Jacksonville resident here, the team being named the Cummers is in reference to the once powerful and wealthy Cummer family, whose Riverside mansions have since been converted into one of the best local art museums. I volunteered there in highschool! Also, Jacksonville in general was really interesting around this time; being the railroad hub of Florida and a major port, it had a really diverse population and the Lavilla neighborhood was known as the Harlem of the South. The first use of the word blues, Ray Charles' first performances, a Beatles concert that the band had to nearly boycott to have integrated, James Weldon Johnson and many other critical artistic moments from American history happened here, primarily in a neighborhood that was bulldozed in the 90s.

HOW does this not have more views?? Recently found your channel, Kaz, and I've got to say... I absolutely love every video I've seen. This is definitely in the top 5.
Baseball at the turn of the 20th century had a tendency of giving players increasingly cruel nicknames - players from the country were called "Rube" (regardless of their gullibility), hefty players were called "Fatty" or... um... "Blimp," and I am absolutely not going to repeat what dark-complected players were called in baseball's segregated days. Couldn't click on this one fast enough. Waddell is one of the greatest "Kaz Rowe Video Characters" in baseball history.
@@Hippidippimahm that is a fair point. What I was trying to say is that regardless of their ethnicity (at the time, remember that Major League Baseball was strictly segregated) players whose skin was dark were given racist nicknames.
@@Hippidippimahm I don't mean this in a rude way, but what's wrong with dark-complected? It seems to just he saying someone has a dark completion, so if there's a racist history behind the term I'd love to hear it.
I’m in Jacksonville and I need you to know there’s an art museum here LITERALLY CALLED THE CUMMERBUND MUSEUM. IT DID NOT GET BETTER AFTER THE VICTORIAN AGE IN FACT. Though we do have a Sappho street which is lovely.
Thanks, Kaz, for this thorough review of Rube Waddell's life. As far as I can tell, you enjoyed making this video, and I definitely enjoyed learning something about his quirky deeds.
To be honest I'm kinda shocked people back then were questioning the age gap of 19-34 considering it was very common for arranged marriages between teenage girls and old men back then.
12:35 since you mentioned in the beginning that Rube also enjoyed making animal noises I could very well imagine that he would do them before eating the cracker.
Super interesting video, but also you are one of the only people who I’ve heard pronounce my last name correctly. Its always mispronounced as “waddle” which I understand if you are just seeing it for the first time but it has become a nickname that I really hate. Anyways, keep up the great work!
Initially I clicked on this video because Waddell is my stepdad’s last name (possible ancestor?) And I’m glad that I did because I kept laughing at all of the hilarious things Rube did. What a man. ⚾️🐊🎣
Why Jiji didn't get a tiny cap? The problem with quirky people, is that they're only fun when you're not the one dealing with them, when you actually have to suffer the consequences of their actions, you realize they're not quirky, they're just assholes.
i thought nothing in this vid woud get me until i heard “jacksonville comers” at which point i fully broke down into hysterical laughter. beautiful video

Why is there not a Rube movie yet?! (probably cause way too much happened for it all to be covered in a movie)
The stakes just kept getting higher every time I thought “surely it can’t get weirder than this” 😂
If Rube stepped on lego barefeet, the lego piece would crack
I appreciate that you're still telling people to wash their hands and wear a mask. Feels like a lot of people have given up on things this far in.
"Don't Go Chasing Firetrucks" is probably the long awaited follow-up to "Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls"
Baseball has all the best stories. I'm sure I don't know why. But this was a clssic baseball story in every possible way. Thank you
Love that he bared it all so people could live. What a true hero 🔥🦸🏻♂️ 🙌
Just want to say I just found your channel and I am loving your content. It is right up my alley.
Also, if you look at the history of early baseball it is full of interesting characters.
As a baseball fan particularly enthused by the sport's long and often strange history, thank you for deeply enriching my life with this knowledge. New all-time favorite player unlocked
13:43 well, that escalated quickly
I recently discovered your channel from the gay cowboy video and I have been binging your videos since then. Your videos are so well thought out, interesting, and you are a wonderful presence. This is the best history class I’ve ever been in.
I recently discovered my great-great grandpa and Rube's mom were siblings. Making Rube my 1st cousin 3x removed.
When the tism is stronger than Baseball, I love this story, this is great
And this is proof that the algorithm knows what it's doing. One of your videos popped up in my feed, the one concerning the production of Wizard of Oz, and a few hours and a few dog walks later I had watched several more, including this absolute gem. I love your work, please keep it up. And whatever you do, find another excuse to do another baseball video, if for no other reason than your pronunciation of the sport's name, which is quite endearing. Seriously, I love your work and look forward to checking out more of it. Great content!
You rock love the videos, showing love to the oddities that history hasn’t paid much mind to
Seeing Tutter in every video is a real highlight of my day
as someone on the autsim spectrum and with adhd, rube feels like a Kindred Spirit
That dad polo is of the finest quality 👌🔥🤠
That placket!
I'm reading through the comments and man, baseball history is wild
I do get tired of people calling everyone autistic if they're a little weird as someone with autism. However him being gullable mixed with the misunderstanding of social norms sounds like he's got a bit of the 'tism. and I am proud.
Edit: Just got to the end of the video... lol sorry. Autism is not something that is wrong with you, though.(as it took me years of therapy to accept.)
"he's got a bit of the 'tism" i absolutely love this
Yes, it is something that is wrong with you.
@@sarahrobertson634 Is being a fishy cunted twat what's wrong with you?
@@NerdySabbath Yup.
@@sarahrobertson634but it’s not? Just because someone’s brain works differently than the majority doesn’t necessarily mean they’re something “wrong” with them they just learn differently 🤷🏼♀️
That was an amasing story. Thank you for sharing it!
I don't think anyone can assign this person as anything. He is the definition of "chaotic". 😂
This is something of a comfort video for me for some reason, thank you
HOW does this not have more views??
“Dark-complected” should not be in your vocabulary at this point. Do better.
As someone from western Pennsylvania I love hearing the way people say our town names and I mean this genuinely it is very fun
Thanks, Kaz, for this thorough review of Rube Waddell's life. As far as I can tell, you enjoyed making this video, and I definitely enjoyed learning something about his quirky deeds.
This dose of serotonin in needed right now. Thank you so much💕
Same!
To be honest I'm kinda shocked people back then were questioning the age gap of 19-34 considering it was very common for arranged marriages between teenage girls and old men back then.
12:35 since you mentioned in the beginning that Rube also enjoyed making animal noises I could very well imagine that he would do them before eating the cracker.
the straw hat shit sounds like exactly the kind of bizarre convention that would be observed by characters in an I Think You Should Leave sketch
I'm loving this guy.👏🤣 They need to make a movie. I'd buy a ticket.
OMFG, just wow. I am still giggling over the geese!!
Rube is basically my life goals. Fish and play as the fancy takes you
"rube had to sign in his contract that he wouldn't eat animal crackers in bed"
me, watching this video while eating animal crackers in bed: 😶
Be thankful
Super interesting video, but also you are one of the only people who I’ve heard pronounce my last name correctly. Its always mispronounced as “waddle” which I understand if you are just seeing it for the first time but it has become a nickname that I really hate. Anyways, keep up the great work!
Initially I clicked on this video because Waddell is my stepdad’s last name (possible ancestor?) And I’m glad that I did because I kept laughing at all of the hilarious things Rube did. What a man. ⚾️🐊🎣
Love the shirt💛
Why Jiji didn't get a tiny cap?
The problem with quirky people, is that they're only fun when you're not the one dealing with them, when you actually have to suffer the consequences of their actions, you realize they're not quirky, they're just assholes.
i thought nothing in this vid woud get me until i heard “jacksonville comers” at which point i fully broke down into hysterical laughter. beautiful video
Honestly I’m no longer sure if you make all these stories up but I live for them 🥰
Never heard of him, but an interesting story.
The “don’t go chasing fire engines” makes me think of the song waterfalls. Lol
Don’t go chasing fire engines, listening to the sirens and and the horn like you used to…
This is a great video. All I knew about baseball before this was the basic concept and that Captain Sisko really likes it but now I can tell people a wild story.
I just wanted to say I audibly gasped when I saw "Hickman Flooded". I have never known any other with the name hickman, I'll have to move to that town.
