Always loved Kelly's voice. He was such a big part ELO's vocal harmonies. The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame made a big mistake in not including him as one of the recipients when ELO were inducted. How could they possibly overlook the fact that he was one of the core members during the heights of their success from the mid '70s all the way to the early '80s? He clearly deserves one of the trophies and it should have been awarded posthumously to someone in his family.
Truer words have never been spoken....you dont have the great elo, aka magnificent 7 without Kelly's great vocal presence on record ...and great presence during Elo's live concerts....jeff Lynne should have made sure kelly got his well deserved bonus , without having to beg (or sue) for it.. after their great 7 year run ...and at least mention Kelly's name during Elo's entrance into the rock hall of fame ... i just dont understand...sad

The song "Poker" is another where Kelly really stands out. Sounds like all of the layered vocals are coming from Kelly himself. Don't know if Jeff sang at all on that track, as it sounds like it's all Kelly. That upbeat rocker of a song is one of my ELO favorites!
He looked completely different without his facial hair. I'm having difficulty thinking this sounds very ELOish. Great singer. RIP into the blue sky and thank you.
Thank you for posting this! I always loved hearing Kelly's contributions on ELO albums, and definitely miss hearing him now. His passing was such a surprise, and he is greatly missed.
One can't blame Kelly for writing his own music and wanting to record it. A rather nice album who failed commercially but I listen to it regularly. Obviously influenced by Jeff Lynne and some of the songs, especially Am I A Dreamer would fit perfectly on The Xanadu soundtrack!
excelente el trabajo en el bajo para las canciones de ELO, El fue integrante cuando la ELO fue posicionado como los mejores grupos del Mundo y parte de los sucesos mas grandes de la banda. RIP por siempre gran hombre.
The album itself might not be a masterpiece but Am I A Dreamer in particular is a potent pop song with clear ELO influences, not at all that strange considering Kelly being their bass player. An underrated artist and although not in the classic ELO league, his solo album has a place in my collection and I play it occasionally.
Not for much longer after this -- he was out of the band after having only contributed to four songs for Secret Messages, and said he missed his family while he was a member of ELO, and he also complained of not getting enough pay, hence his decision to quit ELO and sue Jeff.
I saw this on Dick Clark's American Bandstand FIRST RUN as it happened on the ABC Network AND recorded it on my 1981 Panasonic VHS Selectavision Video Cassette Recorder, as this one "elodevi" did, BUT, he beat me to posting it! I like how very gracefully Kelly said that he had some songs that he written and wanted to record for ELO, but Jeff didn't need any help doing so, "obviously". Yeah, I know there's alot of folks out there that mud sling Jeff Lynne for not allowing the majority of the members of ELO to be nothing more than a paid employee and to play the notes and chords as-is for the recordings and stand on stage and act it out, then go home. But, those of us who know the modern pop/rock music industry, that's pretty much the mindset of the most phenomenal & successful producers that have ever been...everybody from Phil Spector to Brian Wilson to Rick Rubin are pretty much the same way...and probably, that's the way it always will be. They may be nice guys and have the brightest minds known to man to ever create modern day music, but "Their Methods are Their Methods & Their Rules are Their Rules". Period. So be it. Still, for a short time, a very short time, good man Kelly got to venture out on his own to write and record his own material. Too bad his life was cut short a wee bit too early. - BCRadio.
On the surface, You Didn't Need To Hold Me Tights, sounds pretentious and syrupy but its actually a clean cut pop gem, highly melodic and well crafted, both melodically and lyrically with a great vocal from Kelly. Dreamer is a gem.
I remember finding out about Kelly being on American Bandstand that week and the world stopped. I had to see it!! I still have the LP that this is from and regret not getting it on CD when it came out in the late 90s/early 00s. Great to see this clip again. Brought me back to that Saturday afternoon.
The Kelly album was recorded in the summer of 1981, roughly round the time of ELOs album 'Time'. You Didn't Need To Hold Me Tight was not included on the British version of the album and was apparently recorded especially for the US release.
Kelly Grocutt was a paid employee of ELO . He signed yearly $64,000 employee contracts with no complaints. By 1983, Jeff Lynne demoted Kelly to studio background vocals only. In fact Jeff took over on bass in the studio as well. This was brought out by Kelly in a interview after he settled out of court for $386,000 with Jeff for back royalties. He quit ELO right after this solo album came out and filed suit against Jeff Lynne and ELO. RIP Kelly.
With out a doubt, Kelly was one of the Top 10 British Rock Bass players holding his own amongst the likes of Bill Wyman, Sir Paul, John Lodge, Chris "Ace" Kefford, Rick Huxley, Bruce Lancaster, Richard Thompson, & even though he's Canadian (my opinion) Geddy Lea.
Kelly did not sue Jeff Lynne until AFTER his solo record failed. Kelly owed alot of money to pay for the recording. He hired Bev, Richard, Mik and Louis Clark with a big orchestra. He thought he was going to cash in on ELO's success. After all, he had about 90% of the people in ELO at the time to participate. But Kelly made one BIG mistake. NO JEFF LYNNE. He was so angry, and sued Jeff for the cash to pay it off. So give Jeff Lynne a break! He is not the monster that many Kelly fans feels he is.
It was against management but sadly Jeff get caught up in all the mess because of Jeff's half ownership of the ELO name. and split Kelly and Jeff's Friendship = I blame Kelly's management who tried to cash in on ELO success = very sad and I know Kelly regretted it very much.
@@britainreynolds7365 it sure plays out that way...Kelly was due something at the end of Elo's great 7 year run...besides his yearly pay check...considering Kelly's unique voice blended perfectly with jeffs voice...jeff & Kelly were the elo sound, vocalist r due some royalties because its the sound of the group...maybe elo management were the selfish jerks.. but jeff could have back kelly...and came up with a fair figure for kelly before or after the time tour, just as a f in thank you for helping elo become a super group. .my guess if they had cut Kelly a $500,000 check all hard feelings would have been soothed, but no. . jeff told Kelly to read his contract...sounds like a jerk to me...so Kelly had to sue...and a judge agreed ...i believe Kelly was awarded approximately $450,000 ...as far as Kelly's record, he should have listened to jeff... that was Kelly's mistake but that bonus was due Kelly for all he did for elo...and management should have made sure it happen...but greed won out...even though in the end, Kelly did squeeze some of his earned bonus out the stingy elo management ..that was the end of elo in my opinion....and jeff had no problem throwing most of the magnificent 7 under the bus without a thought ... except for Richard Tandy
How much could this have cost to make though? This was recorded at a small studio in Burbank not at a huge expensive studio I heard. I bet it wasn't that pricey. Anybody know?
You Didn't Have To Hold Me Tight was specially recorded for the US version of the Kelly album and wasn't included on the UK version. The albums had different covers as well.
I just found this song last month. Can you believe that. Such a great song I never heard before. AND I never knew of the ELO problems. I'm sorry for them
I caught this show on tv back then. Bought the album and was really let down. It was a shadow of ELO that could never stand up on it's own. I've never heard the single on the radio or anywhere.
I saw this way back when it aired. I always tried to catch ABS every Saturday. They all lip synced, but as a young aspiring musician, it was a great way to see the bands and artists.
You can sure hear the ELO influence in his music. Not entirely different from what they were doing together at that time. He looks so different clean shaven. LOL!
Rather than it sounding like an inferior ELO, I think it instead demonstrates that Kelly was a big part of the ELO sound. I'm on nobody's side in the Kelly v Jeff episode, as as a fan of both I don't see any reason to be. Liking this album (I have it on vinyl and CD) isn't being disloyal to Jeff. All the 'experts' on the matter should remember they weren't there and don't know the whole story. Those who do know are understandably tight-lipped, and that's the way it should be.
So different without the afro and handlebar moustache. But his vocal harmonies were such an integral part of ELO's sound. So tragic that he was not even mentioned when ELO were inducted into the hall of fame! Even Roy Wood was invited back when he left soon after their formation. Kelly was there for their halcyon days and contributed so much to their overall sound. He was and will always be the sound of ELO!
You Didn't Need To Hold Me Tight wasn't on the original UK version of the album, obviously added for added commercial appeal to the US version released shortly after. Gone was the beard and big hair replaced by a clean shaven Kelly! Am I A Dreamer is my favourite but You Didn't Mean To Hold Me Tight is really catchy! As for the album itself, well its a mixed bag and certainly not a masterpiece but a rather good one.
Who is this man and what has he done to the real Kelly Groucutt!? Only kidding. This is Kelly alright although he DOES look like a complete different man without his trademark beard and floppy hair!
Kelly Groucutt shaved his trademark beard for his American promotion for his solo album, making him look like a completely different man! Maybe he wanted to try to pass himself an a young fresh upcoming performer and that might have been a wise touch but obviously did him no services, as the album unfortunately sank like a stone. I love ELO and Kelly Groucutt and I like his solo album and Am I A Dreamer is a particular favourite of mine!
How this man managed to get away with appearing as Kelly Groucutt is a mystery! Just kidding. This is indeed Kelly but he sure looks totally different without his big hair and beard!
A poor man's Jeff Lynne in many ELO fans opinion but I kinda like Kelly's solo album. An obvious ELO flavour and some songs would fit perfectly on the Xanadu soundtrack!
I love Kelly dearly (RIP), sweet guy and certainly not given due credit for his vocal ability - I would cite Twilight and Telephone Line in particular as evidence. But my god, he's so out of his depth here, it's painful.
I like Kelly and his music but I think Jeff was losing interest in ELO by the time Kelly left. The band had run its course and he was ready to move on. He even mentions their last album was recorded due to "contractual obligations".
I have to ask in all fairness to both Jeff and Kelly. Did Jeff want to or even have the time to participate? Did Kelly even invite him to participate? The reason for question 1 is because it seemed that, in 1983, Jeff's time was very much divided.
Folks still don't get it..or understand; The decision to stop ELO and terminate relationships was Jeff's and Don Arden's. Kelly was basically told his services were no longer needed when he wanted to write and co writ songs and be involved in the production end. Jeff never would share those aspects with anyone. Jeff is also the one responsible for dismissing the strings portion of the orchestra as well as Lou Clark over time...decided to go for a different sound for ELO
+Richard Lane We already know how horribly Jeff treated the rest of the band. the band broke up because of Jeff and his stingy, hateful ways. WE already know the stuff you posted. He let the band go after he got what he wanted out of them. He treated them all like ****.
And that is why Richard Tandy still works for him??? Bev got ELO Part 2 together cos he felt they could continue without Jeff Lynne. Live, certainly. But albums of new material and calling it ELO. I've tried to like their stuff and it's ok....but it sounds like a band trying to write songs like Jeff did in their most successful period of the band. And it sounds more like Air Supply than ELO. Call it what you want, Jeff is beyond genius and Richard Tandy knows this. Artists are a pain in the ass but they have a gift. If Bev had that gift, he wouldn't need to revive old bands and instead start afresh. He wasn't exactly digging the back of the sofa for the rent was he?
@@579tweetybird Based on what you've read? Based on how you were there? Based on what information and from what sources do you make these claims about Jeff Lynne having stingy and hateful ways? Do you KNOW him? Did you know him then? If you didn't, you have no basis for making these claims.
vee kay correct, nothing is cited by anyone on how anyone was treated. The person you’re talking down to didn’t cite anything credible and yet, neither did you. It’s all just opinion based discussions and that’s all. Not sure why you care to debate what you don’t know about either...
I love elo and Jeff Lynne will always be god to me but he treated Kelly really badly in getting rid of him by saying he was just a session singer and not actually a band member: I have seen e l o part 2 and later the orchestra because mr Lynn wanted the Elo name back. Kelly would always be at the back door after the concerts and took time to meet and chat with the fans ., got his autograph and had my picture taken with him many times.,r I p to a great guy
To establish myself as a solo artist must get as far away from the ELO sound as possible and avoid using phrases like "out of the blue" and "all over the world"
+BombShelterChoir I agree with most of what you say. The backing sounded so much like ELO that I thought Jeff Lynne had produced it. But Louis Clark. That explains it. As you say, Jeff could sing a song and write a song, and produce a song. I know it's sad about the death and that, but I think this video shows that Kelly had ideas above his station. Neither of the songs are good enough to be hits. And, sorry, his voice isn't good enough. It becomes clear that his voice was adequate for his role in ELO. When you compare him to his predecessor, Michael de Albuquerque, it is clear that the same can be said of his bass playing. But, as you say, somewhere along the way, he convinced himself he was a star, when in fact he was just the guy who played bass and sang the backup harmony.
+john bones This is a great song. If ELO had recorded it, it probably would have charted. It's just unfortunate that Kelly wasn't as famous as what he should have been.
Rampage Clover He did better by leaving Jeff and ELO behind. He did better on his own and with ELO Pt. 2 and the Orkestra. Jeff did them all dirty. Glad they got away from him
Jeff Lynne dismissed Kelly during the "Secret Messages" album sessions over a dispute about Kelly's royalties with the band. Kelly sued Jeff and he settled out of court for a reputed £300,000.

I love Kelly dearly (RIP), sweet guy and certainly not given due credit for his vocal ability - I would cite Twilight and Telephone Line in particular as evidence. But my god, he's so out of his depth here, it's painful.
Am I A Dreamer would fit perfectly on The Xanadu soundtrack.
Am I A Dreamer would fit perfectly on ELOs 1980 Xanadu album. Of course, the song was recorded in the summer of 1981 so a little late for that!
I like Kelly and his music but I think Jeff was losing interest in ELO by the time Kelly left. The band had run its course and he was ready to move on. He even mentions their last album was recorded due to "contractual obligations".
Yeah, Jeff at the time called it 'Balance of Payments'.
@@frazzleface753 ...lmao... A rushed & hasty record indeed ! ..just wanted to cut ties i guess .
最高!
Cuando m firmo autografo casi mori rip🌹🌷
I think about Doris when I hear this. . .
He was about 4 years too late for this to have been a #1 hit.
❤
Am I Dreamer would fit well on both the Xanadu soundtrack and the Time album by ELO.
I have to ask in all fairness to both Jeff and Kelly. Did Jeff want to or even have the time to participate? Did Kelly even invite him to participate? The reason for question 1 is because it seemed that, in 1983, Jeff's time was very much divided.
Kelly without long hair, beard and guitar. Very uncommon view.
So? He was the lead. He wanted to make changes. People get "fired" from all kinds of jobs for all kinds of reasons. Musicians are no different.
Je regrette toujours que son unique cd de son album Kelly ne soit pas de meilleure qualité par rapport au vinyle.
Thanks for this. Too much of Jeff;s influence can be heard.
He is doing playback!!!
hilarious. ‘I have material so decided to write it myself’.
Roughly translated as ‘ ill just copy Jeff’.
He did it better than jeff
Looks like Kelly wanted to be Jeff, Leo Sayer or Andy Gibb...he couldn't decide. Should have kept his ELO beard and shaggy hair. He had a great look!!
I love Kelly G, but this was misguided. Leo Sayer had cornered this market by 83!
Nah, it was fucking awesome
too much keyboard synthesizer
+john bones
This is a great song.
If ELO had recorded it, it probably would have charted.
It's just unfortunate that Kelly wasn't as famous as what he should have been.
This is camel balls. You should have stuck with ELO, Kelly, should have stuck with ELO
Rampage Clover He did better by leaving Jeff and ELO behind. He did better on his own and with ELO Pt. 2 and the Orkestra. Jeff did them all dirty. Glad they got away from him
Sorry ma'am, this sounds dire. Kelly tried way too frigging hard. If this was the best he could offer composition wise.
+Diane Stout Oh, you were there? You know what went on?
Good God you're an ignoramous.
I know, this music can't nothing compares with mythic-style of Jeff's E.L.O.
Jeff Lynne dismissed Kelly during the "Secret Messages" album sessions over a dispute about Kelly's royalties with the band. Kelly sued Jeff and he settled out of court for a reputed £300,000.
I think Balance of Power symbolizes the power struggle going on in The Electric Light Orchestra
It wasn't a power struggle. It was Jeff's way or the highway. Friends (or drummers) be damned.
