    Baseball history is FULL of wacky characters, and perhaps one of the wackiest of all was a guy known as Rube Waddell. From gator wrestling, chasing fire trucks mid-game, and his notorious drunkenness to his legendary baseball skills and knack for saving lives, Rube Waddell had one hell of a life- and one hell of a criminal record too. Jacksonville resident here, the team being named the Cummers is in reference to the once powerful and wealthy Cummer family, whose Riverside mansions have since been converted into one of the best local art museums. I volunteered there in highschool! Also, Jacksonville in general was really interesting around this time; being the railroad hub of Florida and a major port, it had a really diverse population and the Lavilla neighborhood was known as the Harlem of the South. The first use of the word blues, Ray Charles' first performances, a Beatles concert that the band had to nearly boycott to have integrated, James Weldon Johnson and many other critical artistic moments from American history happened here, primarily in a neighborhood that was bulldozed in the 90s.

One of my personal favorites: one time while he was playing with the Red Sox he left the field and went through a door in the left field wall to take a piss mid-game: there isn't a toilet back there, but in his words he "figured it out." His family didn't know he played baseball until they saw a segment on the news about him being drafted to the minor leagues straight out of high school. He named both of his sons Manny Jr. The channel Baseball Doesn't Exist did a video on him going through the major highlights of his career, and it's too insane to be fictional.

    I know you cautioned against diagnosing him, but I personally feel it's safe to say he falls under the umbrella of neurodivergent -- he certainly thought very differently to most people! And I really don't think of that category as a pathology. Disability is an invention of society, and what types of people it chooses to accommodate. E.g. having a mild visual disability is fine bc glasses and lasik are in common use, but having chronic pain or an autoimmune disorder means you're a "problem" bc you need unpredictable time off work, and workplaces are not set up to account for this.

    Rube Waddell was really the Rasputin 2.0. Apparently life and death were having a really odd and if only tipsy a rather drunken poker game to see what would take both men out. So fascinating how such people have living such wild and interesting life's and more so as to how they end.

  • @VinceWhitacre

    Baseball at the turn of the 20th century had a tendency of giving players increasingly cruel nicknames - players from the country were called "Rube" (regardless of their gullibility), hefty players were called "Fatty" or... um... "Blimp," and I am absolutely not going to repeat what dark-complected players were called in baseball's segregated days.
    Couldn't click on this one fast enough. Waddell is one of the greatest "Kaz Rowe Video Characters" in baseball history.

    • @Hippidippimahm

      “Dark-complected” should not be in your vocabulary at this point. Do better.

    • @VinceWhitacre
      @VinceWhitacre 2 года назад +19

      @@Hippidippimahm that is a fair point. What I was trying to say is that regardless of their ethnicity (at the time, remember that Major League Baseball was strictly segregated) players whose skin was dark were given racist nicknames.

    • @a-rat-in-your-walls
      @a-rat-in-your-walls 2 года назад +22

      @@Hippidippimahm I don't mean this in a rude way, but what's wrong with dark-complected? It seems to just he saying someone has a dark completion, so if there's a racist history behind the term I'd love to hear it.

    As a baseball fanatic and history buff I was familiar with this story. What’s intriguing is that it shows up on this channel.
    EXCELLENT job of telling the story from a “every day” perspective. That perspective might be out of context however.
    There’s a lot of drudgery in the lifestyle of athletics, and much more so back then, when they played all day games. Those guys had decent money for their time and free evenings. Added together with the varying educational accomplishments of these guys and you ended up with a lot of characters. Babe Ruth was nicknamed “Babe” because he grew up in an orphanage and never went anywhere until he got out of the orphanage at age 18. The first time he was in a hotel he rode the elevator all day for fun.
    Good job with this story and the channel

    Also funny enough my dad pitched for his baseball team growing up and still pitches now and is ambidextrous, throwing mainly with his left! It’s funny how many pitchers are left handed.
