The burnt field arc is my favorite arc of the anime, which is saying a lot considering how utterly amazing the Hina bullying arc is. Everything from the powerful visual metaphors to voice acting is perfection. How they managed to make me love Shimada so much and yet still want to root for Yanagihara is really incredible.
God, the Burnt Field arc is so incredible! I love the symbolism sooooo much!! But yes, the power of this show to make you root for the main characters BOTH in this match is incredible! Thank you for the comment! I LOVE THIS ARC!
1:06 I really agree about how Rei's small victories and character developments feel more impactful than some of the more "bombastic" major moments you might see in other series. I personally relate strongly to Rei in terms of trauma and depression, and those little moments of healing and perspective feel close to things I've experienced. They're not sudden breakthroughs that make everything better forever, but they slowly build up and provide reasons to keep going. And gradually life feels a bit brighter. Also the visuals are a given, but the music in this episode is amazing too. I don't know how to put it into words but the song they kept coming back to in Saku's thoughts is so powerful. The scene at 22 min (29:06) with the song reaching a crescendo alongside the sound of fire crackling makes me feel so many things. 37:30 The separation of genders really bothers me too as a fan of both Shogi and Go. They're completely mental sports and it limits the community and enjoyment of the games to cut people off from possible competitions like that. When you love a game surely you'd want as many people to play against as possible, no? They are very old games so there's certainly an element of "tradition" there, but I hope it changes eventually, preferably soon.
Yessss, Rei is such a beautiful example of someone going through depression, trauma, but is handling it all with so much grit and determination and it feels SO good to watch him succeed and grow, even in the tiniest ways! I love how all these little moments build up for us the audience! But yes, the music and visuals together are gorgeous in this series! That moment you talk about in this comment is SO GOOD! Yeah, the idea of a game of mental gymnastics, not physical, being separated by genders is...strange to me in this modern era at least, but maybe in the future that will change! Thank you for the comment and kind words!
The imagery Umino-san chose here to me stands out in a different way from what it had previous watch throughs. This time I considered the comparison to this vs the Hina bullying arc from the aspect of how they are both being used to represent the extremes in a point that is reached on the journey of life. When you look at it that way, the imagery of a murky darkness used to accentuate the Hina bullying arc vs the fear of a burnt field and lighting yourself on fire to keep it at bay makes for an interesting contrast.
Both MAL and Imdb have March Comes in Like a Lion sitting at about 8/10 and S2 on MAl is at 8.9. However yea, on Mal its a few over 200,000 with it being in the lower 200,000's for season 2, and Imdb is only 3,500. Multiple large reaction channels have reacted to it and it wins polls, but yea.
I really like sangatsu, but reflecting what you said, Kyoko was superficially developed and her brother appears in flashes. I think the author wanted to address this part of the story but gave up along the way. I understand, but this deserves more.
I really hope that when we get to the future of the series, we see more with both of them! I doubt it will be this season, but hopefully in the future!
Shimada may be the most heterosexual guy in March in your eyes but my Yaoi Goggles have the wrong prescription and is making me do crackships between him and characters he hasn't even been in a room with. Hear me out. Hear me out. . . . . Shimada x Hayashida (They're literally Rei's "dads" at this point) Or hear me out again. . . . Gotou x Shimada (Toxic old man yaoi)

That is a really nice comparison between the two scenes! Thanks for the comments and for bringing that up! :D
The animation is great
It's absolutely GORGEOUS! Thank you for the comment!
