Finally I found someone going through the controls of this app very well. I really appreciate you, man. I thought I'm the only one think the 'focus control' in this app sucks. I'm new here. I'm also shooting my contents on iPhone.
The adjustment in zebras is to set the level of where they kick in - not an opacity control. For example, you could shoot a 90% white card and set your zebra level to 90 so that you use the zebra stripes to set an appropriate exposure.

Just finished shooting a wedding ceremony. I wasn't asked to do so, but when I showed up at the ceremony, I saw that there was no videographer. So, I shot the 30 minute ceremony with the Blackmagic camera app on my iPhone 14 Pro Max. After about 20 minutes, the footage started to jitter. The the image got all funky with occasional changes in color (no I didn't move to a different setting with a different lighting temp). The iPhone got very hot to the touch. Then, after the ceremony, when I tried to shoot some of the dances, when I hit the record button, the image froze. I wonder whether either the iPhone or the Blackmagic app is not able to shoot long clips. Anyone else have this problem?
Interesting. I haven't yet used it for a paid gig as it's still pretty new. I use Cinema P3 currently for paid gigs. Hopefully these issues get updated and fixed soon.
Iphone has a heating issue with long recordings , especially if the temperature around the area is warm.. this creates issues with video recording, ending up in situations like the above
The digital zoom function is handy for me to zoom in on a distant face before using the manual focus feature. Another alternative I use sometimes instead of the included focus-peaking feature.
This app is pretty awesome even in version 1.0. The main problem holding me back and keeping me on Filmic Pro is the lack of gimbal control. I really hope they're going to add that soon. They could charge a decent price for it, but it's something it really really needs.

When you select a feature like shutter there will be a padlock (locked) near the top right. Tap on the padlock to lock or unlock the function. I believe the iso is connected to the iso.
Oops i realized i was not using the ND filter i was using the CP filter maybe that's why it was not doing anything, i have to find my ND filter and try to see if that fixes the problem.
The Black Magic camera app feels like a knife at the back of Android users! 😢 Come on Blackmagic, do the right thing and release this app for Android too! ❤
someone please help! when i record videos and go to the media section it says that my clip is 0:00 seconds long! even though my clips are 15 seconds or longer. i’m so confused ?
Downloaded and tried it out, love the interface and quality of recordings, but no matter what I do it is showing me having only 3% of phone storage remaining, which it shows only being like 3 minutes, but my phone is reporting what would be about 60% storage as ‘free’. Anyone have any idea why? Hopefully I’m just being dumb and missing a simple thing 😂
I have this app on an iPhone 11, all seems to work ok but I can't get audio on playback, yes I am selecting either internal or external microphone and I can see the sound bar display move in sink with audio being spoken, what am I doing wrong please.
Hmm. The usual fix for these kinds of glitches is to uninstall the app completely and then reinstall it. As long as your audio source isn't set to 'None' then it should be working.
Thank you for a useful review. The app atm has rather less functionality than Cinema P3 but the UI is much better. Hopefully, this is just a start for Black Magic and more goodies will appear in due course. I am finding that with the Zebra stripes that as I reduce the numbers on the slider more areas seem to be striped. Do you find this too?
how you can change the IRIS f1.6? in my blackmagic app does not appeare this option on the screen (I have iphone SE) this is an important feature if you want to record some areas specific to stand out and leave blurry the other areas, I appreciate if you can tell us how to change it
How do you shoot 120fps in the app? There's no option for that frame rate for me (iPhone 15 Pro, iOS 17.3, newest Blackmagic app) even when I switch between HD/720p.

Thanks! I think the rode wireless go single mic or double would be great depending on if the questions are being heard too rather than just a talking head style of interview. Also depends on what kind of environment they are used in.
Good day my friend, sorry to bother you again, just wanted to ask u if u have noticed a difference in the autofocus of the native app of iPhone and the autofocus of the Black Magic app, here is what i mean, i did a recording of myself of a medium close up with the native app in the cinematic mode, after reviewing the footage i noticed the out of focus on the background is really nice all by itself, i did the similar thing with the Black magic app and when i reviewed the shot i noticed that out of focus for the background was not there at all even though it is in the autofocus, is there a reason why, does that happen in yours too and if so how do i go about fixing this especially when i am trying to film myself, thank you kindly.

Question here cuz we have started using this app for our channel but the BM app only shows a partial part of the memory it can occupy ? which is rather frustrating, I have tons of free memory but the BM app only allows to use a fraction of that and there is, as far as I can see, no setting I can tweak for this. Do you know what going on there?

Question about record time: I have my Media/footage selected to save ONLY in Files on my iPhone. However, the storage indicator shows my storage space is low. I can't seem to turn off proxies which record in-app. Any solutions? My in-app storage keeps filling up. I have deleted and re-installed
Hmmm. Sounds like a possible glitch which I'd email Black magic about. In terms of storage check your deleted section of files and videos ect as they eat up a lot of storage. The in app storage is the same as your iphone storage.
I have Bluetooth enabled on the BMCamera app. I use my 15proMax on a DJI Mini gimbal. On a mirrorless camera, you can start/stop camera recording via a button on the DJI gimbal (via Bluetooth). ANY way to achieve this beneficial feature on the Black magic cam app?

Are you locking your shutter speed when shooting in log? In a different video, people say to use 1/48 (locked) and look between 1100-1300 ISO (according to this video it's the iPhones sweetspot) .
I recommend doing some tests for yourself. At first, I was aiming for that high ISO range and trying to use ND’s to compensate. Then I tested shooting outside and letting the ISO be as low as possible; shutter speed is more reasonable, and I am more than pleased with the image quality and dynamic range.

I have watched over 10 full length videos on Blackmagic app and none of them are talking about how to switch between photo and video mode. A bit frustrating. The button on this app only takes videos and there’s no where I can find to switch to photos. Does anybody have an idea?
I tried saving lots of clips (about 200) from the Blackmagic app to the gallery and have only found 1/4 of them saved. Did anyone had this problem and the workaround?
Oh sorry just wanted to point out something else with the app, after dropping the iso to the lowest "34" and using the preset of the white balance to outdoor sunny, everything outside was overblown and exposed, however, i got myself a "ND filter" but that even did not work everything was still overblown, this should not be happening once the ND filter is added, is it because there is a problem with the app or am i doing something wrong, thank u kindly.
You want you shutter speed to be double your frame rate like 25fps = 1/50ss. If you have done this then it may be that the ND filter isn't strong enough to expose for outside? Also it's had to expose for indoors and outdoors at the same time without additional light indoors.
Thank u so much my friend yes u were right i fixed the problem as u suggested, i have a last question and will not bother u anymore lol, if a scene that i am filming requires an indoor and an outdoor shot and i use the ND filter for the outdoor should i continue using the ND filter for the indoor too so the shots don't look different.
If the windows aren't in the shot then I wouldn't bother. You can always look back at those shots to make sure they are lit with a good level of continuity.@@inhouseproductions1762
@@SmartphoneFilmmaker hi. Thanks for this. Reinstalled and it now offers up to 60fps. However I know what the issue was now. It won’t let me record in anything higher than 30fps if the codec is set to any of the apple pro res codecs but if the codec is set to either hevc or h.264 then it’s fine.
It's a good applicatio, with a lot of potential....but one of the things I've noticed when chatting to other people I work with, is the very noticable lag when moving the phone. Especially on older iphones like an iphone12. When using it plan coverage or scene blocking it can be a little jarring.
Definitely. Oh I haven't used it loads yet but I did notice a tiny bit of that and I thought it was just me. Good to know. Will be interesting to see how this app develops.
I’ve just tried filming with ProRes 4444 on an iPhone 13 Pro (and also an iPad Pro M2 which records the phone screen and the TV in the room so I can see any lag) so it’s recording at approx 120mb second (and recording a proxy) and there is no discernible lag. I filmed in a room with the cricket on TV and I can see the ball strikes on my iPhone monitor and the TV as being as near as frame perfect as possible. I always film in airplane mode and I never have an other apps running whilst I’m filming.
@@ThisOldManOfTheSea Are you shooting with the camera locked off? As there is definite input latency when the camera/phone is in motion on an iphone 15 it's barely noticable but very visible on an iphone 14 pro max when in motion
Just tried the same test with ProRes 4444 and this time I had Matrix Resurrections playing with subtitles. This time the iPhone was in permanent motion of up/down and left/right whilst recording. Stabilisation was set to Standard (same as before) and once again there was no discernible lag. Version of App is 1.0.10003
What’s the difference of the motion stabilization settings? I thought extreme would mean better stability but it seems standard is more stable when shaking. Cinematic creates blurring when shaking. Anybody else notice this?
Reporting back here: I found cinematic working for me now. But at times it stops working seemingly random as I cannot replicate it. I typically have to either disable the stability and then re-enable it before recording. Also, I can definitely confirm stability doesn’t work if I place an external third party lens for the camera. My layman understanding is that the algorithm used is specific to the default iPhone aperture setting and so any external lenses will mess with it.
Hi there, Is there any remote shutter release in the app black magic ? purpose say smallrig handle with a bluetooth Shutter. I looked but cannot see any.

I love this app, but it is having some issues. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. When I start recording the zebras and focus peaking turn off. Also, sometimes when I hit record the video gets noticeably darker then what I was seeing being hitting record.

More than likely a storage issue
I guess because it’s over heated it’s unable to run the app smoothly. It happens to me many times cause I live in tropical country

I use the app with the Insta360 flow and I have basic controls, so I can start and stop with the gimbal. For me, this in enough now.

Blackmagic is only using Apple log which unfortunately is only available on the iphone 15 models. Hopefully they sort this out is future updates.

Unfortunately not. You can crop and rotate the shots in editing apps ect but you'll lose a good portion of the shots.

The highlights get blown out at around 93 zebras with iPhone 13 Pro max. How do they behave with 15 Pro max and apple log? Anyone?

I think this is a bug in the app. A lot of people have said this to me. Hopefully this gets fixed in the next update.

Apart from iso it seems to retain my last settings used. In all honesty though Cinema P3 is currently better and well priced too.

It doesn't take photos. Video only.
Can you try the Bluetooth accessory and nucleus nano to pull focus? There’s a “accessories” section in settings

Zoom is only working from 1x to 18x.

Some people have found them in their files app. Not sure otherwise to be honest.
is there any way to get stabilized out without gimbal...out is very shaky.
There are stronger levels of the stabilization mode within the app however they lag slightly whilst shooting.
I do t see front cam option in mine..ls there another version maybe?
You should do. If you press on the top left 'LENS' the front camera option should then appear on the right of the screen.

Is there a way to close the aperture? otherwise the only way to lower the exposure during very bright scenes is to decrease the shutter speed..
Aperture on a smartphone is fixed so you would need to use ND filters. That way you can keep exposure down and you film like fps and ss.

My recorded clip are only photos, not videos. That’s what I noticed about them.
Oh sorry just wanted to point out something else with the app, after dropping the iso to the lowest "34" and using the preset of the white balance to outdoor sunny, everything outside was overblown and exposed, however, i got myself a "ND filter" but that even did not work everything was still overblown, this should not be happening once the ND filter is added, is it because there is a problem with the app or am i doing something wrong, thank u kindly.
You want you shutter speed to be double your frame rate like 25fps = 1/50ss. If you have done this then it may be that the ND filter isn't strong enough to expose for outside? Also it's had to expose for indoors and outdoors at the same time without additional light indoors.
Thank u so much my friend yes u were right i fixed the problem as u suggested, i have a last question and will not bother u anymore lol, if a scene that i am filming requires an indoor and an outdoor shot and i use the ND filter for the outdoor should i continue using the ND filter for the indoor too so the shots don't look different.
If the windows aren't in the shot then I wouldn't bother. You can always look back at those shots to make sure they are lit with a good level of continuity.@@inhouseproductions1762

I believe they actually took that option away in the latest update. Can't remember why though.
Hi. I’m using an iPhone 14 Pro and the Blackmagic app only allows me to go up to 30fps.
That definitely shouldn't be the case. Uninstall and then re-install the app. This might fix the issue.
@@SmartphoneFilmmaker hi. Thanks for this. Reinstalled and it now offers up to 60fps. However I know what the issue was now. It won’t let me record in anything higher than 30fps if the codec is set to any of the apple pro res codecs but if the codec is set to either hevc or h.264 then it’s fine.
It's a good applicatio, with a lot of potential....but one of the things I've noticed when chatting to other people I work with, is the very noticable lag when moving the phone. Especially on older iphones like an iphone12. When using it plan coverage or scene blocking it can be a little jarring.
Definitely. Oh I haven't used it loads yet but I did notice a tiny bit of that and I thought it was just me. Good to know. Will be interesting to see how this app develops.
I’ve just tried filming with ProRes 4444 on an iPhone 13 Pro (and also an iPad Pro M2 which records the phone screen and the TV in the room so I can see any lag) so it’s recording at approx 120mb second (and recording a proxy) and there is no discernible lag. I filmed in a room with the cricket on TV and I can see the ball strikes on my iPhone monitor and the TV as being as near as frame perfect as possible. I always film in airplane mode and I never have an other apps running whilst I’m filming.
@@ThisOldManOfTheSea Are you shooting with the camera locked off? As there is definite input latency when the camera/phone is in motion on an iphone 15 it's barely noticable but very visible on an iphone 14 pro max when in motion
Just tried the same test with ProRes 4444 and this time I had Matrix Resurrections playing with subtitles. This time the iPhone was in permanent motion of up/down and left/right whilst recording. Stabilisation was set to Standard (same as before) and once again there was no discernible lag. Version of App is 1.0.10003

What’s the difference of the motion stabilization settings? I thought extreme would mean better stability but it seems standard is more stable when shaking. Cinematic creates blurring when shaking. Anybody else notice this?
The more extreme the selection the smooth playback will be supposedly although I haven't found cinematic stabilization modes all that great either.
Reporting back here: I found cinematic working for me now. But at times it stops working seemingly random as I cannot replicate it. I typically have to either disable the stability and then re-enable it before recording. Also, I can definitely confirm stability doesn’t work if I place an external third party lens for the camera. My layman understanding is that the algorithm used is specific to the default iPhone aperture setting and so any external lenses will mess with it.
How to turn on the flash? I cant seem to find a button to turn it on.
As this is video only there is no flash feature.

In settings - camera turn on 'Use volume button to trigger record' this should allow remote recording with bluetooth

it does indeed work. Moment emailed in the week to say their app would work. So a quick look around in Black Magic and volume to trigger works. Beastcam nope. Shame as I prefer there layout.@@nickdoum

Probably using an external SSD. Otherwise Airdrop could take ages depending on file size ect.

I love this app, but it is having some issues. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. When I start recording the zebras and focus peaking turn off. Also, sometimes when I hit record the video gets noticeably darker then what I was seeing being hitting record.
That’s strange. Most strange glitches like that can be fixed by uninstalling and re-installing the app.

I would always keep the iso number as low as possible to give you the cleanest image.

Unfortunately not properly no. You can select a clip, press the 'i' for info and the reel, scene and take number is listed there.

Only if you have the iPhone 15 can you use log. Otherwise there are no flat or log profiles.

Iso is only on auto when your shutter speed is left on auto.
