    I was born in TO back in '82. Spent my whole life either downtown or in the GTA. Thought I was meant for the big city, but a quick trip to St. John's in 2014 taught me otherwise. Two years later I was packing up the car and moving. Just celebrated my fifth year in NL 🤘🖖

      My parents were from villages in Trinity Bay, but we three boys were born and raised in Toronto. I'd move "down home" in a hearbeat but for my wife.
      Dad drove us there nearly every summer. We always cried when it was time to leave. I love my country but Newfoundland will always be first in my heart.

    We are from Germany and explored Newfoundland in 2019. Because of traveling in September, we can not say anything about the snow. But with the rest we confirm: Great landscape super-friendly people, very good food! And expensive, yes, but worth it. That‘s why we go there again for 3 weeks in September 2024. I plan on moving to Corner Brook early next summer when I retire. Yes, Newfoundland is a spectacularly beautiful province, the people are incredible, and so is the nature. But the best thing about Newfoundland is something that's very hard to put into words, and everyone who has felt it will know what I'm talking about. It is just a magical place. It gets into your soul, it pulls you in, it calls to you. I've travelled to many beautiful places in my life, but Newfoundland is on another level. So yeah, I'm going to live there, and I can't wait! To make a comment about the snow: the storm he was referring to was an isolated event that shut the city of St. John’s down for about a week. Some years are better then others. Most years I use my snowblower 5-10 times a year. What I find here is we don’t really get a spring, just an extension of winter. So I like to call it sprinter. Anyway stay safe from Newfoundland

Hearing you talk about newfoundland with such positivity brought great happiness to me. There are some people that just don't get it. My only problem with this video and many other videos about Newfoundland is the fact that St. John's is the only place that gets mentioned, you cannot fully appreciate the province of Newfoundland if you stay in the city, you have to go out to the little bay towns and inlets. Go to central, or Western. Do NOT stay in st johns and expect to get the best experience of what Newfoundland has to offer. I live in central and personally I am not a fan of St. John's, it's too big and busy.

      I grew up in St. John's and moved away to Ontario in my twenties because I wanted a career. I was fortunate enough to make a great career which allowed me to retire at age 57. My wife and I moved back to "a little bay town" Central NL (my wife is from there), big mistake. My youth in St. John's did not prepare me for the uneducated, uncouth, ignorant, nosy, small minded, petty, childish nature of the majority of people that I now find myself amongst. Oh sure, they are friendly, at least to your face. Meanwhile they have lots to say behind your, and everyone else's, back. I guess that's what you get when 90% of the people here work just 14 weeks to qualify for UI and live on government assistance the rest of the year. Just finishing high school here is a relatively remarkable accomplishment. Hate it here and will be getting the hell out.

    • @dinkster1729
      @dinkster1729 8 месяцев назад

      @@joshramesy4306 "Around the bay" is definitely a different experience from St John's. I guess Central Newfoundland hasn't changed too much. How does your wife find being back home?

    • @joshramesy4306
      @joshramesy4306 8 месяцев назад

      @@dinkster1729 Funny, even though she is from there she couldn't stand it either. We finally packed it in and moved to St. John's and are much happier for it. Until you live there you don't realize that rural NL has become a cesspool of government assistance dependency. It's bad. The level of entitlement is staggering. People do not want to work full time jobs and will only accept "seasonal work" long enough to "get their weeks" and get back on the dole. Consequently they have no ambition to get an education, start an enterprise, learn new things or do much of anything beyond gossip. It's soul destroying. A boat factory in Centreville near where we were has had to bring in foreign workers even though most of the community is on UI. Same for the fish plant in Glovertown. Blatant fraud that's encouraged by the provincial government who want the federal UI money income. We were disgusted and couldn't stand to be around it anymore. People who wax poetic about NL and say they are proud to be from rural NL obviously have no moral problem living off the hard work and welfare of others. Disgraceful.

Wecan get a lot of wet damp weather with our snow and i always say winter boots that are made in Canada and sold in N,L. , in particular the east coast should come with a tag line "This does not apply to St. John's and surrounding areas of the east coast" . The January storm we had up to 110cm of snow, and then in some places around 30cm after, everything was shut down for a week just for the sake of snow clearing. Snowfall around St. John's isn't usually too bad thanks to proximity to the gulf stream. The west coast usually sees more thanks to the Labrador current. That January storm was a major abnormality, granted if we see more snowfalls like that going forward id say its safe to say climate change is at work.

      Public transportation is horrendous - so a vehicle is definitely needed, finding a family doctor can be a challenge, and jobs can be scarce.
      We have most of the big box stores and a lively local business scene, so you probably won't feel like there's things you can't get here. Generally safe here, just don't walk around shady looking places at night as probably with any large town.

    Snow? I left St John's in late December of 1977. I had been in Newfoundland (and Labrador) since May of 1970 most of the time. It rained all the time in St John's when I was there. I recall 2 blizzards, but really mostly what I recall is the endless rain and grey skies. Are you telling me that there is more snow now than rain in St John's? I did know that it had more precipation than any other major city in the country, but not more snow. Maybe, this is why Rex Murphy denies global warming: His home town now has more snow days than rain days?

    I moved to Newfoundland from the west side of the country. It was great except for the lack of medical and dental services. If you plan on dying from a preventable disease that is misdiagnosed, this is the place for you! If you want to get silver fillings and plan on never have braces for your children, do it! It is a great place to visit - being raised in this area and having the explore to the rest of the planet, I would never live in Newfoundland.

      There are no bicycle lanes . Only one main highway crosses the island ( with hundreds of side roads along the way). Depending on the area you are in, the road will be mostly two lanes ( one in each direction), with plenty of PASSING LANES built in along the way. Highway shoulders are gravel. Unless you are near any major towns, highway traffic is very light. Many have crossed the island by bicycle - it's definitely do-able ! Crossing Newfoundland is basically a 325 mile drive through the forest where you will come upon a town here and there. BRING YOUR CAMERA !

      As soon as possible, go to a shopping mall and buy a good winter coat, waterproof snowboots, a warm wool cap and gloves. You will probably also need some sweaters/Hoosier to wear underneath. A scarf will also help. If you do not have a vehicle, then make sure to buy a bus pass it will make public transportation cheaper. Good luck and welcome to Newfoundland.

    Surprising you would make a video about this and not address the elephant in the room; that is to address the question why are there more Newfoundlanders living outside of the province, than in it? The answer to that is because of the significant challenges that exist to making a good living there. Unless you can move back to a good job in hand, most people are going to have a lot of problems.
