    This documentary is gold to me. I had little knowledge about early slavic people now i have more and understand it better. Im a croat, obviously a slav so its important to me. Slavs have pretty great and interesting history and are great people, bad systems and wars destabilized us and made many problems but we all can go forward and develop now in peace towards good and prosperous life.

      Она,зола обладала антибактериальными свойствами.
      А соль которую мы знаем считали вредной и применяли только для консервации чего то

    7:43 "Come to rule and to own us" is incorrect and very tendentious ( i.e. implying the Russian slave mentality, an idea russophobes love to promote) "Come and be our prince, and rule over us." is the correct translation.

    • @tatyanakol
      @tatyanakol 4 года назад +7

    • @tatyanakol
      @tatyanakol 4 года назад +3

      Leonidas 1028 not wasn’t the case. You need to know what was happening at that time: land was split into principalities and the people of each principality picked their Prince who’s job was to protect the people from their enemies- khans at that time. Their princes couldn’t do it well because they had many tasks to do- building cities, serving as judges and etc. Khans and their people continued to attack Russian villages and burning villages and taking captives to serve as slaves. Russian princes and their elders heard about Vikings as people who like to fight and that was their calling. And they decided to invite and hire them as their army that will protect them from khans. They decided to let those who like fighting to fight and all the craftsmen, farmers and others continue work in their trade. Vikings were paid to protect the Russians from different enemies that kept destroying Russian economy and people. And Russian people think it was a win-win situation.

      WTF are you talking about? "Volodet'", or "vladet'", "владеть", means exactly "to own"!
      "Volodet' nami" = to own us

    • @tatyanakol
      @tatyanakol 4 года назад +4

      Dick Faggotson Russian language changed a lot if we compare it to modern language. Vladet means be powerful, manage. It didn’t say to treat them as slaves. And throughout Russian history including early days when Ruling Prince didn’t fulfill his obligations to protect them, judge them and other criteria was shifted from that position to a minor and another took his position. Therefore, people in Russia had power to change their princes.

    The "Norman theory" of the emergence of the Russian state is not correct. It originated in the 17th century, when Swedish historians used it to justify Swedish expansion in Eastern Europe. In the same XVIII century, Mikhail Lomonosov objected to the Normanist historians, claiming that the Russ came from Slavic lands.
    He considered them Prussians who lived on the Eastern-southern shores of the Varangian (Baltic) sea. In this case, the Russ could also come "from across the sea." There is also a version that the summoned Varangians came from the polabian Slavs-obodrites. By the way, their largest city was called Rerik and was located on the Baltic sea coast.
    The Slavic version of the origin of the Varangians-Russ a couple of centuries before Lomonosov was expressed by the Austrian historian, adviser to the Ambassador in Moscow Russia, Baron Sigismund von Herberstein. He wrote: "the Russians summoned their princes rather from the Vagrians or Varangians than handed over power to foreigners who differed from them in faith, customs, and language." In principle, this is quite logical, because, as described by the same "Tale of bygone years", on the eve of the vocation of Rurik (in Slavonic Raroga), Slovene, Krivichi, all and Chud expelled foreigners (Scandinavians) from their lands "and did not give them tribute".

    • @day2148
      @day2148 4 года назад +3

      uh, what? Pretty sure the original evidence of Russian Varangian history comes from Nestor's Primary Chronicle, circa 1113
      That's what most historians accept as the origin of "Rus". Or, as Ted-Ed best put it, the old Rus was "populated by Slavs, ruled by Vikings"

      I think scientific and historiographic community is way beyond simplistic Normanist vs Slavist theories from 18th and 19th century. In fact if anything both theories were result of wars between Russia and Sweden. Before that time there was little doubt Rurik came from across the sea because practically every genealogy and chronicle written after Nestor's chronicle repeated that part. But that was about Rurik not nation as a whole. In times of Rurik nations in modern sense weren't yet formed and most peoples were mixture of several groups and often times rulling classes started out with different ethnicity than majority of population they ruled over. Later it happened in most european countries of the times. Germanic elite was absorbed into Romance speakers in Gaul/France, Spain and Italy. Does having Germanic Visigothic nobility 1400 make modern Spainiards less Spanish and less proud of their country? Heck no.
      Same thing happened in Bulgaria where Turkic Bulgars were absorbed in Slavs. On the other hand if newcomers come in sufficient numbers reverse thing happens and newcomers assimilate the previous population. This happened when Angles and Saxons invaded Britain and it also happened when Slavs expanded in the Balkans and it probably happened when Slavs expanded to the northeast and they absorbed Finnic peoples that were already living there. Since Rurik and his clansmen did not manage to spread Norse language but instead took on Slavic language and even religion in just several decades it is clear they were not very numerous. Besides you are confusing two important things, documentary is talking about origin of Rurik himself and his kinsmen who formed rulling class and they were certainly not Slavs but in following generations were slavicized. There is little doubt majority of ordinary people in the north of Russia were primarily Slavs and Finnic peoples.

    I love it, BUT at 11'11" it says that by the 9th century, the Byzantine had a surface area of 3,5 M km2, this is wrong, that was the greatest extent under Emperor Justinian in 555. By the 9th, the Muslims had conquered the eastern part of the empire (the Levant, what is today Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, Jordan), Egypt and the African coast, plus even most of the spanish peninsula. I estimate that looking at that map, the Empire was no greater than 1,5 mlllion km2 at that time. The writers made a mistake by looking up the number for the area, and did not notice it was for the maximum area 300 years earlier. This should be corrected because it is a big factual error. And of course, the writers should mention Ukraine at least not just Russia, as if only Russia was the inheritor of the Kievan Rus, whereas in fact, it's nearly all on the present territory of modern Ukraine and Belarus.

    • @cianakril

      I don't see this series mention Russia at all before the last 2 episodes where Rurikids were ruling from Vladimir and Moscow and were only beginning to create united Russia. Why Ukraine and Belarus should be mention in this series as neither of this countries had Rurikids after being split by Poles from the Rus and neither of the countries existed before the split (and in fact, long after)? This series is focused on the Rurikid dynasty not the general history of Eastern Europe, and those tell about political entities ruled by the dynasty in chronological order.

The territories ruled historically by the Rurikids include 3 countries today, it’s important to clarify that, otherwise it will be misused by nationalist or right wing imperial propaganda :-), so that’s my concern. Clarity should be foremost since most people are very ignorant of history and demagogue often manipulate it for their own power goals. And this can lead to wars, which is regrettable :-(.

      Have you ever read the Ynglinga saga?
      If you read this saga, then you should know that Odin took the peoples of Ásaheimr and Vanaheimr to Gardariki. According to the saga, Asaheimr was located east of the modern Don River, which in the saga is called Vana-Kvísl.
      Vanaheim was located west of the Don River.
      From Gardariki, Odin went to the land of the Saxons, and from the land of the Saxons to Denmark, to the island of Funen.
      How could the Swedes create Russia if, at the time of Odin exodus, Gardariki was already there? Mmm?
      If modern-day Britain is ruled by the Saxe-Coburg-Gotta dynasty, does this mean that the Germans founded Britain?
      6370 The Slavs, the tributaries, of the Varangians drove them back beyond the sea and, refusing them further tribute, set out to govern themselves. There was no law among them, but tribe rose against tribe. Discord thus ensued among them, and they began to war one against another. They said to themselves: "Let us seek a prince who may rule over us, and judge us according to the law." They accordingly went overseas to the Varangian Rus: these particular Varangians were known as Rus, just as some are called Swedes, and others Normans, Angles, and Goths, for they were thus named. The Chuds, the Slavs, and the Krivichians then said to the people of Rus: "Our whole land is great and rich, but there is no order in it. Come to rule and reign over us." They thus selected three brothers, with their kinfolk, who took with them all the Rus, and migrated. The oldest, Rurik, located himself in Novgorod; the second, Sineus, in Beloozero; and the third, Truvor, in Izborsk. On account of these Varangians, the district of Novgorod became known as Russian (Rus) land. The present inhabitants of Novgorod are descended from the Varangian race, but aforetime they were Slavs. . . . (C) Russian Primary Chronicle, the end of the ХI - the beginning of the XII centuries.
      The chronicler Nestor explicitly indicates that the Varangians were not Swedes, Norwegians, British or Gotlanders.
      6370 year of the Slavic calendar from the creation of the world corresponds to 862 AD.

      Observer of the Northern Lights Well, you are totally missing the point: fun fact is that africans actually are us - therefore we are all africans. As supposed to the idea of röhiruk aka Rurik is not an idea of where people originated from - rather a theory which most historians claim are the most probable (thesis). Some historians even claim that the word ”rus” is from the region where Rurik came from: Roslagen, pronounced {ruuslagen}. Your theory has less followers than mine although i agree that we don’t have synthesis in this matter nor will we have. I just explained why swedes today are in another haplo group than russians.
