good
martijn ten velden remix is my fav
Original Dub mix, I remember playing it at my local club when I was 17. Great days!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE: The story behind "Binary finary"
@@soundgarden1123 Massive classic, but I’m based in The Netherlands and the Binary Finary guys are in Australia, so not sure if that will ever happen tbh....
And now it's on the Saltburn soundtrack... and it's back in the spotlight again!
Exactly! Including a whole bunch of new remixes, good for him! 🙌🏻
This track was a massive tune when it was released
Wonderful exceeder, and wonderful live violin at tiesto in concert 2004
That kid's show looks very psychedelic! Thanks for the video
Thanks Paul! I used to watch this show back in the day as well haha
ah yes! good ol' Exceeder! Fun track! Brings back the memories of going clubbing in Sydney, Australia. Fluoro clothing - shirts, pants were very popular. Original mix for me but I do appreciate Perfect Exceeder - good for sing-a-longs.
Dude I totally forgot about this track
Whaaaaaaa?!?!
Another track in my collection. This guy was in the Mickey mouse club from his home town. Thats pretty cool. Glad he came up in the Trance world.
🙌🏼😄🙌🏼
Inspiring!
you are not alone was very original track back in the days.. !
Interesting interview we'll done twain 👍🏽
Much appreciated!
Glad to see you interview more artists from different electronic genres.
Love to see you tackle 'Call on Me' by Eric Prydz (if it gets better out there)
Thank you! And Eric hates that track, so not gonna happen lol
Could ask him about Opus,
@@scottkirkland6139 oh trust me, I would love to, but Eric hardly performs in The Netherlands unfortunately....
@@muzikxpress he’ll finally come to Loveland in August!
@@rfish2 I’m gonna reach out and try to make this happen 🤞🏻
Cool, I wish he'd elaborated more on the musical gear he used.
Garage Band sounds like.
Love this interview. BTW was is that song playing around the 12:11 mark? Is that the B side
No. It is "Runaway" one of the greatest tune he ever released.
ruclips.net/video/7RT0I-WSZOo/видео.html here you go, Jacob.
@@djfredleo Thanks.....BTW what about this song?
15:52
@@audiosex No idea, unfortunately... Let's wait, maybe Twan will answer 😉
Here you go guys!
00:00 Mason - Exceeder (Instrumental Club Mix)
10:19 Mason - Runaway
14:29 Mason - Syncrom
19:33 Mason - Who Killed Trance
Thanks for this interview! Randomly curious how his given name "Iason" is pronounced.
Thank you!!
Was hoping to hear about gear and methods used

How come you didn’t ask him stuff like what software he used to make it? What soft synths? If you do more of these please go more in depth on the production. Sorry if it’s in the video already and I missed it. Thanks for the interview though!
I’m not a producer myself so I only have very limited knowledge of equipment and software. There are other channels that go more in depth on the actual production stuff etc. I always focus more on the story because that’s what I’m interested in personally. And since I don’t know much about equipment / software it feels weird for me to ask more about it, so that’s why I’m usually not going that in depth about those kind of things in my interviews. I like the actual stories 😉
@@muzikxpress I respect that. Even with your limited knowledge, it wouldn’t be much to ask a couple quick questions like what DAW did you use and what were the main synths you used. A lot of times there are interesting tidbits about what they used that will make the story better, because back in the day they had to do more with less. I appreciate the story surrounding the songs too though. Nice job!
@@DJ-Coma I usually ask what equipment has been used, though in this case he said he only used a Mac and a midi keyboard in his kitchen, so that was it. If you check my other interviews, mostly about the tracks that are from the 90s / early 00s, you’ll see I always ask this 😉
Wipeout HD Fury?
What do you remember about the production process? “I did it in my kitchen with a Mac & Midi Keyboard surrounded by pots & pans 👀👀🤥🤥🤣 Monster of a track when it came out
Interestingly the same location for JM Jarre's first album.
What are the chances you can get an interview with Danski or Delmundo to talk about any of their classix. They are very elusive.
I did ask Wessel a while ago already, but unfortunately he said no 🙁
@@muzikxpress do they really dislike their work? It seems so weird to me that they produced massive hits and have practically ZERO internet presence/media history
@@JeffFromRUclips I never said they dislike their work, not everyone wants to do interviews. They’re not the only ones that said “no”. Some people like to stay in the background and never really do interviews (unfortunately...)
Why dont you play the track at the start to give us some context.
The track that's being discussed is always playing in the background of the video. Because of copyright issues and because I don't want my videos to be removed / blocked, I can only play the music on a low volume unfortunately. If I play the music louder, my video might get removed from my channel and after 3 strikes my entire channel will be removed, so.... I obviously want to avoid that as you might understand ;-)
@@muzikxpress Oh I see, how does that work, do youtube algorithms automatically scan video uploads and compare them to some kind of database?
@@lardosian yes, whenever I upload a video it does get scanned. If the system does recognize the audio, I might have a problem with the video. So that’s the reason why the music is always a lot lower compared to the voices.
I came here for the girls, but where are them?
Ik hout van dij
😀 I... To my huge shame, of course, I literally hated "Exceeder"... Especially that awful mash up with princess Superstar, or whatever her name is... I remember it's been literally everywhere... Sometimes I played it too, I have to be honest, but without a single feeling of satisfaction... Just because it was a hit...
I guess everything changed, when another track has hit the industry, "Runaway" its actually sounds in the background of the interview, in the middle... I still enjoy to play that track time to time... Got nothing but respect to Mason, it seems that he is a great dude, but I'm never playing "Exceeder" again... I need to check out his production on digital stores, I'm pretty sure, he's got something interesting over these years... Sadly I lost the touch with his music since 2012 or something... Except probably "Papapa" that I've played couple of times in 2016 or something... Not to mention the fantastic "Boadicea" recorded with the stunning Roisin Murphy... And "You Are Not Alone"...
Thank you, Twan for reminding me of one of the greatest modern track making artist like Mason!
